Does your body want to move with it?” These are the questions he asked himself as he and bandmates Shiraz Bhatti, Drew McBride, and Kevin Fairbairn were writing and recording Careful!, their third record and Sub Pop debut. “I wanted these to be interesting songs, but in a way where a two-year-old would vibe out to it,” Gohl adds. “It’s pop music, basically.” [A limited “Loser Edition” smog color vinyl pressing is available.]
Durry – Suburban Legend CD/LP (Big Pip)
As a band, Taryn and Austin’s journey happened both unexpectedly and fortuitously. Faced with nothing but time, he got back to songwriting, regularly asking Taryn for input — or as the two playfully put it, “Gen Z quality control.” The immediate result of their musical partnership was the pop-punk/alternative anthem “Who’s Laughing Now”, which leads with wry, tongue-in-cheek lyrics about the futility of young adulthood in 2023. After posting an unfinished version of “Who’s Laughing Now” on TikTok, it swiftly took off, galvanizing thousands of viewers who shared their coming-of-age frustrations. Clearly, the song’s sentiments – which land somewhere between a shrug and a clenched fist – resonated with millions of listeners, and today Durry have recorded a fully fleshed-out version of “Who’s Laughing Now,” which is set to appear on their riveting, perfectly sardonic debut LP, Suburban Legend. Kristin Hersh – Clear Pond Road CD/LP (Fire)
Kristin Hersh’s new album is a cinematic road trip; a series of personal vignettes from a fiercely independent auteur, sitting plush with layers of all-consuming strings and mellotron. It’s a watershed moment in a career overflowing with creative firsts and inspirational thinking; an elegant piece of personal reportage, a home movie caught in time. Clear Pond Road is a life-affirming statement, a further part of the jigsaw, a very personal memoir, from street signs to snapshots; a late blossoming and coming-of-age from a true icon of independence. Black Market Brass – Hox CD/LP (Colemine)
Hox is a new take on afrobeat that combines traditional grooves with heavy, hypnotic, sci-fi sounds that reflect the band’s myriad of influences as record collectors across genres. “We didn’t leave the traditional afro-beat sound behind, but we did allow ourselves to pull from different places with less hesitation.” Shared saxophonist Cole Pulice. Like their previous albums, the nine-piece band recorded Hox live to tape. “The sound and aesthetic of the analog recording process is important for this kind of music,” Pulice explained. “We’re looking to capture lightning in a bottle.” With that, the album features several sections of heavily processed synthesizers, harsh glitches, fuzzed out guitars, and a burning percussion section that pays homage to the traditional drumming cultures of Nigeria and Ghana. The five-time Grammy-winner’s latest album, Echoes Of The South, draws its name from the Birmingham radio program that hosted the group’s very first professional performance back in 1944. Super Furry Animals – Phantom Power [Reissue/2003] 3xCD/2xLP (BMG)
Super Furry Animals were one of the first post-alternative bands, fusing together several disparate musical genres – including power pop, punk rock, techno, and progressive rock – creating a shimmering, melodic, irreverent, and willfully artsy rock & roll. Produced by the band, Phantom Power keeps a much lower profile than the band’s previous work. The album for the most part, is awash with pedal steel, acoustic guitars, and vocal harmonies. But if you think the creative juices have ceased, you could barely be more wrong. Gruff Rhys’ songwriting moves a step forward on Phantom Power, with playful story-based lyrics about turtles, mongers, ninjas, and cabbages contrasting with lines about death, radiation, and war. Or, as the Beastie’s once rapped, slow and low, that is the tempo”. There’s Hawaiian drum machine bossa balearica from Island Band, percussive Afro post punk from Czech jazz singer Jana Koubkova, and breathy-bubbling-dubwise-slap-bass-soul from Debbe & The Code. Just prior to the pandemic, the multi-talented artist went to Nashville to record at Cowboy Jack Clement’s legendary Sound Emporium Studio for what would become Dixie Blur (2020), a collection of songs that harkened back to his Southern roots, both musically and personally. Dixie Blur found Wilson reaching back to the musical foundation of his upbringing while simultaneously moving forward by infusing the music with modern textures and aesthetic soundscapes. “Eat The Worm feels like a celestial meeting point for Wilson, who has dipped a toe in jazz, country, psych rock, folk, roots, and pop.” – No Depression

