Anxious – Little Green House CD/LP (Run For Cover)
The Connecticut band unpacks struggles, joys, and hard-earned realizations in a way that makes them feel wise beyond their years. Boris – W CD/LP/Cassette (Sacred Bones)
In an effort to sublimate the negative energy surrounding everyone in 2020, legendary Japanese post-rock band Boris focused all of their energy creatively and turned out the most extreme album of their long and widely celebrated career, NO. The band self-released the album, desiring to get it out as quickly as possible but intentionally called the final track on the album “Interlude” with anticipation of a follow-up. The follow-up comes with W the band’s debut album for their new label Sacred Bones Records. The record opens with the same melody as “Interlude” in a piece titled “I want to go to the side where you can touch…” and in contrast to the extreme sounds found on NO, this new album whispers into the listener’s ear with a trembling hazy sound meant to awaken sensation. [A limited-edition sea blue color vinyl pressing is available.]

As the band matured through the years, the riffs have gradually gotten heavier, the themes darker, and the doom more sinister.
Jana Horn – Optimism CD/LP (No Quarter)
Optimism is the debut album from Jana Horn of Austin, Texas. Originally self-released in a small vinyl edition, now widely available. Horn says the LP, “seemed to come about indirectly, almost in passing, a feeling of being in-between things. I was really mobile at that time, living wherever…I had just discovered, late, Raymond Carver Broadcast, Sybil Baier, Annette Peacock, Richard & Linda Thompson, a short story called Car Crash While Hitchhiking by Denis Johnson. I had ‘Heart Needs A Home’ in mind, ‘The Great Valerio’; I was just really moving through the world, hanging in the shadows of the people I wanted to be. Hoping, looking out, this is Optimism. I was looking for anything.”
Hot Lunch – Hot Lunch [Reissue/2013] CD/LP (Heavy Psych Sounds)
Hot Lunch is a punk ‘n’ roll band from the San Francisco/Oakland Bay Area that specializes in getting loud, getting weird and getting rad. Janis Ian – The Light At The End Of The Line CD (United Opportunity)
The Light At The End Of The Line is Ian’s first album of new material in 15 years, and is also her last solo studio recording – a “swan song,” she notes. The Light At The End Of The Line bookends a kaleidoscopic catalog that began with her 1967 self-titled debut at age 15. The songs are intimate portraits of getting older but wiser (“I’m Still Standing”), of knowing when to stand up and not take any more shit (“Resist”), of celebrating life’s fleeting beauty (“Swannanoa”), of exalting in your true identity (“Perfect Little Girl”), of paying homage to a lifelong hero and her demons (“Nina”, as in Simone).
Kandia – Quaternary CD (Frontiers)
Kandia was founded by singer Nya Cruz and guitarist André Da Cruz. They decided to name the band Kandia – to obfuscate, to blind by light – as they felt it would represent the positivity they wanted to radiate. Influenced by progressive rock bands such as A Perfect Circle, Tool, Porcupine Tree, Pink Floyd, and metal giants like Metallica and Pantera, the band was able to find a unique sound joining all these influences in their songwriting. Musically, Kandia create raw, melodic, and sensual music that delivers positive messages while not leaving the aggressiveness out of the music.
Miles Kane – Change The Show CD/LP (BMG)
Following a chance “no frills session” with psych-rock duo Sunglasses For Jaws at the band’s Hackney studio, Miles Kane’s fourth solo album Change The Show really began to take shape. “I saw myself in their energy, but also their taste and their knowledge of music,” Miles explains. “It was the first time I’d felt old!” Opening with the honest soft croon of “Tears Are Falling”, the album is a joyous ride from start to finish and features a surprising, but spectacular appearance from Grammy-nominated singer Corinne Bailey Rae for a duet on “Nothing’s Ever Gonna Be Good Enough”. It’s an album that best represents Miles himself: charmingly authentic, and like nothing else you’ll hear in pop music today.

Released last summer on CD – a limited-edition 180gm red color vinyl pressing + bonus 7″ single is now available. “Big Colors is the soundtrack to a movie from 1984 that exists only in my soul. It’s a cliché inside a watercolor painting of neon blue smoke rising off summer streets in the night. It’s the most New York California album I could cut loose from my musical soul, and for me as both a guitar player and songwriter, this is the zenith point dream time. While I won’t be able to match this album for its depth and broad color forms in the future, this is the sound of my soul and a door to a place I’ll be returning to again. The treasures in our past are the shamanic visions of the future when the destination is dream zone 3000. This is that. I’m only dreaming in Big Colors now.” – Ryan Adams

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Digitally remastered 25th Anniversary Edition of Live At Blues Alley, the only solo album released during the late singer Eva Cassidy’s short lifetime. Eva Cassidy’s now legendary concert at Washington DC’s Blues Alley nightclub on January 3, 1996, was in some ways a happy accident. Although Eva had spent years in the studio with producer Chris Biondo creating an eclectic body of work, the pair decided that a live album was the quickest way to achieve their immediate goal of creating a CD to sell at live shows. Eva cashed in a small pension from her day job at a local nursery, her Aunt Claire contributed toward the venture, the Blues Alley venue booked them during their slowest time of the year (just after the New Year’s Eve blow-out), as was a live recording truck with a goal of generating enough profit to purchase a proper PA system for future shows. The result was Live At Blues Alley, released locally a scant few months before Cassidy’s untimely passing from melanoma at the age of 33.

Its introspective and equally anthemic.

It takes them from blues revivalists to head-friendly prog icons and power rock innovators; bridging the gap between their first two bluesy albums and the nirvana and nadir of the band’s most lauded line up of Tony McPhee (guitar and vocals), Pete Cruikshank (bass) and Ken Pustelnik (drums) at their final show on that big American tour that broke up the original trio.
The Gun Club – Preaching The Blues 7×7” (The Flood Gallery)

Nick Hakim and Roy Nathanson – Small Things LP (TMWRK)
Nick Hakim and Roy Nathanson deliver the new collaborative album Small Things. Executive-produced by Isaiah Barr of Onyx Collective, the album sees two artists who are staples in the Onyx Collective universe join forces. In the tradition of minimalist masters Steve Reich and Philip Glass, Haslinger builds from pre-existing fragments of sound combining string loops with newly drawn up string parts.
Heart & Lung – Twistin’ The Knife Away LP (Red Scare)
“We heard about Heart & Lung because they’re deeply involved in their community and are the go-to band for punk shows in Cleveland. And with three singers, this band has as much harmony as they do good karma. Real sweethearts-but they can party too! Imagine the smooth melodies of the Smoking Popes blended with rowdy Midwest punk like Dillinger Four. Look, they have three singers, so they can kinda do what they want, ya know?”

Boris – W (Sacred Bones)
