Filled to the brim with new takes on classic songs we’ve known and loved for decades, this set of music continues to serve up the unmistakable trumpet playing of the Tijuana Brass master. Herb covers everything from Jerry Reed’s “East Bound And Down” to Elvis’ “(Marie’s The Name) His Latest Flame” and the Beatles’ “And I Love Her”. Other hits include “Father And Son”, “We’ve Only Just Begun” and the titular song “When You Wish Upon A Star”.

[An indie store exclusive green w/ smoke color vinyl pressing is available.]
Baroness – Stone CD/2xCD/LP/Cassette (Abraxan Hymns)
The origins of Stone go back to 2020. It is not a pandemic record, but the core of it was written during its darkest days. Anxiety, relief, and resolve are stitched deeply throughout. When the foursome was isolated in Pennsylvania and New York, turning stems of music into full-fledged songs felt insurmountable. Barones toiled as the world roiled. Creativity fully flourished only when they escaped to an Airbnb in Barryville, a quaint hamlet on the New York/Pennsylvania border. The undulating “Beneath The Rose”, the energetic drive of “Anodyne”, the trad-metal burlof “Last Word”, and the dynamic introspection of “Shine” rushed out, as did the motorik of “Choir” and the emotional heft of “Magnolia”. Stone was a sort of catharsis, a turning of the page, a middle finger to the suffocating insincerity of expectation. [The deluxe double-CD edition features six live tracks recorded in 2022. A variety of color vinyl variants themed after each song – including and indie store exclusive red pressing – were pressed.]
Bombino – Sahel CD/LP (Partisan)
Guitar luminary and Tuareg folk hero Omara “Bombino” Moctar knows the nomadic life well. Being constantly on the road for his music while also perpetually on the move throughout the Sahel region of Africa is the norm. So when the pandemic brought the world to a screeching halt, Bombino found himself in an unfamiliar space: being in one place. What resulted was Sahel, the follow-up to 2018’s Deran, a record that turned Bombino into the first-ever Grammy-nominated artist from Niger. This new collection of songs, named after the African region spanning East-West from the Atlantic Ocean to the Red Sea, is Bombino’s most personal, powerful, and politically minded work to date. It’s also his most sonically diverse, a quality he set out to achieve from the start, and one that is meant to directly mirror the complex tapestry of cultures and people that make up the Sahel region itself. [A limited-edition translucent blue color vinyl pressing is available.]
Briscoe – West Of It All CD/LP (ATO)
West Of It All, the debut album from Americana folk-rock band Briscoe, is a coming-of-age soundtrack set against the backdrop of the Texas Hill Country. Written in the Lone Star State and recorded in North Carolina, it’s an album that charts its own musical geography, with production from Grammy-nominee Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Caamp, Nathaniel Rateliff) and adventurous songwriting that bridges the gap between classic American roots music and its modern-day incarnation. [A limited-edition white color vinyl pressing is available.]
Dengue Fever – Ting Mong CD/LP (MRI)
Ting Mong is the sixth full-length album of new material from Cambodian/American band Dengue Fever, and their first album in more than eight years. In Khmer folklore, a Ting Mong is a decoy or mannequin, similar to a scarecrow, used to fight away evil spirits and plagues. On Ting Mong, Dengue Fever’s unmistakable amalgam of styles and musical traditions is at its most cohesive and prismatic. There’s Chhmon Nimol’s Cambodian identity, of course, in constant dialogue with the discursive playing of a tight band that has always proudly contained multitudes. Whether they’re evoking psychedelia or surf rock, Afro grooves or vintage soundtracks, there’s a dense, profound curiosity characterizing these musicians playing one solidly built on life experience.