Courtney Barnett – End Of The Day (Music From The Film Anonymous Club) LP (Mom & Pop Music)
Clear vinyl pressing. Anonymous Club is Danny Cohen’s candid documentary about the personal travails and hard-fought triumphs of Courtney Barnett, as she rose through the ranks of indie rock during the last decade. A cautiously redemptive portrait, any happy ending reflects the possibilities of fulfillment and stability, not the things themselves. In May 2021, months before the film’s release, Courtney Barnett and collaborator Stella Mozgawa rendezvoused with Cohen in Melbourne to shape a score that fit that premise-nothing too obvious or instructive, to tell the audience how they should feel. Barnett found she liked listening to what the duo had made, existing within its reflective gaze. She began sorting through those little instrumentals like amoebic puzzle pieces, figuring out how they fit into a full picture. The result is a seamless series of 17 instrumental improvisations called End Of The Day (Music From The Film Anonymous Club), soundtrack reimagined as impressionistic sound-art collage.
Besvärjelsen – Atlas LP (Magnetic Eye)
Swedish for “conjuring” Besvärjelsen was forged in 2014. Brötzmann / Van Hove / Bennink – Outspan No 2 [Reissue/1975] LP (Cien Fuegos)
Outspan No 1 is nothing less than an ideal distillation of the broad approach to sound creation utilized by the three-ring circus that is Brötzmann, Van Hove, and Bennink, here with the added bonus of Mangelsdorff. Recorded a month after Outspan No 1, Outspan No 2 offers up four more sonic delights from the core trio of Brötzmann, Van Hove, and Bennink. Rarely has free jazz/Euro improv/circus music/[your identifier here] sounded so unfettered and delightful — adventurous without seeming self-serious, silly yet not without gravity. A must for any fan of these three maestros.

Chicago – Chicago X [Reissue/1976] LP (Friday Music)
Chocolate brown color vinyl pressing.
Brandy Clark – Brandy Clark LP (WB)
Released in May on CD – now available on vinyl. “In both content and style, Brandy Clark’s self-titled new album serves as a homecoming following three bold, loosely conceptual releases that situated her in a lane distinct from the parochial strictures of country radio. Not only does the album find her singing openly about her background, including her family (‘She Smoked In The House’) and home state of Washington (‘Northwest’), it also hews closer to country conventions than her prior releases. While a self-titled album is often intended as a defining creative statement, a summation of an artist’s legacy or style, Brandy Clark is more uncharacteristic. Instead of foregrounding Clark’s knack for wordplay and humor, the album announces the singer as a virtuosa, engaging with country music’s well-worn tropes with both skill and refinement.” – Victoria Stevens, Slant
The Crave – Inner War Delerium LP (Heat Crimes)
For over two decades Jonathan Katsav has used his Crave project to fray rap at its fringes, using Memphis and Houston’s low-and-slow legacy to inform sounds that have as much in common with Merzbow as they do Tommy Wright III. Working under a variety of different monikers such as Lieu Noir, Sniper Bait and Soul Collector, the French producer is most prolific as Crave, and Inner War Delirium is a substantial and broadly cinematic addition to his canon.

