Brilliant Colors – Introducing CD/LP+MP3 (Slumberland)
A sharp debut album packed with taut guitar buzz and dreamy melodies, neatly expanding on the promise of their in-demand 7” singles. Clocking in at barely 24 minutes, its focus and concision perfectly encapsulate where pop should be in 2009.

Capgun Coup – Maudlin CD (Team Love)
Maudlin is often a satiric commentary on the state of contemporary life, from the futility of sadness, self-pity, and ennui (“Sitting On The Sidewalk,” “Now That I’m Home”) to economic and social inequities (“Got A Lot Of Gull,” “Only The Times Are Changing”) to the anesthetizing effects of technology (“Computer Screens And TVs”).

Cloak/Dagger – Lost Art CD/LP (Jade Tree)
Is it punk? Hardcore? Garage? Play it loud on tracks such as “Deathbed Rebels” that push the punk envelope a bit further with frenzied, circle-pit fodder reminiscent of the Circle Jerks and Big Boys.

Cold Cave – Love Comes Close CD/LP+MP3 (Matador)
Debut full-length from Philly/New York quartet. The warm, rich synth pop sounds are laced with equal measures of romance and nihilism. Somewhere in these realms of negative hiss and out-of-body bliss, there is a peak awaiting all who enter.

CunninLynguists – Strange Journey Volume 2 CD (Traffic)
Features guest appearances from E-40 and Evidence of Dilated Peoples.

Arrington de Dionyso – Malaikat Dan Singa CD (K)
A collection of throbbing, hallucinogenic, trance-inducing trans-utopian cosmic post-punk sounds from Old Time Relijun’s Arrington de Dionyso.

Every Avenue – Picture Perfect CD (Fearless)
Fans of Fall Out Boy and The All-American Rejects listen up.

Faulty DL – Bravery CD/LP (Planet Mu)
Bravery contrasts quite dramatically, working at different tempos, but still impresses with combinations of melodic synths, glitzy garage samples, and complex programmed beats and effects.

Foo Fighters – Greatest Hits CD/CD+DVD/2xLP (RCA)
Best-of collection from Dave Grohl and the Foos including two brand new tracks, “Wheels,” and “Word Forward,” both recorded with producer Butch Vig. Also available as a deluxe edition, which adds a DVD of music and live videos.

Guests include Brother Ali and Del The Funky Homosapien.

Girls In Trouble – Girls In Trouble CD (JDub)
Girls In Trouble is the songwriting debut of multi-instrumentalist Alicia Jo Rabins. She marries her classical training and folk-punk sensitivity to her penchant for Jewish literature, mysticism and history. The result: pop hooks grounded in experimentation, subtle musicianship and a taste for ruminative lyrics.

Guided By Voices – Suitcase 3: Up We Go Now 4xCD (GBV Inc.)
The third installment in the Suitcase series of unreleased Robert Pollard/Guided By Voices tracks excavated from a suitcase of cassettes in his closet. Like the previous two volumes, Suitcase 3 includes 100 songs on four CDs in a box. Disc 4 is an acoustic jam session by Pollard, Tobin Sprout, and Greg Demos in 1994-95 (the period between GBV classics Bee Thousand and Alien Lanes).

A collection of rarities, singles, and B-sides by indefatigable DIY pop musician John Ringhofer, AKA Half-Handed Cloud.

Isaac Hayes – Shaft [Deluxe Edition] CD (Stax)
Digitally remastered deluxe edition featuring a special bonus track.

Curtis Harvey – Box Of Stones CD (Fat Cat)
Box Of Stones certainly pledges allegiance to the acoustic-folk mode and embraces traditional song structures, but stylistic permutations shine throughout: from dark campfire sing-along “Seen,” to bright, Fahey-esque instrumental “Nod,” to the driving carnival blues of album closer “Bad Patch.”

Taylor Hollingsworth – Life With A Slow Ear CD/LP (Team Love)
A beautiful and ragged record that plays like the words on a page of a great Southern novel. Life With A Slow Ear sounds like a dusty desert and the honest and direct lyrics feel like an old pair of leather boots.

Hypocrisy – A Taste Of Extreme Divinity CD (Nuclear Blast)
A much-needed rest and a renewed love for all things death metal give the successor to 2005′s Virus an injection of brutality and strength that show the vigor and melodic power this trio possess. With Immortal’s legendary drummer Horgh the stars have aligned, and Hypocrisy will conquer!

Etienne Jaumet – Night Music CD/LP (Domino)
Etienne Jaumet is one half of the French duo, Zombie Zombie. They make improvisational krautrock/Goblin/John Carpenter-influenced horror soundtrack electronica.

Jookabox – Dead Zone Boys CD/LP (Asthmatic Kitty)
Their third album is a love story meets psychedelic zombie-musical.

The King Khan & BBQ Show – Invisible Girl CD/LP (In The Red)
Invisible Girl marks a return to their trademark doo-wop-laced, anthemic garage rock.

Laarks – An Exaltation Of Laarks CD (Absolutely Kosher)
Laarks’ debut album is a record full of melodic hooks embedded in indie rock mini-epics, with raucous crescendos and climaxes of textures pinned between pauses and composed reflection.

Ryan Leslie – Transition CD/CD+DVD (Casablanca)
Sophomore album a mere eight months after the release of his critically acclaimed debut. Available in two editions: Regular and Deluxe. Deluxe version includes three bonus tracks and a bonus DVD containing the making of the music videos “You’re Not My Girl” and “Nothing,” the “Zodiac” video, and more.

Lymbyc System – Shutter Release CD (Mush)
Magnifying the already giant sounds of Love Your Abuser was not an easy task, but with Jeff Zeigler behind the boards recording the album and John Congleton (Modest Mouse, Explosions In The Sky) shaping the mixes, they’ve managed to do just that. Instrumentation has become broader, arrangements more grandiose, and melodies more focused, resulting in a sublime second album.

Molina & Johnson – Molina & Johnson CD/LP (Secretly Canadian)
In this collaboration between Jason Molina and Will Johnson, each seem to hold the other’s talents to the fire and elevate both performance and creativity. In the friendly sharing of ideas, Molina and Johnson become two poets’ poets in a workshop to craft a singular, searing elegy.

Nile – Those Whom The Gods Detest CD (Nuclear Blast)
New studio album from the extreme metal outfit.

On Fillmore – Extended Vacation CD/LP (Dead Oceans)

Max Richter – Memoryhouse CD (Fat Cat)
Reissue of Richter’s 2002 album. Recorded by Richter with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra and critically lauded on its original release, Memoryhouse is quite deservedly held very dear to the broad-reaching “post-classical” field.

Straight No Chaser – Christmas Cheers CD (Atlantic)
Holiday release from the ten member vocal group. Sticking to the formula that made them both a novelty and a sensation, Christmas Cheers is a collection of both new and classic holiday songs with smooth harmonies and a comedic twist.

Swimmers – People Are Soft CD (Mad Dragon)
The Philadelphia-based act is reminiscent of 60′s British pop, hinting at influences such as the Kinks and the Velvet Underground while drawing comparisons to contemporaries The Arcade Fire, Interpol, Joy Division and The New Pornographers.

Systems Officer – Underslept CD (Temporary Residence)
Complex, thoughtful pop from the solo guise of Armistead Burwell Smith IV, the multi-instrumentalist songwriter and founding member of Pinback and Three Mile Pilot.

Themselves – CrownsDown CD/2xLP (Anticon)
Themselves’ (Doseone and Jel) third album is a careful and vicious exhibition of mastered rap tactics and sampling ethics.