Explosions In The Sky – End CD/LP/Cassette (Temporary Residence)
End, the enigmatic new album by Explosions In The Sky, was inspired by darkness, but became a loud, dramatic, wild rumination on life and death. “Our starting point was the concept of an ending—death, or the end of a friendship or relationship. Every song comes from a story, or an idea one of us has had that we’ve all expanded on and made its own world. Maybe it’s our nature, but we kept feeling that the album title was ultimately open to a lot more interpretation—the end of a thing or a time can mean a stop, but it can also mean a beginning, and what happens after one thing ends might pale in comparison to what it becomes next,” says the band about the album. End is perhaps the “grandest” Explosions In The Sky album – melding the quiet restraint and crushing feel of their early recordings with the aural exploration and ornate experimentation of their later works (while incorporating their increasingly deep film and television scoring catalog). [A limited-edition yellow color vinyl pressing is available.]
- Flay – Mono CD/LP (Fuga)
- Flay (full name Kristine Flaherty) returns with her latest studio album Mono. The album features 15 all new songs including “Raw Raw”, “Shy” and “Punisher”, as well as “Irish Goodbye”, her collaboration with Vic Fuentes from Pierce The Veil. The album title Mono carries a special significance for K.Flay. It reflects her new sensory reality, as she experienced a sudden and complete hearing loss in her right ear due to a rare condition called SSNHL (Sudden Sensorineural Hearing Loss) and Labyrinthitis. Additionally, Mono serves as a testament to her sobriety, as she completed the album from start to finish while staying sober. [A limited-edition Coke bottle clear color vinyl pressing is available.]
Killer Mike – Michael CD/2xLP (Loma Vista)
Killer Mike’s Michael marks the celebrated MC’s first solo project since 2012’s critically lauded R.A.P. Music; and serves as an introduction to the totality of Michael Render, a lifelong rap fiend whose consciousness is steeped in the sounds of community that raised him – multiple eras of southern rap flows, Sunday church service, and barbershop discourse. [An indie store exclusive gold color vinyl pressing is available.]
Mayhem – Daemonic Rites CD/2xLP/2xLP+CD (Century Media)
Live album Daemonic Rites is a thrilling and intense listening experience that captures Mayhem’s energy and power on stage. The album features recordings from a variety of locations and venues, each with their own unique atmosphere and audience. Mayhem has played all over the world in the past few years, and Daemonic Rites captures the essence of their live performances in a way that few other albums can. The album features classic Mayhem tracks as well as newer material from their Daemon album, which was released in 2019. Fans can expect to hear blistering renditions of songs like “Freezing Moon”, “De Mysteriis Dom Sathanas”, and “Pure F***ing Armageddon”, among others. Overall, Daemonic Rites is a must-have for any Mayhem fan or anyone who loves intense, raw, and authentic live music.
Mitski – The Land Is Inhospitable And So We Are CD/LP/Cassette (Dead Oceans)
“This is my most American album,” Mitski says about her seventh record, and the music feels like a profound act of witnessing this country, in all its private sorrows and painful contradictions. In this album, which is sonically Mitski’s most expansive, epic, and wise, the songs seem to be introducing wounds and then actively healing them. Here, love is time- traveling to bless our tender days, like the light from a distant star. The Land Is Inhospitable And So We Are is full of the ache of the grown- up, seemingly mundane heartbreaks and joys that are often unsung but feel enormous. It’s a tiny epic. From the bottom of a glass to a driveway slushy with memory and snow, to a freight train barreling through the Midwest, and all the way to the moon, it feels like everything, and everyone, is crying out, screaming in pain, arching towards love. Love is that inhospitable land, beckoning us and then rejecting us. To love this place — this earth, this America, this body — takes active work. It might be impossible. The best things are. [An indie store exclusive ‘robin egg blue’ color vinyl featuring a postcard is available.]
