Bibio’s debut album Fi (originally released on the Mush imprint) scored instant credibility in 2005 with a ringing endorsement from Boards Of Canada’s Marcus Eoin, which summed up the record percectly: “Bibio is the antidote to the modern laptopia of pristine electronic music, curing us with majestic drones, gnarly disintegrating guitars and warbling tape loops filtered through your parent’s broken 1970’s hi-fi.”
Björk – Vulnicura Strings CD (One Little Indian)
Björk presents a strings version of her highly-acclaimed eighth studio studio album Vulnicura, officially titled Vulnicura Strings. The original version of Vulnicura layered the boom and crack of electronic beats with an intense vocal melody and incredible string arrangements by Björk which have been performed live with a fifteen chair orchestra. The new version is musically wholly comprised of strings, with new violin solos by Una Sveinbjarnardóttir and strings recorded by a Viola Organista. Björk used the only Viola Organista in the world to perform some of the arrangements; an instrument which was designed originally by Leonardo Da Vinci but not built until after his lifetime. The instrument uses a friction belt to vibrate individual strings (similar to a violin), with the strings selected by pressing keys on the keyboard (similar to an organ). The instrument was recorded in Krakow, Poland by it’s constructor Slawomir Zubrzycki and here is where the album reached completion. Vinyl version due December 11.
Circles Around The Sun – Interludes For The Dead 2xCD/2xLP (Rhino)
When the Grateful Dead played their Fare Thee Well shows earlier this year, music by psychedelic jam-rockers Circles Around The Sun kept the crowd entertained during the intermissions. Horrendous – Anareta CD (Dark Descent)
Recent. “The Philadelphia death metal trio Horrendous were dubbed vintage revivalists just three years ago, with their 2012 debut The Chills. But their sound opened up drastically for Ecdysis, the album’s glimpses of outside influences earning the band increased attention. On Anareta, a record captured during one obsessive, month-long session spent sequestered in bandleader Damian Herring’s home studio, Horrendous’ playbook feels truly open. It’s as if, bona fides well established, the band set out to form a link between the past they once embraced and a future they imagine.” [8.2] – Pitchfork

Krokofant – Krokofant II CD/LP (Rune Grammofon)
This young, semi-improvising power trio typify a new and invigorating movement currently sweeping across the Nordic region: hard boiled improvisation and strong instrumental personalities bolted onto rock beats and driving rhythms. Equally powerful on record and on stage, Krokofant pull no punches, sounding like some unholy three-way marriage of early ’70s jazz rock (Mahavishnu Orchestra, Terje Rypdal, Ray Russell), the sprawling progressive odysseys of King Crimson and Henry Cow, and the fierce heat of Peter Brötzmann’s harsh free jazz ensembles.
Leftover Crack – Constructs Of The State CD/LP+MP3 (Fat Wreck Chords)
Drawing on the success of their first iteration, Choking Victim, Leftover Crack took ska/punk/crust to new heights with the innovation of what they cheekily dubbed “squat-core.” Their sound infuses hardcore, metal, ska, classical, grindcore, folk and various other elements into what has become the gold standard of the modern crust/punk genre. LOC’s latest full-length and first since 2004, Constructs Of The State, is a jarring reminder of that fact.

Miss Lana Rebel & Kevin Michael Mayfield – Midtown Island Sessions CD/LP (FPE)
Once again teamed up with her trusted cohort, the supremely talented singer and multi-instrumentalist Kevin Michael Mayfield, Miss Lana Rebel and her backing band deliver one twang-stained confessional after another chronicling their own days spent wandering life’s inhospitable deserts, where darkness and despair often overcame them. We’re talking some serious homage to the more rugged offerings of Patsy Montana & The Prairie Ramblers, the great Ernest Tubb & Bob Willis & His Texas Playboys, even the thick “hillbilly”-era old-time fiddle style, here.
Mogwai – Central Belters 3xCD/6xLP+MP3 (Chemikal Underground/Rock Action)

Guests on I Phantom include Run The Jewels’ El-P, Aesop Rock, Jean Grae and more.

Other Houses – Bad Reputation CD/LP/Cassette (Aagoo)
Debut full-length LP from the solo moniker of multi-instrumentalist Morgan Enos, known otherwise as the vocalist for doom/shoegaze band Hollow Sunshine. Bad Reputation is winsome, homespun, and crackling with pop energy. The songs, indebted to Enos’ power-pop heroes Big Star, The Byrds and Guided By Voices, keep a sense of heart, concision and personality.

Ty Segall – Ty Rex CD/LP (Goner)
The Ty Rex corner of Ty Segall’s oeuvre represents the nom-de-rock behind which the artist puts his spin on favored Tyrannosaurus Rex and T. Rex compositions. With previous releases now dwelling in out-of-print nether-regions, the album compiles the six-song Ty Rex EP (aka Ty Rex I, originally released by Goner as a limited edition 12” for Record Store Day 2011) and the two-song Ty Rex II 7” (RSD 2013). As if this wasn’t enough of a corrective gesture, Ty Rex is expanded to include a previously-unreleased cover as a bonus.

Featuring a distinct musicality that conjures up hard luck blues, outlaw country and early rock ‘n’ roll, New York based singer/songwriter Rett Smith drops a six-track EP of modern bluesy rock.
SOPHIE – PRODUCT CD/LP (Numbers)
“Charli XCX collaborator and McDonald’s-approved producer SOPHIE has announced a new mini-LP of eight singles. He’s a hyper-pop producer who toys with the ideas of maximalism and pop’s synthetic nature, and his alignment with PC Music places him squarely in the meta nexus of art and commercialization. The man has worked with Madonna and Red Bull” –Idolator. (All SOPHIE 12” vinyl singles have been repressed and are available this week.)
Soundtrack – Jaco [OST] CD (Sony Legacy)
Original soundtrack to the 2015 documentary (which is also available on DVD and Blu-ray this week) about the revolutionary jazz bassist Jaco Pastorius. Includes all the B-sides from the singles released off the album, live tracks, and more.
Gloria Ann Taylor – Love Is A Hurtin’ Thing CD/2xLP (Ubiquity)
Soul singer Gloria Ann Taylor has no rags to riches tale to tell. Her story is one of personal sacrifice, failed relationships, and missed opportunity. She was leading a hard knock life before being swept-up by the flash and promise of a marriage and business partnership with a successful record producer. She would be nominated for a Grammy, rub shoulders with James Brown and Bootsy Collins, and turn heads from Motown. But in the end she rejected professional singing, the music business, and the lifestyle that came with it. Thankfully for music lovers, before Gloria closed the doors on her singing career, she left us with some amazing soul songs. Deeply shaded by gospel roots, her haunting sound clearly comes from the gut. Gloria did not fake the funk.
Teenage Jesus & The Jerks – Live 1977-1979 CD/LP (Other People)

