Kalen & Aslyn – Back Of Our Minds CD/LP (Normaltown)
Written over the course of a decade in which the Athens, GA-based duo was primarily known for their own respective projects, the songs here represent something of a look behind the curtain, a captivating series of musical journal entries that reveal the evolution of a relationship in all its messy, honest, imperfect beauty. Kalen & Aslyn produced their debut album, Back Of Our Minds, themselves, and their subtle touch is a perfect match for the record’s intimate, understated performances, which at times call to mind everything from Van Morrison and Randy Newman to Harry Nilsson and Glen Campbell. The end result is a breezy mix of southern California country and vintage pop that comes wrapped in warm, richly textured arrangements and lush, mesmerizing harmonies.

After years of playing fiddle with the Oklahoma-based country outfit the Turnpike Troubadours, Kyle Nix has emerged with a new role on his debut solo album. You will hear most of the Troubadours roaring as his backing band on the record but this isn’t an uninspired spin-off or half-baked reboot of a good thing. Lightning On The Mountain And Other Short Stories has an identity entirely its own- a western-inspired collection of literary songs, which tell stories from Nix’s own history as well as of the many unique characters he may or may not have encountered throughout his years on the road. Surprise Chef – All New Is Good News CD/LP (Mr. Bongo)
There is something simultaneously both brand-new and retro about All News Is Good News – the debut album from Melbourne’s instrumental soul group Surprise Chef. It sounds like something dreamt up by lo-fi cousins of David Axelrod and Janko Nilovic, with dramatic library music-eqsue cinematic arrangements echoing both light and dark, delving into moments of dissonance and positivity. There is a meticulous education of 1970s soul on display that touches on the legacies of the great composer/producers, yet at the same time this is a truly contemporary record that could have only been made now.

Joshua Ray Walker – Glad You Made It CD/LP (State Fair)
Once the best-kept secret of Dallas’ music scene, Joshua Ray Walker catapulted himself into the international spotlight with his 2019 debut, Wish You Were Here. An album of character-driven songwriting and golden-era Texas twang, Wish You Were Here didn’t just nod to the larger-than-life troubadours who’d inspired Walker’s craft – it brought him into their ranks, too, adding Walker’s name to the shortlist of songwriters worthy of carrying the torches of Guy Clark, John Prine, and Blaze Foley. With Glad You Made It, he lays another brick in the pathway he’s been constructing for years, pointing his way toward a destination that’s unique and utterly compelling.
Barney Wilen & Alain Jean-Marie – Montreal Duets 2xCD/LP (Anagram Music)
Barney Wilen’s preferred piano partner for much of his later career was the Martinique-born Alain Jean-Marie. He appears on both La Note Bleue and Wild Dogs Of The Ruwenzori, but the duo’s Montreal appearance in 1993 is a nice way to study their chemistry at some length. This live recording includes previously unissued tracks from the July 4, 1993 International de Jazz de Montreal, Church of the Cesu.
Wire – 10:20 CD/LP (Pink Flag)
Originally scheduled for RSD 2020 Pink Flag has decided to make 10:20 a regular release. A glimpse into Wire’s working practices, when Wire play live there are different three classes of pieces that are performed: new songs, old songs and new old songs. The latter often involves taking something that existed on a previous release and re-working it, very often evolving a stage highlight from it. There also pieces that have never seen a major release but for some reason never fitted on an album. The best of these ideas were recorded in two sessions – one relating to Red Barked Tree but recorded in 2010 and another relating to Wire’s latest album Mind Hive released earlier this year. The album divides in to two halves – the 2010 side and the 2020 side – hence the title.

Moving fluidly through radically different genres, Caroline collaborated with dozens of artists (Blood Orange, SBTRKT, Charli XCX); sometimes writing, sometimes singing, sometimes directing videos, and sometimes all three. For the first time, the DNA from these seemingly different projects fit together perfectly; the playfulness of Chairlift, the theatricality of Ramona Lisa, futuristic glimmerings of CEP, plus a new mastery of her voice and thick Rolodex of keen collaborators.

And while most movements are fleeting as soon as they arrive, Earl pushed forward, documented his growth and self-discovery on record and cemented himself as one of the foremost culturally relevant MC’s in the game. One who never strayed away too far from his Los Angeles beat-scene roots. [CD edition due July 24.]

Whitechapel –The Valley LP (Metal Blade)
Since their 2007 debut, The Somatic Defilement, Whitechapel’s output has been mired in darkness, but they have never inhabited blacker territory than where we find them on seventh full-length, The Valley (2019). “Lyrically, emotionally, melody wise, there are not many ‘happy’ sounding parts on this record,” states guitarist Alex Wade. “Our last album, Mark Of The Blade (2016) did not sound exactly ‘happy’ either, but the majority of those songs did not have much emotion or vibe behind them, they were just straightforward metal songs. These songs have a darker, more melancholic presentation to them.”
Witchfynde – Cloak And Dagger [Reissue/1983] LP (Cleopatra)
The NWOBHM represented the essence of heavy metal act Witchfynde perfectly – raw, basic power and energy coupled with self-promotion. Paint – Spiritual Vegas (Mexican Summer)
Having first made his mark as a songwriter and guitarist for Los Angeles’ Allah-Lahs, Pedrum Siadatian has etched out a place of his own with his solo work as Paint. This year sees Paint returning with the release of the ambitious Spiritual Vegas. While Ray Davies-smirks and Kevin Ayers-wit abound, Siadatian’s singular touch is unmistakable. An emboldened artist coloring outside the lines, unleashing an opus both idiosyncratic and focused; cohesion through diversity.