Pretenders – Relentless CD/LP (Parlophone)
Arriving with the impulsiveness and attitude that at once defines the band’s eternal spirit, Relentless is a clearly defined snapshot of where the Pretenders are in 2023. It’s the second consecutive Pretenders album to be written as a collaboration between Chrissie Hynde and the band’s resident guitar hero, James Walbourne. Especially sought after in his own right, having recorded with Dave Gahan, Jerry Lee Lewis, and The Rails amongst many more. The album’s 12 tracks feature what Chrissie describes as “The Pretenders Collective.” This extended band features Walbourne (guitars), Kris Sonne (drums), Chris Hill (double bass), Dave Page (bass) and Carwyn Ellis (keyboards and guitars). Relentless also features a long hoped-for collaboration with the esteemed composer Jonny Greenwood (Radiohead, The Smile), who provides the string arrangement and conducted the 12 Ensemble for the album’s beautiful closing track, “I Think About You Daily”. [A limited-edition pink color vinyl pressing is available,]
Corinne Bailey Rae – Black Rainbows CD/2xLP (Black Rainbows Music)
Black Rainbows is a musical project inspired by the objects and artworks collected by Theaster Gates at the Stoney Island Arts Bank in Chicago. Situated at the Great Grand Crossing neighborhoods of Chicago’s South Side, Stoney Island Arts Bank is a cathedral to Black Art, a curated collection of Black archives comprising books, sculpture, records, furniture, and problematic objects from America’s past. As well as being a site for archive, the Arts bank is also a place for convening. Bailey Rae attended The Black Artists Retreat there in 2017 and performed in the space. Wide ranging in its themes, Black Rainbows‘ subjects are drawn from encounters with objects in the Arts Bank. Sonically, the album is a multi-genre mix of the progressive R&B, neo soul sound that will be familiar to fans, but it also contains rock, jazz and electronic elements. [An indie store exclusive opaque red color vinyl pressing is available.]
Joshua Redman – Where Are We CD/LP (Blue Note)
Acclaimed saxophonist Joshua Redman makes his Blue Note debut with Where Are We, his first-ever vocal project which features vocalist Gabrielle Cavassa, pianist Aaron Parks, bassist Joe Sanders, and drummer Brian Blade plus special guests Nicholas Payton on trumpet, Kurt Rosenwinkel on guitar, Peter Bernstein on guitar, and Joel Ross on vibraphone. At its core the album is both a celebration and critique of America—each song is about a specific geographical location in the United States—but it is also, to varying degrees, a ballads album, a standards album, an album of romantic longing, an album of social reflection, an album of melodic invention, and an album of improvisational adventure.
Brian Setzer – The Devil Always Collects CD/LP (Surfdog)
Creative sparks and killer riffs are flying everywhere on Brian Setzer’s new album The Devil Always Collects. The three-time Grammy award-winners guitar work is bracingly virtuosic and blazing on these 11 tracks, and his irresistible vocals deliver the clever storylines of catchy songs like “The Devil Always Collects”, “The Girl On The Billboard”, “Black Leather Jacket”, and “Rock Boys Rock”. Add in non-stop breakneck rhythms, and you have an album that stands with Setzer’s best. It’s always been Brian’s special talent to inject the roots of rock with a contemporary freshness that unites fans of rock, Americana, rockabilly, and punk. Although Brian has a 40-year career as a solo artist, leader of The Brian Setzer Orchestra and as a Stray Cat, he continues to play with vigor. [A limited-edition red color vinyl pressing is available.]
Teddy Swims – I’ve Tried Everything But Therapy (Part 1) CD (WB)

Corey Taylor – CMF2 CD/2xLP (BMG)
Uncompromising, unfiltered, and undeniable in any arena, Corey Taylor continues to impact culture as the frontman for both Grammy Award-winning multi-platinum juggernaut Slipknot and platinum rock force Stone Sour. 2023 sees Taylor following up his 2020 solo debut with CMF2 which finds him singing and playing lead and rhythm guitar, piano, and mandolin, and comes introduced by the electrifying new single “Beyond”. “My first solo album was kind of where I was coming from. This album is more where we’re going,” Taylor says. Jay Ruston, who produced Stone Sour’s 2017 Hydrograd LP as well as CMFT, returns for Taylor’s second solo effort. “Together we have great ideas, great energy, and are quick to try everything,” Taylor adds. “We’re not afraid to tell each other if it’s a good idea, or also a bad one; we have that kind of trust.” [An indie store exclusive neon violet color vinyl pressing is available.]