Whore Paint – Ultra Sound CD (Translation Loss)
“The next time one of your chucklehead friends lips off and says something incredibly Cro-Magnon-like such as, ‘Girls can’t play metal,’ or ‘Chicks don’t know how to play really heavy music,’ you might want to smile and put on the new Whore Paint record, Ultra Sound. Not only do these ladies from Providence, Rhode Island, know how to play heavy music, they know how to do it incredibly f**king well.” – Skulls N Bones

This Week’s Vinyl Exclusives:
Agent Orange – Demos And More LP (Gummopunx)
17 demos and rarities from the legendary Dutch hardcore band.
All Them Witches – Dying Surfer Meets His Maker LP+MP3 (New West)
Recently released on CD – now available on (white) vinyl. Heavy, heady and hypnotic, All Them Witches concoct a powerful and potent psychedelic sound that fuses bluesy soul, Southern swagger and thunderous hard rock. “There are undoubtedly some throwback vibes to their sound, but ATW sound like they have bigger goals in mind than simply being a retro band. Album single ‘Dirt Preachers’ has clear production and the kind of big, catchy melodies that could’ve broke on the radio just as easily in 1975 as 2005. It probably won’t now though, which says more about rock radio than it does about the strength of this song.” – Brooklyn Vegan
All Time Highs – Divinity 7” (Valley King)
All Time Highs is a five-piece from Oakland, California which has quickly emerged as one of the San Francisco Bay Area’s premier rock ‘n’ roll bands. The band’s influences range from Jerry Lee Lewis, Chuck Berry, MC5, AC/DC, New York Dolls, Thin Lizzy and Motörhead.
Anal C*nt – Morbid Florist [Reissue/1993] 12” (Relapse)
First time on vinyl in over 20 years. Includes an etched B-side.
Edward David Anderson – Lower Alabama: The Loxley Sessions LP (The Royal Potato Family)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Anderson returns with his second solo album — a nine-track effort is the most stripped-down and roots-based album. The resulting collection floats melodiously on rivers of fiddle and clouds of pedal steel, on gentle acoustic guitars and hints of piano, dusted with some ghostly guitar from Will Kimbrough and striking vocal harmony from Crawford’s wife, singer Savana Lee.
Au Pair – One Armed Candy Bear LP (Sham)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. “Au Pair is a meeting of the minds between the Jayhawks’ Gary Louris and the Old Ceremony’s Django Haskins. They met while participating in a Big Star tribute concert in 2013, and that band’s power-pop is a big part of Au Pair’s DNA. ‘In Every Window,’ from the duo’s [new] album One Armed Candy Bear, reminds me of the Zombies’ ‘Care Of Cell 44’ in that it is a bright, breezy pop song about a criminal. But whereas Rod Argent was writing to an imprisoned lover, Louris and Haskins penned this one from a stalker’s point of view.” – Stereogum
Kelsea Ballerini – The First Time LP (Black River Entertainment)
Released in May on CD – now available on vinyl. Hailing from Knoxville, TN, singer/songwriter Kelsea Ballerini moved to Nashville, TN at age 15 to chase the dream of becoming a songwriter. The First Time is her debut album.
John Barry – Zulu [Reissue/1966] LP (Fantastic)
Originally released in 1964, Zulu is among the most popular of John Barry’s early soundtracks, and the main theme is still frequently heard on radio, conjuring up images of the British Army’s defense of (and the Zulus’ fearless assault on) Rorke’s Drift during the Anglo-Zulu War of 1879, as depicted in Cy Endfield’s BAFTA-nominated 1964 film starring Stanley Baker, Michael Caine, and Jack Hawkins.
Olga Bell – Incitation LP (One Little Indian)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. “After the Dirty Projectors split with Angel Deradoorian, they added Olga Bell to their lineup for 2012’s Swing Lo Magellan. But we’ve been covering Olga Bell since she was in the collaborative outfit Bell, a 2008-era Band To Watch. These days, Bell is a solo artist under her full name, releasing an album sung completely in Russian last year called Krai and following that up this year with a new EP. Maybe sharing a label with Björk inspired Bell to channel some of her head-thrown-back pathos (although Bell is already on the record as a fan). The title track ‘Incitation’ submerges dark and discordant brass under angular synths and frenzied beats. It would feel disorganized if it wasn’t for the sharp stab of her voice piercing through the noise.” – Stereogum
Bells Of – Bells Of: 00/85 LP (The Move Sounds)
The very first studio recording of the DC indie punk band from their inaugural year of 1985.
Marco Benevento – Dropkick b/w Little Girl 7” (The Royal Potato Family)
Marco Benevento continues to reinvent himself with “Dropkick,” an instantly infectious dance rock number. “Dropkick” has been popping up regularly as an encore in Benevento’s sets and finds the much adored pianist becoming a full-fledged singer, a component of his work that was only just introduced to his sound on last year’s LP, Swift. The B-side is Benevento’s take on The Crystals’ cult fave “Little Boy,” updated here as “Little Girl,” which presents a re-imagination of Phil Spector’s Wall of Sound production found on the original recording.
The Black Dahlia Murder – Abysmal LP (Metal Blade)

Boy & Bear – Limit Of Love LP+MP3 (Nettwerk)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. For their third album, Limit Of Love, Australian quintet Boy & Bear teamed up with producer Ethan Johns (Ryan Adams, Kings Of Leon, Kaiser Chiefs) at Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studio recording live in the studio, straight to tape, with virtually no overdubs. They have been named one of USA Today’s “5 Australian Acts You Need To Know Now.” According to the album’s press release, Limit Of Love is “a dirty, danceable, synth-tinged romp.”
Dee Dee Bridgewater – Dee Dee’s Feathers 2xLP (OKeh/Razor & Tie)
Released in August on CD – now available on vinyl. Dee Dee Bridgewater’s new album, Dee Dee’s Feathers, is her debut album on OKeh Records. Dee Dee’s Feathers is a modern vision of New Orleans and features traditional songs such as “Big Chief,” “St. James Infirmary” and “What a Wonderful World” along with new compositions “Congo Square” and “C’est ici que je t’aime.”

