Nick Garrie – The Moon & The Village CD/LP+CD (Tapete)
“One of the great names of long-forgotten, out-of-print psych folk is back with a new record. Nick Garrie, the Yorkshire troubadour whose uber-rare 1969 debut The Nightmare Of JB Stanislas is one of the most sought-after original presses in British music, has been experiencing a gradual (re-)integration into the collective consciousness for some ten years, ranging from reissues, festivals and hipster endorsements to a brand new album in 2009, 49 Arlington Gardens. Now comes Garrie’s third full-length collection of songs, recorded with Elephant Six alumnus Gary Olson.” [8/10] – Loud And Quiet
Andy Grammer – The Good Parts CD (S-Curve)
Third album from the country pop singer/songwriter.
Hypnotic Brass Ensemble – Book Of Sound CD (Honest Jon’s)
With its cathedral-like, richly resonant acoustics, Book Of Sound is a brilliant expression of this interplanetary principle. The album is by turns urgent and contemplative, funky and reflective, varied in its textures; but entirely of one piece. Underpinned by concepts of earth’s place in the cosmos, held in place by meditation, swirling with notions of history, science, theology, ancestry, there is a rich conceptual brew here.
Irreversible Entanglements – Irreversible Entanglements CD/LP (International Anthem)
Irreversible Entanglements is a liberation-oriented free jazz collective formed in early 2015 by saxophonist Keir Neuringer, poet Camae Ayewa (aka Moor Mother) and bassist Luke Stewart, who came together to perform at a Musicians Against Police Brutality event organized after the slaying of Akai Gurley by the NYPD. Months later the group added trumpeter Aquiles Navarro and drummer Tcheser Holmes (a duo who also performed at the MAPB event) for a single day of recording at Seizure’s Palace in Brooklyn, and the full quintet’s first time playing together was captured for this debut.
Darius Koski – What Was Once Is By And Gone CD/LP (Fat Wreck Chords)
For nearly three decades Darius Koski has built an impressive body of work as a member of the Swingin’ Utters and Filthy Thieving Bastards, as well as launching a solo career a couple years back with Sisu. And now, he’s adding to that canon with What Was Once Is By And Gone, his second solo record. Where Sisu dripped with Koski’s Americana influences, What Was Once Is By And Gone is an even more eclectic batch. You can see the mark of such artists as The Kinks, Leonard Cohen, and even the dark, unsettling works of Nick Cave present this time around.

Across Versatile’s 16 tracks, Van interprets some of the very building blocks of modern music in his own utterly unique style. As well as songs originally made famous by the likes of Chet Baker, Frank Sinatra, The Righteous Brothers, Tony Bennett and Nat King Cole, Versatile features six new Van compositions, including “Broken Record” – a timeless piece of late-night swing.

Prettiest Eyes – Pools CD/LP (Castle Face)
“They are captivating, they are odd, they make strange and interesting choices. Futuristic and yet drawn from the same sonic sludge that all mankind derives from, they live and breathe early Los Angeles-punk vibes while still innovating at every turn. There is electricity in this sound, they simply rule and what a pleasure to hear Pools doesn’t stray far from what makes them just melt it in person. Recorded perfectly to harness the animal on a nice inanimate slab of plastic you can take home. For fans of Screamers, Suicide, Chrome, and yes, a hint of a down unda Birthday Party.” – John Dwyer

Tony, Caro, and John – All On The First Day [Reissue/1972] CD/LP+CD (Tapete)
Tony & Caro’s voices are the leading hand through the group’s nomadic and shifting song-scape; singing tales of love, youth, and political confusion at a time when the very concept of personal identity was expanding beyond anything it had ever been in prior. While contemporaries such as The Incredible String Band, The Pentangle, and Pearls Before Swine were garnering international recognition and categorization at that time; Tony, Caro, and John evaded being confined to any particular set of expectations or aesthetics. Their songs move fluidly between ballads, protest songs, experimental storytelling, and free-flowing group jams.
Otto A. Totland – _-_ The Lost CD/LP (Sonic Pieces)
A beautiful album of solo piano works from one half of Deaf Center. “Concerned with ‘the constant movement towards fast paced, polluted lives,’ the pianist offers an aural contrast: personal, meditative, and sparse. The beauty of Totland’s solo compositions first became apparent on Pinô back in the winter of 2014; the follow-up possesses a similar beauty. We are the lost; how will we slow down?” – A Closer Listen

