The Black Crowes – Happiness Bastards CD/LP (Silver Arrow)
The Black Crowes are leaving the bullshit of the past. 15 years after their last album of original music, the Robinson Brothers present Happiness Bastards – their 10th studio album. Some may say the project has been several tumultuous years in the making, but it’s arriving at just the right time. Call it brotherly love or destiny that brought them back together; the highly anticipated record consecrating the reunion of this legendary band just may be the thing that saves rock & roll. In a time where the art form is buried beneath the corporate sheen of its successors, The Black Crowes are biting back with the angst of words left unsaid penned on paper and electrified by guitar strings, revealing stripped, bare-boned rock & roll. No gloss, no glitter. [Two indie store exclusive editions are available: CD and 180gm clear vinyl.]
Gouge Away – Deep Sage CD/LP (Deathwish Inc.)
Deep Sage, Gouge Away’s third studio album, started coming together in 2019 during sound checks and in small pockets of downtime between tours. In early 2020, they demoed with Brok Mende in an unassuming storage unit in Orlando. They pulled influence not only from the nostalgia of the bands they grew up listening to but also developed the sense of urgency, noise, and introspective lyrics they felt most represented them. Those demos helped shape the songs into the finished record that Deep Sage would become. The album was recorded with Jack Shirley at Atomic Garden East in March 2023 completely analog and almost entirely live. Unpolished and far from being over-produced, this is what the heart of Gouge Away has always been. [Two color vinyl pressings are available: clear; and indie store exclusive black w/ blue.]
Kacey Musgraves – Deeper Well CD/LP (Interscope)
The music on Deeper Well, the seven-time Grammy winner’s fifth album, is almost chimeric. Rolling acoustic guitars, puffy clouds of strings and synth, warm bass punctuation, layered harmonies, moments of Celtic melody and plenty of room on the tracks for Musgraves’ silvery vocals. On the bright, almost folky title track, the 30-something songstress surveys her life and priorities, recognizing what feeds her, drains her and even examines the childhood she’s left behind on her way to now. Saturn returns, cardinals embody a dead friend, love is given and taken, streets rush by belongings are packed and old chapters deserted, new love blooms, jade bracelets serve as talismans, deep lessons emerge, small details define everything, the woods are a refuge and New York City serves as the same gleaming beacon as Oz. [Two indie store exclusive editions are available: translucent w/ splatter color vinyl; and a deluxe CD version with photo cards and lyric book. A cream color vinyl pressing is also available.]
Slow Hollows – Bullhead CD/LP (Danger Collective)
“My grandma calls stubborn people bullheaded, and it always stuck with me: I really relate to that term,” says Slow Hollows’ Austin Feinstein. After all, the 26-year-old Los Angeles songwriter has spent the past decade following his arrow, doggedly reinventing and honing his music across a diverse collection of LPs. 2015’s Atelophobia and 2016’s Romantic both explored the fringes of indie rock, and put Feinstein on Frank Ocean’s radar, who tapped him to sing the chorus of Blonde’s “Self Control.” 2019’s Actors saw the Slow Hollows palette expanding further, incorporating elements of R&B and dance music, and production contributions from Tyler, the Creator (whose records Feinstein has appeared on since 2016). Despite the breakthrough moment, Feinstein and co decided the project had run its course and announced that Slow Hollows was no more. Five years later, and it couldn’t be more fitting that the news of Slow Hollows return would come with his aptly titled fourth album, Bullhead.
The Snuts – Millennials CD/LP (Snuts Partnership)
The Snuts now have three albums under their belt, songs that attack subjects affecting the youth of today, and an arsenal of adoring fans up and down the country. As these four lads from Whitburn, West Lothian vowed four years ago, The Snuts wanted to be risky. And with Millennials, The Snuts have followed through on that promise. On their third album they’ve followed up, changed up and – fully, wholeheartedly, joyfully – revved up. Millennials is a sharp, snarling 10-track run of firecrackers. The result: a tight, taut, fat-free masterclass in songwriting and production. [An indie store exclusive yellow color vinyl pressing is available.]
Vltimas – Epic CD/LP (Season Of Mist)
Founded in 2015, Vltimas is a death metal powerhouse featuring David Vincent (Morbid Angel), Rune “Blasphemer” Eriksen (Mayhem) and Flo Mounier (Cryptopsy). “Vltimas boasts enviable chemistry. Blasphemer, Mounier, and Vincent were together in the same space when they wrote Epic. That really shows in the result. We imagine that the fact that Blasphemer and Mounier played together with Nader Sadek enhanced their rapport. Mounier’s aggressive drums are spot-on throughout Epic. Vincent’s concrete presence stands in beautiful juxtaposition to the otherworldly feeling of Blasphemer’s riffs. Vincent helps make Epic easily accessible to the metal masses.” – Jillian Drachman, Metal Insider