Chaino And His African Percussion Safari – Jungle Echoes [Reissue/1959] LP (Moi J’connais)
“An unbelievable record made of rhythms and shouts, a jungle, a furnace, a disturbing trip in the imaginary world of this unrivaled percussionist, this son of Africa, no matter what, regardless of his legend and of the myth surrounding his real origin. A dangerously addictive and syncopated atomic bomb of a record.”
Ray Charles – Modern Sounds in Country And Western Music [Reissue/1962] LP (Rumble)
1962’s Modern Sounds In Country And Western Music is regarded by many as Ray Charles’s finest studio album. A departure from his earlier work for ABC and Atlantic, this LP features Charles’s reworkings of country standards in his inimitable pop-R&B style. In addition to being a damn fine album, it was also a landmark release as it bridged the racial divide between country music and R&B and marked one of the earliest albums on which a black artist had complete control over his own recordings.
Cicada Rhythm – Cicada Rhythm LP+MP3 (Normaltown)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. A Julliard-trained standup bassist and a train-hopping troubadour walk into a bar…sounds like the lead into a nerdy joke, but it’s not. It is the recipe that yielded the elegant and eponymous Normaltown Records debut from Cicada Rhythm. A diverse and adventurous 12-song collection that slides easily between folk, rock, blues and Americana, each song soars with an authenticity crafted by primary members Andrea Demarcus and David Kirslis. The album was recorded in a diverse range of environments (like 200-year-old church) with acclaimed producer Drew Vandenberg (Deerhunter, of Montreal).
Jenny Conlee with Steve Drizos – French Kayaking Music LP+MP3 (Jealous Butcher)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. The set of instrumental pieces entitled French Kayaking Music was written for and inspired by the film Voyagers Without Trace; a documentary about a French trio who kayaked the Green and Colorado rivers in 1938. When Jenny Conlee (Decemberists/Black Prairie) heard that the film’s director Ian McCluskey was looking for original music with a French flavor, a creative relationship was begun. Conlee was, at this time, delving deep into French accordion music. She was listening to old recordings and learning the style from books of French Musettes.
Cradle Of Filth – Hammer Of The Witches 2xLP (Nuclear Blast)
Limited double picture disc edition featuring two bonus tracks. Eleventh album from the English extreme metal band.
Cut Chemist presents Vox Populi!/Pacific 231 – Funk Off Megamix [2012] LP (A Stable Sound)
A mix of French synth and drum machine based music originally recorded by Vox Populi! and Pacific 231, all culled from cassettes and records and remixed into a seamless dance party.
Decadent – Life LP (Decadent Presents)
Released for the first time, this “lost” second album by these Bay Area weirdos, recorded in Berkeley in 1989, explodes out of the grave, its relentless guitar and pulse-pounding drums blasting out energetic, warped rock and power pop.
Deiphago – Into The Eye Of Satan LP (Hell’s Headbangers)
Released in August on CD – now available on vinyl. “The Filipino black metal trio Deiphago embrace a sound that is chaotic even by black-metal standards.” — Pitchfork
Dragged Into Sunlight/Gnaw Their Tongues – N.V. LP (Prosthetic)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Dragged Into Sunlight’s unholy collaboration of minds with prolific cave dwellers, Gnaw Their Tongues — an aggro, cold and industrial stabbing of aural madness.
The Dream Syndicate – Weathered & Torn (3 ½, The Lost Tapes 85-88) LP (Bang)
This is The Dream Syndicate’s lost album, recorded in Los Angeles between their third and fourth official albums and featuring Chris Cacavas of Green On Red. Weathered & Torn is the missing link between their Americana sound and the Velvets spirit of The Days Of Wine And Roses (1982). Studio recordings with excellent sound quality, remastered for vinyl. Includes inner sleeve liner notes by Steve Wynn and Dennis Duck.
Fear Factory – Genexus 2xLP (Nuclear Blast)
Released in August on CD – now available on vinyl. New album from the cyber metal band. The word “Genexus” is a hybrid is a hybrid of two words; Genesis and Nexus. This word describes the next transition in human evolution as man moves forward to a mechanical state of being. Author/computer scientist/futurist Ray Kurzweil predicts that the singularity will occur around 2045. Genexus is the term for that next evolutionary process. Where humans are machines, machines are human, and the differences are oblivious to the naked eye.
Eric Feremans – The Antwerp Killer [OST/Reissue/1983] LP (Finders Keepers)
One of the rarest vinyl horror soundtracks of all time, 1983’s The Antwerp Killer consists of remarkable homemade electronic experiments created by a wunderkind synth designer for a smart-talking teenage movie maverick. Combining self-propelled punk attitude and uninhibited confidence, the hyper-proactive work of these DIY prodigies pinpoints an important era when youthful ambition and creative technology met.
Robert Francis – Valentine 10” (Aeronaut)
A redux of the classic 1954 vocal debut of Chet Baker.
Freakapuss – New 21st Century Dimension LP (M’Lady’s)
“Tapping into the wild mercurial energy of primordial rhythm and jagged guitar mantras, New 21st Century Dimension is a minimalist masterpiece from back to front. Hot off the heels of their recent split single with Sic Alps (issued on Drag City) and touring the USA this autumn, Freakapuss have the phasers set to ‘stun’ and the switch has been melted off.”
Frodus – And We Washed Our Weapons In The Sea [Reissue/2000] LP (Lovitt)
Frodus – 1995/1998 7” (Lovitt)
Originally released in 2000, And We Washed Our Weapons In The Sea was the final release by Northern Virginia-based “mech-core” trio, Frodus. Recorded in the summer of 1999 with Brian McTernan at Salad Days Studios, Weapons is a depiction of life in the late 20th century at the cusp of a major technological and lifestyle transition. It’s an album that documents the times, displaying within the music the undying human element that remains glowing amongst the constant hum of the world.
Holly Golightly And The Brokeoffs – Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda LP (Transdreamer)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. The 12-song Coulda, Shoulda, Woulda boasts Holly’s unmistakable voice gracing such persuasive tunes as the raw gospel-thrash workout “Heaven Buy And Buy,” the fearsome white-trash tango “Apt. 34,” the bittersweet waltz “Jackhammer,” the heart-tugging holiday-themed “Christmas Is A Lie” and the crunching, anthemic title track.
Greymouth – Greymouth LP (Quemeda)
The white-knuckle fever dreams of guitarist Mark Sangrove and drummer Mark Anderson filter Dead C’s Operation Of The Sonne through zero-attention-span garage dankness. Just as vicious, raw, and sensitive as a Robert Ashley track on a volume of Back From The Grave.
The Gun Club – Mother Berlin LP (Bang)
The Gun Club with leader Jeffrey Lee Pierce and Kid Congo Powers on guitar (The Cramps, Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds, The Butcher Shop) made these recordings in Berlin in 1987, as part of the sessions that would become 1987’s Mother Juno.
Nigel Hall – Ladies & Gentlemen… Nigel Hall LP (Feel Music Group)
“As I wrote in my piece last week about Allen Toussaint, I prepared for a trip to New Orleans earlier this year by delving into the music of the Crescent City. A playlist I created has since ballooned to nearly 1,000 songs. My newest addition is keyboardist Nigel Hall, whose debut, Ladies & Gentlemen… Nigel Hall, [is out now]. And if there’s any justice, I look forward to adding many more songs by him in the future. Hall’s been paying his dues as a sideman and studio musician with an impressive array of names in the jam band world, like Warren Haynes, Roosevelt Collier and Eric Krasno’s bands, Soulive and Lettuce. But don’t let that fool you, because none of the songs are under six minutes. Still, with those credentials, it’s unsurprising to find that he has an exceptional command of jazz-inflected old-school R&B and funk.” – Popdose
Harry Pussy– Harry Pussy [Reissue/1993] LP (Superior Viaduct)
Harry Pussy emerged out of the Florida swamps in 1993. Formed by Adris Hoyos and Bill Orcutt, the duo became legendary for their volatile live shows, which often devolved into violent clashes with audience members. Obliterating the lines between hardcore, noise and free jazz, the unclassifiable Harry Pussy were at once all of these things and none of them. Originally released on Siltbreeze, their self-titled debut album reveals an antagonistic and visceral approach to music: Hoyos’ self-taught, wild-style drums and shrouded screams tangling with Orcutt’s high-tension blues guitar.
Hieroglyphic Being – The Acid Documents LP (Soul Jazz)
Soul Jazz Records launches its new electronic music imprint Sounds Of The Universe division with the first of two new albums by Hieroglyphic Being. The Acid Documents is an album made up of tracks first released last year in a bespoke edition of 100 CD-R copies, made exclusively for the Sounds Of The Universe record store. Born and based in Chicago, Moss’s music embodies two of the cultural foundation blocks of the city’s musical lineage; that of Chicago’s original acid house sound (c. 1986), that of Frankie Knuckles, Phuture, Marshall Jefferson et al, alongside a rigorous experimental sound searching that taps into the cosmic musical lineage of pioneering artist Sun Ra whose Arkestra landed and was based in the city from 1946-61. (Limited copies pressed on colored vinyl.)
Housewives – Work LP+MP3 (Hands In The Dark)
De-tuned and home-made guitars form basic song structures; found objects, machinery, agricultural equipment and construction materials intermingle with field recordings of a remote farm in the French countryside (percussion from the bottom of a silage tank, village church bells, feedback loops of the ambient sound from the surrounding farm buildings).
The Hunches – You’ll Never Get Away With My Heart 7” (Almost Ready)
Two of The Hunches earliest recordings, demos from 2001. Two caveman hymns — songs for misanthropes who’ve realized that they’re really in love with the world.
