His recorded career has been very much driven by the standards and, sort of, the classic jazz songbook. You can feel that he’s stretching maybe a little bit to fit into Nels’ world. And Nels is probably moving a little bit toward him. It’s definitely brokering a middle place between where each of them are comfortable. And here they’re playing off each other and going in places I didn’t expect. I like how you really hear the attacks, too. Cloudkicker – Live With Intronaut CD (Century Media)

During an off-date of Cloudkicker’s inaugural tour, in which Intronaut served as his backing band, the skilled musicians headed to Fathom Tree studio in Texas for a live-to-tape recording of their set. Vinyl version due December 16.

Coldplay – Ghost Stories Live 2014 CD+DVD (Atlantic/Parlophone)

Ghost Stories Live 2014 is a new concert film and live album from Coldplay. Filmed by Grammy-nominated director Paul Dugdale, the film documents the band’s unique performance of the Ghost Stories album to a small handful of fans in March 2014, two months prior to the album’s release. Shot in a custom-built amphitheater at Sony Studios, Los Angeles, the advanced production sets the band’s performance against stunning 360-degree and overhead imagery. The package is completed by eight music videos from the Ghost Stories era, including two never-before-seen films for B-sides “All Your Friends” and “Ghost Story” plus the exclusive Extended Director’s Cut of the “Magic” video (with a brand new cameo from Peter Fonda).

Copeland – Ixora CD (Tooth & Nail)

It’s been almost six years since Copeland has released new music. Though each member has been pursuing new ventures, inside and outside of the music industry both collectively as well as individually, Aaron Marsh, Bryan Laurenson, Stephen Laurenson, and Jonathan Bucklew have reunited to record and self-release their fitth full-length album, Ixora. D.O.A. – Positively D.O.A. [33^rd Anniversary Reissue] CD (Sudden Death)

Reissue of this 1981 EP, released to coincide with the 33rd (?) anniversary of its first pressing. Originally released on Alternative Tentacles in time for D.O.A.’s first road trip to the United Kingdom, the five-track Positively D.O.A. was named ”Single of the Week” in the British press in October of that year. With five classic anthems packed into its grooves, the EP helped pave the way for Canada’s legendary punks to shake up the world musically and culturally. This is the first time this early DOA gem has been reissued since 1984. Vinyl version due January 20.

Danny Elfman – So Lo [Reissue/1984] CD (Varese Sarabande)

Digitally remastered and expanded edition of the 1984 solo album from the Oingo Boingo leader (and later film composer). So-Lo was performed by members of Oingo Boingo, but deliberately not released under the Oingo Boingo name in order to circumvent a dispute with the band’s record label. Elfman stated that he used the opportunity to release material that would not be suitable for an actual Oingo Boingo album, moving away from the band’s ska origins and more towards mainstream synthpop.

Brian Eno/Jon Hassell – Fourth World Vol. 1: Possible Musics [Reissue/1980] CD/LP+CD (Glitterbeat)

Fourth World Vol. 1: Possible Musics was not only a defining moment in the development of what Eno coined as “ambient music” but it also facilitated the introduction of Hassell’s “future primitive” trumpet stylings and visionary “Fourth World” musical theories to the broader public.

Espectrostatic – Escape From Witchtropolis CD/LP (Trouble In Mind)

Austin, TX resident Alex Cuervo (Blacktop, Hex Dispensers) turned a few heads last year with his new project Espectrostatic; his synth-based electronic project in favor of spooky electronic pulses and synth drones a la John Carpenter and Tangeringe Dream. Escape From Witchtropolis ups the anté with more sophisticated and subtle arrangements, letting the songs unfold organically, still inferring the presence of a soundtrack to an as-yet-unmade horror flick. j US t—pronounced “Just Us”—is the new album from legendary Hamburg band Faust. Before James Mercer started the Shins, he was in a band called Flake Music. They formed in 1992 and released their only album, When You Land Here, It’s Time to Return, in 1997. Upon the album’s release, Flake Music began touring largely due to support from Modest Mouse, amongst others.

The Flight Of Sleipnir – V CD (Napalm)

Odin’s eight-legged horse slides again by land, water and air of the Nordic underworld. On its back it carries a very precious cargo: the fifth album by the American band Flight Of Sleipnir, shortly and concisely titled V., with its atmospheric mix of stoner rock, doom and folk metal.

