The Allman Brothers Band’s cornerstone LP, At Fillmore East, compiled from the four sets recorded on the weekend of March 12-13, 1971, has been expanded, stretching over six CDs with fifteen unreleased tracks. Also available on Blu-ray audio (5.1 surround sound) and HQ-200gm vinyl.
The Brothers – Don’t Stop Now [Reissue/1976] CD (Funky Town Grooves)
The “Brothers” appeared to be little more than a New York set of studio players, led by Bhen Lanzaroni but they did an amazing job of replicating a Philly instrumental sound, with plenty of heavy bass at the bottom of the arrangements, and jazzy riffing on wah wah guitar, flute and keyboards over the top. This reissue of their 1976 album is expanded with six bonus tracks.
James Brown – Get On Up: The James Brown Story OST CD (UMe)
Features studio and standout live versions of many of Brown’s top soul/funk hits – from his first, 1956’s “Please Please Please” to “Out Of Sight,” “I Got You (I Feel Good),” “Try Me,” “Papa’s Got A Brand New Bag,” “It’s A Man’s Man’s Man’s World,” and “Get Up (I Feel Like Being A) Sex Machine.” Also included are two previously unreleased concert recordings heard in the new film.
Marc Broussard – Life Worth Living CD/LP (Vanguard)
Louisiana’s favorite son returns with a set that’s part laid back soul, part blistering R&B, and all Marc Broussard, as they say down in Carencro.
Eric Clapton & Friends – The Breeze: An Appreciation Of JJ Cale CD (Bushbranch)
Eric Clapton has often stated that JJ Cale is one of the single most important figures in rock history, a sentiment echoed by many of his fellow musicians. Cale’s influence on Clapton and many of today s artists cannot be understated. To honor JJ’s legacy, a year after his passing, Clapton gathered a group of like-minded friends and musicians for The Breeze (An Appreciation of JJ Cale). With performances by Clapton, Mark Knopfler, John Mayer, Willie Nelson, Tom Petty, Derek Trucks and Don White, the album features 16 beloved JJ Cale songs. Vinyl version due August 5.
L.C. Cooke – The Complete SAR Records Recordings CD (Abkco)
L.C. Cooke recorded what was to be his debut album (tracks 1-10 on this collection) during the first half of the 1960s for his older brother Sam’s SAR Records, notable for being one of the first artist-owned labels and having a roster that included Billy Preston, the latter-day Soul Stirrers (featuring Johnnie Taylor), and The Valentinos, the secular iteration of gospel’s Womack Brothers. Shortly after Sam Cooke s death in December of 1964, L.C.’s album was shelved. SAR did manage to release the bulk of these recordings on a series of singles between 1960 and 1964, which are all included here.
Cosines – Oscillations CD/LP (Fika Recordings)
Debut album from the London-based indie band, recorded using a variety of instruments and electronic trickery including marimba, autoharp, theremin and cranky old Moog and Roland synths.
Dark Lotus – Mud Water Air & Blood CD (Psychopathic)
Fourth album from the rap supergroup comprised of members of ICP and Twiztid.
The Dream Academy – The Morning Lasted All Day… 2xCD (Real Gone Music)
With their varied instrumentation, intimate song stylings, and poetic, allusive lyrics, the Dream Academy always stood apart from their 80s British rock brethren; that they dedicated their hit song, “Life In A Northern Town,” to Nick Drake and minimalist composer Steve Reich spoke volumes as to the reach of their intellectual and artistic ambition. This 24-track set is chock-full of rarities and includes the new track “Sunrising” recorded specifically for this release.
Cass Elliot – Don’t Call Me Mama Anymore Plus Rarities – Her Final Recordings CD (Real Gone Music)
As the title indicates, 1973’s Don’t Call Me Anymore marked a real break with Elliot’s previous incarnation as Mama Cass of The Mamas And The Papas; at RCA Records, Cass was able to take control of her recording career, choosing songs that she wanted to sing. This digitally reamastered reissue is expanded with six unreleased album outtakes, which constitute her final recordings.
Djivan Gasparyan – I Will Not Be Sad In The World / The Moon Shines At Night [Reissue/1983/1992] 2xCD (All Saints)
Armenia’s greatest living musician and the acknowledged master of the duduk, Djivan Gasparyan has toured throughout Europe, Asia, the Middle East and the United States for over fifty years. His work can be heard on numerous film soundtracks, including The Crow, Russia House and Gladiator. The duduk is a traditional woodwind instrument from the greater Armenia region. A double-reed instrument of ancient origin and noted for its unique, mournful sound. This is a combined reissue of Djivan’s debut solo album I Will Not Be Sad In This World (originally released in the Soviet Union in 1983) and Moon Shines At Night from 1993, recorded with infinite guitarist Michael Brook.
