Aucan – Stelle Fisse CD (Kowloon)

Founded on the concept of permanent crisis and continual refinement, Italian trio Aucan seams together hypnotic live rhythms and moody electronics using a precise, minimalist post-rock approach. Much evolved from their origins as a math-rock outfit, Aucan’s gear and synth collection expanded over the years informs the band’s current incarnation which is most notorious for their striking 100% hardware live shows.

Benny Sings – Studio CD/LP (Jakarta)

Benny Sings is a Dutch vocalist and songwriter whose music embraces the sunny melodic structures of pop music from the 1960s and ’70s, while fusing them with arrangements and production influenced by hip-hip and electronic music.

Bibio – Fi [Reissue/2005] CD/LP+MP3 (Warp)

Bibio’s debut album Fi (originally released on the Mush imprint) scored instant credibility in 2005 with a ringing endorsement from Boards Of Canada’s Marcus Eoin, which summed up the record percectly: “Bibio is the antidote to the modern laptopia of pristine electronic music, curing us with majestic drones, gnarly disintegrating guitars and warbling tape loops filtered through your parent’s broken 1970’s hi-fi.”

Björk – Vulnicura Strings CD (One Little Indian)

Björk presents a strings version of her highly-acclaimed eighth studio studio album Vulnicura, officially titled Vulnicura Strings. The original version of Vulnicura layered the boom and crack of electronic beats with an intense vocal melody and incredible string arrangements by Björk which have been performed live with a fifteen chair orchestra. The new version is musically wholly comprised of strings, with new violin solos by Una Sveinbjarnardóttir and strings recorded by a Viola Organista. Björk used the only Viola Organista in the world to perform some of the arrangements; an instrument which was designed originally by Leonardo Da Vinci but not built until after his lifetime. The instrument uses a friction belt to vibrate individual strings (similar to a violin), with the strings selected by pressing keys on the keyboard (similar to an organ). The instrument was recorded in Krakow, Poland by it’s constructor Slawomir Zubrzycki and here is where the album reached completion. Vinyl version due December 11.

Circles Around The Sun – Interludes For The Dead 2xCD/2xLP (Rhino)

When the Grateful Dead played their Fare Thee Well shows earlier this year, music by psychedelic jam-rockers Circles Around The Sun kept the crowd entertained during the intermissions. The group, led by Chris Robinson Brotherhood guitarist and occasional Phil Lesh and Friends guest Neal Casal, came together at the request of filmmaker Justin Kreutzmann (Dead member Bill’s son) to record a soundtrack to the visuals he prepared for the concerts. Highlights from those recordings are presented on the double-disc Interludes For The Dead.

Danzig – Skeletons CD (Nuclear Blast)

New album from the metal/punk band fronted by vocalist Glenn Danzig, best known for his work with the Misfits and Samhain. Skeletons is an album of cover versions with Danzig’s unique take on songs originally performed by artists ranging from Elvis Presley to Black Sabbath. “My attitude with covers is, make it your own or else leave it alone” — Glenn Danzig. Deadbeat – Walls & Dimensions CD/3xLP+MP3 (Blkrtz)

Scott Monteith’s tenth Deadbeat album, Walls & Dimensions, sees Monteith showcasing his wide-ranging musical interests with a striking sense of gravity and cutting lyricism not heard in his previous works. Featuring guest vocal contributions from Fink, Delhia de France, and Elif Bicer, as well as cello performances by Maarten Vos, Walls & Dimensions sees Monteith exploring all facets of his musical interests with deadly focus and passion, from pure ambient drones to heartfelt reggae blues and dubbed-out late-night club bangers.

Deepchord – Ultraviolet Music 2xCD (Soma)

Judy Dyble – Anthology: Part One CD/2xLP+MP3 (Earth Recordings)

Earlier this year, Judy Dyble (Fairport Convention, Trader Horne, Giles Giles & Fripp) issued Gathering The Threads, a three-CD anthology of all the fragments that make up her career. Here, the first disc of the triptych is released separately, as Anthology: Part One. Compromising rare, unreleased and hard-to-find tracks—many of which have never before been issued—these 15 songs bring together Judy’s most prolific period as a musician.