Full Of Hell/Merzbow – Full Of Hell/Merzbow 2xCD (Profound Lore)

Double-CD collaboration between one of the most promising grind/hardcore bands around and legendary noise/experimental godfather Masami Akita aka Merzbow. The bonus disc contains exclusive tracks. Maryland/Pennsylvania unit Full Of Hell have made massive waves within the hardcore/grind movement over the last several years via a healthy output of EPs, splits, cassettes and two full-length albums.

Keith Jarrett/Charlie Haden/Paul Motan – Hamburg ’72 CD (ECM)

The legendary Keith Jarrett Trio, playing live at NDR Funkhaus, Hamburg. The trio with Haden and Motian formed in 1966 was Jarrett s first great band, his choice of players a masterstroke. With the bassist who had learned his craft in Ornette Coleman s band, and the drummer from Bill Evans’ ground-breaking trio, Jarrett was able to explore the full scope of modern jazz, from poetic balladry to hard-swinging time-playing to ferocious and fiery free music, the improvisation including episodes with Keith on soprano sax. The interaction between the three musicians is uncanny throughout, reaching a peak in an emotion-drenched performance of Charlie Haden’s “Song For Che.

JD & The Straight Shot – Where I’ve Been CD (Caroline)

New release from the Americana rockers. Produced by Joe Walsh, Where I’ve Been features the singles “Governor’s Song,” which challenges some of today’s most well known political figures; “Under That Hood,” a transformative single that tells the story of Trayvon Martin; and “Hard To Find,” which is featured in film St. Vincent. Vinyl version due February 17.

Jethro Tull – WarChild [Reissue/1974] 2xCD/2xCD+2xDVD Audio (Rhino/Parlophone)

Digitally remastered 40th Anniversary Edition of the original version of the band’s 1974 seventh studio album. This reissue has been newly remixed by Porcupine Tree’s studio wizard Steven Wilson. Available as a double-disc and four-disc Theatre Edition box set. The expanded box set features original album and bonus tracks (three previously unreleased), remixed in 5.1 surround and stereo by Steven Wilson; 10 orchestral pieces (nine previously unreleased) written for the film s soundtrack, four of which are remixed in 5.1 surround and stereo by Steven Wilson; flat transfers of the original LP mix at 96/24, and the quadrophonic version (with two bonus tracks) in 4.0; The Third Hoorah promo footage, and footage from a January 1974 photo session/press conference where the WarChild project was announced; an 80-page booklet featuring an extensive history of the project, a film script synopsis, track-by-track annotations by Ian Anderson, plus rare and unseen photographs.

Jupiter Lion – Brighter CD/2xLP (Bcore)

Lumen Drones is a fascinating and powerful collaboration between Hardanger fiddle master Nils Økland and Per Stainar Lie and Ørjan Haaland, respectively guitarist and drummer with the Norwegian post-rock group The Low Frequency In Stereo. Specific influences include the Doors, The Velvet Underground, Sonic Youth, Durutti Column and “the jazz of the Dave Pike set,” but the Lumen Drones also rove through modal, ambient, multi-folk, minimal and noise zones.

Maino – King Of Brooklyn 2 CD (Stage One Music)

Platinum plus selling Brooklyn rapper MAINO brings the crown back out and returns with his second project of 2014. Guests include B.O.B., French Montana, and Busta Rhymes.

Maninkari – L’ocean Reve Dans Sa Loisivete CD (Three Four)

Fashioned around the theme of the ocean symbolizing the subconscious, the hidden world and a very personal concept of “loisivete” a combination of idleness and law, Maninkari continues exploring a weird and dreamlike world. As usual, the Charlot brothers resort almost exclusively to the use of acoustic instruments with oriental origins (bodhran, cymbalom, santoor, zurna). Percussion instruments especially the bodhran play melodic or textural figures, whereas stringed instruments become repetitive to a point where they embody the rhythmics.

Michael Mantler – The Jazz Composer’s Orchestra Update CD (ECM)

In 1968, composer-trumpeter Michael Mantler recorded The Jazz Composer’s Orchestra. Released by ECM, this classic, groundbreaking album of composition and improvisation featured Mantler conducting a large jazz orchestra that included some of the era’s iconic free improvisers as soloists: pianist Cecil Taylor, cornetist Don Cherry, trombonist Roswell Rudd, saxophonist Pharoah Sanders, guitarist Larry Coryell, saxophonist Gato Barbieri. With The Jazz Composer’s Orchestra Update, Mantler has re-imagined his 1960s music for the 21st century, with electric guitar and amplified string quartet added to the instrumentation.