Michael Giacchino – Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (Score/OST)
The original score to this summer’s blockbuster.
Hooray For Earth – Racy CD/LP (Dovecote)
True Loves won Hooray For Earth a well-deserved round of huzzahs from all of the key tastemakers. Following up a critically acclaimed debut album, Noel Heroux plotted the band’s sophomore album Racy by ignoring expectations and stripping away baggage, musical and otherwise. Heroux says, “I wanted everything loud and direct so you don’t have to guess at what you’re getting into.” “[Hooray For Earth] display a precocious knack for massive, major-key hooks that are ‘indie-rock’ in name only” – Pitchfork
I, Omega – Transients CD (Bullet Tooth)
I, Omega is a progressive metal quintet from the Los Angeles area, dead set on creating a sound that is bold and unique, as well as easily digestible. Shredding guitars with fast, upbeat drumming, beefy bass lines, and vocals ranging from angelic to devilish, all with a punk rock attitude.
Jefferson Airplane – Live At The Fillmore Auditorium 10/15/66: Signe’s Farewell CD (Relayer Friday Records)
Bootlegged for decades, Relayer Friday presents another installment in their Jefferson Airplane Original Masters Series. CD version due July 29.
Kahoots – Take To The Fields CD/LP (Telegraph Harp)
Kahoots write brilliant, catchy pop songs with thoughtful lyrics, more hooks than a pirate ship, and all the trappings of a good old-fashioned indie rock band.
Fela Kuti – Finding Fela OST (Knitting Factory Works)
The soundtrack to the film Finding Fela which tells the story of Fela Kuti’s life, his music, and his social and political importance. Land Observations – The Grand Tour CD/LP (Mute)
“Land Observations recorded The Grand Tour with nothing but his electric guitar whilst sitting on the edge of the Bavarian Alps (sweet tax write-off) and will probably stretch the John Fahey/Takoma-style guitar explorations further into the motorik-kraut direction that his debut record did, thus becoming its own Grand Tour by expanding the mind through the exploration of the treasures of layering rhythm, timbre, and melody, inspired by key sites throughout Europe.” – Tiny Mixtapes
Jenny Lewis – The Voyager CD/LP (WB)
This is the former Rilo Kiley frontwoman’s third solo album and first in six years, following 2006’s Rabbit Fur Coat (with The Watson Twins) and 2008’s Acid Tongue. The Voyager‘s rootsy, golden glow comes courtesy of Lewis and the artists she chose to produce various tracks, including Ryan Adams (who, alongside Mike Viola, produced all but three of the tracks), Beck, and Lewis’ longtime collaborator Johnathan Rice.
The Limiñanas – The Limiñanas CD/LP+MP3 (Trouble In Mind)
Getting their start in October of 2009, The Limiñanas are the brainchild of Lio and Marie Limiñana. Beginning as a home studio project the duo spent much time flipping through John Barry and Ennio Morricone LP’s and books on Victorian-era architecture, watching ‘60s noir films, and basking in the sun of southern France seeking inspiration. There are traces of Serge Gainsbourg, Stereolab, Yeh-Yeh, and Nuggets-style, fuzz-driven freak-outs.
Karen Mantler – Business Is Bad CD (ECM)
Snowstorms, volcanoes, lawyers and bill-collectors do their damnedest to dampen Mantlers moods in these songs of woe, but her vocal delivery remains stoical and nonchalant. Doug Wieselman (of Antony And The Johnsons, Lounge Lizards, and Kamikaze Ground Crew fame) and Kato Hideki (whose many credits include the Death Ambient trio and projects with John Zorn) lend subtle and supple support throughout.
The Muffs – Whoop Dee Doo CD (Burger)
Whoop Dee Doo is the pop/punk band’s first full-length of new material in a decade. Vinyl version due August 12.
Non Phixion – The Future Is Now [Reissue/2002] 2xCD+3×7”+Cassette (Get On Down)
Get On Down presents the 360-degree story of Non Phixion’s 2002 debut The Future Is Now. This expanded reissue includes a double-CD containing the original vocal and instrumental versions of the album; three 7” singles: “Black Helicopters,” “Drug Music,” and “Rock Stars” all in full color jackets that are reproductions of the original 12” artwork; a full reproduction of the group’s press-only sampler cassette from 2000 The Past, The Present And The Future Is Now which includes early singles, demos, freestyles and promos; and an 80-page, hard-cover liner notes book, with dozens of photos and images.
Van Dyke Parks – Super Chief CD (Yep Roc)
From VDP: “I’ve made an orchestral fantasy illustrating my first trip across the USA by rail, in 1955. This suite is drawn from over a score of years, and as many films, now re-recorded from my archives as a film-music composer. Most of this music has been faintly presented, under the din of horse hooves, gunplay, and voice-over. Much of it has never been heard at all, having ended up on editing room floors from entirely re-cut films, or movies that never made it past a box office. I felt it was high time to give it a proper listen.”
Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers – Hypnotic Eye CD/LP (Reprise)
Hypnotic Eye is the 13th studio album from Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers, and the first album from the band in four years. “I knew I wanted to do a rock & roll record,” Petty told Rolling Stone in April. “We hadn’t made a straight hard-rockin’ record, from beginning to end, in a long time.”
Gene Rains – Far Away Lands: The Exotic Music Of Gene Rains CD (Real Gone Music)
Among devotees of exotica music and tiki culture, vibraphonist Gene Rains is one of the Big Three of exotica Martin Denny and Arthur Lyman being the other two. Yet, while Denny and Lyman have seen their entire album catalogs come out on CD, and many collections compiled of their work, to date Gene Rains has remained a true cult figure, with none of his albums released on compact disc.
Brian Reitzell – Auto Music CD/LP+CD (Smalltown Supersound)
You might not immediately recognize his name, but you’ll certainly have stumbled across at least one corner of his massive portfolio, whether as the drummer in Redd Kross and with French electronica artists Air, or as one of Hollywood’s most sought-after music supervisors and composers.
Neil Sedaka – In The Studio Volume 2 1958-1962 CD (Rare Rockin’ Records)
New compilation of tracks from Brill Building songwriter Neil Sedaka’s RCA Sessions from 1958-1962. All tracks are in stereo. An amazing insight “in the studio” with Neil Sedaka and how these great recordings were made. This CD is over 70 minutes full of studio sessions, false starts, rehearsals and studio talk.
Shabazz Palaces – Lese Majesty CD/2xLP+MP3 (Sub Pop)
Lese Majesty is the second album the Seattle-based experimental hip-hop group featuring Palaceer Lazaro (aka Ishmael Butler, formerly of Digable Planets) and Fly Guy ‘Dai (aka Tendai Maraire). The album is not a launching pad for the group’s fan base increasing propaganda. It is a series of astral suites, recorded happenings, shared.
Shaolin Afronauts – Follow The Path CD/LP (Freestyle)
Follow The Path is a 21-track, double album that expands upon and delves further into the musical genres that inspire and influence the group: rhythmic and pulsating Afrobeat,
and the avant-garde/spiritual jazz inspired by artists such as Sun Ra and Mulatu Astatke.
Naomi Shelton And The Gospel Queens – Cold World CD/LP+MP3 (Daptone)
With Gabriel (Bosco Mann) Roth at the helm, Naomi and company went into the studio summer 2013, and cut onto tape what can only be described as bonafide soul excitement of the highest order. At the heart of it, Cold World is a soul record but the cross section of sub-genres the album weaves through makes it difficult to label it plainly as such.
The Shirelles – Happy And In Love / Shirelles [Reissue/1971/1972] CD (Real Gone Music)
One of the pioneering girl groups of the ‘60s, The Shirelles (originally Shirley Alston nee Owens, Doris Coley, Micki Harris and Beverly Lee) were the mainstay act at New York-based Scepter Records for a number of years. This reissue of their two first albums for RCA is expanded with three non-album tracks.
John Smith – Great Lakes Deluxe CD (Liaison Music)
John plays the steel-string acoustic guitar. Sometimes with a slide, sometimes on his lap, sometimes de-tuning the thing mid-song. He was named Young Acoustic Guitarist Of The Year in 2003 and hasn’t stopped to look back, unless it’s to pick up a banjo. His playing combined with his honey-on-gravel vocals have brought crowds to pin-drop silence and rapturous applause.
Soft Walls – No Time CD/LP+MP3 (Trouble In Mind)
These 10 songs are meditations on the passing of time itself and the pre-conceived notions (both external and internal) of what you can and should be doing with it. Filled with avant-leaning psych drones, dreamy guitar ragas, motorik head-boppers, and pop tunes that shimmer enticingly, these are songs to get lost in; to discover and rediscover. (Limited copies pressed on mixed color vinyl.)
Soundtrack – How To Stuff A Wild Bikini [Reissue/1965] CD (Real Gone Music)
How To Stuff A Wild Bikini marked the end of an era. It was the last (and wackiest) Beach Party
movie and last on-screen pairing of Annette Funicello and Frankie Avalon ’til ’87. The only true original soundtrack of the Beach Party flicks features Annette’s “The Perfect Boy,” performances from the cast and a couple rockin’ garage tunes by the Kingsmen, and more.
Stardeath And White Dwarfs – Wastoid CD/LP (Federal Prism)
“Stardeath & White Dwarfs’ heavy, gods-hammering sound owes as much to sludgy prog-rock influences like King Crimson and Pink Floyd as it does to Uncle Wayne’s oeuvre.” — The Guardian
Theory Of A Dead Man – Savages CD/LP (Roadrunner)
Fifth album from the Canadian hard rockers.