Peter Daltry & The Know Escape – Running Through Chelsea LP (Think Like A Key)
Singer-songwriter Peter Daltrey returns with a brand-new album Running Through Chelsea together with The Know Escape. This is a 50/50 collaboration with Mark Mortimer, formerly of DC Fontana and The Sorrows, who has always been a fan of Peter’s work. Chelsea is more sonic expressionism from the two musicians; the songs are “psychedelic” in a sense without ever falling into the trap of being shoddy xeroxes of past glories. This is modern, forward-looking music with a lot of techniques and textures that Kaleidoscope fans will enjoy.
Betty Davis – Betty Davis [Reissue/1973] CD/LP (Light In The Attic)
Betty Davis – They Say I’m Different [Reissue/1974] CD/LP (Light In The Attic)
Betty Davis – Is It Love Or Desire [Reissue/2009] LP (Light In The Attic)
One can hardly imagine the genre-busting, culture-crossing musical magic of Outkast, Prince, Erykah Badu, Rick James, The Roots, or even the early Red Hot Chili Peppers without the influence of R&B pioneer Betty Davis. Her style of raw and revelatory punk-funk defies any notions that women can’t be visionaries in the worlds of rock and pop. In recent years, rappers from Ice Cube to Talib Kweli to Ludacris have rhymed over her intensely strong but sensual music. [Color vinyl pressings of They Say I’m Different (Coke bottle clear) and Is It Love Or Desire (translucent orange) are available.

Deities Of Deathlike Sleep was conceived and recorded with the same mindset and the same team as our previous recordings, keeping it quick, spontaneous, and enjoyable. This time it turned out a bit more dynamic, with the pummeling fury interspersed with some doom, gloom, and darkness. But still, it’s simply ten tracks of Swedish f***ing death metal, the way we love it.” – Grand Cadaver

After penning the Glen Campbell mega-hit “Gentle On My Mind” and appearing repeatedly both on Glen’s weekly variety show and on The Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour, John Hartford could have taken the show biz glide path to financial security and ease. Instead, the singer/songwriter/multi-instrumentalist (and steamboat enthusiast) moved back to Nashville from L.A., signed a contract with Warner Bros., and proceeded to create one of the most influential and groundbreaking albums not just in bluegrass but in modern country music. 1971’s Aereo-Plain assembled a veritable supergroup consisting of fiddler Vassar Clements, dobroist Tut Taylor, guitarist Norman Blake and bassist Randy Scruggs to play a set of mostly original tunes that were unlike anything the staid bluegrass community had ever heard before.

The Staple Singers – Songs For An Uncloudy Day LP (Acrobat)
The Staple Singers were one of gospel music’s most unique and best-known family groups. Thanks to leading lady Mavis Staples powerhouse of a voice, they went on to have soul chart success in the 1970’s with hits such as “I’ll Take You There”. This, however, is a different sound. Beauty and soul laid bare. Taking influences from contemporaries such as Charley Patton, Roebuck “Pops” Staples combined his love of the blues and gospel to create a family gospel group so unique they were often mocked. Replacing the traditional piano accompaniment of gospel with his unashamedly bluesy, highly reverbed Mississippi cotton-patch electric guitar and sharing lead vocals with his 14-year-old daughter Mavis, “Pops” and the family became an influence on artists such as Pete Seeger, Bob Dylan, Jerry Lee Lewis, Gene Vincent, and The Band.

The kind of band whose members are fully immersed in their local scene-through a handful of notable side projects and the show-promoting Philly staple 4333 Collective-the quintet’s sound takes wide-spectrum influence from it’s environment. The result is an amalgam of complex song structures and flourishes of technical acumen, wholly unconcerned with genre, yet evoking the specific styles of touchstones such as Paramore and Circa Survive.