Dave Matthews Band – Under The Table And Dreaming [Reissue/1994] 2xCD/2xLP (Sony Legacy)

Deluxe reissue newly remastered from the original flat analog tapes featuring three bonus tracks: the original studio version of live favorite ”Granny” and intimate acoustic versions of ”Dancing Nancies” and ”The Song That Jane Likes.”

Joni Mitchell – Love Has Many Faces: A Quartet, A Ballet, Waiting To Be Danced 4xCD (Elektra)

This newly remastered career-spanning box set collects 53 tracks over four discs from her early Reprise label recordings through her later Geffen Records and back, personally chosen by Joni.

Connan Mockasin – Forever Dolphin Love [Reissue/2010] CD/LP (Mexican Summer)

Reissue of Mockasin’s debut LP, originally released in 2010. Perfect slices of light-headed psych pop, constructed around spidery hooks, pitter-patter percussion and slow, sinuous grooves.

Christened CJ Ramone, the band hit the road in 1989 on an extensive world tour that culminated in 1991’s Loco Live album. CJ is back in 2014 with Last Chance To Dance, a new album of even stronger material and a stellar backing band of Steve Soto (Adolescents), Dan Root (Adolescents) and David Hidalgo Jr. (Social Distortion). With a sound and style true to the Ramones, CJ Ramone has again added to the legendary Ramones canon with a positively infectious punk rock record.

Violinist Claire Watkins loop-based experimental pop is fleshed out with an army of synthesizers, guitars, and percussion, taking this former bedroom project to new heights. Peppered with film, TV, and literary references throughout, the title of this EP is a reference to David Foster Wallace’s landmark essay E Unibus Pluram, wherein Image Fiction is described as a post-post-modernist reaction in ‘90s fiction to pop culture centric, reference-based literature. You’ll hear lyrical points of reference running the gamut from The Seventh Seal to Arrested Development.

Robert Lester Folsom – Ode To A Rainy Day: Archives 1972-1975 LP (Anthology Recordings)

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Anthology Recordings is proud to announce the reissue of Robert Lester Folsom’s extraordinary 1976 album Music And Dreams. To commemorate this repress Anthology label head Keith Abrahamsson worked closely with Alan Lomax Archive’s Executive Director Don Fleming to compile a retrospective album of Folsom’s early reel-to-reel recordings entitled Ode To A Rainy Day: Archives 1972-1975. Too young to be drafted, Robert Lester Folsom spent the ‘60s growing up in Adel, Georgia, a small town nearer to Florida’s northern border than anything resembling rock & roll. Convincing a friend to go in on a Sears reel-to-reel tape recorder, Folsom would write and record a wealth of material in the early ‘70s which make up the backbone of Ode To A Rainy Day: Archives 1972-1975. Ostensibly more homemade, if not entirely “outsider”, Ode showcases impeccable songwriting across light folk, downer pop and woodshed country tropes. The beauty of this archival album lies in its tracking of the seasons, how each song feels like a different time of year.

But every good book deserves a soundtrack and in this case it comes in the form of a four CD anthology of the LHI label, along with the never-before-released 1970 film Cowboy In Sweden on DVD. A Deluxe Edition of the box set containing all of the above housed in a cloth-bound clamshell box (gold foil stamped and featuring a debossed silhouette of Lee) with reproductions of LHI-era artifacts including press photos and a reproduction plane ticket used by Hazlewood back in ’70. But for the deluxe version the true icing on the cake is three DVD data discs which include just about every 45 single and every LP ever released on LHI – in both WAV and MP3 formats, along with cover and label art. El Mahdy Jr. and his family fled the brutal Civil war of his native Algeria in the ‘90s, relocating to Turkey. Upon returning years later to Algeria, Mahdy worked as a French-Arabic translator in Algeria and later in Burkina Faso. Sick in bed with malaria, he began to paint sonic pictures of his travels in exile; digitally decoding a hazy trance-induced melting of his native Algerian music, Turkish folk, the furious polyrhythms of West Africa, and his love of slow, low-slung rap beats.

Mary Monday & The Bitches – I Gave My Punk Jacket To Rickie 7” (HoZac)

Former stripper Mary Monday had a life shrouded in mystery, and conflicting reports in the historic documentation as to the band and Mary’s origins are still baffling punkologists to this day, including her mysterious death a few years after this single’s release. Lee Morgan – The Sidewinder [Reissue/1963] LP (Blue Note)

Recorded at Van Gelder Studio in 1963, The Sidewinder by jazz trumpeter Lee Morgan was a runaway hit that reached number 25 on the Billboard chart. The title track, now a jazz standard, is one of the most influential recordings in soul jazz. All five tracks were written by Morgan and the album features respected tenor saxophonist, Joe Henderson.

