CDs:
Aa – VoyAager CD (Northern Spy)
“Big A little a” — one of the quintessential house bands of Brooklyn’s mid-aughts loft party/DIY scene — have returned with their first U.S. release since 2007. VoyAager expands dramatically on the band’s primordial polyrhythms and noise palette to embrace lush electronic psychedelia, enveloping vocal textures, and even unexpected, glittering explosions of pop melodicism. Vinyl version due February 11.
Above & Beyond – Acoustic CD (Ultra)
New live release from the pioneering EDM trio. In 2013 the group performed some of their best-loved songs acoustically with a 12-piece band across three sold out shows at London’s legendary Porchester Hall.
Actress – Ghettoville CD/3xLP+MP3 (Werkdiscs/Ninja Tune)
The fourth album from techno artist Darren Cunningham – otherwise known as Actress – draws its inspiration from society’s outcasts, and adds soulful samples to a mass of different musical genres.
Arild Andersen/Paolo Vinaccia/Tommy Smith – Mira CD (ECM)
In Oslo’s Rainbow, bassist Andersen, tenorist Tommy Smith, and drummer Paolo Vinaccia re-channeled their creative energies into a program of soulful ballads and mid-tempo free-floating sound explorations. The pairing of Anderson’s muscular bass and Smith’s vaulting tenor is exceptionally compelling (as the recent Celebration album also confirmed). Most of the tunes on Mira are from Arild’s pen, though his cohorts also contribute material, and there is an unexpected interpretation of Burt Bacharach’s “Alfie,” beautifully played by Tommy Smith here.
The Autumn Defense – Fifth CD/2xLP+CD+MP3 (Yep Roc)
Everyone has a different way to relax after a hard day of work, and for Pat Sansone and John Stirratt, the best way to clear their heads after playing to thousands of people for weeks on end was to find time to craft Fifth, the latest immaculately rendered pop opus from their long-running duo The Autumn Defense. Confident grooves underlie the duo’s masses of harmonies and carefully layered guitar chimes for what the pair considers one of their most varied efforts to date.
Algebra Blessett – Recovery CD (E1)
Born Algebra Felicia Blessett and hailing from the R&B hotbed of Atlanta, Algebra has already earned a reputation as one of her hometown’s most exciting new talents. Having already won widespread acclaim with her solo debut Purpose, and for her work as collaborator with the likes of Monica, Bilal, India.Arie, Esperanza Spalding and Anthony David, Algebra offers a fresh, expansive creative vision on Recovery, on which she worked with three of today’s hottest urban producers: Bryan-Michael Cox, Kwamé Holland and Shannon Sanders.
Bohren & Der Club Of Gore – Piano Nights CD (Ipecac)
All new material from the German collective, spanning the styles of their entire spastic catalog.
Laura Cantrell – No Way There From Here CD (Thrift Shop)
Vintage-style country music, straight from New York City. “Cantrell and co-producer Mark Nevers provide everything a fan of the countrypolitan songbook could desire: weeping-willow guitar lines and witty rejoinders from fiddle or banjo, delicate harmonies, the soft affect of a brush on a cymbal,” writes NPR’s Ann Powers.
David Crosby – Croz CD (Blue Castle)
Croz is David Crosby’s first studio album in over 20 years, a collection of 11 new tracks from one of America’s most notable singer/songwriters. The album features guest appearances from Wynton Marsalis, Mark Knopfler, Leland Sklar and Steve Tavaglione. Vinyl version due February 11.
D/A/D – The Construct CD/Cassette (Hausu)
Equipped with a guitar, synth, and a wide palette of ‘80s-derived tunes, D/A/D crafts cinematic compositions fit for a cruise down neon-streaked city streets, or a journey to the outer ring of a distant galaxy. 10 new compositions drift from Italo-disco, boogie funk, slow-burning balladry, and cosmic drift.
Morgan Delt – Morgan Delt CD/LP+MP3 (Trouble In Mind)
Morgan cites influences from Curt Boettcher to West Coast Pop Art Experimental Band and rounds it out with golden age Sunset Strip heavies like The Byrds and Love. It’s all in there; obsessively studied, mastered and then mutated. The drums pound hard and heavy, while the backups “la-la-la” all over your noggin like a Frankenstein version of The Flaming Lips and Thee Oh Sees. Each track worms its way into your brain and takes hold.
