Now, the Greek metal legends present their 14th studio album: Pro Xristou. Translating to “Before Christ” in Greek, this album is a fervent tribute to the last Pagan kings who stood resilient against the Christian tide, safeguarding ancient values and knowledge. Dive deep into the legacies of figures like Flavius Claudius Julianus and Nordic mythological kings through tracks such as “The Apostate” and “Ygdrassil”. Pro Xristou encapsulates the essence of Rotting Christ’s signature style – a melodic symphony with moments of unyielding harshness.

Bess Atwell – Light Sleeper CD/LP (Real Kind)
“You called yourself broken, but that’s just what people are, that’s how the light gets in,” sings Bess Atwell in the opening moments of Light Sleeper, before gentle hums of strings and shuffling snares make way for the Brighton singer’s voice at full pelt, singing with a newfound rawness. “Light Sleeper is about the willingness to feel,” the Brighton singer-songwriter explains. “Somewhere along the line I had become very afraid of feeling.” A huge part of this exploratory new era was Aaron Dessner, who produced Light Sleeper. His isolated cabin studio Long Pond, in Hudson Valley, was once Bess’ desktop background, but she never thought she would end up stargazing on its veranda and noodling away on the same instruments used by her heroes, not to mention a certain pop star… The immediate trust between the pair clicked the moment Atwell walked through the doors of the iconic recording space; Dessner showed her around and then promptly left her alone to play on the many instruments at the heart of her favorite The National songs. As Atwell puts it, they seemed to speak the same musical language.
Andrew Bird – Sunday Morning Put-On CD/LP (Loma Vista)
Inspired by a lifetime of listening to jazz and woodshedding, Andrew Bird on his new album Sunday Morning Put-On presents his take on the Great American Songbook. Andrew Bird Trio features Ted Poor (drums) and Alan Hampton (bass), and transcends nostalgia, pushing his limits as an improviser. Replacing saxophones with violin solos and showcasing Andrew’s signature vocal prowess, the trio reimagines jazz standards completely live in Southern California’s legendary Valentine Studios. Camouflage – Bodega Bohemia [Reissue/1993] 3xCD (Bureau B)
Founded in the southern German city of Bietigheim-Bissingen by Heiko Maile, Oliver Kreyssig, and Marcus Meyn in the year 1984, the band Camouflage scored an unexpected international hit with their debut album Voices & Images in 1988. Their sophomore album Methods Of Silence, released just a year later, was an even bigger success. Songs like “The Great Commandment” and “Love Is A Shield,” went on to become perennial classics of the synth pop genre. Heiko Maile and Marcus Meyn recorded their fourth album Bodega Bohemia in the synthsound studio of Belgian producer and electro-pop pioneer Dan Lacksman. It was released on April 26, 1993. To mark the 30th anniversary of the album, the band opened the archives to assemble a special bonus edition including a wealth of rare and unreleased recordings.

The Defects – Modern Error CD/LP (Mascot)
Defects aren’t here to mess around or waste time. On their storming debut album, Modern Error, they are the sound of a band energized by the thrill of running headlong toward their goal. Modern Error is, indeed, a record that smashes. With the heaviness and aggression of Lamb Of God and Machine Head, a Linkin Park-like sense of melody, and a touch of Bring Me The Horizon’s fearlessness in bringing in electronic elements and whatever else is needed to make a song truly explode, it’s an album that explodes with heavy energy, crafted by experts.
Travis Denning – Roads That Go Nowhere CD (Mercury Nashville)
Travis Denning, a native of Warner Robins, Georgia, singer/songwriter and Mercury Nashville recording artist, first made waves with the release of his Top 40 debut single “David Ashley Parker From Powder Springs” which has been certified Gold by the RIAA. [An indie store exclusive green color vinyl pressing is available.]
Elephant Gym – World CD/LP/Cassette (Topshelf)

