Black Twig Pickers – Rough Carpenters CD/LP+MP3 (Thrill Jockey)

Rough Carpenters, which was recorded in the same two-day session as 2012’s Whompyjawed EP, can be seen as an inward-gazing foil to that EP’s long-form hoedown epics. With the addition of Sally Anne Morgan on fiddle to the trio of Mike Gangloff, Isak Howell, and Nathan Bowles, dance has become a more prominent part of the group’s formula. The Black Twig Pickers are indeed rough carpenters, building unpolished but finely crafted records that embody the spirit of a timeless old-time scene.

Peter Brotzmann – Long Story Short 5xCD (Trost)

Five-disc set of 18 performances highlighting the musical scope of the German free jazz saxophonist, compiled from the Unlimited Festival, Wels, Austria. This extensive compilation emphasizes the vitality and variety of his current work, encompassing a wide range of his comrades and collaborators such as Paal Nilssen-Love, Mats Gustafsson, Bill Laswell, Masahiko Satoh, and Ken Vandermark.

Buckcherry – Confessions CD/CD+DVD (Century Media)

Available in Regular and Deluxe editions. Deluxe includes two additional audio tracks plus a bonus DVD. Confessions is a loose concept album that revolves around the notion of the seven deadly sins and is inspired by events in singer Josh Todd’s childhood. Todd said that Confessions is “definitely a heavier, musically, record than we’ve ever had, and more melodic.”

Allman Brothers Band – Nassau Coliseum, Uniondale, NY 5/1/73 2xCD (Allman Brothers Band)
Allman Brothers Band’s 2/11/72 set at Macon City Auditorium featured the unified front that was the five-man version of the band as it gamely carried on following the loss of Duane Allman. Their 5/1/73 show at Nassau Coliseum in Uniondale, NY marked a much different line-up for the Allman Brothers Band. Keyboardist Chuck Leavell (who would later go on to The Rolling Stones) had joined the group in mid-1972 just before founding bassist Berry Oakley’s untimely death. Jaimoe’s childhood friend Lamar Williams was chosen to replace Berry Oakley six months prior to the Nassau recording.