The Districts – The Districts CD/LP (Fat Possum)
New EP from the hotly-tipped Pennsylvania indie quartet who have drawn comparisons to My Morning Jacket, The Pixies, Ryan Adams, Cold War Kids and Spoon.
Drowners – Drowners CD/LP (Frenchkiss)
New York’s signature up-all-night energy courses through Drowners, but there’s a sweet melancholy to the album as well. In his down time, frontman Matthew Hitt began writing songs that reflected this renewed interest in angular, compressed rock & roll.
Dum Dum Girls – Too True CD/LP+MP3 (Sub Pop)
Too True is Dum Dum Girl’s best attempt at joining the rock & roll ranks by chasing pop into the dark, and is influenced by the great punk poets and an unhealthy obsession with the Surrealists’ manifesto of desire.
Sky Ferreira – Night Time, My Time CD+CDEP/2xLP (Capitol)
Long awaited debut studio album by the hyped singer/songwriter/model/actress. Drawing inspiration mainly from ’80s pop and ’90s grunge, Night Time, My Time distances itself from the “relaxed” and “developed” sound found on her pop-oriented EPs. (CD version is expanded with the bonus EP Ghost).
Gangstagrass – Broken Hearts & Stolen Money CD (Rench Audio)
An infectious album of authentic bluegrass and hip-hop.
Gaslight Anthem – B-Sides CD (Side One Dummy)
11 rare tracks recorded between 2008-2011, including acoustic versions of some of their own hits, and covers of The Rolling Stones, Fake Problems and Lightning Dust.
Gem Club – In Roses CD/LP+MP3 (Hardly Art)
In Roses ventures beyond the bedroom, reshaping Gem Club’s sound in fresh and unimagined ways. More expansive and more majestic than their past releases, yet retains a delicate intimacy.
Guardian Alien – Spiritual Emergency CD/LP+MP3 (Thrill Jockey)
Guardian Alien, led by the unparalleled drumming of Greg Fox, is an integral part of a new wave of New York avant-garde musicians. Taking inspiration from those that came before, such as Milford Graves (with whom Fox has studied), and the great minimalist composer Rhys Chatham, Guardian Alien rejects previously established forms while selectively contorting elements of many into a wholly unique and personal new order. Striking a unique balance between sounds produced acoustically and electronically, its latest work, Spiritual Emergency, shows the group harnessing instability and cosmic fluctuations, pushing its sound in multiple directions simultaneously to create a pivotal moment in the post-modern New York underground.
Habibi – Habibi CD/LP+MP3 (Burger)
Debut album of girl group rock & roll jams out of New York.
Holy Wave – Relax CD/LP (Reverberation Appreciation Society)
Relax sees Holy Wave expanding both their sound and their membership, recording for the first time as a five-piece. The band continues to carefully combine fluid forms of scared surf sounds, droning riffs and groups vocals that haunt and harmonize in equal measure.
Hospitality – Trouble CD/LP+MP3 (Merge)
“On its self-titled debut, the charming Brooklyn pop-rock band Hospitality burst out of the gate like a batch of 4.0 GPA indie-rock students, not unlike their forerunning New York City bros in Vampire Weekend. With songs that crushed out on coworkers and wrapped heartache in cheap dresses, frontwoman Amber Papini managed a balancing act of post-collegiate insouciance and soul, channeling The Velvet Undergound’s prettier moments with knowing, Belle & Sebastian-style naiveté. More than one observer described Hospitality by invoking a cardigan. By comparison, the band’s second album is more of a leather jacket.” – NPR
I Break Horses – Chiaroscuro CD/LP (Bella Union)
Chiaroscuro is the second album from the Swedish shoegaze duo, and is the follow-up to their much acclaimed 2011 debut Hearts. ”My only aim when starting to write this album was to ignore any possible second album expectations.” explains Maria Linden. “I let myself write both the happiest songs but also the saddest, and then I put them together.”