Ilaiyaraaja – Solla Solla: Maestro Ilaiyaraaja And The Electronic Pop Sound Of Kollywood 1977-1983 [Reissue/2011] LP (Finders Keepers)
The undeniable prince of Kollywood cinema, India’s second largest film industry, Ilaiyaraaja is more than equal to his forward thinking contemporaries in Bollywood and Lollywood in both productivity and experimentation. However, once you have exhausted all possible leads using his various names (and the numerous misspellings) you’re faced with the unenviable task of sifting through a 34-year career spanning more than 900 film scores in Tamil, Hindi, Telugu, Malayalam and Kannada in order to unearth some the heaviest dancefloor friendly electronic pop to ever emerge from Southern India.
Ilitch – Periodikmindtrouble [Reissue/1978] LP (Superior Viaduct)
Ilitch – 10 Suicides [Reissue/1980] LP (Superior Viaduct)
In the mid-1970s, Parisian composer and multi-instrumentalist Thierry Müller began operating primarily under the Ilitch moniker. Juxtaposing dark, electronic soundscapes and solo guitar improvisations, Ilitch created some of the most enduring music of the era. It comes as no surprise that Nurse With Wound included Müller on their famed list of influential avant-garde artists. Originally released on Oxygene Records in 1978, Ilitch’s debut Periodikmindtrouble was a shot across the bow for the French underground scene. Comprised of instrumental four-track recordings made in Müller’s dorm room, the album features gritty tape loops, analog synth swells and angst-ridden guitars. 10 Suicides explores a more art-damaged pop sensibility.
Indian Jewelry – Doing Easy LP (Reverberation Appreciation Society)
Eighth album from the Texas psych/noise duo. On limited edition orange vinyl.
Invisible Astro Healing Rhythm Quartet – 2 LP+MP3 (Trouble In Mind)
The four members of The Invisible Astro Healing Rhythm Quartet formed in 2010 while studying music at Bakersfield College in sunny Bakersfield, CA; a region known (musically) for the twangy, steel-guitar sound popularized by hometown heroes Buck Owens and Merle Haggard. IAHRQ take a decidedly different approach, reaching skyward toward the cosmos and the outer reaches of cosmic, spiritual jazz and ethio-centric long-form jams. A mixture of Ethiopian funk, spiritual jazz and cosmic psychedelia.
Just-Ice – Cold Gettin’ Dumb b/w Cold Gettin’ Dumb II [Reissue/1987] 7” (Get On Down)
“Cold Gettin’ Dumb” remains one of the most exhilarating tracks from an era when hip-hop was inventing itself day by day. Mantronik’s production was so ahead of it’s time. Ten years after it’s release Redman tried to recreate the beat for his single “It’s Like That (My Big Brother)” but the fact that Mantronik had programmed and sequenced “Cold Gettin’ Dumb” live you can hear the difference which makes the original beat unmatched.
Mamadou Kelly – Djamila LP (Clermont Music)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Mamadou Kelly comes from Goundam near Timbuktu, the heart of the Niger River inner delta. Having played alongside it’s masters, Kelly and his group Ban Kai Na bring a new sophistication to the desert blues genre.
Kristín Anna – Howl 2xLP (Women’s Work)
At the age of 18, Kristín Anna Valtýsdóttir left behind a relatively normal teenage life in Reykjavik to live in the remote Icelandic countryside, recording and performing as a founding member of the psychedelic folk band múm. Classically trained as a pianist, she held down a vital, shifting role as singer and instrumentalist, playing the accordion, bass, piano and banjo. After several years she reemerged as Kría Brekkan, a solo artist. Since this rebirth, Kristín Anna has performed internationally in music and visual arts contexts, debuting as Kría Brekkan at the Stone in New York, later touring with Animal Collective and the Icelandic band Stórsveit Nix Noltes, and appearing more recently at MOMA and PS1, ATP England and the Clockwork Gallery. In the Spring of 2013 Kristín Anna made the journey from Iceland to the Mohave Desert in California to record a site-specific piece for Women’s Work Recordings. This mysteriously beguiling work, aptly titled Howl, comes as close to an abstract painting as any music can, or perhaps it is figurative, using the voice as charged brush, giving life to a range of ethereal wonders.
Krozier & The Generator – Tranceformer [Reissue/1981] 2xLP (Finders Keepers)
Imagine a coven of Jodorowsky, Daevid Allen, Mr. Crowley, Rameses, and Arthur Brown, then combine them into a one-man mutant magician and add the finest Australian synth duo since Cybotron. Behold… Geoff Krozier and The Generator. This faithful reproduction of one of Australia’s rarest synth-post-prog vinyl artifacts bequeaths the only recorded fruits of their precious magick, recorded months before Geoff Krozier’s untimely death in 1981. Combining shamanic spoken-word with nodding kosmische instrumentation, this album is fueled by ARP, Roland, and Australian ETI synth technology and leaves fans of synthetic soundtracks, electronic experimentalism, and stubborn synthpop salivating for more (and more there is).
Heather Leigh – I Abused Animal LP (Ideologic Organ)
Renowned as a fearless free improviser, Leigh showcases her songwriting prowess on I Abused Animal, foregrounding her stunning voice and her innovations for the pedal steel guitar. Warmly recorded in a secret location in the English countryside, the album transports the power of her captivating live performances to a studio setting, capturing her tactile playing in full clarity while making devastating use of volume and space. Leigh explores themes of abuse, sexual instinct, vulnerability, memory, shadow, fantasy, cruelty, and projection. I Abused Animal is a personal, idiosyncratic, and deeply psychedelic work, ranging from almost Kousokuya-scale black blues through the kind of ethereal electro-ritual of Solstice-era Coil.
Lil Ugly Mane – Mista Thug Isolation [Reissue/2012] 2xLP (Hundebiss)
Vinyl reissue of Virginia-based rapper and producer Lil Ugly Mane’s 2012 album. “Mista Thug Isolation is far more than datpiff fodder. Lil’ Ugly Mane has fully developed into his ideal Memphis hardcore caricature and exudes pure evil without resorting to shallow shock tactics. But even in the presence of the hellish, the attention to detail — whether in his commitment to country-fried pronunciations or… devilishly dissonant flips — makes it evident that this project wasn’t born from a love of violence or horror, but rather a love of hip-hop.” – Impose
Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas – Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas [Reissue/2005] 3xLP+7” (Eskimo)
The Norse gods of disco have their debut collaboration reissued. “Before Todd Terje there was Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas. Laying the foundations for the playful cosmic disco of Terje’s ‘Inspector Norse’ and the soundtrack to practically every summer beach party ever since, Lindstrøm & Prins Thomas’ self-titled debut LP is getting the full reissue treatment ten years after it was initially released courtesy of Belgium’s Eskimo Recordings.” – The Vinyl Factory
Al Lover – Zodiak Versions 2xLP (Reverberation Appreciation Society)
San Francisco-based producer Al Lover has spent the last several years evolving a unique approach to psychedelic music by way of exploring the common threads within its various genres. His newest effort, Zodiak Versions, sees Al exploring what he views as two musical styles that have defined modern underground music culture, Jamaican dub reggae and experimental ‘70s krautrock. Colored vinyl pressing.
Mantronix – Needle To The Groove B/W Fresh Is The Word [Reissue/1985] 7” (Get On Down)
Kurtis Mantronik and MC Tee formed the group Mantronix In the early ‘80s. Their Sleeping Bag Records debut, Mantronix: The Album shot to commercial success with the wildly futuristic sound that is summed up perfectly with the two songs featured on this 7”. Side A features “Needle To The Groove” which is classic Mantronik production; pounding 808, pulsing bass, lots of scratching all accompanied by MC Tee’s signature voice. Side B features the equally amazing (and the first single from the group) “Fresh Is The Word”.
Maroon 5 – Songs About Jane [Reissue/2002] 2xLP (Brookvale)
Way back in the early days, Maroon 5 rose from the ashes of Los Angeles-based rock outfit Kara’s Flowers and struck gold with their 2002 full-length debut Songs About Jane. This HQ-180gm vinyl reissue is expanded with eight demos and live tracks.
Melanie Martinez – Crybaby LP (Atlantic)
Released in August on CD – now available on vinyl. Melanie Martinez is an unforgettable 20-year-old artist from Long Island, New York — a stunning and provocative singer/songwriter and visual presence. She wants to tell you a story. It’s fictional, but it’s also about her, in a way that’s somewhat exaggerated and darker than reality. The tale traces through Melanie’s debut album Cry Baby, a collection of pop songs that draw inspiration from singer/songwriter folk and hip-hop and follow a character who learns to be more comfortable with who she is. The journey of the character, who Melanie dubbed Cry Baby, mirrors the musician’s own.
Jono McCleery – If Music Presents: Pagodes 2xLP (Ninja Tune)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. New album from the Rotterdam-based singer/songwriter, whose work has been compared to that of Miles Davis, Massive Attack, John Martyn, Fink, and Radiohead wrapped into one exquisitely produced sound.
Merchandise feat. Dum Dum Girls – Red b/w Echo 7”+MP3 (Sub Pop)
“Red Sun” and “Echo” were both written after midnight. “Red Sun” is the story of love, power, and weakness. A three-minute narrative about the mystery of human attraction and its hold on the psyche. “Red Sun,” played by Dee Dee, is half siren and half desert wanderer. She’s the temptress and the God of War in the body of girl who can make all men her victim. “Echo” takes place in the streets of Berlin. In “Echo” our narrator is lost in the madness of regret and lost love. In the warm streets of summer, he’s frozen by his thoughts as if it were winter already.
Milemarker – Conditional Love b/w Recognition 7” (Lovitt)
New single from the reconfigured post-hardcore punk/new-wave electronica band.
Gary Moore – Back On The Streets [Reissue/1978] LP (Secret)

