Bethany Cosentino – Natural Disaster CD/LP (Concord)
On Natural Disaster, the debut solo album from Best Coast’s Bethany Cosentino, the Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter takes close account of the endless catastrophes and upheavals of modern life, offering a high-minded and open-hearted response that makes room for compassion, imagination, and a radical sense of possibility. The new record, produced by Butch Walker, was written in Nashville and Los Angeles, and is described as a departure from the understated indie-pop that Best Coast are known for. The new set was mainly recorded during a series of trips to Walker’s Nashville studio, and puts her voice front and center, both literally and metaphorically, for the first time. [An indie store exclusive orange ‘dreamsicle’ color vinyl pressing is available.]
Darlingside – Everything Is Alive CD/LP (More Doug)
Everything Is Alive finds Darlingside intimate in a way they’ve never been before: embracing individual voices, both sonically and lyrically. Where typically the indie-folk quartet’s songs have been written in super-democratic processes, here, each member spearheaded three tracks – culminating in a collection of truly personal snapshots. By shedding their superpower of vocal harmony and committing to processing their own experiences with loss and change through their writing, Everything Is Alive ends up exuding a softly triumphant possibility—of life and hope.
High Pulp – Days In The Desert CD/LP+MP3 (ANTI-)
Los Angeles-based experimental jazz collective High Pulp release their new album Days In The Desert in peak sweltering summer heat. The titular desert is both literal and metaphorical: it’s the Mojave Desert that the band powers through on their many DIY tours around the country, and the band’s founder / drummer Bobby Granfelt perceives the desert as “a spiritual quest” as well. Amid the trials of our present moment, you must look within, relying solely on your own instincts to keep moving forward. Days In The Desert finds the West Coast band fully emerging into their own sound. Rooted in the jazz tradition while also smitten by indie-rock and electronic music, High Pulp was willing to grab from all these sounds at once to pursue something unique.
Sevendust – Truth Killer CD/LP (Napalm)
Sevendust never follows a linear path. Instead, they continue to bulldoze a lane of their own with a proven one-two punch of rumbling grooves, unpredictable riffing, and stirringly soulful vocals unlike anything else in hard rock. As a result, their music connects straight to the heart as evidenced by their full-contact live shows and diehard “family” of fans. However, the Atlanta quintet defy expectations yet again on their fourteenth full-length. Ultimately, Truth Killer reaffirms there’s only one Sevendust—and they’re here forever. [Indie store exclusive CD and green color vinyl versions are available.]

Ambrose Akinmusire – Beauty Is Enough CD/LP (Origami Harvest)
“Playing solo has just been something that’s been in the back of my head,” Akinmusire says. The appeal, he adds, is the beauty that lives in sitting with oneself – and that being enough.” “I think when you have a lot of technique and you can play almost everything that’s in your head, it’s hard to commit to beauty. It’s hard to not do the flashy stuff,” he continues. “So, I wanted to do a solo project that is just about sitting in the center of beauty. The center of self, which is, for me, beauty.”
Anne-Marie – Unhealthy CD/LP (WB)
Pulling from all parts of her life, Anne-Marie’s third album Unhealthy offers us a sneak peek into her perfectly imperfect world. Penned over a period when she felt ready to revisit and try and make sense of raw, past relationships, whilst also learning to process positive new ones, Unhealthy takes us on a journey from chaos to contentment; this is Anne-Marie standing tall, embracing an all-new version of herself that’s fiercer, bolder, and more blissfully happy than ever before. Albert Bouchard – Imaginos III – Mutant Reformation CD (Deko Music)
Albert Bouchard is best known as one of the founding members of Blue Öyster Cult. [Vinyl version due September 22.]
Brass Riot – The Never Acting Story CD/LP (Kuroneko)
The trio around Constantin von Estorff (sax), Simon Sasse (drums) and Carl Weiß (sax) has been a band since their school days in Lüneburg. What started as street music became a permanent and sought-after formation through the proximity to political initiatives, above all the Fridays-For-Future movement, and appearances at countless demonstrations. The band’s name is slightly misleading, as “brass” in music refers to brass instruments such as the trumpet or tuba, even though most brass bands always include a saxophone. Moreover, the word “brass” means something in the German language, which in turn fits perfectly with this young, energetic trio: Fury. [A limited-edition red color vinyl pressing is available.]
Brian Bromberg – The Magic Of Moonlight CD (Artistry Music)
Guided by the music, Brian Bromberg crafts a spirited new set of contemporary jazz tunes that foreground vibe and soulfulness rather than aggressive virtuosity. The Magic Of Moonlight is an apt title for this evocative piece of work which is deeply imbued with the shadow-cloaked mystery and twilight romance of an evening under the full moon.

