This New York-Swiss-French ensemble skillfully fuses elements of Baroque music, black metal, opera, jazz, and classical into a captivating, yet unsettling amalgamation. Weibermacht, a term translated with octave – flexing prowess by Andromeda Anarchia as “Bitch Power,” immediately delves into the provocative, pushing boundaries from the very first track, “Anno Domina.” Sung entirely in German, the song initiates a 45-minute thematic plunge into the depths of BDSM, where pain blurs with pleasure. This venture into the taboo is no surprise, as the band’s lineup also includes Imperial Triumphant guitarist Zachary Ezrin and boasts a truly disturbing cover by renowned artist Eliran Kantor (Immolation, Heaven Shall Burn). Stephanie Lambring – Hypocrite CD/LP (Almost Autonomous)
“I’m not afraid of the uncomfortable,” says Stephanie Lambring. “Oddly enough, I think you can actually find a lot of comfort in exploring it, in facing it head on and seeing it for what it really is.” It’s that paradox that lies at the heart of Lambring’s stunning new record, Hypocrite. Recorded in Nashville with producer Teddy Morgan (Carl Broemel, Elise Davis), the collection is a remarkable work of self-reflection from an artist determined to know her truest self (and to help us find our own true selves in the process). The arrangements are lush and hypnotic here, with Lambring’s breathy vocals floating atop a sea of dreamy synthesizers and shimmering guitars, and the writing is as raw and vulnerable as it gets, confronting everything from religion and trauma to body image and motherhood with unflinching honesty. The result is a record that lands somewhere between Phoebe Bridgers and Alanis Morrissette as it looks for the best by reckoning with the worst, an album full of love and grace and compassion that aims to remind us that imperfection and humanity go hand in hand.

SeeYouSpaceCowboy – Coup De Grâce CD/LP (Pure Noise)
Every single song SeeYouSpaceCowboy have released since forming in 2016 has been deeply rooted in the life experience and trauma of frontwoman Connie Sgarbossa. Whether that’s existential anguish, substance addiction or suicidal ideation (and attempts), Sgarbossa has never been afraid to detail her pain and torment in excruciating detail. She holds nothing back and combined with the band’s intensely dark (and darkly intense) blend of sasscore, punk, mathcore and metalcore, it’s always made for profound and devastating listening. The songs reveal a forward-thinking sensibility rooted in ancestral soul. He creates spiritual hymns for the streets that tap into universal ideals and irrepressible groove. In an era plagued by short-term thinking, his ambitions reveal a crate-digging depth of music history and a meticulous ear for detail.
SeeYouSpaceCowboy – Coup De Grâce CD/LP (Pure Noise)
Every single song SeeYouSpaceCowboy have released since forming in 2016 has been deeply rooted in the life experience and trauma of frontwoman Connie Sgarbossa. It’s one of the things that makes the San Diego band’s music so compelling and visceral, because those oftentimes harrowing experiences flow through its veins. Coup De Grâce is no exception to that rule.
Elvie Shane – Damascus CD/LP (Wheelhouse)
Second album from the singer/songwriter.

The Stairsteps – 2nd Resurrection [Reissue/1976] CD/LP (BMG)

Originally discovered by Curtis Mayfield, they were introduced to The Beatles by Billy Preston. George Harrison signed the band to Dark Horse Records in 1975 and put out the band’s final album, 2nd Resurrection, which featured one of their biggest hits, “From Us To You”. Billy Preston played synthesizer and served as co-producer alongside Robert Margouleff.

This carefully curated collection not only showcases Swift’s musical evolution but also serves as a tangible connection between the artist and her fans, making it a must-have for those who appreciate the blend of music and artistry. The album features two major collaborations: Post Malone, whose name is billed on track one, “Fortnight,” as well as Florence + The Machine on track eight, “Florida!!!”
Thief – Bleed, Memory 2xCD/LP (Prophecy)
On their fourth full-length album, “Bleed, Memory” Los Angeles-based electronic experimentalists Thief explore the theme of ‘memory’ both lyrically and musically, which runs as a bold dotted line throughout the album. The solo project’s mastermind, Dylan Neal, was largely inspired for this album after witnessing his father, who had recently been diagnosed with dementia, transition from bouts of forgetfulness and confusion to acute episodes of false memories, delusions, and strange behavior. This makes Bleed, Memory a very personal creation and the experience has led Neal to question his own memories and explore how they shape his identity and reality. Once again, the backbone of Thief is made up of sampled sacred chant music. Some were sampled from crate digging, and some recorded at various orthodox churches. These samples got stretched, cut, mangled, morphed, and pitched to function like its own ethereal instrument. [An orange color vinyl pressing is available.]