Atrophy – Asylum CD/LP (Massacre)
Asylum” is the next evolutionary step for Atrophy. Keeping the speed of Socialized Hate and the grooves of Violent By Nature, the album adds a big dose of heaviness to the mix resulting in a satisfying aural kick to the face. The lyrical focus is still focused on societal ills, from the insurrection to the brainwashing performed by the major news networks, and then also the obvious results from these on the people just struggling to live their lives. [A limited-edition red color vinyl pressing is available.]
The Black Crowes – Happiness Bastards CD/LP (Silver Arrow)
The Black Crowes are leaving the bullshit of the past. 15 years after their last album of original music, the Robinson Brothers present Happiness Bastards – their 10th studio album. Boeckner – Boeckner! CD/LP (Sub Pop)
Daniel Boeckner understands the grit and gravel that accumulates in the heart and that it takes an unwavering courage to crack through that clutter and burrow to the other side. And in Boeckner’s hands, that quest comes via post-apocalyptic synth and guitar heroism, a rallying cry for those always coming home through the scorched clouds. Throughout his work with Wolf Parade, Handsome Furs, Divine Fits, Operators, Atlas Strategic, and more, the iconic Canadian indie rocker recognizes that few feelings are more gratifying than hope. But it takes getting the hell out of your own way. Boeckner’s solo debut, Boeckner!, is the culmination of his deep library of musical reference. Produced by Randall Dunn (SunnO))), The Cave Singers, Earth) with help from drummer Matt Chamberlain (Pearl Jam, Fiona Apple), Boeckner! is filled with lively, catchy rock that calls to mind The Cars, David Bowie. Coil – Moon’s Milk (In Four Phases) 2xCD/3xLP (Dais)
Recorded primarily at their home studio in Chiswick, London on the eve of a permanent relocation to the small seaside town of Weston-super-Mare, the collection has long loomed as a pivotal and pinnacle work in the group’s discography, but has never been officially reissued, or repressed on vinyl. The Dais box set includes the entirety of the rare Moon’s Milk Bonus Disc CD-R / 2019 Threshold Archives CD, which includes three collaborations with Thighpaulsandra. This material is as rich and intoxicating as the previous four phases, ranging from electro-acoustic singing bowl rituals (“Copal”) to dissonant electronic recitations of visionary Angus MacLise poetry (“The Coppice Meat”) to ominous classical melancholia (“Bankside”). Once again, Coil confirms the vastness of their confounding, infinite alchemy, explored and refined across decades of experimentation – both sonic and bodily. Morbid Saint – Swallowed By Hell CD/LP (High Roller)
It’s quite a sensation that another Morbid Saint album is being released these days, more than 30 years after their second LP Destruction System was recorded but not finished until it’s official release recently. Max Roach – Newport Rebels [Reissue/1981] CD/LP (Candid)
In July of 1960, in protest of what they considered the failings of the jazz scene, and the accelerating commercialization of the annual Newport Jazz Festival, Charles Mingus and Max Roach staged their own “rebel” festival at nearby Cliff Walk Manner, RI. The rebels set up their own tents for sleeping, built their own stage, handled advertising, promotion, ticket taking and MC duties. By all accounts the concert was wholly inspired and a peaceful affair. Meanwhile, what was supposed to be an alternative festival turned out to be the only one in town. Unable to disperse an intoxicated mob of young people seeking access to the sold-out show at Freebody Park, the actual Newport Jazz Festival ended abruptly in a full-scale riot.

John Smith – The Living Kind CD/LP (Commoner)
“I listen to a lot of Metallica. James Hetfield is one of my favorite guitarists. I took his ‘down down up’ picking style and put it to a three-time jig feel, then practiced it for about ten years, before I could get my head around singing to it… but when the song was ready to come along, it did so in twenty minutes. It’s hard to get out of bed sometimes, and most days it’s almost impossible to see things clearly. Since I turned 40, I’ve felt that I’m starting to run out of time… but I’ve still got a lot of work to do. I wrote this song as a marker on the map. It’s good to want to be The Living Kind.”