[A limited-edition lime color vinyl pressing is available.]
The Clientele – Iam Am Not There Anymore CD/2xLP (Merge)
The Clientele’s I Am Not There Anymore regularly evokes what singer-guitarist Alasdair MacLean calls “the feeling of not being real.” Recording for the album began in 2019 and continued piecemeal until 2022 – in part because of the pandemic, but also because the band wanted to experiment. “We’d always been interested in music other than guitar music, like for donkey’s years,” MacLean says. This time out, he and bassist James Hornsey and drummer Mark Keen incorporated elements of post-bop jazz, contemporary classical, and electronic music. [An indie store exclusive red w/ black color vinyl pressing is available.]
Darlingside – Everything Is Alive CD/LP (More Doug)
Everything Is Alive finds Darlingside intimate in a way they’ve never been before: embracing individual voices, both sonically and lyrically. Girlschool – WTFortyfive? CD/LP (Silver Lining Muisc)
45 years young, British hard rock royalty Girlschool come out swinging with their 14th studio album WTFortyfive?, a deliciously dirty declaration that age is a number that shows how much real raw attitude you have when it really counts. Kim McAuliffe (guitar/vocals), Denise Dufort (drums), Jackie Chambers (guitar/backing vocals) and Tracey Lamb (bass) leave the grit under their fingernails and the scuzz on their crusty leather boots as they riff and stomp their way through 12 statements of intent showing major attitude, some great melodies, and a consistent crunch to every guitar.
Beverly Glenn-Copeland – The Ones Ahead CD/LP (Transgressive)
For decades, the Pennsylvania-born, Canada-based singer, songwriter, and composer has illuminated questions of human interconnectedness with his sincere, searching voice and nimble melodicism. His new album, The Ones Ahead – his first collection of new music in nearly two decades – deepens his explorations into the ways all of us must carry each other forward into the next world. The songs on The Ones Ahead draw inspiration from a wealth of traditions, from American jazz to Irish fiddle songs to West African percussion. [An indie store exclusive vinyl pressing is available.]
Godflesh – Purge CD/LP (Avalanche Recordings)
With the highly anticipated 2023 album Purge, Godflesh revisits and updates the concepts of Pure (1992), as well as bringing a whole host of new dirges and laments. Amongst the many layers of dirt, Purge mangles ’90s hip-hop grooves and puts them through the Godflesh filter to create something futuristic in style – and utterly unique, just as Pure was upon its release in 1992. Both minimal and maximal, Godflesh deliver alien grooves that swing whilst also retaining the psychedelic, bad-trip edge with layer upon layer of filth and heaviness that Godflesh has always been known for. This is, and always has been, feel-bad music. [A limited-edition silver w/ gold splatter color vinyl pressing is available.]
Adam Green – Friends Of Mine [Reissue/2003] CD/2xLP (Kuroneko/Capitane)
For fans of Green and his band The Moldy Peaches, it may be hard to believe that it’s been 20 years since those days of the early 2000s when the indie rock world was set ablaze by a new generation of artists, performers, and songwriters. Within what felt like only a few months, bands like The Strokes, The White Stripes, The Libertines, and The Moldy Peaches, provided indie music audiences with fresh iterations and interpretations of the rock ‘n’ roll canon, with influences that included both standard bearers like The Velvet Underground, Television, The Stones, The Doors, The Stooges, Leonard Cohen, The Modern Lovers, and Bob Dylan, and also more recent artists like Beck, Daniel Johnston, Nirvana, Sonic Youth, Will Oldham, Pavement, and The Silver Jews. The results varied between straight up rock ‘n’ roll and punk with a songwriting, folk-inspired, consciousness. Gone were the ripped-up jeans and flannels of yore. Tight trousers and leather jackets ruled the day.

Phoebe Hunt – Nothing Else Matters CD/LP (Popped Corn)
“Why fiddle and voice? They say the fiddle is the instrument that most resembles the human voice. It’s like I get to sing three-part harmony with myself, preparing to be able to play the songs with others. I have played violin as long as I can remember… it changed to fiddle in college after being inspired by so many great fiddle players I ran into at camps and festivals.”

It’s about taming each song, beyond a quick listening, taking the time to explore its richness. Never repeat, but each time a new breath, a new sound. Often, a disturbing feeling, between the cobbled sound, patched up, and the electro pulsation. The voice envelops us in this unprecedented crossing.