The Flaming Lips – Heady Nuggs: 20 Years After Clouds Taste Metallic 1994-1997 3xCD (Reprise)

Clouds Taste Metallic, the band’s seventh album, is considered one of The Lips’ best and earned them much critical fanfare. Released in 1995, Clouds Taste Metallic is also the last Lips album to feature guitarist Ronald Jones. Heady Nuggs: 20 Years After Clouds Taste Metallic 1994-1997 features the entirety of Clouds Taste Metallic plus the rarities The King Bug Laughs (Oddities And Rarities) (a collection of previously unreleased, promo-only, and compilation-only tracks gathered together and available for the first time ever in one place. Also includes a promo-only compilation entitled Due To High Expectations The Flaming Lips Are Providing Needles For Your Balloons, and then a previously unreleased live recording of the band’s club show at Moe’s captured in Seattle on May 10th, 1996. Digitally remastered and expanded 20th Anniversary edition of this 1995 album by the alt-rock trio. Includes seven previously unreleased tracks, all recorded live at The Academy in New York back in November of 1995. A Boy Named Goo was the Goo Goo Dolls’ last studio album for Metal Blade Records. The song “Name” is well known as the Goo Goo Dolls’ first hit. Although renowned for their commercially successful 1998 single “Iris,” they have had several other notable and popular singles including “Name.”

Too Old To Rock ‘n’ Roll, Too Young To Die! is Jethro Tull’s concept album about an aging rocker and now features unreleased music and footage recorded for a British TV special. This remastered reissue is presented in two versions: Regular double-CD edition and Deluxe four-disc CD+DVD-Audio edition. Highlights from the Deluxe set include an unreleased, alternate version of the album recorded for a British television special and remixed by Steven Wilson, bonus tracks (18 previously unreleased), all mixed to 5.1 surround and stereo by Steven Wilson, flat transfer of the original LP mix at 96/24, commercial debut of footage from the television special and more. Presented in a case-bound DVD book that includes an 80-page booklet with an extensive history of the album, track-by-track annotations by Ian Anderson, plus rare and unseen photographs. George Jones – Sings White Lightning And 29 Other Favorites [Reissue/1959] CD (Southern Routes)

An expanded edition of Jones’ ultra-rare 1959 album White Lightning showcases 30 gems from his formative years on the Starday, Dixie and Mercury record labels (originally issued between 1953 and 1961).

Krokofant – Krokofant II CD/LP (Rune Grammofon)

This young, semi-improvising power trio typify a new and invigorating movement currently sweeping across the Nordic region: hard boiled improvisation and strong instrumental personalities bolted onto rock beats and driving rhythms. Equally powerful on record and on stage, Krokofant pull no punches, sounding like some unholy three-way marriage of early ’70s jazz rock (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Terje Rypdal, Ray Russell), the sprawling progressive odysseys of King Crimson and Henry Cow, and the fierce heat of Peter Brötzmann’s harsh free jazz ensembles.

Leftover Crack – Constructs Of The State CD/LP+MP3 (Fat Wreck Chords)

Drawing on the success of their first iteration, Choking Victim, Leftover Crack took ska/punk/crust to new heights with the innovation of what they cheekily dubbed “squat-core.” Their sound infuses hardcore, metal, ska, classical, grindcore, folk and various other elements into what has become the gold standard of the modern crust/punk genre. LOC’s latest full-length and first since 2004, Constructs Of The State, is a jarring reminder of that fact.

Lubomyr Melnyk – Rivers And Streams CD/LP (Erased Tapes)

Lubomyr Melnyk (born December 22, 1948) is a Ukrainian composer and pianist who has pioneered ‘Continuous Piano Music’. Affected by the minimalist movement in the early 1970s, he has developed his own unique language for the piano, named after the principle of maintaining a continuous, unbroken stream of sound.