The Snuts now have three albums under their belt, songs that attack subjects affecting the youth of today, and an arsenal of adoring fans up and down the country. Cousin Kula – Vitamin D LP (Rhythm Section Int’l)
Feeling like the first shot of sunshine after a long winter, Cousin Kula sounds instantly recognizable yet gloriously renewed on their second album Vitamin D. Crushed – Extra Life 12” (Ghostly Int’l)
Limited-edition ‘poisonbloom’ colorway. Los Angeles dream pop duo Crushed sign to Ghostly International with the first vinyl pressing of their 2023 debut EP, paired with remixes from Real Lies and DJ Python. Pulling from Britpop, trip-hop, and electronica, extra life is the band’s love letter to ’90s radio. Now they’ve tapped two favorites for their riffs on the sound. Known for mutations of “deep reggaetón,” DJ Python leans into the breakbeats and textures of “milksugar” for an even hazier, atmospheric feel. Extra life standout “waterlily” receives a rave-minded edit from Real Lies. The original crossed melancholic lyricism with dreamy drum breaks, and here the London dance duo enhances both, bumping the tempo into the red, adding their signature club prose overtop.

Morton Feldman’s last composition, Piano, Violin, Viola, Cello, was completed in 1987; although its instrumentation largely corresponds to that of Piano And String Quartet, with one instead of two violins, it differs in almost every other respect from the composition written only two years earlier, for here, in contrast to Piano And String Quartet, Feldman makes every effort to integrate the piano into the string section, and the basic formal components of the composition are no longer staves, as they were in Piano And String Quartet. Soulful R&B hooks, neo nü-metal bounce, prog-rock smarts, and active rock might swirl together in passionate ceremony, bridging the gap between the theatrical shimmer of The 1975 and the heavy syncopation of Meshuggah with energetic ease. Hints of classic funk, jazz-fusion, and modern pop-rock swagger weave between pulsating rhythmic punch and guitar driven riff rock, without a moment of incoherence. Issues have mastered the art of the mash-up, a genre unto themselves. [Two limited-edition colorways are available: pink; and black ice w/ white splatter.]

Keith Jarrett – Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach 2xLP (ECM)
Keith Jarrett’s account of Carl Philipp Emanuel Bach’s Württemberg Sonatas is a revelation. “I’d heard the sonatas played by harpsichordists, and felt there was room for a piano version,” says Jarrett today. This outstanding recording, made in 1994 and previously unreleased, finds the pianist attuned to the expressive implications of the sonatas in every moment. The younger Bach’s idiosyncrasies: the gentle playfulness of the music, the fondness for subtle and sudden tempo shifts, the extraordinary, rippling invention… all of this is wonderfully delivered. The fluidity of the whole performance has a quality that perhaps could be conveyed only by an artist of great improvisational skills. In Jarrett’s hands, CPE’s exploration of new compositional forms retains the freshness of discovery.
Jethro Tull – The Château D’Hérouville Sessions 2xLP (Rhino/Parlophone)

This 2xLP set contains the original 16 tracks mixed by Steven Wilson and a fourth side showing how a handful of recordings did get used on subsequent albums.

Marissa Nadler / Happy Rhodes – Where Do I Go 7” (Numero)
Ethereal dream gloom from a voice so unique they had to create an entirely new genre to contain all four octaves. The album’s tracklist is formed by different characters and story arcs from in and around the city. Is it a shared consciousness? Another planet? The next corporate wasteland? Heaven? Or somewhere else? Using the club as a focal point, it is easy to imagine the real-world meaning behind Dead Club City. Themes such as advertisement, unity, internet culture, the music industry, aging, and politics, as well as escapism and change are highlighted by the alienation or privilege of a members-only club.

Charlotte Sands – Can We Atart Over? LP (CS)
Blue marbled colorway. “This album is about the idea of beginning again. I’ve changed so much over the last few years personally and in my career and I love the concept of starting over as who I am now with the information and knowledge I’ve gained. It’s not about forgetting the past or regretting our choices, but more so letting go of the previous version of ourselves and meeting each other where we are at this moment in the phase that we’re currently in. For me, this album represents exactly that, standing firmly where i am as the person I am today.”

Xiu Xiu – La Forȇt [Reissue/2005] LP (5RC)
Repressed on vinyl for the first time in 15 years. As conceptual as Xiu Xiu’s fusion of post-punk, gamelan, synth pop, folk, and noise might seem, the group’s music never feels overly cerebral or detached. On the contrary, it’s usually brimming over with often contradictory emotions: love, hate, sex, violence, fear, and humor cling together so tightly in Jamie Stewart’s songs that they can’t be separated. Harsh and beautiful words and sounds remain intertwined on La Forȇt, which ranks among Xiu Xiu’s subtlest, and scariest, albums. Color vinyl pressing.
