Omar Rodriguez-López – The Cloud Hill Tapes Pts. I, II & III 3xLP (Clouds Hill)
During the 2000s Rodríguez-López released an astonishing variety of solo works. On these recordings the artist used pieces that had accumulated over the years. However, what has so far been missing is a release that brings together the pieces from that era. This wait now has come to an end. These recordings of three sessions dating from the years 2018 and 2019 and taken at the Clouds Hill Studio are now being gathered together as a triple-vinyl LP box set. Part I features eight pieces, and Parts II and III six pieces each, which have been entirely newly arranged, produced by Johann Scheerer, and performed by Omar Rodríguez-López and a range of guest musicians.
ZZ Top – Live From Texas CD/2xLP (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
Recorded on November 1, 2007, at the Nokia Theatre in Grand Prairie, Texas and released the following year, Live From Texas spans ZZ Top’s career to that point from early tracks such as “Waitin’ For The Bus”, “Just Got Paid”, and the classic “La Grange”, through their ’80s blockbusters including “Gimme All Your Lovin'” and “Legs”. “We spend the biggest stretch of every year out on the road, whippin’ wire, poundin’ skin and rockin’ it way up,” says singer/guitarist Billy Gibbons. ZZ Top’s big, brazen blues-rock, combined with a surrealist charisma is on full display here. [Limited colored vinyl pressing also available.]

Deftones – Ohms CD/LP (WB)
Multiplatinum, Grammy Award-winning alternative rockers Deftones are back with their ninth studio album. Ohms is an other-worldly body of work meticulously crafted by the five-piece band. It is a magnificent tour de force and their first album in four years following 2016’s critically acclaimed Gore. [Limited brick and mortar indie store colored vinyl edition also available.]
Diana DeMuth – Misadventure CD/LP (Creaky Gate)
Restless and ready to pave her own way, Diana DeMuth has burst onto the singer-songwriter scene with an arresting perspective about life, love and self-discovery. Growing up on the coast of Massachusetts, DeMuth was immersed in a bohemian upbringing where she moved from place to place with hippie parents. That same restless spirit inhabited DeMuth. After seeing The Avett Brothers from the front row when she was 13, she was enamored with their raw performance and hunger on stage. In that moment, she knew she wanted to be an artist one day. So at 19, after going to college for one week, DeMuth left because she was certain music was her path. For the past five years, she’s focused on just that.
The Hives – Live At Third Man Records CD/LP (Third Man)
In celebration of their string of sold-out dates in the US in 2019, The Hives kicked things off in Nashville and blew up the Blue Room. The band incited full arena-pit pogo energy, busting out career-spanning hits from “Tick Tick Boom” to the unforgettable, fresh-as-ever “Hate To Say I Told You So”. The evening began with the buzz of the band’s neatly-penned neon backdrop: all cool, sleek and electrified. The Hives then breezed into the room in smartly-tailored white dinner jackets, looking like RNR double-O agents, erupting right into a 1-2 punch of “Come On!” and “Walk Idiot Walk”. And for the rest of the set, the band didn’t miss a beat.
IDLES – Ultra Mono CD/LP (Partisan)
Following Brutalism (2017) and Joy As An Act Of Resistance (2018), two releases that garnered global critical acclaim, Idles return with their highly anticipated third album – Ultra Mono. Sonically constructed to capture the feeling of a hip-hop record (including production contribution from Kenny Beats), the album doubles down on the vitriolic sneer and blunt social commentary of their past work. Not far beneath the surface of their self-admitted sloganeering lies a deeply complex and brutally relevant album that chews up clichés and spits them out as high art for the masses. This is momentary acceptance of the self. This is Ultra Mono. [White colored pressing and Deluxe vinyl edition with gatefold packaging and a 28 page debossed Ultra Mono catalogue also available.]