Various Artists – Beck Song Reader CD (Capitol)
The now legendary Beck Song Reader – 20 Beck compositions previously released exclusively as stunningly illustrated sheet music in partnership with McSweeney’s – is now available as a traditional release on CD. The 20-track all-star collection features exclusively recorded versions of Song Reader charts by the likes of Jack White, Jeff Tweedy, David Johansen, Jason Isbell, fun., Eleanor Friedberger, Lord Huron, Norah Jones, Laura Marling, Jarvis Cocker, Sparks, and several more including Beck himself.
Various Artists – Hyperdub 10.2 CD (Hyperdub)
“Hyperdub 10.2 represents the second of four compilations documenting the label’s first decade (but largely displaying its most recent five years). Focusing on the label’s self-professed R&B offerings (the first volume having showcased the label’s club music), 10.2 mixes new offerings from Kode9, Cooly G, and Jessy Lanza with older tracks from Burial, DJ Rashad, and Terror Danjah. A mixed bag, stylistically, 10.2’s tracks are bound by rustling vocals, lights-low tempos, and sultry arrangements.” – Pitchfork

Sharing the same gospel background as her sister and other members of her family (the renowned Drinkard Singers whose line-up included famed aunt, Emily Cissy Houston), Dee Dee’s career in secular music began in 1961 when she and sister Dionne (as part of The Gospelaires, a group they had formed as teenagers) were invited to sing backgrounds for a recording by saxophonist Sam The Man Taylor. Dee Dee became a consistent and well-known New York session singer during the early ‘60s, and could be heard on recordings by Dinah Washington, Aretha Franklin (at Columbia Records at the time), Nina Simone and a bevy of soul stars including Garnet Mimms, Maxine Brown, Chuck Jackson, Esther Phillips, The Drifters, Wilson Pickett, Solomon Burke and her sister s hits for Scepter Records among others.

Wildest Dreams – Wildest Dreams CD/LP (Smalltown Supersound)
“Said to be inspired by the ‘landscape of L.A.,’ Wildest Dreams was reportedly recorded a couple of years ago over the course of a week. The alias is said to indulge the instrument-led side of Harvey’s production style, which is evidenced by its lead track ‘Last Ride, ‘ which features some pretty raucous drums and guitars along with Harvey’s vocals. The album follows on from 2011’s Locussolus, which cut a middle path between electronic and acoustic production.” – Resident Advisor

Recorded in 1955, Afro-Cuban is the jazz trumpeter’s first classic album.
Drugs Dragons – II & I/II LP (Dusty Medical)
The amazing thing about Milwaukee’s Drugs Dragons is how close they come to distilling the essence of rock & roll into a recording. Their second LP ups the hook quotient and adds subtle yet significant touches to their sweat-and-blood soaked rock & roll. Buzzing electronics and field recordings from a Mississippi field at night contribute to a vaguely unsettling feeling that permeates the record.
Harvey Danger – Where Have All The Merrymakers Gone? [1997] LP (No Sleep)
Nearly two decades after its release, Seattle indie rock band Harvey Danger’s cherished debut full-length album, Where Have All The Merrymakers Gone?, is available on vinyl for the first time.
Isaac Hayes – Shaft [Reissue/1971] 2xLP (Fantasy)
Of the many wonderful blaxploitation soundtracks to emerge during the early ’70s, Shaft certainly deserves mention as not only one of the most lasting but also one of the most successful. Isaac Hayes was undoubtedly one of the era’s most accomplished soul artists, and with “Theme From Shaft,” he delivered an anthem just as ambitious and revered as the film itself, a song that has only grown more treasured over the years, after having been an enormously popular hit at the time of its release. Keyboard – Hungry Man LP (Soundway)
Originally recorded for the EMI Nigeria label and produced by legendary producer Odion Iruoje, Keyboard was a one-off studio project formed by Brodricks Majuwa and Isaac Digha from circa 1978. These two session men were often used at the EMI studio and played in multiple recordings that Iruoje produced throughout the era. This extremely scarce and obscure record features amongst others Ignace de Souza of The Black Santiagos from the city of Cotonou, Benin and Jonni Wood from the band SJOB movement. Lilting, laid-back, solid, soul-funk grooves and beautiful horn arrangements with synth effects combine for a unique sound but one that is unmistakably from the sound forge of Odion Iruoje and his two front-line studio engineers Emmanuel Odenusi and Kayode Salami.
Takuya Kuroda – Rising Son 2xLP (Blue Note)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Ascendant trumpeter and composer Takuya Kuroda makes his Blue Note debut with Rising Son, which was produced by José James.
