Social Media Program Titles Released This Week:
Clipping. – Wriggle (Expanded) CD/LP+MP3 (Sub Pop)
The original, digital-only Wriggle was six tracks that weren’t finished in time to make it onto the group’s 2014 Sub Pop debut, CLPPNG. The EP’s title track, “Wriggle”, was built around a sample of the influential power-electronics song “Wriggle Like A F**king Eel” by Whitehouse, transforming William Bennett’s torturous imperative into a instructional dance-floor banger. The 2021 edition features new artwork, guests, and previously unreleased remixes. Included are the original versions of the title track, “Shooter”, “Hot F**k No Love” (feat. Cakes Da Killa & Maxi Wild), “Our Time” (feat. Nailah Middleton), along with “Back Up 2021” feat. SB The Moor and a new verse from industrial-rap experimentalist Debby Friday. Wriggle also features remixes of the title track from drum ‘n’ bass/breakbeat act Homemade Weapons and Classicworks label co-founder Cardopusher, a rework of “Back Up” by Fade To Mind producer Dave Quam (formerly Massacooramaan), and Chicago footwork producer Jana Rush delivers both the “Hot F**k No Love (Naughty Bitch Remix)” for the vinyl version, and “Shooter (Face Rearranged Remix)” for the digital release.
Oliver Wood – Always Smilin’ CD/LP (Honey Jar)
Oliver Wood is a mainstay of modern-day American roots music. The frontman of the Wood Brothers since 2004, he’s spent the 21st century blurring the boundaries between folk, gospel, country-soul, and Americana, earning an international audience and a Grammy Award-nomination along the way. Always Smilin’, his debut as a solo artist, continues that tradition while also shining new light on Oliver’s sharp songwriting, savvy guitar chops, and a voice that evokes the swagger of a Saturday evening picking party one moment and the solemnity of a Sunday morning gospel service the next. It is an album of bridges, mixing a wide range of collaborations with a uniquely personal touch. Guests include bandmates from Oliver’s musical past and present, from mentor and co-writer Chris Long (who performed alongside Oliver in King Johnson, the roots-rock band that dominated Atlanta’s music scene around the turn of the millennium) to percussionist Jano Rix (Oliver’s partner in The Wood Brothers). Blues heroine Susan Tedeschi, Hiss Golden Messenger’s Phil Cook, Medeski Martin & Wood’s John Medeski, Tedeschi Trucks Band’s Tyler Greenwell, Nashville staple Phil Madeira, and singer/songwriter Carsie Blanton also make appearances, with Rebecca Wood – Oliver’s wife – handling the album’s handmade linocut cover art. [An indie store exclusive clear vinyl pressing is available.]
August Marketing Program/ Banner/ Listening Station Titles Promoted This Week:
The Flatlanders – Treasure Of Love CD/2xLP (Rack’Em)
Almost 50 years after the sessions that would make them an “accidental Texas supergroup” (Rolling Stone), The Flatlanders have returned with Treasure Of Love, their first new album in more than a decade. Completed during COVID-19 lockdowns with the help of longtime friend and collaborator Lloyd Maines, the record finds the iconic trio of Joe Ely, Jimmie Dale Gilmore, and Butch Hancock in classic form, serving up a rollicking collection of twang-fueled, harmony-laden performances full of wry humor and raw heartbreak. While a few songs here are never-before-heard originals, the vast majority of the tracklist consists of tunes the band picked up during their half-century together, some stretching as far back as the group’s earliest performances in the honkytonks around Lubbock, TX, where you might have spotted Willie Nelson or Townes Van Zandt in the audience.
Half Waif – Mythopoetics CD/LP+MP3 (Epitaph)
Half Waif, the project of Nandi Rose, returns with the new album, Mythopoetics. It’s a record about processing past traumas in the quest for a new, sun dappled pathway, and the transformation that takes place as we take each tentative step. The artwork, shot by Ali Cherkis, sees Rose screaming in bright colors on the front, and naked, with a stoic expression on the back, representing the spectrum of emotions explored throughout each track. Change, evolution and joy take real courage, and it’s in the catharsis of telling your story that the calm, confident aftermath can finally reach the surface. Here, Half Waif is shunning the shadowed mass of generational trauma and the patterns passed down to her. Instead, she plants a seed, urging the orange blossom to sprout through the cracks in the concrete. To bring together the world of Mythopoetics, Rose once again collaborated with multi-instrumentalist, film composer and producer Zubin Hensler. [An indie store exclusive vinyl pressing is available.]