Dianna Krall – This Dream Of You CD/2xLP (Impulse!/Verve)
Diana Krall’s new self-produced studio album This Dream Of You consists of sessions that took place in 2016 and 2017, with personally chosen gems from the American Songbook and more. The record features lead-off single “But Beautiful”, Krall’s last collaboration with friend and longtime creative partner Tommy LiPuma who died in 2017 at 80, as well as tracks like “Almost Like Being In Love” and “That’s All”. Krall heads a quartet line-up on some tracks that includes such long-standing collaborators as John Clayton, Jeff Hamilton and Anthony Wilson, while other tracks feature a trio format spotlighting Christian McBride and Russell Malone.
Paris – Safe Space Invader CD/LP (Guerrilla Funk)
In this era of reckoning for American policing, increases of racism fostered by the most incompetent president in modern times, and a global pandemic that has affected all areas of life as we once knew it, voices of dissent in entertainment have become more relevant than ever.
Enter Paris, arguably one of the most politically outspoken artists in hip-hop history, with his latest album, Safe Space Invader. Entirely self-produced and released on his own Guerrilla Funk Recordings imprint, Safe Space Invader is a brutal commentary on black life in 2020 America, touching on the topics of police brutality, racism, gentrification, economic inequality and cancel culture, among others.
Prince – Sign O’ The Times [Reissue/1987] 2xCD/3xCD/8xCD+DVD/4xLP/13xLP+DVD/2xLP (WB)
Overflowing with musical ideas and topical lyrics that sound just as relevant today as they did when they were initially released, Prince’s iconic double album Sign O’ The Times captures the artist in a period of complete reinvention and innovation. The final 16-track album included just some of the countless songs Prince recorded in the prolific period of 1985-1987, which saw the dissolution of his band The Revolution, the construction of his innovative recording complex, Paisley Park, and the creation (and ultimate abandonment) of the albums Dream Factory, Camille, and Crystal Ball. [Available in a wide variety of configurations: Standard, Expanded, Deluxe and Super Deluxe. The Deluxe edition adds 13 singles mixes and edits. The Super Deluxe edition contains 92 audio tracks, of which 63 are previously unreleased, including 45 studio tracks from Prince’s legendary Vault. A limited edition peach colored double-vinyl pressing is also available.]
Public Enemy – What You Gonna Do When The Grid Goes Down? CD/LP (Def Jam)
Legendary hip-hop group Public Enemy returns to Def Jam – a cultural institution that they helped build – for their first release for the label in over two decades with What You Gonna Do When the Grid Goes Down? The loaded 17-track affair boasts a powerful lineup of guests including Nas, YG, Rapsody, DJ Premier, Black Thought, Questlove, Cypress Hill, Run-DMC, Ice-T, PMD, George Clinton, Daddy-O, Jahi, The Impossebulls, Mark Jenkins, S1Ws Pop Diesel, James Bomb and Mike D and Ad-Rock of Beastie Boys. The album is led by the single “Fight The Power: Remix 2020”, re-conceptualized by Public Enemy with Nas, Rapsody, Black Thought, YG, Jahi and Questlove for the 2020 BET Awards in June 2020, and officially released as a single along with the album announcement. It also includes Public Enemy’s recent single, “State Of The Union (STFU)”, produced by DJ Premier. The track holds nothing back as it calls out Donald Trump and his destructive reign.
The Rolling Stones – Steel Wheels Live: Atlantic City, New Jersey 2xCD+DVD/3xCD+DVD+Blu-ray/4xLP (Eagle Rock Entertainment)
Having not hit the road for most of the ’80s, The Steel Wheels Tour was an astounding return for the Rolling Stones, not least as it was the longest they had by that point undertaken. It was also to be their last with longtime bassist Bill Wyman. Steel Wheels Live: Atlantic City, New Jersey was recorded towards the end of the band’s 60-date run through the stadiums of North America, in the second half of 1989. The previously unreleased live release features special guest appearances from Axl Rose, Izzy Stradlin, Eric Clapton and John Lee Hooker and is presented in a variety of multi-format configurations, including a deluxe four-LP colored vinyl set.