Miss Lana Rebel & Kevin Michael Mayfield – Midtown Island Sessions CD/LP (FPE)

Once again teamed up with her trusted cohort, the supremely talented singer and multi-instrumentalist Kevin Michael Mayfield, Miss Lana Rebel and her backing band deliver one twang-stained confessional after another chronicling their own days spent wandering life’s inhospitable deserts, where darkness and despair often overcame them. We’re talking some serious homage to the more rugged offerings of Patsy Montana & The Prairie Ramblers, the great Ernest Tubb & Bob Willis & His Texas Playboys, even the thick “hillbilly”-era old-time fiddle style, here.

Mogwai – Central Belters 3xCD/6xLP+MP3 (Chemikal Underground/Rock Action)

This Mogwai carreer retrospective marks their 20th anniversary, and contains highlights from their discography including non-album singles and some rarities.

Motorpsycho – Supersonic Scientists: A Young Person’s Guide To Motorpsycho CD/2xLP (Rune Grammofon)

The first-ever Motorpsycho anthology, released in conjunction with a 2015 retrospective exhibition at Rockheim, Norway’s national museum of pop and rock music, in the band’s hometown of Trondheim. Roughly containing one song from every studio album proper since 1993 as well as a couple of outsiders, this serves as an excellent introduction to newcomers and latecomers, but should also be of great interest to fans.

Mr. Lif – I Phantom [Reissue/2002] CD/2xLP (Mello Music)

Inspired by eloquent and irate predecessors like Public Enemy and KRS-One, rapper Mr. Lif (born Jeffrey Haynes) created a scathing indictment of life in the Bush era. Originally released on the seminal indie rap imprint Def Jux, Lif’s debut LP is back in print on CD and colored vinyl. Guests on I Phantom include Run The Jewels’ El-P, Aesop Rock, Jean Grae and more.

Molly Nilsson – Zenith CD/LP (Night School)

Zenith finds Nilsson reveling in big arrangements, sweeping synth strings, bigger choruses and emotions.

Other Houses – Bad Reputation CD/LP/Cassette (Aagoo)

Debut full-length LP from the solo moniker of multi-instrumentalist Morgan Enos, known otherwise as the vocalist for doom/shoegaze band Hollow Sunshine. Bad Reputation is winsome, homespun, and crackling with pop energy. The songs, indebted to Enos’ power-pop heroes Big Star, The Byrds and Guided By Voices, keep a sense of heart, concision and personality.

Bobby Rush – Chicken Heads: A 50-Year History Of Bobby Rush 4xCD (Omnivore)

The five-decade career of Bobby Rush is captured on five-hour box set, containing nearly 100 tracks from across his career. It comes with a 32-page booklet containing commentary from Mavis Staples, Keb’ Mo’, Elvin Bishop, Leon Huff and others. Rush was named B.B. King Entertainer Of The Year and Best Male Blues Artist at this year’s Blues Music Awards.

S.O.D. – Speak English Or Die [30^th Anniversary Edition/Reissue/1985] CD (Megaforce)

Digitally remastered and expanded edition featuring bonus tracks that include demo recordings from the pre-Stromtroopers Of Death project Crab Society North. S.O.D. was a crossover thrash band formed in New York in 1985. They are credited as being among the first bands to fuse hardcore punk with thrash metal into a style sometimes referred to as crossover thrash, and is also known for reuniting Anthrax members Scott Ian (guitars) and Charlie Benante (drums) with their former bassist Dan Lilker.

Ty Segall – Ty Rex CD/LP (Goner)

The Ty Rex corner of Ty Segall’s oeuvre represents the nom-de-rock behind which the artist puts his spin on favored Tyrannosaurus Rex and T. Rex compositions. With previous releases now dwelling in out-of-print nether-regions, the album compiles the six-song Ty Rex EP (aka Ty Rex I, originally released by Goner as a limited edition 12” for Record Store Day 2011) and the two-song Ty Rex II 7” (RSD 2013). As if this wasn’t enough of a corrective gesture, Ty Rex is expanded to include a previously-unreleased cover as a bonus.

Rett Smith – Tularosa CDEP (Groundsounds)

Featuring a distinct musicality that conjures up hard luck blues, outlaw country and early rock ‘n’ roll, New York based singer/songwriter Rett Smith drops a six-track EP of modern bluesy rock.