The Rolling Stones – A Bigger Bang-Live On Copacabana Beach 2xCD+DVD/2xCD+Blu-ray/2xCD+2xDVD/3xLP (Mercury Studios)
Welcome to Rio De Janeiro and the Rolling Stones’ legendary show from Copacabana Beach. In front of 1.5 million people, one of the biggest free concerts in history, the Stones’ performance on February 18, 2006 was an historic event; a critical moment in rock ‘n’ roll history. As Mick Jagger, Keith Richards, Ronnie Wood, and Charlie Watts fire on all pistons from one track to the next, the crowd continues to meet their energy waving Brazilian and British flags while rocking out in the tropical evening sunset. With incredible staging and graphics, this fully restored and remastered concert from their A Bigger Bang world tour now includes four previously unreleased tracks; “Tumbling Dice”, “Oh No, Not You Again”, “This Place Is Empty” and “Sympathy For The Devil”. [A limited-edition multi-color vinyl pressing and deluxe four-disc deluxe edition hardback book edition – featuring a never-before-released show from Salt Lake City – are also available.]
The Wallflowers – Exit Wounds CD/LP (New West)
Rock ‘n’ roll is often hard to define, or even to find, in these fractured musical times. But to paraphrase an old saying, you know it when you hear it. And you always hear it with The Wallflowers. For the past 30 years, the Jakob Dylan-led act has stood as one of rock’s most dynamic and purposeful bands – a unit dedicated to and continually honing a sound that meshes timeless songwriting and storytelling with a hard-hitting and decidedly modern musical attack. That signature style has been present through the decades, baked into the grooves of smash hits like 1996’s Bringing Down The Horse as well as more recent and exploratory fare like 2012’s Glad All Over. But while it’s been nine long years since we’ve heard from the group with whom he first made his mark, the Wallflowers are silent no more. [An indie store exclusive deluxe color vinyl pressing and a super deluxe edition are available.]

Largely full-band performances recorded live at Ray Kennedy’s Room & Board Studio in Nashville, TN, Lucinda has poured her heart and soul into each of these episodes. Spearheaded by Valor Kand with long-time members Gitane Demone and David Glass, Atrocities marked a lyrical shift to a more direct attack on organized religion rather than a subversive approach. This early period of the band is widely considered its finest era, and Atrocities is unquestionably among their very best work. [A limited-edition yellow color vinyl pressing is also available.]
Clipping. – Wriggle (Expanded) CD/LP+MP3 (Sub Pop)
The original, digital-only Wriggle was six tracks that weren’t finished in time to make it onto the group’s 2014 Sub Pop debut, CLPPNG. Peter Hammill – In Translation CD (Fie)
For the first time ever, Peter has recorded a collection of covers. The songs come from a variety of musical worlds: classical, American Songbook, Italian pop and tango. In all but three cases, Peter has translated the songs from Italian, French and German. As strange a project as this might seem, there’s an overall sense of cohesiveness to it and it’s absolutely of this time. Two songs have lyrics by Oscar Hammerstein; the music for one is by Jerome Kern, the other by Richard Rodgers. Leiber and Stoller provided lyrics for I who have nothing’, originally an Italian tune. The soundtrack includes songs from Led Zeppelin, The Who, Elton John, Simon & Garfunkel, The Beach Boys, Todd Rundgren, Rod Stewart, The Seeds, The Allman Brothers Band, Lynyrd Skynyrd, David Bowie, Clarence Carter, Cat Stevens, Thunderclap Newman, original score track by Nancy Wilson and “Fever Dog” by the film’s fictional band Stillwater. Bonifrate – Corisco LP (Overseas Artists)
Brazilian musician Pedro Franke aka Bonifrate wrote this suite of psych-pop songs, as he puts it, trying to read the world around us, feeling lost or found in it. Mostly lost. The Fall – Live At The ATP Festival – 28 April 2002 2xLP (Let Them Eat Vinyl)