Burnside, Joe Callicott, Furry Lewis and J.W. Warren.
Moving Mountains/Prawn – Moving Mountains/Prawn 12” (Triple Crown)
“Taken side by side, Moving Mountains and Prawn highlight each other’s strengths, and make a compelling argument that they’re best taken together, and on their own. That’s what good splits are supposed to do, and this is a very good split. We’ve already heard Mov Mou’s ‘Deathless’ and Prawn’s ‘Seas,’ and the other two tracks here are just as strong. Both ‘Abby Normal’ and ‘Slopes’ are tighter compositions by comparison, but they still take their time to build and spread out — the elegant yearning of the former, the taut escalation of the latter. It’s the sound of two bands at the top of their game.” – Stereogum
Shawn Mrazek Lives! – Thought He Was Dead [Reissue/2013] LP (Kingfisher Bluez)

Open Letters – 10-23 LP (Kingfisher Bluez)
Reigning suburban kings of the Vancouver emo scene, Open Letters have made an album that feels at once sensitive, self-loathing, and powerful and seems to owe as much to sad bastard indie rock as it does straight-edge punk and hardcore. “Imagine how much it would rule if Tim Kinsella joined Cloud Nothings and they went back to high school”—Aux.tv.
Over The Rhine – Blood Oranges In The Snow [2014] LP (Great Speckled Dog)
Released last year on CD – now available on vinyl. “Over The Rhine’s Christmas songs might be the best soundtrack since A Charlie Brown Christmas for feeling melancholy and lovesick in December. The music practically begs to be mused upon over one hot drink or another.” — Seattle Weekly
Eji Oyewole – Charity Begins At Home LP (BBE)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. A long-lost classic from the golden age of African music, from a figure who is still beginning to get his props internationally, Eji Oyewole. Eji was part of the huge craze for ‘highlife’, a generic term that in fact subsumed many different styles, united in their fusion of traditional west African forms with jazz influences and electric instruments, and in the bands’ working practices as entertainers at the nation’s numerous hotel/nightclubs. As this cracking album, recorded for EMI Nigeria at the tail end of the ’70s and now remastered, reveals, Eji’s version of highlife was even more distinctive than most, eschewing the usual emphasis on guitars for a brasher, horn-laden sound, seemingly influenced as much by American funk as it was jazz, and of course with the heavy percussive undertow central to most African music.