Jóhann Jóhannsson – McCanick [Original Motion Picture Soundtrack] CD/LP (Milan)
Directed by Josh C. Waller, McCanick tells the story of a narcotics detective on the hunt for a seemingly harmless young criminal who knows a truth about the cop’s past. Acclaimed Icelandic composer Jóhann Jóhannsson (Prisoners) produced the beautiful, elegant and haunting score to this thriller/drama. In the categories of Max Richter, Clint Mansell, Dustin O’Halloran, Cliff Martinez, he belongs to this generation of composers who combines classical orchestration with electronic music.
Eleni Karaindrou – Medea CD (ECM)
Greek composer Eleni Karaindrous collaborations with stage director Antonis Antypas have generated some of her most powerful music. Medea, like the earlier Trojan Women, comes out of this association. Created to accompany performances at the Ancient Theatre of Epidaurus, the music vibrates with emotional intensity. Karaindrou gives her themes to a small ensemble, its sound-colors creating an ambiance both archaic and contemporary, as textures of santouri, ney, lyra and clarinets are combined and contrasted.
Angelique Kidjo – Eve CD (Savoy)
The Beninese born, Grammy Award winning singer/songwriter builds on her ever-evolving legacy with a 13-track, three-interlude set of melodically rich, rhythmically powerful expressions of female empowerment. These songs become all the more intimate and emotionally urgent with Kidjo’s dynamic collaborations with traditional women’s choirs from Kenya and various cities and villages in Benin.
Lambchop – Nixon [2000] 2xCD/LP+MP3 (Merge)
This double-CD reissue of Lambchop’s 2000 album includes five remastered bonus tracks, and is also available for the first time (in the U.S.) on vinyl. HQ-180gm.
The Lawrence Arms – Metropole CD/LP+CD (Epitaph)
The Chicago punk trio returns with its first album in eight years. “None of the rust shows,” writes The A.V. Club’s Marah Eakin, “with band members Brendan Kelly, Neil Hennessey, and Chris McCaughan ripping through tracks like ‘Seventeener (17th and 37th)’ with typical aplomb.”
Lockbox – Prince Soul Grenade CD/Cassette (Hausu Mountain)
Bump this in your ghetto blaster and dive into this pop producer’s hyper-kinetic mind. Liquefying common tropes of pop, hip-hop, and techno into high-fructose breakbeat confections, cramming the jams with effects manipulation and electronic noise as mind-warping as an avant-garde basement freak-out.
Eleni Mandell – Let’s Fly A Kite CD/LP (Yep Roc)
Featuring 12 new songs, Let’s Fly A Kite was recorded at Goldtop Studios in London and produced by Neil Brockbank, who also produces for Eleni’s fellow label mate, Nick Lowe, and Robert Trehern, who plays in Nick’s band. Eleni has created an impressive body of work over the past decade and has received praise from the likes of Rolling Stone, American Songwriter and the Los Angeles Times.
Iain Matthews – The Art Of Obscurity CD (Omnivore)
While probably best remembered in the U.S. for his 1978 smash “Shake It,” Iain Matthews has been a worldwide music icon for over 45 years. Whether as a founding member of Fairport Convention, Matthews Southern Comfort, Plainsong or as a solo artist, Matthews has taken listeners on a journey with each recording.
The New Mendicants – Into The Lime CD (Ashmont)
Debut full-length album from the indie supergroup consisting of Joe Pernice (Pernice Brothers), Norman Blake (Teenage Fanclub) and Mike Belisky (The Sadies).
New War – New War CD/LP+MP3 (ATP)
This Australian band’s songs are immediate, charged and memorable. ”Delphian,” ”consuming” and ”compelling” are just a few of the adjectives used to describe their widescreen sound. The band rewards close attention with a primal but sophisticated pulse and a wide acidic eye cast into the depths of this and the last century. Available on CD and HQ-180gm red vinyl with download code.
The Nox Boys – Nox Boys CD/LP (Get Hip)
Self-titled debut from Pittsburgh’s preeminent teenage garage-punk band. 11 tracks of hard-edged, in-your-face angst-filled rock & roll from the heart of the Steel City.
Of Mice And Men – Restoring Force CD/LP+CD (Rise)
The Southern California rockers solidify their place on the heavy-music scene with their third album. “Of Mice & Men are certainly not the first band to take their metal-leaning sound and add a hearty dose of alternative flair to the mix, but what sets Restoring Force apart is the consistent, quality sound that results from this sonic concoction,” writes James Shotwell in his review for Under The Gun.