Thrice – The Artist In The Ambulance – Revisited LP (Miscellaneous)
A re-recorded version of the post-hardcore band’s third album. “What would it sound like to play these old songs after 20 years of playing and singing under our belts? We know that playing the revisionist is a dangerous game so we were always a little uneasy about trying to go back and mess with something that people loved, people who had none of the hang-ups about the record that we did. But, since we decided to do this anyway, we tried to let that wariness guide us in how we approached the record, and in the end we decided to make very minimal structural changes.”
Tanya Tucker – Sweet Western Sound LP (Fantasy)

Sweet Western Sound is Tanya Tucker’s first album of new music since 2019’s 2x Grammy Award-winning, While I’m Livin’, the re-introduction that revitalized her career and brought her music to a new generation of fans. While that album’s stripped-down, singer-songwriter approach leaned toward the acoustic side, Sweet Western Sound‘s framework is more muscular, evoking, at times, the vintage West Coast country-rock productions of the ’70s and ’80s. Produced by Brandi Carlile and Shooter Jennings.

Various Artists – A Mighty Wind: The Album LP (Real Gone Music)
Limited forest green color vinyl pressing. The key to the success of Christopher Guest’s satirical comedies is that, not so deep down, he harbors real affection and deep understanding for the targets of his lampooning. So, while A Mighty Wind lay the hopelessly square excesses and petty jealousies of the early ’60s folk movement bare for all to see, it also captured the naïve, yes, but charming idealism of the time… and wound up presenting performances that do such a good job of imitating the original recordings that inspired them that sometimes you had to squint pretty hard to see the wink and the nod behind the songs.
Various Artists – Playing For The Man At The Door: Field Recordings From The Collection Of Mack McCormick, 1958-1971 6xLP (Smithsonian Folkways)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. In the 1950s and ‘60s, the blues was the dominant form of Black vernacular music throughout Texas and the surrounding areas. In segregated neighborhoods, community members gathered in saloons, dancehalls, and each other’s homes to hear their neighbors sing their stories of sorrow, heartbreak, jubilation, and triumph. Robert “Mack” McCormick, an academically untrained but fanatical devotee of the blues, stepped into this world and became one of its most devout advocates and documentarians. By photographing Black and Latino Texans and their neighborhoods, as well as recording and interviewing musicians-many of whom never stepped foot into a proper recording studio – McCormick endeared and eventually embedded himself into these communities. Playing For The Man At The Door: Field Recordings From The Collection Of Mack McCormick, 1958-1971 is the first compilation of music drawn from his legendary archive, which indelibly documents a pivotal moment in African American history.

They may have taken 13 years between albums, but the group sounds better than ever across these twelve tracks, and their signature soulful ska sound somehow manages to be both timely and timeless all at once. While Dedication is chock full of newly penned numbers as strong as any in the band’s catalog, longtime fans will recognize “Room To Breathe”, an updated version of a tune from their 2005 debut. Initially only available digitally, the music is now coming to vinyl with updated artwork and a lyric insert, just in time for their long-awaited return to the stage. Deeper – Careful! (Sub Pop)
You can’t get Deeper if you’re standing still. That’s intentional, says the Chicago quartet’s Nic Gohl. “Does it feel good when you’re listening to this song? Does your body want to move with it?” These are the questions he asked himself as he and bandmates Shiraz Bhatti, Drew McBride, and Kevin Fairbairn were writing and recording Careful!, their third record and Sub Pop debut. “I wanted these to be interesting songs, but in a way where a two-year-old would vibe out to it,” Gohl adds. “It’s pop music, basically.”

The Handsome Family – Hollow (Milk & Scissors)

Their work has been covered by many artists including Jeff Tweedy, Andrew Bird, and most-recently, Phoebe Bridgers. Their song “Far From Any Road” was the opening theme for HBOs True Detective season one. Handsome Family songs take place under overpasses and inside airports. Historical figures like George A. Custer and Nikola Tesla appear alongside a flying milkman and the whisper of an air conditioner against a plastic tree. Their eleventh studio album, Hollow, delves into the natural world at the edges of the man-made.
Rain Parade – Last Rays Of A Dying Sun (Label 51/Flatir On Recordings)

With guest appearances from the Bangles, Debbie and Vicki Peterson and the Moore Brothers, this album is a must for the psychedelic rock fan and beyond.