SOPHIE – PRODUCT CD/LP (Numbers)

“Charli XCX collaborator and McDonald’s-approved producer SOPHIE has announced a new mini-LP of eight singles. He’s a hyper-pop producer who toys with the ideas of maximalism and pop’s synthetic nature, and his alignment with PC Music places him squarely in the meta nexus of art and commercialization. Gloria Ann Taylor – Love Is A Hurtin’ Thing CD/2xLP (Ubiquity)

Soul singer Gloria Ann Taylor has no rags to riches tale to tell. Her story is one of personal sacrifice, failed relationships, and missed opportunity. She was leading a hard knock life before being swept-up by the flash and promise of a marriage and business partnership with a successful record producer. She would be nominated for a Grammy, rub shoulders with James Brown and Bootsy Collins, and turn heads from Motown. But in the end she rejected professional singing, the music business, and the lifestyle that came with it. Thankfully for music lovers, before Gloria closed the doors on her singing career, she left us with some amazing soul songs. Deeply shaded by gospel roots, her haunting sound clearly comes from the gut. Gloria did not fake the funk.

Teenage Jesus & The Jerks – Live 1977-1979 CD/LP (Other People)

The Melvins – Across the USA in 51 Days: The Movie DVD (Ipecac)

Sludge-slingin’ noise-rock giants The Melvins deliver a full-length documentary behind a 2012 tour of the US that had them playing 51 shows in 51 days. The band had announced at the time that they were lobbying for a spot in the Guinness Book of World Records for “fastest-ever tour of all 50 U.S. states, plus Washington, DC.” The fall 2012 trip started off in Anchorage, AK, on September 5, and capped with an October 25 finale in Honolulu, Hawaii. That said, while they completed the trip, it was later revealed that George Thorogood and the Destroyers beat the Melvins to the title back in the early ’80s.

The Quay Brothers – Collected Short Films Blu-ray (Zeitgeist Films)

Featuring fifteen of Quay Brothers’ remarkable films in beautiful hi-def transfers made under the personal supervision of the Quay Brothers. Heavy, heady and hypnotic, All Them Witches concoct a powerful and potent psychedelic sound that fuses bluesy soul, Southern swagger and thunderous hard rock. “There are undoubtedly some throwback vibes to their sound, but ATW sound like they have bigger goals in mind than simply being a retro band. Album single ‘Dirt Preachers’ has clear production and the kind of big, catchy melodies that could’ve broke on the radio just as easily in 1975 as 2005. Edward David Anderson – Lower Alabama: The Loxley Sessions LP (The Royal Potato Family)

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Anderson returns with his second solo album — a nine-track effort is the most stripped-down and roots-based album. The resulting collection floats melodiously on rivers of fiddle and clouds of pedal steel, on gentle acoustic guitars and hints of piano, dusted with some ghostly guitar from Will Kimbrough and striking vocal harmony from Crawford’s wife, singer Savana Lee.

Au Pair – One Armed Candy Bear LP (Sham)

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. “Au Pair is a meeting of the minds between the Jayhawks’ Gary Louris and the Old Ceremony’s Django Haskins. They met while participating in a Big Star tribute concert in 2013, and that band’s power-pop is a big part of Au Pair’s DNA. ‘In Every Window,’ from the duo’s [new] album One Armed Candy Bear, reminds me of the Zombies’ ‘Care Of Cell 44’ in that it is a bright, breezy pop song about a criminal. But whereas Rod Argent was writing to an imprisoned lover, Louris and Haskins penned this one from a stalker’s point of view.” – Stereogum

Kelsea Ballerini – The First Time LP (Black River Entertainment)

Released in May on CD – now available on vinyl. Hailing from Knoxville, TN, singer/songwriter Kelsea Ballerini moved to Nashville, TN at age 15 to chase the dream of becoming a songwriter. The First Time is her debut album.

Originally released in 1964, Zulu is among the most popular of John Barry’s early soundtracks, and the main theme is still frequently heard on radio, conjuring up images of the British Army’s defense of (and the Zulus’ fearless assault on) Rorke’s Drift during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, as depicted in Cy Endfield’s BAFTA-nominated 1964 film starring Stanley Baker, Michael Caine, and Jack Hawkins.

