Rustin’ In the Rain is the eagerly anticipated new album from singer-songwriter Tyler Childers. This collection of new songs is Childers’ sixth studio album, and the follow up to his critically acclaimed release Can I Take My Hounds to Heaven?. Rustin’ In the Rain is produced by Childers alongside his longtime band The Food Stamps, and the album features the heartfelt single “In Your Love”, which Tyler first teased to fans earlier in 2023 during his Bonnaroo Music Festival performance. You can’t get Deeper if you’re standing still. That’s intentional, says the Chicago quartet’s Nic Gohl. “Does it feel good when you’re listening to this song? Does your body want to move with it?” These are the questions he asked himself as he and bandmates Shiraz Bhatti, Drew McBride, and Kevin Fairbairn were writing and recording Careful!, their third record and Sub Pop debut. “I wanted these to be interesting songs, but in a way where a two-year-old would vibe out to it,” Gohl adds. “It’s pop music, basically.” [A limited “Loser Edition” smog color vinyl pressing is available.]

Durry – Suburban Legend CD/LP (Big Pip)

As a band, Taryn and Austin’s journey happened both unexpectedly and fortuitously. At the start of the COVID pandemic, Austin and his wife moved back into his parents’ house, where Taryn was also living at the time. Faced with nothing but time, he got back to songwriting, regularly asking Taryn for input — or as the two playfully put it, “Gen Z quality control.” The immediate result of their musical partnership was the pop-punk/alternative anthem “Who’s Laughing Now”, which leads with wry, tongue-in-cheek lyrics about the futility of young adulthood in 2023. After posting an unfinished version of “Who’s Laughing Now” on TikTok, it swiftly took off, galvanizing thousands of viewers who shared their coming-of-age frustrations. Clearly, the song’s sentiments – which land somewhere between a shrug and a clenched fist – resonated with millions of listeners, and today Durry have recorded a fully fleshed-out version of “Who’s Laughing Now,” which is set to appear on their riveting, perfectly sardonic debut LP, Suburban Legend. Everclear – Live At The Whisky A Go Go CD/2xLP (Sunset Blvd.)

Live At The Whisky A Go Go was recorded and filmed in late 2022 during Everclear’s 30th Anniversary Tour back in vocalist, guitarist and founder Art Alexakis’ hometown of Los Angeles and marked the first time the acclaimed quartet performed at the famed venue. The 17-track collection features all the hits and hidden treasures from throughout Everclear’s extraordinary catalog as well as two bonus studio tracks, last year’s single “Year Of The Tiger” and new single “Sing Away”. “Live At The Whisky A Go Go is raw, loose, noisy, and kind of ragged around the edges…just like rock & roll is supposed to be,” shares Alexakis. Kristin Hersh – Clear Pond Road CD/LP (Fire)

Kristin Hersh’s new album is a cinematic road trip; a series of personal vignettes from a fiercely independent auteur, sitting plush with layers of all-consuming strings and mellotron. It’s a watershed moment in a career overflowing with creative firsts and inspirational thinking; an elegant piece of personal reportage, a home movie caught in time. Previously, the juxtaposition of light and dark has been essential to the drama of Throwing Muses and 50FOOTWAVE, but this solo set is something of a departure; more inward looking, quieter but outspoken, underpinned by background noise for ambience and awkwardness. Clear Pond Road is a life-affirming statement, a further part of the jigsaw, a very personal memoir, from street signs to snapshots; a late blossoming and coming-of-age from a true icon of independence. Logan Ledger – Golden State CD/LP (Rounder)

Golden State, the second full-length from singer/songwriter Logan Ledger, marks a stylistic departure from the timeless country noir of Ledger’s critically lauded debut. This time around, Ledger worked with producer Shooter Jennings, dreaming up a lush and spirited sound partly inspired by the California country-rock scene of the late ‘60s and early ‘70s. Jalen Ngonda – Come Around And Love Me CD/LP (Daptone)

Anyone who has had the pleasure of seeing Jalen perform live knows that he is one of the most captivating performers on today’s soul scene. His full-length debut on Daptone Records is equal parts raw feeling and elegance and exudes confidence and charm. Over the last few months, he has disarmed packed rooms of rowdy concert goers, leaving them silent as they hold fast to every syllable sung. Recorded at Hive Mind Studios in Brooklyn, NY, with the help of producer/arrangers Mike Buckley and Vincent Chiarito (both members of Charles Bradley’s Extraordinaires) and crack team of a-list musicians, his upcoming album blends heavy arrangements and introspective lyrics with sophistication, leaving the listener in a blissful wash of wonderment. The Postal Service – Everything Will Change CD/2xLP+MP3 (Sub Pop)