Finom – Not God CD/LP (Joyful Noise)
Not God is the new album from Chicago’s beloved two-headed monster, Finom (fka Ohmme). You can ask them to go into more detail about the boring reasons why they changed their name, but for now, the answer is going to be polite refusal. No. Co-fronted by Sima Cunningham and Macie Stewart, Finom’s influences are vast and varied, and they put a premium on change. Produced by Jeff Tweedy in the Wilco Loft, Not God is a marvel of growth, a progression from the roots of this collaborative band whose history can be traced back to its improvised conception. This is owed in no small part to their hometown of Chicago, the life raft to so many persisters in musical adventurosity. That energy combined with Finom’s dramatic vocal and musical gifts puts them in the peripherals of the legacies cemented by The Roches, Roxy Music, the B52s, Kate Bush, Cate Le Bon, and Wilco. [A red color vinyl pressing is available.]
Gastr del Sol – We Have Dozens Of Titles 2xCD/3xLP (Drag City)
Nearly 25 years after disbanding, Gastr del Sol have unpacked their archive, stringing together an alternative view to their genre-melting 1993-1998 run. This assembly of previously uncollected studio recordings and beautifully captured unreleased live performances forms a spacious ode to the flux that was their métier; a further set of reinventions that continue to alter the way we hear music, and literally everything else.
Girl & Girl – Call A Doctor CD/LP (Sub Pop)
In one sense, it’s easy for artists-songwriters, specifically-to express their feelings in their work. After all, that’s what the lyrics are for! But it’s much harder to convey emotional energy in how you play, slash at the guitar, and the structure of the music itself. That’s precisely why Girl and Girl’s Sub Pop debut, Call A Doctor, feels like such a vital, electrifying shock to the senses. Not since the early work of Car Seat Headrest or Conor Oberst’s widescreen emotional brutality as Bright Eyes has indie rock managed to come across as this intimate and grandiose, as the Australian quartet led by Kai James lay a lifetime’s worth of woes-mental health, the human race’s planned obsolescence if you’ve been living on this cursed rock you know what we’re getting at-across a canvas of indie rock that feels both timeless and in-the-moment. [A white color vinyl pressing is available.]

Khanate – Capture & Release [Reissue/2006] CD/LP (Sacred Bones)
Khanate – Clean Hands Go Foul [Reissue/2009] CD/LP (Sacred Bones)
Largely recognized as their breakthrough album, Khanate was confident enough by the two-song, forty-minute Capture & Release (2005) to peel back its layers of thick mossy drone and reveal the minimalist underpinnings, a change either interpreted as maturity or an implied threat. “It’s a grim, avant-garde exercise in tension and paranoia. Dense, leaden drones fill up the spaces between O’Malley’s sparse, deeply sustained guitar chords. Vocalist Alan Dubin’s anguished vocals seem to convey the tortures of the damned as if there were not a shred of hope left for existence in this world. Clean Hands Go Foul (2009) generously offers more of everything: voluminous drones, clashing dissonance, mysterious subharmonic swells, escalating terror, and environments drenched in heavy anticipatory dread. The final hour of the band’s first decade sees Khanate, as always, making “music that, even in the realm of extreme music, is dark and distorted” (Pitchfork). Clean Hands Go Foul would be followed by the ultimate minimalism, as the Khanate entity sat shrouded in silence until the release of 2023’s To Be Cruel. [New colorways are available on vinyl: green; and gold nugget, respectively.]
Lenny Kravitz – Blue Electric Light CD/2xLP (BMG)
Timeless. Explosive. Romantic. Inspiring. How else to characterize Blue Electric Light, Lenny Kravitz’s 12th studio album? Kravitz’s mastery of deep-soul rock ‘n’ roll is a long-established fact. As a relentless creative force—musician, writer, producer, actor, author, designer—he continues to be a global dynamic presence throughout music, art, and culture. Blue Electric Light is an impassioned suite of songs, that broadens this distinction and is the latest contribution of a man whose music—not to mention his singular style—continues to inspire millions all over the world. On the album, Kravitz’s talents as a writer, producer and multi-instrumentalist resonate as he wrote and played most of the instruments himself, with longtime guitarist Craig Ross. [An indie store exclusive magenta and blue color vinyl pressing is available. Also available: a limited-edition picture disc vinyl version and a deluxe media book CD edition.]

The Opus song became the German language “Leben heißt Leben” and the English language “Opus Dei”. “The Great Seal” is the national anthem of the NSK State, the lyrics taken from Churchill’s “We shall fight on the beaches” speech. A new arrangement of the song appears on Laibach’s album Volk, with the title “NSK”.
La Luz – News Of The Universe CD/LP (Sub Pop)
“I was in a dream, but now I can see that change is the only law.” With a credo adapted from science fiction author Octavia E. Butler, an album title from a collection of metaphysical poetry, and an expansion in consciousness brought on by personal crisis, guitarist and songwriter Shana Cleveland learns to embrace a changing world with unconditional love on News Of The Universe, the new full-length from California rock band La Luz. News Of The Universe is a record born of calamity, a work of dark, beautiful psychedelia reflecting Cleveland’s experience of having her world blown apart by a breast cancer diagnosis just two years after the birth of her son. It’s also a portrait of a band in flux, marking the first appearance for drummer Audrey Johnson and the final ones from longtime members bassist Lena Simon and keyboardist Alice Sandahl, whose contributions add a bittersweet edge to a record that is both elegy for an old world and cosmic road map to a strange new one. [An orange crush color vinyl pressing is available.]