Thirty Seconds To Mars – It’s The End Of The World But It’s A Beautiful Day CD/LP (Concord)
Multi-platinum selling artist Thirty Seconds To Mars makes a triumphant return with their sixth studio album, It’s The End Of The World But It’s A Beautiful Day. The record heralds a new era for the band, one that not only explores the darker sides of the human experience but the hope as well, an arresting reminder that even in the face of seemingly impossible obstacles, there is still beauty to be found in the world. Featuring lead single “Stuck”. [An indie store exclusive tangerine orange color vinyl pressing with alternate cover and a 12″x12″ lithograph print is available.]
Vagabon – Sorry I Haven’t Called CD/LP (Nonesuch)
Sorry I Haven’t Called is the new album by Vagabon, the moniker of Lætitia Tamko. The album, co-produced by Tamko and Rostam (Vampire Weekend, Haim, Clairo), finds Tamko reinventing herself once again and features the most playful and adventurous music of her career. “I didn’t feel like being introspective,” says Laetitia Tamko of Sorry I Haven’t Called. “I just wanted to have fun.” Following her intimate 2017 debut Infinite Worlds, the New York artist favored expansive and evocative electronic textures in her breakthrough 2019 self-titled follow-up. But her latest LP feels like a wholly new era for Tamko, one that’s transformational and uncompromising. Across 12 vibrant tracks she wrote and produced primarily in Germany, she channels dance music and effervescent pop through her own confident sensibilities. [An indie store exclusive blue color vinyl pressing is available.]
The Who – Who’s Next [Reissue/1971] CD/2xCD/10xCD+Blu-ray Audio/LP/4xLP (IGA)
The Who’s 1971 album Who’s Next is regarded by many as their masterpiece – which says a lot considering the group’s legendary output. Originally, Pete Townshend intended these songs for the massive multimedia extravaganza, Lifehouse which was eventually abandoned. Producer Glyn Johns convinced Townshend and the Who to present the best of this material as a straightforward rock ‘n’ roll record and it resulted in some of the group’s most focused and powerful work ever produced. Bookended by the classics “Baba O’Riley” and “Won’t Get Fooled Again”, Who’s Next is one of the defining albums of ’70s hard rock from one of the greatest bands of all time. [A limited-edition single-disc Coke bottle clear vinyl pressing as well as Deluxe double-CD (Who’s Next / Life Houses) and four-LP (Who’s Next / San Francisco 1971] editions are available. Filled to the brim with new takes on classic songs we’ve known and loved for decades, this set of music continues to serve up the unmistakable trumpet playing of the Tijuana Brass master. Annexus Quam – Beziehungen [Reissue/1972] CD/LP (Ohr)
The seven-piece band Annexus Quam formed in 1967 as Ambition Of Music; they were what was then called a “beat group”. In 1970, working with a local trombone choir led to a dramatic change of direction. Trombone, clarinet, saxophone, scat-like vocals, various percussion, even a bicycle pump or a guitar played below the bridge found their way into the band. Annexus Quam, in a unique way, mixed two musical genres: rock and free jazz, but the group played both differently from what could be heard otherwise at that time. Elements of psychedelic rock with heavy organ sounds were combined with freely dabbed brass notes; at the same time the band was closer to Stockhausen’s concept of “Intuitive Music” than to the expressive group improvisations of free jazz musicians.
Atoll – Human Extract CD (Unique Leader)
New release from the Phoenix, Arizona-based extreme metal band. When asked about the creative inspiration behind the album, vocalist Wade Taylor shared: “We wanted to create a sonic experience that would engulf listeners in an eerie atmosphere, where the boundaries between reality and the unknown blur.”