William the Conqueror’s fourth album finds the indie-rock trio firing on all cylinders as frontman Ruarri Joseph confronts the thin line between creativity and madness, inspired by compassion for the real-life angels of the world. Produced by the band in a playground of vintage gear and mixed by Barny Barnicott (Arctic Monkeys, Sam Fender, Kasabian), the resulting album’s ten tracks marry earworm tunes with insistent, imperious, soaring rock shapes, punctuated by chorus hooks that are simultaneously nuanced and anthemic. Yawning Balch – Volume One CD/LP (Heavy Psych Sounds)
“Bob Balch here. In November of 2022 I went out to Joshua Tree for a day of jamming with the guys in Yawning Man with the intention of calling it “Yawning Balch.” No riffs were planned. We just plugged in and played. The only discussion beforehand was that Gary Arce and I wanted to mess with tons of guitar pedals. I knew that while we were jamming it sounded great, but it wasn’t until I got home and listened to it all that I realized we had something special. It’s hard to believe that we jammed for five hours and got two full length LPs and then some out of it. Every player killed it on these recordings and I’m beyond grateful to have my name involved with this legendary band. Fingers crossed they invite me back out annually for more jam sessions. I hope you enjoy these jams and please use responsibly.” [Multiple vinyl colorways are available.]
Neil Young – Official Release Series Discs 22, 23+, 24 & 25 6xCD/9xLP (Reprise)
In Neil Young’s extensive career, this period of music came at a definite turning point. The 1990s were almost ready to start, and Young had recently returned to his long-time home at Reprise Records. It appeared to be a joyous and jubilant moment for the man who had recently celebrated the 21-year anniversary of a solo career that had never stopped progressing. The first album collected in Young’s latest volume of Official Release Series is aptly named Freedom (1989) and includes the song “Rockin’ In the Free World”, Ragged Glory (1990) was a non-stop celebration for the music Neil Young & Crazy Horse are still creating at full force and was recorded at Young’s Broken Arrow Ranch in Northern California. Like troubadours from outer space, Zohastre venture into an hallucinated quest, ecstatic and psychedelic cavalcade, they unleash impro-ritualistic music for trance-like FX and reverse glitch dance moves.
This Week’s Vinyl Exclusives:
7038634357 – Neo Seven LP (Blank Forms Edition)
Within a runtime of just over thirty minutes, Neo Seven contains a spare, beautiful, and raw journey through and around the artist’s emotive, psychologically charged ambient songwriting. The album’s seven tracks bleed into and out of one another, continually forming and deforming between ambient soundscape, song, and silence. As each track builds upon its own interior logic, complex forms emerge out of simple structures, and layers of oscillations commingle and create space for each other. Pulsation is a major motif throughout the record, as Neo Gibson’s heavily processed harmonic melodies, gated regularly by silence, create an expansive field in which an interior, subjective journey takes place.

They said it couldn’t be done. Four different songwriters joining forces to form a single band? There was simply no precedent (outside of CSNY, The Beatles, The Traveling Wilburys, The Highwaymen, Monsters of Folk, etc). And yet Fantastic Cat did it anyway, defying the odds and teaming up to record their highly unanticipated debut, The Very Best Of Fantastic Cat. Captured in the wilds of the Pocono Mountains, the album gleefully careens between genres and decades, mixing electrified ‘60s folk and ‘70s AM radio gold with ‘80s heartland rock and ‘90s alt-country. The result is a record that balances careful craftsmanship and ecstatic abandon in equal measure, a raw, intoxicating collection captured live in the moment and fueled by the chemistry of four longtime friends making music for the sheer joy of it.

With ear-worm melodies, heart-wrenching poetry, eclectic production and anchored by Folick’s once-in-a-lifetime voice, Roach straddles a line between pop and something more experimental.

Locate S, 1 – 1 Locate S LP (Captured Tracks)
Sky blue color vinyl. From teddy grahams to pussy hats, California forest fires to cash cabs, the stuff of American nostalgia and horror adorns a personal reckoning on Christina Schneider’s triumphant third album as Locate S, 1. With a name culled from a Daschel Hammitt noir novel, Wicked Jaw pulls from wildly disparate references and textures to survey the history of American pop music. The Athens, Georgia based songwriter, producer, and virtuosic pop connoisseur authored the album over two years while beginning treatment for childhood sexual abuse by a relative. “I was using these songs as an expression valve for all of these different parts (of myself) that I was trying to integrate,” she explained. The result is a surprisingly tender and often jubilant set of conversations with the ghosts of painful memories, Schneider transforming her metaphysical scars into gleaming armor as she redefines herself on her own terms.
Nick Lowe – Dig My Mood [Reissue/1998] LP+12” (Yep Roc)