Tara Jane O’Neil – Where Shine New Lights CD/LP (Kranky)
TJO has always been a shapeshifter. In her tireless search for a music that mirrors and reflects her alchemical, deeply syncretic approach to sound, color, language, surface and texture, she has found herself in a somewhat singular category. Using some very basic recording equipment and her vivid musical imagination, she has achieved a rare essentialism wherein all unnecessary elements have been stripped away leaving only the most indispensable sounds.
The Pack A.D. – Do Not Engage CD/LP (Nettwerk)
Do Not Engage reunites The Pack A.D. with Detroit producer Jim Diamond (White Stripes, Electric Six, The Mooney Suzuki, Dirtbombs), a friend-turned-collaborator who insisted upon working behind the boards for Unpersons, a record that would go on to earn the band its first Juno Award nomination in 2013 for Breakthrough Group Of The Year and has proven himself something of an ideal ghost third member by coaxing Black and Miller to their finest work yet.
Peggy Sue – Choir Of Echoes CD/2xLP+CD+MP3 (Yep Roc)
“When their debut album Fossils And Other Phantoms arrived in 2010, it was somewhat lost in the aftermath of the success of nu-folk behemoths Mumford And Sons – a band that Peggy Sue have previously toured with. Yet to draw comparisons between the two acts would be plain wrong, something hammered home by the subtle nuances of the beautifully melancholic Esme, which opens the record properly with its perfectly pitched harmonies.” – Musicomh.com
Periphery – Clear CD (Sumerian)
New experimental album from Maryland-based progressive tech-metallers.
Pontiak – Innocence CD/LP+MP3 (Thrill Jockey)
When Pontiak began to compose the songs that became Innocence, instead of employing their well-worn method of carving out melodic passages from the squall of feedback and fuzz, the Carney brothers’ songs frequently began the process with a trio of vocals, often eschewing instruments altogether as they wrote. Nowhere is this more apparent than the melancholic ballads of “Wildfires” and “Darkness Is Coming.” On high energy, hook laden tracks such as “Lack Lustre Rush,” “Surrounded By Diamonds,” and “Ghosts,” the distortion and the searing yet elegant guitar lines hang on the brother’s vocal melodies.
Primal Fear – Delivering The Black CD/CD+DVD (Frontiers)
Classic and ultra-fresh Primal Fear riff-rockers like the title track, the album opener “King For A Day” or the groove monsters “Alive And On Fire” and “Road To Asylum” hit the bulls-eye just like the untamed speed killer “Rebel Fraction.” The outstanding ballad “Born With A Broken Heart’”shows a new side of Primal Fear with an acoustic guitar vibe and the addition of Liv Kristine (Leaves’ Eyes) on backing vocals. Available in Regular and Deluxe editions. Deluxe includes two extra bonus tracks and DVD with three music videos.
Quilt – Held In Splendor CD/LP+MP3 (Mexican Summer)
On their second album, Held In Splendor, Boston’s Quilt marry classic ‘60s San Francisco (Moby Grape) with the ‘60s UK folk rock scene (Fairport Convention). It is an audacious pop-rock record with cascading harmonies and billowing textures, punchy rhythms and snarled guitars, wonderful depth and resplendent peaks.
Amy Ray – Goodnight Tender CD/LP (Daemon Records)
Amy Ray’s progression as a singer/songwriter has taken her up and down all of the switchback trails of the South, from the dive bars of Saturday night to church on Sunday morning, with some coffeehouses and arenas along the way. Goodnight Tender, her first country album, integrates all of these influences in fresh, surprising ways and testifies to her range and virtuosity as an artist who is always game to follow a thread of melody into new and rugged territory.
Red Dragon Cartel – Red Dragon Cartel CD (Frontiers)
Red Dragon Cartel features stellar guest appearances from legendary vocalist Robin Zander of Cheap Trick, original Iron Maiden vocalist Paul Di’Anno, former Pantera and Down bassist Rex Brown, Slash’s Conspirator’s Todd Kearns and Brent Fitz, Scott Reeder of Kyuss and The Obsessed and vocalist Maria Brink from In This Moment and Five Finger Death Punch’s Jeremy Spencer.