Sad13 – Haunted Painting CD/LP (Wax Nine)
Drawing inspiration from 1980s British pop-rock à la Tracy Ullman and Joan Armatrading, as well as the contemporary digital gloss of post-PC Music electronica, Sadie Dupuis aka Sad13 calls Haunted Painting “decidedly non-minimal,” mixing technicolor synth-pop and math-rock dynamism. Accompanied throughout by drummer Zoë Brecher – and, on two songs, by an eight-piece orchestra – Dupuis handles all other instrumentation herself, expanding her palette of guitar, bass, and synth to include organ, lap steel, marimba, glockenspiel, sitar, autoharp, Theremin, “toys, trash, and ephemera.” She worked exclusively with women engineers; among those credited are mixer Sarah Tudzin (Weyes Blood, Illuminati Hotties), tracking engineers Erin Tonkon (David Bowie, Esperanza Spalding) and Maryam Qudus (Thao & The Get Down Stay Down, mxmtoon), and Dupuis’ long term collaborator, mastering legend Emily Lazar (Beck, Dolly Parton). The process allowed for a diversity of timbres, as well as guest vocal contributions from Helado Negro’s Roberto Lange, Deerhoof’s Satomi Matsuzaki, Merrill Garbus of tUnE-yArDs, and Pile’s Rick Maguire. [Limited pink colored vinyl pressing also available.]
Sufjan Stevens – The Ascension CD/LP (Asthmatic Kitty)
Enigmatic singer-songwriter Sufjan Stevens makes his long-awaited follow-up to 2015’s Carrie & Lowell with the 15-track double LP, The Ascension. The years-in-the-making collection’s first single comes in the form of the sprawling closing track “America”. Sufjan says the foundations of The Ascension are “a call for personal transformation and a refusal to play along with the systems around us.” He adds, “my objective for this album was simple: Interrogate the world around you. Question anything that doesn’t hold water. Exterminate all bullshit. Be part of the solution or get out of the way. Keep it real. Keep it true. Keep it simple. Keep it moving.” The result is The Ascension, a “lush, editorial pop album,” as Sufjan describes it, which finds us all at a “terrifying crossroad.” [Limited brick and mortar indie store colored vinyl edition also available.]

Sylvan Esso – Free Love CD/LP (Loma Vista)
Free Love thrives on collaborative frisson – two people pushing one another into new territories with the shared assurance of knowing they’re in good company, a sort of trust fall in reverse. Yes, these 10 songs are some of electro-pop duo Sylvan Esso’s most direct. And most delicate. And most intricate. And most urgent. Free Love carries the confidence of two people delighted to be all those things, together, at once. Tantalizing opener “What If” is a brief, minimal and enticing track which finds Amelia Meath singing over spacious synth-bleeps, “Oh life, dying out/ And the oceans turn to clouds.” [Limited brick and mortar indie store colored vinyl edition also available.]
Tricky – Fall To Pieces CD/LP (!K7)
“Tricky has always worn his bruised heart on his sleeve. His brilliantly desolate debut album, Maxinquaye, was inspired by his mother, who died when he was four years old, and a song like ‘Strugglin’’ laid bare in excruciating detail his experiences of pain, darkness, and toil. Fall To Pieces, which contains some of the most darkly moving music that Tricky has produced since that debut album, was produced in the shadow of tragedy. Tricky’s daughter Mazy died in 2019 as he was beginning work on a new record. Here, on his 14th studio album, he translates that unimaginable loss into moments of nauseatingly raw emotion. However personal the burden of Tricky’s grief, his collaborators have played a significant role in shaping the sound and feel of the album. Marta Złakowska, who Tricky discovered in a Krakow bar after a singer dropped out of his Polish tour, has the perfect voice for a Tricky vocal foil, her spectral tones the wisp of smoke to his cigarette-end mutter, while Marie-Claire Schlameus’s cello and Kristof Hahn’s slide guitar creep around the arrangements with the finesse of art thieves.” – Pitchfork
The War And Treaty – Hearts Town CD/LP (Rounder)
Critically acclaimed duo, The War And Treaty (featuring Michael and Tanya Trotter), make a triumphant return with their sophomore album, Hearts Town. The 12 tracks reflect their strongest material to date with military veteran Michael’s production/songwriting prowess front and center. Hearts Town has a dynamic sound, joyfully blending Southern soul with elements of gospel, country, rock ‘n’ roll and blues. Few acts today can surpass the extraordinary passion and boundless energy of this Nashville-based husband/wife team. With its spellbinding intensity, “Jealousy” unfolds in a masterfully orchestrated sound that merges soaring harmonies and kinetic beats, symphonic strings and scorching guitar work. And on “Hustlin’,” cascading piano tones and gently lilting rhythms build a beautiful contrast to the song’s moody meditation on perseverance and grit.