John Mulaney – Baby J CD/2xLP (Drag City)
The Emmy-winning Comeback Kid himself comes back yet again with a blunt, brilliantly quotable stand-up special. Baby J takes the form of a wide-ranging conversation between John Mulaney, a kid in the balcony named Henry, and the rest of the sold-out crowd at Boston’s Symphony Hall. John dominates the chat, of course – nobody would want it otherwise – but his cautionary tales might be a little TOO hilarious.

Muslimgauze – Betrayal [Reissue/1993] CD/3xLP (I Shall Sing Until My Land Is Free)
Originally issued in 1993 by Staalplaat adorned with the epithet “Dedicated to a united Arab response”, the 11-part Betrayal is reissued here in its entirety, which should acutely pique interests of those into the likes of Christian Love Forum, for its heavy stylistic bias toward a strain of hypnotic atmospheres and serpentine steppers’ rhythms. Ostensibly instrumental, save for the Arabic voices sampled and used texturally, not literally, within its shadowy matrices, the album sits firmly in a prized vein of Bryn Jones’ work, beloved for its atmospheric pressure rather than noise scuzz.
Myrkur – Ragnarok [OST] CD/LP (Relapse)

In This Light is the new full-length album by Principe Valiente and it signifies a bold evolution in the band’s decade-plus journey. The 10 meticulously crafted songs unveil the signature ethereal soundscape and dark ambient allure – elements that originally catapulted them onto the alternative scene back in 2011 with the release of their self-titled debut album. Immerse yourself in a symphony of mellotrons, samplers, and analog synths, harmonizing with the celestial resonance of Jimmy Ottosson’s Rickenbacker 12-string and Gretsch guitars, accompanied by the melodic piano, the distorted signature driving bass, all enveloped in the enigmatic vocals of singer Fernando Honorato.

This Week’s Vinyl Exclusives:
Aluminum – Fully Beat LP (Felte)
Blue colorway. The relatively short life of San Francisco’s Aluminum has so far yielded a single (“Spinning Backwards”, 2020) and an EP (Windowpane, 2022), but their debut LP, Fully Beat, overflows with tenured confidence and a singular style that deftly comprises shoegaze, big beat, and jangle pop. With influences ranging from Orbital, to Wipers, to The Avalanches and Sly and the Family Stone, theirs is a multifaceted take on established forms, fed through fuzz and led by honeyed, male-female vocal harmonies from Bay Area post-punk veterans Marc Leyda (of Wild Moth) and Ryann Gonsalves (of Torrey).

The result O, Brittle Weather! is a thoughtful, probing album that explores a cacophony of sounds in a playful and whimsical way. The album feels like a telling of a great story- songs like pages colored with splashes of acoustic and electric guitars, floating bass, keys, horns, and percussion that ranges from a whole kit to a single tambourine that succinctly cues up the next chapter. Narrated by melodic vocals belting out emotional poetry, O, Brittle Weather! seems to plead with you to keep listening until the last word. Then, it begs you to listen again.

While continuing the theme of the previous album Protein Love, Fusion Of 80’s City Pop and 2000’s Hip-Hop/R & B, this album also shows an approach to the modern beat scene. The album is composed of melodious and catchy melodies that only Dr. Flex, who has evolved even further, can produce.
Duke Ellington and Johnny Hodges – Play The Blues [Reissue/1959] LP (Verve)
Several times in his career, star alto-saxophone soloist Johnny Hodges struck out on his own, only to return each time to Duke Ellington’s band. Critic Michael Ullman suggested that the blues classics chosen for this program may have been neutral ground, where Ellington’s playing could come to the fore and Hodges’ irrepressible sensuality could have free rein. This is one of the very best small-group records Ellington ever made – a perfectly integrated set of music that truly swings the blues.
Brian Eno / Holger Czukay / Peter J. Schwalm – Sushi. Roti. Reibekuchen 2xLP (Goenland)
A little-known performance given by Brian Eno, Holger Czukay & J. Peter Schwalm, in which they were accompanied by Raoul Walton and Jern Atai, members of Schwalm’s group, Slop Shop. Billed as a “High-Altitude-Food-Performance with Incidental Music by Slop Shop and Brian Eno”, with Can co-founder Czukay’s appearance kept under wraps in advance, it was recorded on August 27, 1998 outside the Kunst-und Ausstellungshalle der Bundesrepublik Deutschland – the Art and Exhibition Hall of the Federal Republic of Germany – in Bonn, Germany, at the opening party for an exhibition of Eno’s Future Light-Lounge Proposal multimedia installation.
Freedom – Stay Free LP (Wild Kingdom)
Freedom is deeply rooted in the working-class rock of the ‘70s and ‘80s, giving us a sound like no other. With meaningful lyrics, power chords and mighty choruses, they’re inevitably creating a soundtrack to the journey of life itself. Nicke Andersson once described Freedom as a “bargain basement Springsteen” – a band making music meant to follow you through thick and thin, far into those never-ending summer nights. Since Freedom first started in 2019, they’ve established themselves as an amazing live act, filling clubs throughout Sweden with both energy and audience. [A yellow colorway is available.]