Everything Will Change is a feature-length documentary concert film of The Postal Service’s performance at the Greek Theater in Berkeley, CA during their 2013 reunion tour. A collaboration between Benjamin Gibbard (of Death Cab for Cutie) and Jimmy Tamborello (from Dntel), with Rilo Kiley’s Jenny Lewis, The Postal Service released Give Up, their one and only album, in 2003. That record went on to sell over a million copies and most of the band’s fans never had the chance to see them perform live. In celebration of the 10-year anniversary of Give Up, the band reunited to tour the world. Everything Will Change captures one of the nights when everything did change. Rain Parade – Last Rays Of A Dying Sun CD/LP/Cassette (Label 51/Flatir On Recordings)

Rain Parade’s new LP Last Rays Of A Dying Sun remains loyal to the hypnotic psychedelic stylings and hook-filled melodies for which the band is well known. Featuring original founding members and songwriters Matt Piucci and Steven Roback, along with long-time producer Jim Hill and guitarist John Thoman, Rain Parade creates a soundscape that takes you on a journey through time and space, with original songs that range from spacey folk to raging psychedelic rock. Co-produced by Allison along with dim star (JT Nero and Drew Lindsay), it features her “Rainbow Coalition” band of female musicians along with special guests: the legendary Wendy and Lisa, Brandi Carlile, Brandy Clark, and Hozier. Sparklehorse – Bird Machine CD/LP+MP3 (ANTI-)

Sparklehorse was an American indie rock band formed by singer-songwriter and multi-instrumentalist Mark Linkous in the mid-1990s. Born on September 9, 1962, in Arlington, Virginia, Linkous began playing music as a teenager. Described as an artist who “compelled listeners to heed the beauty of darkness” by Pitchfork, Sparklehorse released many influential records, including the renowned albums Vivadixiesubmarinetransmissionplot and Good Morning Spider in the ’90s, It’s A Wonderful Life and Dreamt For Light Years In The Belly of a Mountain in the early ‘00s, and a collaborative album Dark Night Of The Soul released in 2010. Bird Machine is a never-before-heard album. originally recorded in 2010 and mixed by Joel Hamilton (who also worked on It’s A Wonderful Life). Joel’s brother Matt notes, “Great care has been taken to archive and preserve Mark’s music. Darcy James Argue’s Secret Society – Dynamic Maximum Tension 2xCD (Nonesuch)

Composer and bandleader Darcy James Argue and his Secret Society ensemble make their Nonesuch Records debut with Dynamic Maximum Tension. The album pays homage to some of Argue’s key influences with original songs dedicated to R. Buckminster Fuller, Alan Turing, and Mae West. Fellow Nonesuch artist Cécile McLorin Salvant, with whom Argue collaborated on her long-form musical fable Ogresse, joins the ensemble for “Mae West: Advice”. Dynamic Maximum Tension‘s eleven tracks, on two CDs, also include a response to Duke Ellington’s “Diminuendo And Crescendo In Blue” titled “Tensile Curves”, among other original songs.

Buju Banton – Born For Greatness CD/2xLP (Roc Nation)

Buju Banton’s new album, Born For Greatness, features the singles “High Life” (with Snoop Dogg), “Body Touching Body” (with Victoria Monet), and more roots/dancehall reggae songs. [A limited-edition gold w/ smoke color vinyl pressing is available.]

Blackbird Angels – Solsorte CD (Frontiers)

Guitarist Tracii Guns (L.A. Guns) and bassist/vocalist Todd Kerns (Slash, Toque, Heroes And Monsters) have joined forces in a new rock ‘n’ roll side project, Blackbird Angels. Adam Hamilton, a multi-instrumentalist who spent time in L.A. Guns and has also produced albums by L.A. Guns, Vains Of Jenna, George Lynch, and more, rounds out the line-up on drums.

Black Market Brass – Hox CD/LP (Colemine)

Hox is a new take on afrobeat that combines traditional grooves with heavy, hypnotic, sci-fi sounds that reflect the band’s myriad of influences as record collectors across genres. “We didn’t leave the traditional afro-beat sound behind, but we did allow ourselves to pull from different places with less hesitation.” Shared saxophonist Cole Pulice. Like their previous albums, the nine-piece band recorded Hox live to tape. “The sound and aesthetic of the analog recording process is important for this kind of music,” Pulice explained. “We’re looking to capture lightning in a bottle.” With that, the album features several sections of heavily processed synthesizers, harsh glitches, fuzzed out guitars, and a burning percussion section that pays homage to the traditional drumming cultures of Nigeria and Ghana. The Blind Boys Of Alabama – Echoes Of The South CD/LP (Single Lock)

Hailed as “gospel titans” by Rolling Stone, The Blind Boys Of Alabama defied the considerable odds stacked against them in the segregated South, working their way up from singing for pocket change to performing for three different presidents over the course of an 80-year career that saw them break down racial barriers, soundtrack the Civil Rights movement, and help redefine modern gospel music forever. The five-time Grammy-winner’s latest album, Echoes Of The South, draws its name from the Birmingham radio program that hosted the group’s very first professional performance back in 1944. Pairing traditional spirituals and long-lost gospel classics with vintage soul and R&B tunes, the collection is as moving as it is timeless, transcending genre and era to touch something deep and fundamental about the human condition.