Sophomore album from one of Australia’s fastest rising metalcore acts. [Limited edition clear vinyl pressing also available.]
The Archaeas – The Archaeas CD/LP (Goner)
Beginning as a one witch band, Archaeas now perform as a perfectly-balanced rock trio with frightening power, reflecting punk rock ‘n’ roll from the last fifty years-AC/DC, Johnny Thunders’
Heartbreakers and The Dead Boys through The Reatards and Carbonas, even early Ty Segall-but The Archaeas are young enough to soak up sounds, attitudes, riffs and turnarounds from other bands and songs and still push them into their own Battle Royale.
Rich Aucoin – United States CD (Haven Sounds)
Rich Aucoin wrote his new concept album, United States, while observing America from the ground level, cycling across it for Mental Health America (as well as the Canadian Mental Health Association). While taking this Robert Frank approach, Aucoin composed a song for each of the 12 states he pedalled through. The record is as much about the current socio-political climate of America as it is about states of consciousness; as much fueled by the burgeoning American protest movement or Hedges’ social commentary as it is fueled by McKenna/Pollan world of psychedelics and meditation apps. [Vinyl edition due October 30.]
Ayreon – Transitus CD/LP (Music Theories)
From the mastermind of Dutch multi-instrumentalist Arjen Lucassen, Transitus is inspired by supernatural movies such as The Others, The Changeling and Ghost along with the music of soundtrack composers John Carpenter (Halloween), Ennio Morricone (Once Upon A Time In The West) and Jerry Goldsmith (Omen). [Limited edition red colored vinyl pressing also available.]
The Band Of Heathens – Stranger CD/LP (BOH)
Austin, TX’s The Band of Heathens return with Stranger, their most inventive release to date. The follow up to 2017’s critically acclaimed Duende, the band recorded this new effort in Portland, OR with producer Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, My Morning Jacket, Modest Mouse). The result is something different – a more airy, intimate atmosphere, with added emphasis on songcraft and intricate arrangements set in a spacious sonic landscape that reinvents the band’s sound. These are songs stripped of pretense, but teeming with the emotion borne of personal experience, as has been The Band Of Heathens’ method from the very start. Stranger moves off into a new place, but still echoes the group’s artful songwriting and multi-layered narrative observations.
Blitzen Trapper – Holy Smokes Future Jokes CD/LP+MP3 (Yep Roc)
Singer-songwriters have been tackling existential questions about life and death since time immemorial…or at least the 1960s. But when it came to Blitzen Trapper’s newest album, Holy Smokes Future Jokes, front man Eric Earley looked beyond mere existence – or even the end of it – to contend with grander cosmic explorations: namely, the intermediate period between a person’s separate lives on earth, “and what it means to escape the cycle of birth and rebirth,” he explains. Inspired by the experimental tome, Lincoln In The Bardo and The Tibetan Book Of The Dead, Earley’s lyrics take the listener on a wild and dramatic journey through rivers of waist-high water in the aftermath of a tragic car wreck and the hazy morning before a murderous moment, and from getting blitzed to the point of extinction inside a masonic temple to a stop for chips and dip before the apocalypse.
The Buckleys – Daydream CD/LP (Petrol)
The Buckleys are a chart-topping teenage sibling trio from Byron Bay, Australia with roots in country music and an energetic live show which blends country, rock ‘n’ roll, soul and pop. Generations is a meditation on Butler’s place in society and history. According to Butler, “A big chunk of this record is asking: What’s my place in American history? What’s my place in America’s present? Both in general…but, also extremely particularly: me as Will Butler, rich person, white person, Mormon, Yankee, parent, musician of some sort, I guess.”