Burnside, Joe Callicott, Furry Lewis and J.W. Warren.
The Present – FSG LP (Group Tightener)
The Present is a NYC based duo consisting of Rusty Santos and Mina Ohashi. The name is derived from their own concept of creating the music they feel is right now. With the new record, FSG, The Present emerge with an inspired collection of dance floor hits drawing from elements of house, juke, and beyond.

Rapper and MMG wunderkind Red Pill brings his self-deprecating best to this LP featuring production from Oddisee, Paul White, and Exile. Double rainbow splattered LP.
Nadia Reid – Listen To The Formation, Look For The Signs LP (Scissor Tail)
“There’s no trace of vengeance in her deep, capable voice, & the surface of her gorgeous song remains steady, as a raga-like drone anchor rolling acoustic guitar & languid cello…The self assurance Reid had once cultivated acts as it’s own safe harbor, turning the event into a meditation rather than a rupture. For a new artist, her confident grace is all the more remarkable.” — Pitchfork
John C. Reilly – Walk Hard: Dewey Cox Story [OST/2007] LP (SRC Vinyl)
Featured on the soundtrack that every Cox hound must own are 14 of his original songs. Included are such tracks as “Walk Hard,” the hit that made him a star, the sexually suggestive “Let’s Duet,” the twangy “Guilty As Charged,” the emotional ballad “A Life Without You (Is No Life At All),” even the touching and poignant protest song, “Let Me Hold You (Little Man).” In addition to the Cox-penned classics, also included is the heart-wrenching lounge disco interpretation of David Bowie’s “Starman.”

Sad Horse – Greatest Hits LP (Mississippi/Eggy)
One of Portland’s finest rock bands, Sad Horse is a two piece with just drums guitars and vocals—but with these few tools they create memorable compositions. For the past seven years, Sad Horse has released tracks on the most underground of cassette and LP labels. Their music is savagely joyful—Geoff Soule and Elizabeth Venable trading screechy enthusiastic vocals, the guitar whirling through songs as concise as possible, the drums clanging and banging. This is the real underground sound of Portland.
Ryuichi Sakamoto and Taylor Deupree – Live 2xLP (ThirtyThree)

Satan’s Satyrs – Don’t Deliver Us LP (Prosthetic)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Arriving from Herndon, Virginia in a psychic blizzard of garage-birthed fury and fuzz-crazed abandon, Satan’s Satyrs stand proud as a malignant manifestation of all that’s debauched and demented in heavy music.
Scientist – Introducing Scientist – The Best Dub Album In The World [Reissue/1980] LP (Superior Viaduct)
Hopeton Brown, better known as Scientist, has been a pioneering figure in the world of dub for nearly 40 years. His early love of electronics proved fruitful when (still a teenager) he was hired at King Tubby’s studio in Kingston. Brown quickly ascended the ranks and became heir to Tubby’s throne, producing imaginative and technically impressive mixes that solidified his forward-looking nickname. Introducing Scientist – The Best Dub Album In The World, his 1980 debut LP, lives up to its boastful title. Recorded with Sly & Robbie at Channel One Studio and mixed at King Tubby’s, the album features hypnotic basslines, reverb-drenched keyboards, and fluid, start-stop rhythms.