With four decades worth of recordings in its archives, many documenting artists in their formative years, this is bound to be an essential release. “I’ve had the privilege of listening to some of these tracks and they’re just jaw-droppingly gorgeous” says Groce. Net profits from the album’s release will benefit the program. Produced out of West Virginia Public Broadcasting in Charleston, Mountain Stage is heard on nearly 300 public radio stations nationwide. The series continues to present world class performances with the same passion, dedication, and curiosity that’s guided it from the start. Some of their most iconic guests include John Prine, Wilco, R.E.M., Phish, Townes Van Zandt, Patti Smith, Allen Ginsberg, Dr. John, Buddy Guy, and Preservation Hall Jazz Band to name a few.

John Zorn – The Hermetic Organ Volume 12 – The Bosch Requiem CD (Tzadik)
Recorded at the Grote Kerk in Den Bosch as part of Zorn’s 70th birthday celebration at November Music in Den Bosch, this exciting performance pays tribute to one of Zorn’s seminal influences-the 15th century painter Hieronymus Bosch. Performing on two different organs simultaneously, running from one to the other, this is one of the most bizarre installments in the entire Hermetic Organ series. The CD begins with a rare private performance of Zorn alone in the church exploring and stretching the organ’s capabilities. For the evening performance, A Pilgrimage Through Hell, Zorn’s dear friend and colleague of over thirty years John Medeski joins as his organ assistant, and the two of them literally pull out all the stops.