These days, Bell is a solo artist under her full name, releasing an album sung completely in Russian last year called Krai and following that up this year with a new EP. Maybe sharing a label with Björk inspired Bell to channel some of her head-thrown-back pathos (although Bell is already on the record as a fan). The title track ‘Incitation’ submerges dark and discordant brass under angular synths and frenzied beats. The set of instrumental pieces entitled French Kayaking Music was written for and inspired by the film Voyagers Without Trace; a documentary about a French trio who kayaked the Green and Colorado rivers in 1938. When Jenny Conlee (Decemberists/Black Prairie) heard that the film’s director Ian McCluskey was looking for original music with a French flavor, a creative relationship was begun. Conlee was, at this time, delving deep into French accordion music. She was listening to old recordings and learning the style from books of French Musettes.

Formed by Adris Hoyos and Bill Orcutt, the duo became legendary for their volatile live shows, which often devolved into violent clashes with audience members. Originally released on Siltbreeze, their self-titled debut album reveals an antagonistic and visceral approach to music: Hoyos’ self-taught, wild-style drums and shrouded screams tangling with Orcutt’s high-tension blues guitar.

In the mid-1970s, Parisian composer and multi-instrumentalist Thierry Müller began operating primarily under the Ilitch moniker. It comes as no surprise that Nurse With Wound included Müller on their famed list of influential avant-garde artists. Originally released on Oxygene Records in 1978, Ilitch’s debut Periodikmindtrouble was a shot across the bow for the French underground scene. Comprised of instrumental four-track recordings made in Müller’s dorm room, the album features gritty tape loops, analog synth swells and angst-ridden guitars. 10 Suicides explores a more art-damaged pop sensibility.

Kristín Anna – Howl 2xLP (Women’s Work)

At the age of 18, Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir left behind a relatively normal teenage life in Reykjavik to live in the remote Icelandic countryside, recording and performing as a founding member of the psychedelic folk band múm. Classically trained as a pianist, she held down a vital, shifting role as singer and instrumentalist, playing the accordion, bass, piano and banjo. After several years she reemerged as Kría Brekkan, a solo artist. Since this rebirth, Kristín Anna has performed internationally in music and visual arts contexts, debuting as Kría Brekkan at the Stone in New York, later touring with Animal Collective and the Icelandic band Stórsveit Nix Noltes, and appearing more recently at MOMA and PS1, ATP England and the Clockwork Gallery. In the Spring of 2013 Kristín Anna made the journey from Iceland to the Mohave Desert in California to record a site-specific piece for Women’s Work Recordings. This mysteriously beguiling work, aptly titled Howl, comes as close to an abstract painting as any music can, or perhaps it is figurative, using the voice as charged brush, giving life to a range of ethereal wonders.

Eji Oyewole – Charity Begins At Home LP (BBE)

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. A long-lost classic from the golden age of African music, from a figure who is still beginning to get his props internationally, Eji Oyewole. Eji was part of the huge craze for ‘highlife’, a generic term that in fact subsumed many different styles, united in their fusion of traditional west African forms with jazz influences and electric instruments, and in the bands’ working practices as entertainers at the nation’s numerous hotel/nightclubs. As this cracking album, recorded for EMI Nigeria at the tail end of the ’70s and now remastered, reveals, Eji’s version of highlife was even more distinctive than most, eschewing the usual emphasis on guitars for a brasher, horn-laden sound, seemingly influenced as much by American funk as it was jazz, and of course with the heavy percussive undertow central to most African music.

Vinyl reissue of the seminal 1972 album from Serge Gainsbourg’s right-hand man Jean-Claude Vannier. Recorded during the same sessions as Gainsbourg’s highly acclaimed masterpiece Melody Nelson it follows in a similar avant-garde rock-opera vein. L’Enfant Assasin Des Mouches (The Child Fly-Killer) is a supernatural tale written by Gainsbourg depicting the journey of the young child travelling through a nightmarish “Fly Kingdom.” Vannier narrates the story with sparse music concrete sounds coupled with choirs, funky beats, cowbells, wah-wah guitars and ethnic strings. Comparisons could be made with some of Frank Zappa’s Hot Rats material and Alain Goraguer’s creepy Le Planet Sauvge.