Ring Of Fire – Battle Of Leningrad CD (Frontiers)
Ring Of Fire’s story begins in the year 2000. Having completed a successful mini-tour with Yngwie Malmsteen in late 1999 on the heels of the Alchemy album, vocalist Mark Boals set about creating his second solo album, a collection of songs very neo-classical in their nature. When deciding on a line-up for the album, Tony MacAlpine came highly recommended and Tony in turn recommended Virgil Donati (Planet X) on drums. The impressive line-up was rounded out by classically trained Artension keyboardist Vitalij Kuprij, with Boals and MacAlpine splitting bass duties.
Irmin Schmidt – Villa Wunderbar 2xCD (Mute)

Silent Temple – Ruins CDEP (Echo Bridge)
Silent Temple is a prog rock band from Iowa.
Sleepy Sun – Maui Tears CD (Dine Alone)
In the sounds of Maui Tears, you hear echoes of nights shared with fellows and allies like Arctic Monkeys and Black Angels — a band growing self-assured as studio presence — the elasticity and tensions of a creative brotherhood. And like every Sleepy Sun record, it deftly walks the borders and boundaries between hooky power pop classicism and hazy, primer-grey Camaro rock all colored by a lurking sense of fog, unease, and mystery at the corners.
Helen Sung – Anthem For A New Day CD (Concord Jazz)
Anthem For A New Day is a 10-song set that positions her at the forefront of a talented and diverse sextet, with guest appearances by violinist Regina Carter and clarinetist Paquito D Rivera.

Available in Regular and Deluxe editions. Deluxe adds a bonus eight track covers CD as well as a DVD containing a documentary.
Doug Tuttle – Doug Tuttle CD/LP+MP3 (Trouble In Mind)
Solo release from the former guitarist for New Hampshire psych outfit MMOSS. As one of the principal songwriters in MMOSS, Tuttle was integral in honing that band’s signature sound of West Coast bummer harmonies wrapped taut around a sinewy and dreamy collision of hazy psychedelia and motorik Krautrock. Here, Tuttle deftly forges a sound that all his, weaving nebulous jams into masterfully crafted pop gems.
Uncle Tupelo – No Depression [Legacy Edition] 2xCD (Sony/Legacy)

Boy & Bear – Harlequin Dream LP (Nettwerk)
Released last year on CD – now available on vinyl. The lead single, “Southern Sun,” has a powerful urgency, not unlike the best of Bruce Springsteen or Fleetwood Mac, while a sprinkling of strings and brass played by living, breathing humans, not machines brings life and color to such standouts as “Back Down The Black,” “Old Town Blues” and “Stranger.” There’s even a swinging sax solo on title track “Harlequin Dream,” a first for the band.
Burnt Skull – Sewer Breath LP (12XU)
10 tracks of ferocious un-tuned obliteration.
The Colourist – Lido LP (Republic)
Released last year on CD – now available on vinyl. All of the tracks on Lido glisten with unshakable harmonies from co-vocalists Adam Castilla and Maya Tuttle as it builds into alternative pop bliss.
Thelonious Monk – Solo Monk [Reissue/1946] LP (Original Recordings)
Thelonious Monk’s 1946 solo affair ranks among the pioneering pianist’s most introspective, cerebral, and emotional outings. His trademark angularity informs a majority of the pieces, yet so does grand classicism and melodic rapture. Monk’s readings of the originals and standards practically stand the tunes on their collective ears. Solo Monk is simply amazing. And now, mastered from the original master tapes, this HQ-180gm reissue brings all the music closer, and into more transparent form, than ever before.
Morrissey – Satellite Of Love 12” (Rhino/Parlophone)
This 12” includes “You’re Gonna Need Someone On Your Side,” the opening track from Morrissey’s seminal 1992 album Your Arsenal, which was produced by the legendary and hugely influential Spiders From Mars guitarist and arranger Mick Ronson (whom also co-produced Lou Reed’s original “Satellite Of Love” and its parent album, Transformer). Also featuring “Satellite of Love (Live).” In addition there are two previously unreleased tracks, “Vicar In A Tutu (Live)” and “All You Need Is Me (Live)” recorded live in Hyde Park on July 4, 2008.