Vono – Dinner Für 2 [Reissue/1982] CD/LP (Bureau B)
Among the lesser known dark-electro/post-punk bands of the early 1980s, the Berlin duo Vono really stood out. The radical nature of their music, the cold sound and sparse lyrics — Vono were arguably on a par with the more prominent ambassadors of the genres (Deutsch Amerikanische Freundschaft, Liaisons Dangereuses, etc.). With echoes of Air, Bjork, Tame Impala, and Gary Numan, the band refers to its infections brand of new-wave electro-pop as Turbo Chill. Rather than shouting in a rock voice, on Change Wilson gets to experiment with more emotional, subtle vocalizations, crooning and whispering over swirls of subtle psychedelia, Quincy Jones-era strings, and pulsing synths.
Neil Young + Promise Of The Real – The Visitor CD/LP (Reprise)
When Neil Young entered Shangri La Studio with the band Promise Of The Real a few months ago, there were a lot of images and feelings careening around his soul. By the end of the recording sessions, he knew he’d made his most diverse album going all the way back to Harvest in 1972, when America was also in the throes of becoming unhinged. Neil Young didn’t blink then, and he is not blinking now.

The denser sound of “Bells” shows Ayler moving towards the bigger sonic statement made on Spirits Rejoice, his September 23, 1965, Judson Hall session. “Bells” as heard here is not, in fact, a single composition; rather, it is a medley moving from “Holy Ghost” to an unnamed theme and then into “Bells” proper. Robert Earl Keen – No. 2 Live Dinner [1996] LP (Dualtone)
First-time vinyl edition. Having signed his first major-label contract with Arista Texas, Robert Earl Keen Jr. said good-bye to Sugar Hill Records with 1996’s No. 2 Live Dinner, a concert recording that sums up his eight years and five earlier albums with the company. Keen has a gift for concocting musical stories that bring Texas to life in all its violent, sad, expansive, absurdist glory. His voice is still a ramshackle wreck, but he has learned how to minimize his melodic weaknesses while maximizing his storytelling strengths.

The production elevates the lyricism and is unique from track to track, supplied with the backdrop of varying samples, harp, flute, keys, guitar, electric bass, violin, synth, and many other instrumental elements. It’s an adventurous travel from beginning to end, finding abstract connectivity through the philosophical lens, allowing for alteration of perception and the passage of openness.
Anaïs Mitchell – Young Man In America [2012] LP (Wilderland)
Anaïs Mitchell & Jefferson Hamer – Child Ballads [Reissue/2013] LP (Wilderland)
Anaïs Mitchell is not a man. She’s a woman so it may catch a few listeners off-guard when Mitchell cries out, in the opening sequence of 2012’s Young Man In America. “I’m a young man!” And it may come as a surprise when, over the course of eleven songs, she seems to be channeling spirits from the Old Testament to modern America – but mostly, well, from the Y chromosome. “Child Ballads is a deceptively wispy collection of old English and Scottish folk songs, a collaboration sprouted a few years ago when Mitchell and Hamer discovered their shared fascination with the British folk canon established by a Harvard professor in the late 1800s.” – Pitchfork
Ennio Morricone – Death Rides A Horse (Da Uomo A Uomo) [OST/1967] LP (Dagored)
The soundtrack for this 1967 epic western movie featuring the great Lee Van Cleef bears the signature of Ennio Morricone: Guitars, flute, piano, timpani, drums and a Native-American choir style make this motion picture a kind of original masterpiece in the maestro’s oeuvre.
Ennio Morricone – Veruschka – Poesia Di Una Donna [OST/1971] LP (Dagored)
Limited picture disc vinyl reissue of Morricone’s soundtrack for the 1971 documentary about the legendary world’s first supermodel Veruschka von Lehndorff – a real ’60s/’70s icon that starred in several cult movies including Blow Up (1966), Salomé (1972) and Coleur Chair (1978).
Anne Murray – The Ultimate Collection 2xLP (UMe)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. 20 tracks handpicked by Anne herself — top hits from her career including duets with Bryan Adams, Glen Campbell and Micheal Bublé.
Muslimgauze – Mullah Said [1998] 2xLP (Staalplaat)
First vinyl edition; originally released on CD in 1998. Much like earlier entrants in the subscription series Sandtrafikar, Mullah Said concentrates on the softer yet still ominous side of Muslimgauze, coming across as meditative, late-night music which still has an understated edge to it all. The six lengthy tracks are based on hypnotic and somewhat menacing grooves: a repetitive dub bass beat, waves of Middle Eastern strings and voices, layers of building hand percussion.
Nightmares On Wax – Citizen Kane 12”+MP3 (Warp)
The electro composer returns with a fresh new single featuring Allen Kingdom. Released ahead of his upcoming album Shape The Future, the track demonstrates the journey George Evelyn has taken over his expansive and influential career, pushing further into deep, gospel-tinged hip-hop, than ever before.
Over The Rhine – Drunkard’s Prayer [Reissue/2005] 2xLP (Great Speckled Dog)

Side D is comprised of three live bonus tracks, not included on the CD version.
Professor Longhair – Mardis Gras In New Orleans [Reissue/1981] LP (Wax Love)