Limited-edition blue color vinyl pressing. Includes an EP of bonus tracks.
May Rio – French Bath LP (Dots Per Inch Music)
When I was making the first May Rio LP, it was my first solo project, and I moved fast. I wrote songs quickly, recorded them quickly, and what resulted were little glimpses of a world I was finding my way into. By the time I started making French Bath, I had broken into that world, and could sit still in it, slow down. Flesh out the songs both in their writing and in their production. The songs are longer and pack a bit more of a punch. I drew inspiration from many places. My own lived experiences mostly, but also projected experiences of those around me, books I’ve read, and imagined narratives that I find funny.”
Mid-Air Thief – Gongjoong Doduk LP (Topshelf)
Limited orange and pink glow color vinyl pressing. The pre-cursor to Mid-Air Thief’s cult-acclaimed album Crumbling, Gongjoon Doduk exhibits a distinct universality, merging disparate sounds and styles into a cohesive, electronic-infused folk amalgam that tactfully blurs the lines between organic and synthetic. Listeners are led through enrapturing passages of swirling melodies underscored with eloquent plucks, strums, and bursts of bubbly glitches. Individual phrases drift into one another as if in a dream, cohered by entrancing hooks and vocal soundscapes.
Militarie Gun – Life Under The Gun LP (Loma Vista)

Pete International Airport – It Felt Like The End Of The World LP+MP3 (Little Cloud)
Pete International Airport’s third album, It Felt Like The End Of the World, is a triumph of process and vision. Named after a song by Peter G. Holmström’s other band, The Dandy Warhols, the eclectic project nails the elusive aesthetic of unexpected yet inviting sound art. The band’s quest to build immersive soundscapes that are also classic, catchy songs succeeds, in part, due to Holmström’s uncanny ability to curate and his penchant for dropping collaborators into challenging creative spaces-both virtual and actual-then letting them duke it out. Rachel Goswell from Slowdive, Alexander Hackett from Pang Attack, Dion Lunadon from A Place To Bury Strangers and the D4, and, none-other-than Tom Petersson from Cheap Trick (on 12 string bass), tangle with Peter’s usual coterie of musical foils. The results are folded into Holmström’s hyper-stylized world of symbols, themes, and archetypes.

PWNT – Play What’s Not There LP (Acrophase)
Gold color vinyl pressing. With Play What’s Not There, PWNT created another statement of intention that feels less geared toward shows of drum and stylistic prowess, with which PWNT is clearly endowed, and more toward songwriting and texture. The drums are even more dry, and acoustic guitar as a layering instrument has taken the place of keyboard and synth. Thankfully though, PWNT’s love of horns remains. As a result, the songs sound older, both in terms of sonics and maturity.

Sandwell District with a brand-new release of their era-defining 2010 album Feed-Forward – out on vinyl for the first time since its original pressing via The Point Of Departure Recording Company. The original print of the album, described by RA a decade later as “the final transmission from a collective whose influence still colors music today”, was effectively a private press that sold out on impact – three days before Christmas, with no accompanying promotion – and, despite it changing hands for up to four figure sums, it has never been repressed.

Scattered Order – Artefacts From The Fuzz Mines LP (Sleepers)
In the dimly lit corners of Australia’s underground music scene, there exists a name that has been haunting the eardrums of the brave and unsettlingly curious for decades. Scattered Order, a noise band formed by three enigmatic figures – Mitchell Jones, Michael Tee and Shane Fahey stands as an embodiment of auditory torment. With their latest compilation album, Scattered Order, weathered by time and soaked in a sea of dissonance, look back on a dark and noisy musical journey that has been nothing short of disturbing.
Chuck Senrick -Dreamin’ [Reissue/1977] LP (Numero)
The only album to soundtrack both late ’70s Minneapolis lounges and a Travis Scott x Dior fashion show. Recorded in a host of living rooms with only a Fender Rhodes piano, a Donca Matic Mini Pops drum machine, and Senrick’s wide-eyed, 20-year-old voice, the 1977 LP disappeared into the wild and joined the Wendigo in Minnesota lore. A provocative mix of marina soul, easy listening, and loner folk, Dreamin’ is a sanguine sliver of the American private mind garden. [A limited-edition gray colorway is available.]

More famously Snowy toured as second guitarist with Pink Floyd augmenting the band’s sound on the tours to promote the Animals and The Wall albums. At the same time, she breaks boundaries, dropping off bars with uncontainable charisma and belting out hooks with show-stopping range.

Vaniel was influenced by noir novels and screwed up destinies, the love of punchline rap since school and the magnificent French soundtracks from the ‘70s by Vanier or de Roubaix.
Viagra Boys – Common Sense 12” (Year0001)
Some say Viagra Boys is something akin to a looking glass pointed at the absurdity of existence and misconceptions of modern society. A depraved and ferociously bass-driven judgement on western civilization, a distorted 24/7 party on the acid highway whilst the world slowly rots away.
Others claim they´re more like a gross joke on masculinity, gleefully serving up escapist narratives lacking any form of self-preservation, like an obfuscated back alley door into the backwaters of the human psyche. Metaphors aside, Viagra Boys is an unapologetically raw sextet comprised of classically trained jazz musicians, karaoke loving tattoo artists and seasoned hardcore scene veterans.