American country music was formed by the encounter between African American forms of music such as blues and gospel and British, Irish and Scottish ballads, jigs and reels. But blues music began to change in the late 1940s into a much faster, more upbeat style of music that was first called jump blues and later rhythm and blues, to distinguish it from its slower, more traditional ancestor. When country music encountered this new rhythm and blues music, the result was a new and uniquely American hybrid known as rockabilly. If country and hillbilly music were the soundtrack of the rural South, rockabilly was the equivalent in the white urban south, a music that seemed to follow the migrations of its creators and fans, with one foot in the country they left behind and one in the city they had moved to. The classic era of rockabilly was fairly brief, encompassing the years from 1954 to 1960, but those years produced quintessential American records and artists that remain American icons, and helped lay the foundation for rock and roll.

Laurence Vaynay – La Petite Fenêtre LP (Lion Productions)

Jacqueline Thibault (Laurence Vaynay) often worked for other artists at the legendary Château d’Hérouville studio as arranger, keyboardist, co-composer, and assistant sound engineer. Between sessions she sometimes managed to record her own music. Several years after her two acknowledged masterpieces, Galaxies and Evening Colours, she was able to bring together the tracks for La Petite Fenêtre (The Little Window). As the 1970s ended, trouble with the Château finances meant that again it was impossible for her to present her work to interested record labels.

The Venom – Arringtons, Crombies, Anarchy Bondage LP (Radio Raheem)

Initially taking influence from the first wave of ’77 British punk like the Sex Pistols and Clash, it wasn’t until after an enforced hiatus resulting from a spot of “football violence” that The Venom really came into it’s own. Lumped in with the expanding Oi! scene, they recorded three self-funded sessions—which produced the songs on this record—but their only proper releases were contributions to two compilations.

Complete First Demo collects eight songs that Youth Brigade recorded with Don Zientara and Skip Groff in the summer of 1981 during its first recording session. “I Object” appeared on the 20 Years Of Dischord box set and “Last Word” was included on Flex Your Head. All other material is previously unreleased. This edition of the record has been pressed on orange vinyl.

Legendary Hearts – Music From The Elevator (Not Not Fun)

Miasmic Melbourne new age prog duo Legendary Hearts (aka Andrew Cowie + Kieran Hegarty) first entered the public eye/ear in 2012 but their music has only grown more opaque with age. Music From The Elevator is their 2012 debut, originally released via the Dungeon Taxis label, and captures their chemistry in altered states of sprawl, symbiosis, and swoon. Six expressionistic oozes of infinity gauntlet guitar, slow-motion drum machines, and warping synth, filtering in and out of focus like glares against glass, unfeeling neon aglow in smoke and smog.

Debut full-length LP from the solo moniker of multi-instrumentalist Morgan Enos, known otherwise as the vocalist for doom/shoegaze band Hollow Sunshine. Bad Reputation is winsome, homespun, and crackling with pop energy. The songs, indebted to Enos’ power-pop heroes Big Star, The Byrds and Guided By Voices, keep a sense of heart, concision and personality.

X.Y.R. – Mental Journey To B.C. (Not Not Fun)

Russian Federation ambient fantasist Vladimir Karpov aka X.Y.R. (aka Xram Yedinennogo Razmuwlenuja) usually frames his decaying Soviet analog synthesizer pieces within “illusory worlds” – lost cities of gold (El Dorado), polar oblivion (Arktika), deserted equatorial islands (Robinson Crusoe: Lost Soundtrack) – but his latest collection less conjures a place than a time. The mood of Mental Journey To B.C. is pre-human: obscure landscapes hissing in the heat, shimmering in the dark, uninhabited, unreal. Humid loops of Formanta Mini and smoke-ring keys float over hushed jungle metronomes and moonlit field recordings.