Max Richter – Black Mirror: Nosedive [Score] LP (Deutsche Grammophon)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Richter’s powerfully emotional score mirrors the film’s bleak but dream-like quality, where anxiety lurks constantly beneath the surface, underlining the mood of what is, essentially, a tragi-comedy.
Santa Cruz – Bad Blood Rising LP (M-Theory Audio)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. The Helsinki hell-raisers – whose brash, Sunset Strip-inspired hard rock has been praised by Rolling Stone as “debaucherous and flamboyant” – unleash a new album. “Pure f**king adrenaline.”
Soundtrack – The Lobster LP (Fire Soundtracks)
Academy award nominated film and winner of the 2015 Cannes Film Festival Jury prize (among many others), The Lobster is a dystopian comedy-drama directed by Yorgos Lanthimos (Dogstooth, The Killing Of A Sacred Deer) and co-written by Efthymis Filippou that stars Colin Farrell, Rachel Weisz and Olivia Colman. Curated by Lanthimos and music supervisor Amy Ashworth, the soundtrack “brings the film’s edgy tension and menace to the fore” (Screen Daily) with orchestral renditions of Beethoven, Stravinsky and Shostakovich alongside Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds with Kylie Minogue on ‘Where The Wild Roses Grow’ and Sophia Loren with Tonis Maroudas on “Ti Ein Afto Pou To Lene Agapi.” Limited colored vinyl LP pressing.

Nikki Sudden & Rowland S. Howard – Johnny Smiled Slowly LP (Bang)
An absolutely killer recording of Nikki Sudden with Rowland S. Howard, where they perform only songs of The Jacobites. If you can imagine the sound of The Jacobites with the guitar of The Birthday Party, then you are still far away from the extreme mix of beauty and distortion included in this recording that these two legends of rock ‘n’ roll performed back in 1987.
Tommy 86 – Transhumanism 2xLP (Blood Music)
New album from the retrosynth veteran. Combining pulsating, distorted leads that spiral and expand over jagged bass lines that cut like a knife, Transhumanism is equal parts Dan Terminus hyperactivity with Perturbator’s slow, crawling meditations upon rising motifs.
Cosey Fanni Tutti – Time To Tell [Reissue/1982] LP (Conspiracy International)
The long-awaited deluxe special edition reissue of Cosey Fanni Tutti’s Time To Tell, originally recorded and released on cassette in 1982, sees a timely release after the success of Cosey’s recent autobiography Art Sex Music. The Lyman Woodard Organization – Saturday Night Special [Reissue/1975] 2xLP (BBE)
Vinyl reissue of a rightly heralded jazz fusion classic. Recorded in 1975, Saturday Night Special features organ, electric piano and Mellotron by bandleader Lyman Woodard alongside guitar and bass by Ron English, with drums and percussion by Leonard King, Bud Spangler and Lorenzo “Mr. Rhythm” Brown respectively. Despite the fairly sparse instrumentation, the album boasts an impressive wall of sound, powerfully atmospheric in its almost low-fi aesthetic. Hinting at more traditional jazz, rhythm & blues, Afro-Cuban styles and more, the uniqueness of this album is surely in its feel: summoning up images of a vast industrial landscape, assembly lines and urban decay. In other words, this record sounds like Detroit.
Christian Zanési – Grand Bruit / Stop! l’horizon [1991/1993] LP (Recollection GRM)
“The great mobile sound bodies have an ordinary yet amazing ability to place the listener-traveler within, as if he or she was inside a giant double bass, in this case a train stroked by a double bow: the rails and the air. In 1991, I explored this phenomenon during my daily commute from the studio to my home. I used only a 21 minutes recording and treated it as a single sound object. I then processed and enhanced it as a photographer would have done, immersing it in successive ‘baths’. The title I chose for this singular form was Grand Bruit.”
Zazou / Bikaye /Cy 1 – Noir et Blanc [Reissue/1983] LP (Crammed Discs)
“First ever reissue of a seminal, ambitious fusion of Congolese vocals, likembe and rhythms with analog electronics and free jazz leanings, Noir et Blanc is justifiably hailed as one of the first and most influential records of its kind, or ‘in the same class s Byrne & Eno’s Bush Of Ghosts… an imaginary collaboration between DAF and Fela Kuti’ as the UK’s Melody Maker astutely put it in 1983.” — Boomkat

The resulting album, Dear December, brings holiday cheer and a fresh batch of great songs featuring collaborations with Ben Gibbard (death Cab for Cutie), Peter Buck, Mike Mills, The Posies, Colin Meloy (The Decemberists), Chuck Prophet, M. Ward, Tammy Ealom (Dressy Bessy), Kurt Bloch, Kelly Hogan and Norah OConnor. [Vinyl edition released last week as part of RSD Black Friday.]