Bahamas – Bootcut CD/LP (Republic)
Bahamas’ sixth full-length album, Bootcut, sees Afie Jurvanen lean into his (alt and old-time) country music influences. [An indie store exclusive green w/ smoke color vinyl pressing is available.]
Barenaked Ladies – In Flight CD/LP (Raisin Music)
In Flight, BNL’s 18th studio album, retains the dry wit and keen observation we expect from vocalist/guitarist Ed Robertson, bassist Jim Creeggan, keyboardist/guitarist Kevin Hearn and drummer Tyler Stewart, but adds a strong sense of maturing and lessons learned. There is also a sense of joy (which is exemplified in the first single, “Lovin’ Life”) and appreciation.
Baroness – Stone CD/2xCD/LP/Cassette (Abraxan Hymns)
The origins of Stone go back to 2020. It is not a pandemic record, but the core of it was written during its darkest days. Anxiety, relief, and resolve are stitched deeply throughout. Beck, Bogert & Appice – Live In Japan 1973, Live In London 1974 4xCD/4xLP (Rhino)
Before his death in January, legendary guitarist Jeff Beck revisited concert recordings made by Beck, Bogert and Appice, the power trio he formed in 1972 with drummer/singer Carmine Appice and bassist/singer Tim Bogert. The live music captures the band at the beginning and end of its short-but-influential partnership, with two shows in Japan in 1973 and one of the group’s final performances in London a year later. All three band members were involved in creating Live In Japan 1973, Live In London 1974, and this collection is dedicated to Beck and Bogert, who died in 2023 and 2021, respectively. The set includes an expansive booklet with extended liner notes detailing the group’s history by music journalist/manager Bruce Pilato, along with memorabilia, archival photos, and a replica poster.
Madison Beer – Silence Between Songs CD/LP (Epic)
Silence Between Songs is Madison Beer’s second major label full length release and a sonic departure from her previous efforts. In the artist’s own words, “this album is more of a memoir. It’s not really about one specific event, but more about specific things that have shaped me into the person that I am today.” Featuring the singles “Home To Another One”, “Dangerous”, “Reckless”, and “Showed Me (How I Fell In Love With You)”, a beautiful interpretation of the Turtles classic “You Showed Me”.

Danko Jones – Electric Sounds CD/LP (AFM)
Electric Sounds is the best proof that even a global pandemic couldn’t stop Danko Jones. From the chutzpah of opening track “Guess Who’s Back” and the muscular new-wave strut of “Good Time” to the title track’s promise of “smash a thousand guitars tonight!” and the edgy, squinty stomp and jolting bullseye of “Stiff Competition”’s chorus, Electric Sounds is a deceptively diverse affair. [Multiple vinyl colorways – including yellow and dark green – are available.]

After recordings were finished, they stayed at the studio and Lemmy picked up an acoustic guitar and started playing some of his old favorite songs by Johnny Cash, Buddy Holly, and Eddie Cochran. Mitski – The Land Is Inhospitable And So We Are CD/LP/Cassette (Dead Oceans)
“This is my most American album,” Mitski says about her seventh record, and the music feels like a profound act of witnessing this country, in all of its private sorrows and painful contradictions. From the bottom of a glass to a driveway slushy with memory and snow, to a freight train barreling through the Midwest, and all the way to the moon, it feels like everything, and everyone is crying out, screaming in pain, arching towards love. Love is that inhospitable land, beckoning us and then rejecting us. To love this place — this earth, this America, this body — takes active work. It might be impossible. The best things are. [An indie store exclusive ‘robin egg blue’ color vinyl featuring a postcard is available.]
Mondo Drag – Through The Hourglass CD/LP (Riding Easy)

With Bluegrass, Willie uncovers new truths in his own songs. [A limited-edition electric blue color vinyl pressing is available.]