SOPHIE – Bipp / Elle [Reissue/2013] 12” (Numbers.)
SOPHIE – Lemonade / Hard [Reissue/2014] 12” (Numbers.)
SOPHIE – L.O.V.E. / Just Like We Never Said Goodbye 12” (Numbers.)
SOPHIE – MSMSMSM / VYZEE 12” (Numbers.)
“Charli XCX collaborator and McDonald’s-approved producer SOPHIE is a hyper-pop producer who toys with the ideas of maximalism and pop’s synthetic nature, and his alignment with PC Music places him squarely in the meta nexus of art and commercialization. The man has worked with Madonna and Red Bull.” — Idolator
Soulfly – Archangel LP (Nuclear Blast)
Limited white colored vinyl LP pressing housed in a gatefold sleeve. Soufly’s tenth full-length release was recorded in the Spring of 2015 with Matt Hyde (Slayer, Children Of Bodom, Deftones). Armed with Max Cavalera’s four-stringed guitars, unmistakable growl and instantly recognizable riffage, the muddy tones and constant rhythmic bounce of Soulfly has retained its gritty edge while pushing the boundaries of what’s possible in metal.
The Soviettes – Rarities [Reissue/2010] LP (Dead Broke)
Vinyl reissue of the Minneapolis bands’ 2010 well-sought after rarities & singles collection. Spence, an American expat living in Germany, worked as a composer for German TV and the NFL; he used his earnings from his commercial soundtrack work to bring one of the very first Moog synthesizers to Germany, and began releasing electronic music that would appeal to ambient and experimental enthusiasts who were searching for cosmic sounds after the rise of bands like Kraftwerk and Tangerine Dream.
Sudor – Enamorado De La Muerte Juvenile LP (Todo Destruido)
Sudor is back with their second full length, ten new tracks inspired by Discharge, RIP and the whole of Scandinavian ‘80s punk.
Sunn O))) – Kannon LP (Southern Lord)
Composed in the after-shadow of Sunn O)))’s most recent successes in immersive collaboration — the group having worked with Scott Walker on Soused, and Ulver on Terrestrials in 2013 and 2014 — and also from the broad and influential wake of their epitomic Monoliths & Dimensions, Kannon emerged both independently as a conceptual entity and with roots in the legacies of those projects, yet was fully realized years later in 2015. The album includes performances by long term allies and collaborators Attila Csihar, Oren Ambarchi, Rex Ritter, and Steve Moore to name a few. At the core, the composition centers around the dynamic and intense guitar and bass interplay of Sunn O)))’s founders: Stephen O’Malley and Greg Anderson. CD version due December 4.
Super Mama Djombo – Super Mama Djombo LP (New Dawn)
Super Mama Djombo is one of West Africa’s greatest roots orchestras and especially for the people of Guiné-Bissau. The band marked a new national identity and reinvented Portuguese Creole as a language of national unity. All songs recorded in Lisbon, 1980 — remastered from the original reels.

Thee Ahs – Names LP (Kingfisher Bluez)
Ten tracks of pure pop bliss from Vancouver’s Thee Ahs. Every song on Names, the band’s fourth full-length, is named after a person, and the songs feel personal and intimate. World class twee-pop for fans of Alvvays and Magnetic Fields.
Third Eye Blind – Dopamine LP+7” (Mega Collider)
Released in June on CD – now available on vinyl with a bonus 7” single that includes a cover of Beyonce’s “Mine” and an acoustic version of “All These Things”. “Say what you will about Third Eye Blind — that Semi-Charmed Life was overplayed; that Stephan Jenkins was too douchey in his episode of Cribs — but there’s no denying the band’s talent, particularly on their near-perfect debut album. Dopamine marks the band’s first full-length offering since 2009’s Ursa Major. A press release suggests the sound is a bit of a throwback for the band: ‘Employing signature guitar riffs and rock arrangements, Dopamine is vintage Third Eye Blind — a body of work whose songwriting details the personal relationships that have come and gone and the rapidly changing world we live in.’” – Exclaim!
Tim The Mute – Why Live? LP (Kingfisher Bluez)
Debut LP for Vancouver lo-fi miserablist showing a slightly more polished side to his happy/sad DIY anti-folk that has been the trademark of his five previous EPs. Songs about life, death, face tattoos, and sparkly vampires.
Tropic Of Cancer – Stop Suffering LP+MP3 (Blackest Ever Black)
Stop Suffering is first music to emerge from Camella Lobo’s Tropic of Cancer project since her 2013 debut album, Restless Idylls. The towering, time stopping title-track is the culmination of Tropic of Cancer’s work to date; rarely does an arrangement so sparse exhibit such grandeur.
Tropic Of Cancer – Archive: The Downward Singles 12”+MP3 (Blackest Ever Black)
The three original songs from Tropic of Cancer’s two 10″s on Downwards, The Dull Age/Victims (2009) and Be Brave (2011) (now both out of print and highly sought-after), collected on one 12″ with new artwork by Silent Editions. An artifact of a time and a place that can never be revisited or relived. The ultimate post-punk, post-techno death-disc.
Robert Turman – Macro [2012] LP (La délirante)
“When Spectrum Spools – an offshoot of the Editions Mego imprint, curated by Emeralds’ John Elliott – reissued Robert Turman’s debut solo release, Flux, in 2012, it opened up a new world for synth-heads who weren’t previously familiar with the American industrial/noise pioneer’s works. Turman co-founded NON with Boyd Rice, and has recently been seen collaborating with the likes of Aaron Dilloway, among others. Seeing an opportunity to further expand our horizons, Brooklyn’s Fabrica Records has taken up the torch, reissuing Turman’s Beyond Painting and putting out this amazing cassette of new work. Recorded in 2012, Macro is a rhythmic exercise in hypnotic, dub-inflected loop mayhem. Textured sheets of ambient tone warp our sensibilities, dissolving our inhibitions to allow Turman’s insidious rhythms to infect both our bodies and our minds.” – Secret Decoder
Ursula 1000 – Voyeur LP (Insect Queen Music)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. After releasing his five previous albums on Thievery Corporation’s Eighteenth Street Lounge imprint, Voyeur is the debut on Ursula’s own Insect Queen Music label. For this new adventure, Ursula is bringing in a real tropical summer feel. “Supersonic Sounds” is a Latin funk bomb that name checks Ursula and is the perfect theme song to lead things off.
Jean-Claude Vannier – L’Enfant Assassin Des Mouches [Reissue/1972] LP (Finders Keepers)
Vinyl reissue of the seminal 1972 album from Serge Gainsbourg’s right-hand man Jean-Claude Vannier. Recorded during the same sessions as Gainsbourg’s highly acclaimed masterpiece Melody Nelson it follows in a similar avant-garde rock-opera vein. L’Enfant Assasin Des Mouches (The Child Fly-Killer) is a supernatural tale written by Gainsbourg depicting the journey of the young child travelling through a nightmarish “Fly Kingdom.” Vannier narrates the story with sparse music concrete sounds coupled with choirs, funky beats, cowbells, wah-wah guitars and ethnic strings. Comparisons could be made with some of Frank Zappa’s Hot Rats material and Alain Goraguer’s creepy Le Planet Sauvge.
Various Artists – Not The Same Old Blues Crap 2 [2001] LP (Fat Possum)
Yellow vinyl edition of this 2001 blues compilation featuring tracks by R.L. Burnside, Junior Kimbrough & Charlie Feathers, T-Model Ford, and more.
Various Artists – Rockabilly Rebels Volume 1 LP (Icehouse)
Various Artists – Rockabilly Rebels Volume 2 LP (Icehouse)
American country music was formed by the encounter between African American forms of music such as blues and gospel and British, Irish and Scottish ballads, jigs and reels. But blues music began to change in the late 1940s into a much faster, more upbeat style of music that was first called jump blues and later rhythm and blues, to distinguish it from its slower, more traditional ancestor. When country music encountered this new rhythm and blues music, the result was a new and uniquely American hybrid known as rockabilly. If country and hillbilly music were the soundtrack of the rural South, rockabilly was the equivalent in the white urban south, a music that seemed to follow the migrations of its creators and fans, with one foot in the country they left behind and one in the city they had moved to. The classic era of rockabilly was fairly brief, encompassing the years from 1954 to 1960, but those years produced quintessential American records and artists that remain American icons, and helped lay the foundation for rock and roll.
All tracks have been handpicked from the Sun Records archive and specially mastered for these compilations. Yellow vinyl.