Don Murrow – Souffrances Et Extases Du Jeune Amour LP (Flannel Graph)

This collection, whose title translates as “The Sufferings And Ecstasies Of Young Love”, is full of euphoric uppers and depressing downers that float across genres as Muro lets his young emotions flow through catchy garage rockers to smooth AM gold ballads to arena-ready prog pop anthems to the analog synthesizer compositions for which he is best known. While comparisons could be made to anyone from The Zombies to Todd Rundgren to Carole King to Pilot to Elton John to Boston, the voice and direction throughout is distinctively Don Muro, who wrote, performed and recorded every note on the record.

It’s an historic album project from five of music’s finest artists — Elvis Costello, Rhiannon Giddens (Carolina Chocolate Drops), Taylor Goldsmith (Dawes), Jim James (My Morning Jacket) and Marcus Mumford (Mumford & Sons) — in unique collaboration with a 26-year-old Bob Dylan. Produced by project creator T Bone Burnett, the album was recorded in March 2014 at Capitol Studios in Hollywood, where the artists and Burnett convened for two weeks to write and create music for a treasure trove of long-lost lyrics handwritten by Bob Dylan in 1967 during the period that generated the recording of the legendary Basement Tapes. The collective completed and recorded dozens of songs, the first 20 of which appear on this album.

Vinyl Reissue of the great second album by the soul singer. Peebles was born in St. Louis, Missouri, the seventh child of eleven. As a child she began singing in the choir of her father’s church and with the family’s group, the Peebles Choir, who regularly opened shows for gospel stars including Mahalia Jackson and the Soul Stirrers featuring Sam Cooke. She was also influenced by R&B performers, including Muddy Waters, Mary Wells and Aretha Franklin.

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. The Rolling Stones American Tour in 1981 was the most successful tour of that year taking a then record $50 million dollars in ticket sales. The tour was in support of the critically and commercially successful Tattoo You album. There were fifty dates on the tour which ran from Philadelphia at the end of September through to Hampton, Virginia on the 18th and 19th of December. The show on December 18th, which was also Keith Richards birthday, was the first ever music concert to be broadcast on television as a pay-per-view event. The footage has now been carefully restored with remixed/remastered audio by Bob Clearmountain for this first official release of the show.

Secret Pyramid – The Silent March [2011] LP (Students Of Decay)

Originally released in 2011 on cassette, The Silent March is the precursor to 2013’s Movements Of Night and can be viewed as something of a mission statement for Amir Abbey’s skyriding Secret Pyramid project. Critics have compared the Secret Pyramid sound to the more blasted entries in the Popul Vuh catalog and to Flying Saucer Attack’s cherished fuzz devotionals, and indeed Abbey’s reverb-drenched song forms and titanic edifices of drone do feel at times as though they’ve been cut from the same cloth.

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. It’s difficult to neatly categorize Luke Wyatt’s genre-refracting productions. The nuts and bolts are built from live guitar, drum machines, junky synths, and layers of samples which are smeared into a cohesive whole. His guitar moves between the meditations of Manuel Gottsching, the jangle-grid of The Chameleons, and the saturation of Medicine. Throw in the melodrama of a sax on a Don Henley hit, and you get a better idea of his playfully sincere sensibility.

Otto A. Totland – Pino LP (Sonic Pieces)

Released earlier this year on CD – now available on vinyl. The recognizable continuation of Totland’s compositions will attract fans of Deaf Center, and the cinematic and classical components of his solo work will hold sway for those familiar with Harold Budd or Dustin O’Halloran.

The Travelling Archive is a journey through the folk music of Bengal. It is run by Calcutta-based Bengali singer, writer and researcher, Moushumi Bhowmik, and sound recordist and sound designer, Sukanta Majumdar. They have been making field recordings of songs and stories across Bangladesh and eastern India, even the Bengali diaspora in East London, since 2003; documenting and disseminating their research through archives, presentation-performances, art works, and their own independent record label and web site.

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Tell ‘Em I’m Gone is the first new Yusuf album to be released since 2009’s acclaimed Roadsinger. Recorded all over the world, including Los Angeles, Dubai, Brussels, and London, the album features 10 brand-new studio recordings, including five originals and five carefully-chosen cover songs. Tell ‘Em I’m Gone features musical contributions from Richard Thompson, blues harmonica legend Charlie Musselwhite, singer/songwriter Bonnie ‘Prince’ Billy, Tuareg group Tinariwen, and guitarist Matt Sweeney.
