Asking Alexandria – Asking Alexandria CD (Sumerian)
Recorded producer Matt Good, Asking Alexandria’s self-titled fifth album is an unbridled celebration of acceptance, of the strength of diversity and the freedom of “leaning into the crazy” (as vocalist Danny Worsnop puts it), instead of struggling for conformity.
AtomTM & Lisokot – Walzerzyklus CD (Raster Music)
Walzerzyklus’ seven tracks, created in collaboration with Russian singer Lisokot, are subdivided into three pieces of two-minutes each and four pieces of three-minutes each, intentionally reflecting the 3/4 time of a classic waltz. Throughout the release, Lisokot’s delicate vocals are put into different relations to AtomTM‘s rather cool machine music, either complementing or contrasting each other. In the same line, the three shorter “leitmotifs” provide the main theme that is taken up repeatedly in the course of the release. [Vinyl edition due January 26.]

dvsn – Morning After CD (OVO Sounds)
“Morning After is a reminiscent album, a testament to the instrumental glories of yesteryear. Callbacks to the R&B staples of dvsn’s youth — the duo’s Paul Jefferies, who calls the group’s instrumental shots, was born in 1985, around when the sound of Morning After began to take over the airwaves — act as this album’s driving force. The glorious wash of Casio keys throughout penultimate track ‘Body Smile,’ by far the most obvious turning back of the clock, is glassy and emotive, a perfect accompaniment to the stripped-bare ballad backbone beneath.” – The Princeton LP

Various Artists – Duomo Sounds Ltd: Nigerian ’80s Disco Music CD/2xLP (Livingstone Studio)
Sweet grooves from the Duomo Sounds label – a short-lived Nigerian imprint that cut some mighty funky sounds at the start of the ‘80s. It even includes the track Jeffrey Lee Pierce (The Gun Club) wrote for The Nomads and material recorded with Johnny Thunders.
The OCS – Memory Of A Cut Off Head 2xLP (Castleface)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. OCS, aka Orinoka Crash Suite, is one of the lesser-used musical incarnations fronted by voraciously hard-working Californian John Dwyer. While retaining his love of the fantastical, imaginary and otherworldly, Dwyer’s 20th album Memories Of A Cut Off Head is in stark musical contrast to the frenetic garage-rock output of his usual formation Thee Oh Sees. Working with long-term friend and bandmate Brigid Dawson, he’s crafted a surprisingly tranquil and reflective record of strange folk-psychedelia, made stranger still by Dwyer’s broad use of instrumentation, ranging from lush string arrangements, through harpsichord and musical saw, to Radiophonic Workshop style synthesis.

Deluxe vinyl edition includes double-vinyl LP pressing of the original album plus three 12” vinyl singles. Listening to 1992’s Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde 25 years after its release, its sense of timeliness is unmistakable. Every song on the album inverts a hoary hip-hop cliché. With classics like “Oh Sh*t,” “Otha Fish,” “Ya’ Mama,” and the now-ubiquitous “Passin’ Me By,” Bizarre Ride II The Pharcyde remains essential and enduringly unique – a rite of passage for any serious hip-hop fan.
Prurient – Rainbow Mirror 6xLP (Hospital Productions)
On Rainbow Mirror, the latest work from renowned noise-music artist Prurient, fifteen new time-stretching tracks explore the more glacial and meditative side of Dominick Fernow’s noise and power electronics with a total running time of almost three-and-a-half hours. Not necessarily the direct follow-up to the Frozen Niagara Falls album, this second conspiracy between the label and the band stands as another singular landmark among the vast repertoire Fernow has amassed. While familiar moments from that recent album can be found within, this ambient noise marathon also conjures the atmosphere of Fernow’s old-school noise histrionics, while bringing in introspective new observations. This intense, unforgiving, trance-inducing aura is presented through waves of time-stretching electronics, layered counterpoint feedback, loops, and extended droning pulsating synth passages. [Four-CD edition due December 22.]

Maurice Smith – Can’t Fight The Feeling 7” (ORG Music)
Mississippi born, Los Angeles-based singer and songwriter Maurice Smith has a feel for classic soul, and he fed that love through his work with artists like Sy Smith, Tony Toni Tone, Seal and Beyoncé. While Maurice claims artists like Bill Withers and Marvin Gaye as influences, one can hear an awful lot of Curtis Mayfield meets James Brown in his music. And that goes for his brand new single, the hot, horn-filled “Can’t Fight The Feeling.”
Sólstafir – Svartir Sandar [Reissue/2011] 2xLP (Season Of Mist)

Taylor Swift – Reputation LP (Big Machine)
Limited double picture disc vinyl LP pressing. “Reputation builds on the synth-pop of 1989 – ingenious hooks blown out for maximum sonic bombast, with production split between the team of Max Martin and Shellback (“2 Swedes and a Swift”) and Jack Antonoff. It is Swift’s most intimate album – a song cycle about how it feels when you stop chasing romance and start letting your life happen. As one of the all-time great pop masterminds, she’s trying something new, as she always does. But because she’s Taylor Swift, she can’t stop being her own turbulent, excessive, exhausting and gloriously extra self. Make no mistake, this girl’s love affair with drama is alive and well. The songs explore a timely question: What happens to your identity when you step back and stop defining yourself by how strangers see you? An album full of one-on-one adult love songs Reputation is a daring swerve from a songwriter who’s scored so many brilliant hits about pursuing the next romantic high. Taylor might love the players, but nowhere near as much as she loves the game.” – Rolling Stone

Thile manned almost all of the stringed instruments on Thanks For Listening and is joined by guest singers Sarah Jarosz, Gaby Moreno, and Aoife O’Donovan. “Right now, with how easy it is to be the talker on social media, how hard it is to maintain focus or give something enough attention to appreciate it, we’re in a place where listening is a precious commodity,” says Thile. “Thanks For Listening is a celebration of people who haven’t switched off, despite being given every reason to do so.”