A Certain Ratio – ACR Loco CD (Mute)

An addendum to Makaya McCraven’s critically-acclaimed 2018 release Universal Beings, which The New York Times said “affirms the drummer and beatsmith’s position as a major figure in creative music,” Universal Beings E&F Sides presents fourteen new pieces of organic beat music cut from the original sessions, prepared and produced by Makaya as a soundtrack to the Universal Beings documentary film.
Midlife – Automatic CD/LP (Heavenly)
When Mildlife’s debut album Phase was released in 2018, it didn’t so much explode on to the scene as ooze. Their mellifluous mix of jazz, krautrock and, perhaps more pertinently, demon grooves, was the word of mouth sensation of that year among open-minded DJs and diggers searching for the perfect beat. By the end of 2018 they’d been nominees for Best Album at the Worldwide FM Awards and won Best Electronic Act at The Age Music Victoria Awards back home in Melbourne. The follow-up, Automatic, is more disciplined, directional and arguably more danceable. [Limited edition colored vinyl pressing also available.]
Thurston Moore – By The Fire CD/2xLP (Daydream Library)
By The Fire is Thurston Moore’s seventh solo album, and features Deb Googe (My Bloody Valentine) on bass and backing vocals, Jon Leidecker aka “Wobbly” (of Negativland) on electronics, James Sedwards on guitar, and Sonic Youth’s Steve Shelley, as well as Jem Doulton, alternating on drums. “Hashish”, the first single from the album, is described by Moore as “an ode to the narcotic of love in our shared responsibility to each other during isolation.” [Limited colored vinyl pressing also available.]
Bob Mould – Blue Hearts CD/LP+MP3 (Merge)
In the winter of 2019, Bob Mould bucked the era’s despair with his most melodic, upbeat album in ages, Sunshine Rock. Cut to spring of 2020, and he has this to say: “We’re really in deep shit now.” That sentiment informs the new full-length album, Blue Hearts, the raging-but-catchy yin to Sunshine Rock‘s yang. Recorded at the famed Electrical Audio in Chicago with Beau Sorenson engineering and Mould producing, Blue Hearts nods to Mould’s past while remaining firmly planted in the issues of the day.
The Ocean – Phanerozoic II: Mesozoic | Cenozoic CD (Metal Blade)
Divided into two sections – Mesozoic and Cenozoic – Phanerozoic II once again showcases the detail and depth that have become two of The Ocean’s most enduring trademarks. While ostensibly delving into the extraordinary realities of the Earth’s shifting temporal tides, guitarist/composer Robin Staps and his comrades have long drawn hazy parallels between their chosen subjects and the emotional experiences that their music strives to convey. Phanerozoic II is essentially an album about time, with some very poignant and pointed allusions to the modern world woven into the new music’s spiritual fabric. [Vinyl edition due October 2.]
Kellee Patterson – Maiden Voyage [Reissue/1973] CD/LP (Real Gone Music)
As purportedly the first black-owned jazz imprint since the ’20s, the Black Jazz label had its roots in the Black Power movement of the late ’60s and early ’70s. But not every album on the label had a social message. Kellee Patterson’s Maiden Voyage was simply an extremely tasteful, mellow jazz vocal album, recorded with the top-notch sidemen that characterized Black Jazz sessions. The album is highlighted by a beautiful vocal performance by Patterson of Herbie Hancock’s title tune, backed with such premium players as long-time George Duke sideman John Heard on acoustic bass and Ray Charles touring band member George Harper on flute.
The Pretty Things – Bare As Bone, Bright As Blood CD/LP (Madfish UK)
First-ever, all-acoustic Pretty Things album and last with founding member Phil May. [Limited edition colored vinyl pressing also available.
