Bonehunter – Sexual Panic Human Machine CD/LP (Hell’s Headbangers)
Second album from the Finnish thrash/punk/black metal trio.
Tyler Childers – Purgatory CD/LP (Hickman Holler)
Like many great Southern storytellers, singer-songwriter Tyler Childers has fallen in love with a place. The people, landmarks and legendary moments from his childhood home of Lawrence County, Kentucky populate the ten songs on his formidable debut, Purgatory, an album that’s simultaneously modern and as ancient as the Appalachian Mountains in which events unfold. The album, co-produced by Grammy Award winners Sturgill Simpson and David Ferguson, is a semi-autobiographical sketch of Childers’ growth from wayward youth to happily married man, told in the tradition of a Southern gothic novel with a classic noir antihero who may just be irredeemable. Purgatory is a chiaroscuro painting with darkness framing light in high relief. There’s catharsis and redemption. Sin and temptation. Murder and deceit. Demons and angels. Moonshine and cocaine. So much moonshine and cocaine. All played out on the large, colorful canvas of Eastern Kentucky.
Coldplay – Kaleidoscope CDEP/12”+MP3 (Parlophone)

Features a stellar line up of musicians including Gilberto Gil, Arthur Verocai, Dominguinhos, and Tenorio Jr.
Dale Crover – The Fickle Finger Of Fate CD/LP (Joyful Noise)
Debut solo album from the enigmatic legend that is Dale Crover. Amongst his 30+ year career as one half of the essential Melvins roster, Crover has contributed to countless albums ranging from platinum-plated classics (ahem, Nirvana) to seminal cult LPs. Though consistently otherworldly, The Fickle Finger Of Fate is surprisingly approachable— dare we say, catchy. But even at its most anthemic, you won’t be able to shake the feeling that a sinister ambience is hovering just beneath the surface.
Dead Cross – Dead Cross CD/LP (Ipecac)
Dead Cross emerged out of a series of impractical schemes, fallen-through plans, and last-minute musical experimentation. Shows were scheduled before a single song was written, fans were formed before even one show was played. The chaos of its creation seems apt; after all, the band is comprised entirely of artists who have thrived playing tightly-coiled turmoil – intelligent dissonance disguised as disorder. Consisting of Dave Lombardo, Justin Pearson, Michael Crain, and Mike Patton, the impressive, expansive, and eclectic list of prior bands collectively played in would be enough to ensure the unyielding ferocity of the music… but a resume isn’t necessary, here. Dead Cross stands on its own, speaks volumes with its multilayered evil-genius vocals, manic guitar riffs, and brutal rhythms. [Limited red colored vinyl pressing also available.]

Briana Marela – Call It Love CD/LP+MP3 (Jagjaguwar)
There is something unforgettable about great love songs, and Briana Marela’s Call It Love wraps its welcoming arms around the subject, invoking all its complexity. Marela’s original vision for this album was to dig into the two poles of her songwriting styles: her ambient, ethereal side and her brighter, beat-driven pop leanings.

Naomi Punk – Yellow CD/2xLP+MP3 (Captured Tracks)
Abrasive, grungy noise band Naomi Punk are back with their latest album. “Definitely not your average punk posturing, Naomi Punk are messing with original formats in genuinely intriguing ways here, full of detuning guitars and melted, off-beat rhythms, but still with that innovative, eat-yourself gnash that made punk rock what it was.” — Boomkat
Randy Newman – Dark Matter CD (Nonesuch)
Dark Matter, Randy Newman’s first album of new material in nine years, is the follow-up to 2008’s acclaimed Harps And Angels, which the Guardian called “the work of a true master of popular song.” Produced by long-time Newman collaborators Mitchell Froom, Lenny Waronker, and David Boucher, Dark Matter includes songs about Vladimir Putin, the Kennedy brothers, Sonny Boy Williamson, science vs. religion, love and loss, and more. [Vinyl edition due August 18.]
Elijah Ocean – Elijah Ocean CD (New Wheel Music)
“It’s twenty-seventeen in the southwestern corner of America. There’s snow in the distant mountains and the slow desert sunset creeps through the windshield of the Mercury on 40 West. The young man is driving home, wherever that is. Every year Elijah Ocean crisscrosses the country singing his songs and making memories.”
Monk Parker – Crown Of Sparrows CD/LP (Grand Jury)
Monk Parker’s ((The Low Lows, Parker & Lily) new album is both majestic and feral, it’s tension hidden beneath a scratched-surface warmth, a woozy country narcosis, with layers of feedback trembling just at the edge of earshot. It’s a dense, funereal sound evocative of Townes Van Zandt at his least folksy and most heroin-saturated. Stately, off-kilter dreamlike waltzes a la Richard Hawley or M. Ward build to explosive, gospel-tinged climaxes, and a woozy country narcosis kin to early My Morning Jacket or Phosphorescent alternates with feedback drones and buried noise melodies.
The Rain Parade – Emergency Third Rail Power Trip/Explosions In The Glass Palace [Reissue/1983/1984] CD (Real Gone Music)
Of all the albums that emerged from L.A.’s Paisley Underground scene, Rain Parade’s Emergency Third Rail Power Trip and its follow-up EP, Explosions In The Glass Palace, were probably the most transparent in their influences and probably the most successful in transcending them. Here was the jangle-rock of the Byrds married with the soft, downbeat vocal harmonies of early Pink Floyd, infused with a Love-like delicacy—yet the dark lyrical themes and droning twin guitar melodies made listening to Rain Parade like being on an acid trip teetering on the knife edge between pure nirvana and colossal bummer.
Jimmy Reed – Mr. Luck: The Complete Vee Jay Singles 3xCD (Craft Recordings)
Jimmy Reed’s lazy drawl, high harmonica sound, and tightly constructed blues songs are part of the bedrock of American roots music. For a decade in the late 1950s and early 1960s, he was the most popular blues artist in America, crossing over to the pop charts with songs like “Big Boss Man” and “Baby What You Want Me To Do.” Blues, country and R&B artists, including Neil Young, The Rolling Stones, Etta James and Elvis Presley, have covered his compositions. Here are his complete Vee Jay singles-his defining body of work-newly remastered with notes from Grammy-winning blues producer Scott Billington.

Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band – Lay It On Down CD/LP (Concord)
The 10 original songs on the Kenny Wayne Shepherd Band’s hard-hitting new release Lay It On Down explore some vital new creative territory while embodying the same raw, rootsy musicality that’s been a common thread in the nine acclaimed albums that Shepherd’s released since he first emerged as a teenaged guitar wunderkind nearly a quarter-century ago. “I wanted to touch on all of the different musical influences that I’ve had over the years,” Shepherd says. “With solid grooves, strong lyrics, good stories and a lot of different sonic textures.” Shepherd’s deeply expressive songwriting and fiery, forceful playing are in abundant supply throughout the album. Such tunes as the insistently catchy, R&B-inflected “Diamonds & Gold,” the raucous rocker “Baby Got Gone,” the stately country ballad “Hard Lesson Learned,” the slyly humorous “She’s $$$” and the sensitive, bittersweet title track find Shepherd and band – longtime vocalist Noah Hunt, drummer Chris “Whipper” Layton (renowned for his prior work with Stevie Ray Vaughan and Double Trouble), veteran bassist Kevin McCormick and keyboardist Jimmy McGorman – delivering a memorable mix of smart songcraft and blues-steeped instrumental intensity.
Soccer Mommy – Collection CD/LP (Fat Possum)
Soccer Mommy is the project of Sophie Allison, a 19-year-old Nashville native and musical wunderkind. Sophie built her reputation as a DIY artist, recording her own songs and releasing them for free on Bandcamp over the last few years. Collection compiles the best of Sophie’s Bandcamp work as well as a few new songs, written, mixed and produced herself. The songs portray an artist fully-formed, mature far beyond her age singing about toxic relationships, infatuations, and all the experiences of being a teenage girl. Or, as Sophie describes her subject matter, “crush stuff with a hint of bad to it.” There’s a playfulness to the music that belies the sophisticated nature of the songcraft. The songs can be sweet, they can be happily melancholic or melancholically happy, but they always cut deep. They belong on playlists and mixes, to be shared among friends and belted out during road trips. These perfect pop gems have power.
Tyshawn Sorey – Verisimiltude CD (Pi Recordings)

Spencer & Rains – The Skeleton Keys CD (Old Time Tiki Parlour)
Seventeen tracks of old time music, each song collaboratively illustrated by Spencer & Rains in a full color, 40-page book, bound in a beautiful, 7.25 x5.5 letter press cover. “Your music gives me hope for humanity” (Robert Crumb). “Tricia Spencer s own deep family fiddling roots and Howard Rains’ passion for saving old Texas music from extinction come together in this beautiful collection of tunes, songs and paintings. I immediately had the feeling of being invited into something very musically personal and special. Strong harmonies and nice, tight playing… a fabulous project” (Bruce Molsky).
Svartsyn – In Death CD (Agonia)
New album of dark, grim and misanthropic black metal from Sweden.
George Thorogood – Party Of One CD/LP (Rounder)
Party Of One is George Thorogood’s first solo album of his 40+ year career, and is a tribute to the artists that shaped his musical consciousness. Produced by Grammy-winner Jim Gaines – known for his work with John Lee Hooker, Luther Allison and Stevie Ray Vaughan, as well as several of Thorogood’s biggest discs – the 14 cuts (plus a bonus CD-only track) are a potent platter of traditional blues, classics, and modern blues benchmarks. The album sees Thorogood covering blues masters such as Robert Johnson, John Lee Hooker, and Elmore James, as well as other legends, including The Rolling Stones, Johnny Cash, and Bob Dylan. The primarily acoustic instrumentation – including slide, Dobro, and harmonica – is performed entirely by Thorogood live in the studio with minimal overdubs. As Thorogood himself says, “This record is what I was, what I am, and what I always will be.”