Buffalo Nichols – The Fatalist CD/LP (Fat Possum)
On his second album, The Fatalist, Carl “Buffalo” Nichols does things with the blues that might catch you off guard. There’s 808 programming, chopped up Charley Patton samples, washes of synth. There’s a consideration of the fullness of the sonic stage and the atmospherics of the music that can only come with a long engagement with electronic music. But this is no gimmicky hybrid or attempt to turn the blues into 21st century music by simply dressing it with skittering hi-hats. Nichols’ vision for the blues is of a form of music that’s intimately tied to everyday life in 2023, something that’s reflected not only in the choice of instrumentation, but in the complexities of the songwriting and the gray areas his lyrics explore. This is music that comes straight from the present, and as such, it’s a reminder that the same shit that drove the first blues singers to pick up a guitar is still present behind the throbs of deep bass hits today.

So, when Western was born, I didn’t expect to be writing much. But immediately he was responding to music in a very intense way. Each morning I woke up with him around 6am and he and I would hang out on our own for a few hours while my wife slept and recovered from being up all night feeding him. Right away as I played guitar to him songs and music started coming to me.”

Jimmy Smith – Midnight Special [Reissue/1961] LP (Blue Note)
It’s a testament to Jimmy Smith’s volcanic creativity that the Hammond B3 organ firebrand recorded not one but two soul jazz classics – Midnight Special and Back At The Chicken Shack – in a single day when he entered Van Gelder Studio on April 25, 1960, with Stanley Turrentine on tenor saxophone, Kenny Burrell on guitar, and Donald Bailey on drums. Smith had been a self-taught pianist before abandoning the instrument in 1954 in favor of the organ, renting a Philadelphia warehouse, and woodshedding for a year until he emerged with a revolutionary style that immediately caught the ear Alfred Lion. The Blue Note boss dubbed him The Incredible Jimmy Smith and recorded the B3 innovator as frequently as he could between 1956-1963. Midnight Special opens with the soulful title track which chugs along at a laid-back pace giving ample space for Smith, Turrentine, and Burrell to state their case.

Saul Williams – Saul Williams [Reissue/2004] LP (Fader Label)
First establishing himself as an influential poet, then an award-winning screenwriter/actor, Saul Williams then went on to become an MC. His approach to MCing, though, wasn’t exactly in line with the traditional school of hip-hop. Ziúr – Eyeroll LP (Hakuna Kulala)
Ziúr’s palette had to evolve to match the scope of the project, but it was pure necessity that informed the album’s defining tone. Recording mostly at night, Ziúr was conscious of the noise she was making so developed a unique way to record organic percussion. Using a set of rototoms – low profile tunable drums – she scratched, scraped and gently tapped the skins to build up the undulating and unstable rhythmic backdrop for each track on Eyeroll.
Cassettes:
Baroness – Stone (Abraxan Hymns)
Brujeria – Esto Es (Nuclear Blast)
Brujeria makes the metal version of the corrido, a traditional Mexican song style built on storytelling. The narratives cover everything from history to daily life for outlaws. In Brujeria’s case, the narrator’s tales range from outright murder of the oppressor to drug deals gone wrong. On Esto Es, their blistering new platter, they spin stories about everything from being Party Boss to a first night in jail. Explosions In The Sky – End (Temporary Residence)
Mitski – The Land Is Inhospitable And So We Are (Dead Oceans)
“This is my most American album,” Mitski says about her seventh record, and the music feels like a profound act of witnessing this country, in all of its private sorrows and painful contradictions. From the bottom of a glass, to a driveway slushy with memory and snow, to a freight train barreling through the Midwest, and all the way to the moon, it feels like everything, and everyone, is crying out, screaming in pain, arching towards love. Love is that inhospitable land, beckoning us and then rejecting us. To love this place — this earth, this America, this body — takes active work. It might be impossible. The best things are.