Laurence Vaynay – La Petite Fenêtre LP (Lion Productions)
Jacqueline Thibault (Laurence Vaynay) often worked for other artists at the legendary Château d’Hérouville studio as arranger, keyboardist, co-composer, and assistant sound engineer. Between sessions she sometimes managed to record her own music. Several years after her two acknowledged masterpieces, Galaxies and Evening Colours, she was able to bring together the tracks for La Petite Fenêtre (The Little Window). As the 1970s ended, trouble with the Château finances meant that again it was impossible for her to present her work to interested record labels.
The Venom – Arringtons, Crombies, Anarchy Bondage LP (Radio Raheem)
Initially taking influence from the first wave of ’77 British punk like the Sex Pistols and Clash, it wasn’t until after an enforced hiatus resulting from a spot of “football violence” that The Venom really came into it’s own. Lumped in with the expanding Oi! scene, they recorded three self-funded sessions—which produced the songs on this record—but their only proper releases were contributions to two compilations.
Verma – Mul.Apin LP+MP3 (Trouble In Mind)
Mul.apin is the fourth album from Chicago psychedelic warriors Verma. Since their formation in 2010, they have been a stalwart presence on the Chicago psych scene.
Dean Wareham & Britta Phillips – Mistress America [OST] LP+MP3 (Milan)
Released in August on CD – now available on vinyl. As Noah Baumbach’s second film of 2015, “Mistress America” shows a director hitting his stride. A screwball comedy about the relationship between two young women in New York, “Mistress America” is stuffed with outlandishly funny moments grounded in the fatuousness of self-absorbed people. The score to the film was composed by the duo of Dean Wareham and Britta Phillips (The Squid And The Whale, Tenure), former members of the dream pop band Luna and longtime collaborators of Noah Baumbach.
Mike Watt + The Secondmen / Chronics – Microwave Up In Flames b/w I Backed Up Into Myself 7” (ORG Music)
Bass legend Mike Watt (Stooges, Minutemen, fIREHOSE) and his Secondmen are back with another split 7” release, this time with Italian punk band Chronics. The two bands cover each other’s songs for this intercontinental collaboration. Red vinyl.
Wet Nurse – Daily Whatever LP (Recess)
“Wet Nurse is an all-woman trio who play clean guitar punk with sugary vocal harmonies. I want to compare them to All Girl Summer Fun Band, but they are more cigarettes ‘n’ beer than tea ‘n’ blankets, defying all twee reference points with rock ’n’ roll spiked riffs, spite in the lyrics and what appears to be a wicked sense of humor—just look at the photos on the back cover, where each band member is staring into space while spilling something.”—Razorcake
White Out w/ Nels Cline – Accidental Sky LP (Northern Spy)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. New York radical innovators White Out and transplanted Los Angeles legend Nels Cline share a long musical history, having played together for over a 15-year period. They play a kind of improvised chamber music. Their tightly cohesive interplay the sonic consequence of years spent developing their highly personal electro-acoustic language. Accidental Sky represents their first official release, and their first attempt at recording in a studio together. The album does not disappoint. Accidental Sky runs the full gamut of artistic expression.
Youth Brigade – Complete First Demo 7” (Dischord)
Complete First Demo collects eight songs that Youth Brigade recorded with Don Zientara and Skip Groff in the summer of 1981 during its first recording session. “I Object” appeared on the 20 Years Of Dischord box set and “Last Word” was included on Flex Your Head. All other material is previously unreleased. This edition of the record has been pressed on orange vinyl.

Legendary Hearts – Music From The Elevator (Not Not Fun)
Miasmic Melbourne new age prog duo Legendary Hearts (aka Andrew Cowie + Kieran Hegarty) first entered the public eye/ear in 2012 but their music has only grown more opaque with age. Music From The Elevator is their 2012 debut, originally released via the Dungeon Taxis label, and captures their chemistry in altered states of sprawl, symbiosis, and swoon. Six expressionistic oozes of infinity gauntlet guitar, slow-motion drum machines, and warping synth, filtering in and out of focus like glares against glass, unfeeling neon aglow in smoke and smog.
Other Houses – Bad Reputation (Aagoo)
Debut full-length LP from the solo moniker of multi-instrumentalist Morgan Enos, known otherwise as the vocalist for doom/shoegaze band Hollow Sunshine. Bad Reputation is winsome, homespun, and crackling with pop energy. The songs, indebted to Enos’ power-pop heroes Big Star, The Byrds and Guided By Voices, keep a sense of heart, concision and personality.
X.Y.R. – Mental Journey To B.C. (Not Not Fun)
Russian Federation ambient fantasist Vladimir Karpov aka X.Y.R. (aka Xram Yedinennogo Razmuwlenuja) usually frames his decaying Soviet analog synthesizer pieces within “illusory worlds” – lost cities of gold (El Dorado), polar oblivion (Arktika), deserted equatorial islands (Robinson Crusoe: Lost Soundtrack) – but his latest collection less conjures a place than a time. The mood of Mental Journey To B.C. is pre-human: obscure landscapes hissing in the heat, shimmering in the dark, uninhabited, unreal. Humid loops of Formanta Mini and smoke-ring keys float over hushed jungle metronomes and moonlit field recordings.