The Puppini Sisters – Dance, Dance, Dance CD/LP (Millionaire)
With five albums under their waist-cinching belts, The Puppini Sisters are hailed as the world’s leading close-harmony group, and count HRH Prince Charles, The Manhattan Transfer and Michael Bublé amongst their fans. It’s extraordinary how many others have followed their trailblazing lead, whether it’s their gorgeous close harmony singing style, the swing-style re-workings of modern pop songs, or their impeccable retro-futuristic fashion sense. But none come close to these true originals.
Reckless Kelly – American Jackpot/American Girls 2xCD (No Big Deal)
For nearly 25 years, Reckless Kelly has graced the musical landscape with a high-powered form of Americana, equally rooted in raw passion, refined musicianship, and gritty authenticity. With the dual release of two new albums – American Jackpot and American Girls – the Idaho-bred band presents a beautifully detailed portrait of their beloved country, turning their nuanced songwriting to its many glories and tragedies. While one batch of songs centers on slice-of-life storytelling and the other explores the complexities of human connection, the collective body of work unfolds with a profound and often eye-opening attention to the subtleties of American life. [Vinyl edition due October 16.]
Lou Reed – New York [Reissue/1989] 3xCD+2xLP+DVD (Rhino)
Lou Reed struck a chord with critics and fans alike more than 30 years ago with New York, his Sire Records debut and 15th solo studio album. Its raw sound and evocative lyrics would go on to earn the legendary singer-songwriter-poet a gold record, a Grammy nomination, and a No. 1 hit on the Modern Rock charts with “Dirty Blvd”. This expansive reissue includes a newly remastered version of the original 1989 album on CD and – for the first time – on double 180gm audiophile vinyl. The set also includes 26 unreleased studio and live recordings of album tracks from the Lou Reed Archive, as well as the DVD-debut of The New York Album, a long-out-of-print concert video recorded during the New York tour. The set comes packaged in a 12” x 12” hardcover book that includes new liner notes written by music journalist David Fricke and essays from archivist Don Fleming.
Rituals Of Mine – Hype Nostalgia CD/LP+MP3 (Carpark)
Hype Nostalgia reckons with the emotional rollercoaster Terra Lopez has been riding the past few years, and reimagines it. In 2015, Lopez lost her father to suicide and six months later her best friend passed away in a water accident. “Those two events within that six month-period, forever changed me, and I’m only now starting to feel like I’ve processed it after all these years,” Lopez says. Art had always been her outlet, but it was no longer a coping mechanism that worked. Trauma had taken away her voice, leaving Lopez unable to sing for a year. It wasn’t until 2018 when she decided to go to therapy and began taking medication for the first time that she could process the trauma she had experienced, not only in the recent years, but intergenerational trauma she discovered in eye movement desensitization and reprocessing (EMDR). Sure, there are heavy elements to the record: dark synths, future R&B undertones, propulsive bass and moody lyrics, but the softness of Lopez’s vocals elicits a quiet confidence.
Diana Ross & The Supremes – Sing And Perform “Funny Girl”: The Ultimate Edition [Reissue/1968] CD (Real Gone Music)
Greatly building upon the digital-only Expanded Edition issued in 2015, The Ultimate Edition boasts the original US stereo mix, the rare UK mono mix (with an extended version of Diana Ross’s tour de force “People”, The Supreme Mixes reinstating Mary Wilson and Cindy Birdsong’s original vocals not heard in 1968, and bonus tracks including alternate versions of “Cornet Man”, “His Love Makes Me Beautiful”, and “Sadie, Sadie” as well as live performances of “I’m The Greatest Star” and the Fanny Brice standard “My Man”.
Raymond Scott Big Band – Hemidemisemiquaver: Buried Treasures Of The Raymond Scott Big Band CD (Real Gone Music)
Raymond Scott is best known as the composer of famous tunes that pop up throughout Warner Bros cartoons. In the late ’30, his celebrated Raymond Scott Quintette was a huge commercial success, a singular ensemble playing a unique and unmistakable style of jazz, full of whimsy and bravura. By the late ’40, he had become an electronic music pioneer, both as an instrument inventor and composer. His music is everywhere these days, not just cartoons. Hemidemisemiquaver: Buried Treasures Of The Raymond Scott Big Band collects 26 exciting cuts, mostly unreleased radio broadcasts recorded by Scott himself and restored by Gavin Ross at Steady Studio in Burbank, CA.