Havok – Conformicide [Reissue/2017] 2xLP (Brutal Planet)
Blue colorway. From start to finish, Conformicide is a fantastic beast of an album that shreds and thrashes like an angry, rabid beast with ten unstoppable tracks (plus two bonus tracks) that are drenched in politically charged lyrics, wicked, ear-shattering vocals, along with ferocious, speaker shredding, ear-piercing, thrash-induced riffs and killer, blazing, shredding leads and solos, slap-heavy, eye-popping, funky, pounding bass lines, and storming, heart-pounding, ripping technical double bass drumming all throughout each song.

Morgan formed the Hydromatics alongside Nicke Royale (The Hellacopters) and guitarist Tony Slug (Loveslug) in 1998 and released an awesome debut album in ’99 called Parts Unknown that revisited the Motor City rock sounds of yesteryear in the form of a modern-day power punk rawk outfit, which is now finally being reissued.

Orange colorway. Through his project Lionlimb, New York-based singer/songwriter/producer Stewart Bronaugh crafts unfurling soundscapes that feel mysterious and otherworldly, yet timeless and nostalgic at the same time. He presents his most ambitious vision of these inner vistas on his new album, Limbo. Inspired by a palette of ’70s Italian film soundtracks, ’60s girl group music, and funk and soul ballads, Bronaugh brings these influences together to invent an immersive sound all his own-with help from close collaborator Joshua Jaeger, whose live drums bring a rawness to Limbo’s meticulously layered production.

The record builds on the themes of reflection, this time a letter to his teenage self as he set out making music. The album deftly switches across hip hop, soul, UKG, liquid drum and bass, footwork, R&B, maximalist electronica, and abstract jazz beats.
The Meters – Now Playing LP (WB)
The Meters defined New Orleans funk, not only on their own recordings, but also as the backing band for numerous artists, including many produced by Allen Toussaint. Where the funk of Sly Stone and James Brown was wild, careening, and determinedly urban, The Meters were down-home and earthy. Nearly all their own recordings were instrumentals, putting the emphasis on the organic and complex rhythms. The syncopated, layered percussion intertwined with the gritty grooves of the guitar and organ, creating a distinctive sound that earned a small, devoted cult during the ’70s, including musicians like Paul McCartney and Robert Palmer, both of whom used the group as a backing band for recording. Despite their reputation as an extraordinary live band, The Meters never broke into the mainstream, but their sound provided the basis for much of the funk and hip-hop of the ’80s and ’90s.
Metro Station – Metro Station [Reissue/2007] LP (Field Day)
Two colorways: neon pink; and clear. As is often the case in Metro Station’s hometown of Hollywood, CA, the emo-pop outfit owed it’s formation to a handful of well-placed connections. Co-frontman Trace Cyrus was the stepson of country star Billy Ray Cyrus, and his half-sister, Miley Cyrus, played the title character on Disney’s Hannah Montana before launching her own music career. Similarly, singer Mason Musso’s younger brother played the role of Oliver Oken in Hannah Montana, and the two older-sibling musicians met at the urging of their respective mothers. After adding keyboardist Blake Healy to the lineup, the trio recorded a single – the teenage anthem “Seventeen Forever” – and watched as the song created a stir on MySpace.com. The group’s Internet presence also attracted the attention of Anthony Improgo, who joined the group on drums. Now featuring a full lineup, Metro Station began playing shows in the L.A. area. The good luck didn’t last long, though; by the end of 2009, the group had slimmed itself down to a duo, and Metro Station officially called it quits in March 2010.
Mortician – Darkest Day Of Horror [Reissue/2003] LP (Relapse)

Heinous horror-lords Mortician reanimate the golden age of low-budget splatter, hammering home gruesome anti-music. Darkest Day of Horror is pure sonic zombification as terror-filled atmospheres, hyperspeed rhythms, subterranean blower bass and neanderthal-like vocals annihilate with no concern for subtlety or musical nuance.
mui zyu – nothing or something to die for LP (Father/Daughter)

Unleashed on New Year’s Eve of 2006 in Portland, Oregon, Red Fang stormed out of the gates, introducing a sweaty, seething basement to a new kind of unforgettable fist-pumping, beer-chugging rock music.

The first album after these changes was Twist Of Shadows. Released in 1989 and produced by Peter Walsh (of Simple Minds fame), the album added a crystalline sheen to the still gothic-tinged music.