Baikida E.J. Carroll – Orange Fish Tears [Reissue/1974] CD/LP (Souffle Continu)

In 1972, trumpeter Baikida Carroll and some of his colleagues from the Black Artists Group (more precisely saxophonist/flutist Oliver Lake, trombonist Joseph Bowie, drummer Charles “Bobo” Shaw and trumpeter Floyd LeFlore) took the advice of their friends in the Art Ensemble Of Chicago and left their native Missouri to come and discover the bright lights of Paris for themselves. The following year they would even get the chance to record their only album which would rapidly attain mythical status and a collector’s item: In Paris, Aries 1973. Therefore, it was not surprising that they crossed paths with Jef Gilson, who offered Baikida Carroll the chance to record his first album under his own name.

The Doors were a few months away from stardom in March 1967 when they played five sparsely attended shows at a small club in San Francisco called The Matrix. These uninhibited performances would have been fleeting if not for Peter Abram, who co-owned the pizza parlor-turned-nightclub with Jefferson Airplane founder Marty Balin. An avid recordist, Abram taped concerts at The Matrix regularly and his recordings of The Doors, made between March 7-11, 1967, spawned one of the band’s most storied bootlegs. At long last, all known Matrix recordings, sourced entirely from Abram’s original master recordings, are available.

Courtney Barnett – End Of The Day (Music From The Film Anonymous Club) LP (Mom & Pop Music)

Clear vinyl pressing. Anonymous Club is Danny Cohen’s candid documentary about the personal travails and hard-fought triumphs of Courtney Barnett, as she rose through the ranks of indie rock during the last decade. A cautiously redemptive portrait, any happy ending reflects the possibilities of fulfillment and stability, not the things themselves. In May 2021, months before the film’s release, Courtney Barnett and collaborator Stella Mozgawa rendezvoused with Cohen in Melbourne to shape a score that fit that premise-nothing too obvious or instructive, to tell the audience how they should feel. Barnett found she liked listening to what the duo had made, existing within its reflective gaze. She began sorting through those little instrumentals like amoebic puzzle pieces, figuring out how they fit into a full picture. The result is a seamless series of 17 instrumental improvisations called End Of The Day (Music From The Film Anonymous Club), soundtrack reimagined as impressionistic sound-art collage.

Besvärjelsen – Atlas LP (Magnetic Eye)

Swedish for “conjuring” Besvärjelsen was forged in 2014. After penning the Glen Campbell mega-hit “Gentle On My Mind” and appearing repeatedly both on Glen’s weekly variety show and on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, John Hartford could have taken the show biz glide path to financial security and ease. Instead, the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist (and steamboat enthusiast) moved back to Nashville from L.A., signed a contract with Warner Bros., and proceeded to create one of the most influential and groundbreaking albums not just in bluegrass but in modern country music. 1971’s Aereo-Plain assembled a veritable supergroup consisting of fiddler Vassar Clements, dobroist Tut Taylor, guitarist Norman Blake and bassist Randy Scruggs to play a set of mostly original tunes that were unlike anything the staid bluegrass community had ever heard before.

This 1989 release from the German band Paradox is a full-fledged concept album, commemorating the 13th century Albigensian Crusade that sought to eliminate the heretical Cathar sect. Other like-minded members of this metal horde include Anthrax, Testament, and Exodus, but really, Heresy is a one-of-a-kind record, and a hard act to follow, as this was the last release from Paradox for eleven years.

Renowned for his distinctive nasal voice, he influenced the music industry for years to follow. After the hugely successful Batman soundtrack album, Prince returned in 1991 with yet another OST, this time featuring songs from his self-directed movie Graffiti Bridge, the follow-up to Purple Rain. The alubm features the hit Prince single “Thieves In The Temple”, plus the Prince-produced Tevin Campbell single, “Round And Round”.

R.E.M. – Reveal [Reissue/2001] LP (Craft Recordings)

Released in 2001, Reveal was co-produced with long-time collaborator Patrick McCarthy. The album sees R.E.M. experiment with synthesized sound, but also make “a conscious return to their classic sound” (AllMusic). Under The Table And Above The Sun is available for the first time on vinyl to celebrate its 20th anniversary. Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. In the 1950s and ‘60s, the blues was the dominant form of Black vernacular music throughout Texas and the surrounding areas. In segregated neighborhoods, community members gathered in saloons, dancehalls, and each other’s homes to hear their neighbors sing their stories of sorrow, heartbreak, jubilation, and triumph. Robert “Mack” McCormick, an academically untrained but fanatical devotee of the blues, stepped into this world and became one of its most devout advocates and documentarians. By photographing Black and Latino Texans and their neighborhoods, as well as recording and interviewing musicians-many of whom never stepped foot into a proper recording studio – McCormick endeared and eventually embedded himself into these communities. Playing For The Man At The Door: Field Recordings From The Collection Of Mack McCormick, 1958-1971 is the first compilation of music drawn from his legendary archive, which indelibly documents a pivotal moment in African American history.