Shy Boys – Talk Loud CD/LP+MP3 (Polyvinyl)

The String Theory – The Los Angeles Suite CD/LP (Clouds Hill)
Maverick orchestra The String Theory may be known primarily for their long-term collaboration with the gentle Swedish troubadour José González, yet has over time grown into a massive artist collective in their own right, curiously exploring the outskirts of contemporary neoclassical and electronic music.

Surfer Blood – Carefree Theatre CD/LP (Kanine)
Carefree Theatre is Surfer Blood’s fifth studio album and marks a return to their first label Kanine Records. Written and recorded in South Florida, it’s the first record the band has released since John Paul Pitts, the singer and main songwriter moved back to the state. It’s an album not as much looking back as coming full-circle. The Carefree Theatre in West Palm Beach, FL was the only venue in town for most of the band’s childhood; it’s where kids would go for everything from touring punk bands to community theater productions. It was the kind of experience that would expose a 21-year-old songwriter to a world outside of Florida, and inspire him to start a band and tour the country. [Limited edition blue colored vinyl pressing also available.]
Svalbard – When I Die, I Will Get Better CD/LP (Translation Loss)
Drawing musical influence from crust, post-rock and hardcore; and lyrical influence from early 20th century existentialism, Svalbard alternate between moments of aggression and moments of frailty with an all-encompassing sense of desperate hope.

Torch – Reignited CD/LP (Metalville)
New album from the Swedish metal legends. Reignited combines Torch’s old school metal feeling with a powerful, contemporary sound.
UxB – Westworld Crisis CD (Demons Run Amok)
UxB is a new band formed by the members and driving force behind the influential punk band US Bombs. After parting ways with original vocalist over conflicting political views in 2015, Kerry Martinez (Shattered Faith, Bad Luck Charms) Wade Walston (Suburbia, DI, Agent Orange) Chip Hanna (One Man Army, Weirdos, TSOL) teamed up with legendary frontman and show stealing performer Jesse Wagner (The Aggrolites).

WorldService Project – Hiding In Plain Sight CD/LP (RareNoise)
Over the course of its previous four albums, UK punk-jazz outfit WorldService Project carried its keen-edged, window-rattling irreverence across the globe, casting an eviscerating glance inward while spreading its message of chaotic compassion to the scattered remnants of the former British Empire and beyond. With the release of the gleefully anarchic Hiding In Plain Sight, keyboardist-vocalist Dave Morecroft takes on his native land from an outsider’s perspective for the first time, having decamped for Rome in his own personal Brexit.

Arlo McKinley – Die Midwestern LP (Oh Boy)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Coming out of the eclectic Cincinnati music scene that has produced everyone from The National and Walk The Moon to Bootsy Collins, Arlo McKinley has washed his songs in the blood of street soul, country, punk and gospel – and tattooed them onto the underground. Filled with a weight, honesty and gritty-hope from rustbelt city life, McKinley rolled downriver to Memphis to Sun Studio where Grammy Award-winning producer Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, Margo Price, John Prine) gathered a working man’s all-star band to record Die Midwestern. McKinley’s 10 original songs bleed truth and emotion from a heart scarred by wild nights and redeemed by Sunday morning confessions. “She’s Always Around”, “Suicidal Saturday Night”, “Bag Of Pills”, and “Ghost” – a song he wrote in a funeral home parking lot after carrying the coffin of his best friend – are all songs carved out in the key of life. Filled with a hardscrabble spirit akin to the late, great Johnny Paycheck, McKinley is making a name for himself that blue-collar way – humbly stacking piles of soulful acoustic songs that hurt so good.

The music moved millions worldwide and contributed to Richter’s stellar rise on the contemporary scene. Following the film’s premiere at Cannes in 2008, critics hailed the importance of Richter’s unforgettable score and also recognized its success as a standalone album, something rarely achieved by a movie soundtrack.