Emo three-piece Arm’s Length was formed in early 2019 in the small Canadian town of Belleville, Ontario when best friends Allen Steinberg and Jeremy Whyte finally began writing music together after years of knowing each other. Setting out to create a great new indie infused emo sound with shades of pop-punk, Arm’s Length made waves in this scene with the release of their first two EPs, What’s Mine Is Yours and Everything Nice in 2019 and 2021 respectively, including coverage on Pitchfork, NPR, and more. They have since released their debut album, Never Before Seen, Never Again Found in 2022 to great fan and critical reception.
Atrophy – Asylum LP (Massacre)
White colorway. Asylum is the next evolutionary step for Atrophy. Keeping the speed of “Socialized Hate” and the grooves of “Violent By Nature”, the album adds a big dose of heaviness to the mix resulting in a satisfying aural kick to the face. The lyrical focus is still focused on societal ills, from the insurrection to the brainwashing performed by the major news networks, and then also the obvious results from these on the people just struggling to live their lives.
Banners – All Back To Mine LP (Nettwerk)
Red colorway. English indie-pop act Banners (a.k.a. Michael Joseph Nelson) is known for his effervescent melodies and immensely relatable lyrics about the human condition. He is joined in this musical simpatico by Riley Mulherkar on trumpet, Carmen Staaf on piano, Barry Stephenson on bass, and Bryan Carter on drums.
Bo Carter – Banana In Your Fruit Basket: Red Hot Blues 1931-36 LP (Yazoo)
Bo Carter’s family had a musical tradition going back to slavery times and he learned a great deal from its very talented members. As a Mississippi musician, Bo was steeped in the region’s rich early blues repertoire, but was distinctive in adding to it a new level of sophistication rarely equaled by other blues artists. As a member of the great Mississippi Shieks band, he encountered a wide range of traditional and pop styles and employed many of them in his innovative performances. One part of his repertoire was the sexually suggestive double entendre blues that are featured here on this album. These recordings, which were demonstrably more original than any of his rivals, sold extremely well and helped Bo become one of the most prolific artists of the whole prewar blues period.
Circus Lupus – Circus Lupus LP (L.G. Records)
Before Circus Lupus landed on DC’s venerable Dischord Records, the group’s original Midwest lineup recorded a full album’s worth of songs less than a year after forming. With the demise of DC’s Ignition in the late ’80s, bass player Chris Thomson headed to Madison, WI for college. Before leaving DC, he dove headfirst into being a vocalist fronting the short-lived throwback punk/hardcore project Fury. Thomson served up pointed and profound Tony Cadena-inspired screeds about betrayal, disappointment and poseurs all set to a soundtrack of furiously primitive and chaotic music supplied by members of the DC punk band Swiz. Brief yet influential, this band marked Thomson’s switch to vocals, putting him on course to front Circus Lupus and claim a notable spot in the DC punk timeline of the late 20th century.
Damar Davis – Damar Davis LP (Salon Recordings)
Damar Davis, the self-titled EP from L.A.-based artist and Salon Recordings founder, Damar Davis, is a concise exploration of the influences that are defining the modern West Coast house sound. The Flesheaters – Minute To Pray A Second To Die [Reissue/1981] LP (Jackpot)
Red colorway. Jackpot Records is proud to re-reissue what many call arguably the greatest album of the punk rock era: The Flesh Eaters’ 1981 punk-noir masterpiece, A Minute To Pray A Second To Die. Once referred to as an all-star roots/voodoo combo, The Flesh Eaters could only have crawled out of the myst of the late L.A. ‘70s punk scene. Fronted by punk poet/composer Chris D. (Desjardins), the band was a satellite for exquisite collaborators that allowed him to bring the full force of his dark, messed-up lyrical nightmares. Members of X, Wall Of Voodoo, Los Lobos, The Blasters, and The Plugz all hopped into his unmarked car to take a drive with Chris D. It’s grabbed-by-the-throat vocals are powerfully buoyed by the tight melodicism emanating from the players on this record (John Doe and DJ Bonebrake from X, Steve Berlin of Los Lobos, Dave Alvin & Bill Bateman of The Blasters). Hell, we even get the perfectly executed John Doe original, “Cyrano de Berger’s Back”, which was re-recorded by X in 1987. The creators of this record made a pulp novel for your ears with an equal chance to scar your heart. Do not miss out-this is punk noir at its greatest.
Ana Frango Elétrico – Me Chama de Gato Que Eu Sou Sua LP (Mr Bongo)
With two critically acclaimed albums and a swathe of award-winning production turns under their belt, Ana Frango Elétrico present their most confident and accomplished work to date: Me Chama de Gato Que Eu Sou Sua (‘Call Me They That I’m Yours’). Gesturing to a tradition of Brazilian boogie music, but bouncing with modern pop ebullience, the album sees the Rio artist evolve from a captivating upstart into a surefooted scene leader in full stride.
Jan Garbarek Quartet – Afric Pepperbird [Reissue/1970] LP (ECM)
Recorded in Oslo in September 1970, Afric Pepperbird was released on New Year’s Day in 1971. Half a century later, it still conveys the freshness and excitement of discoveries being made. The album signaled the arrival of four Norwegian improvisers – Jan Garbarek, Terje Rypdal, Arild Andersen and Jon Christensen – at the fledgling ECM label. It was the start of a lifelong association with each of the musicians, whose influence was soon to reach far beyond the borders of their homeland.
Jerry Garcia – Garcia (Remixed) LP (ATO)
Garcia (Remixed) is a re-imagination of the Grateful Dead co-founder’s landmark solo debut album as a genre-defying dance potion created by DJ/Producer & life-long Deadhead LP Giobbi. The collection, which features several of Garcia’s most timeless compositions co-written with Robert Hunter including “Deal”, “Bird Song”, “Sugaree”, and “The Wheel”, gives the original album a whole new beat in celebration of its 50th anniversary.
Hellbastard – Genocidal Crust: The Demos 1986-1987 2xLP (Radiation Reissues)
Either intentionally or unwittingly this is a band experimenting with extremes. Formed in 1985 when Thatcherism swooped over England and scalped the North East, Hellbastard admit to being ‘too metal for punk, too punk for metal’, instead coining the term ‘crust’ as a way to feel at peace within themselves whilst simultaneously starting a sonic war that shocked the nerves into spools of frayed tape. With Malcolm ‘Scruff’ Lewty on guitar and vocals, Ian ‘Scotty’ Scott on bass and vocals and Phil Laidlow on drums, it was all captured with their classic Ripper Demo debut release in 86′. But really, it’s all encapsulated right here with this reissue also containing the follow-up demolition from ’87 – Hate Militia. Both are perfect ways to establish the nightmarish worlds, of death camps and dark sides, that wildly writhe within his group’s menacing worldview. [A color vinyl pressing is available.]
Herbie Hancock – Speak Like A Child [Reissue/1968] LP (Blue Note)

Bobby Hutcherson – Happenings [Reissue/1966] LP (Blue Note)
On his 1966 classic, Happenings, vibraphonist Bobby Hutcherson assembled a quartet with Herbie Hancock (piano), Bob Cranshaw (bass) and Joe Chambers (drums) for a sublime post-bop outing featuring captivating Hutcherson originals, including the stunning ballad “Bouquet” and Latin-tinged “Rojo”, as well as a version of Hancock’s “Maiden Voyage”.

In 2023, Johnson was grammy-nominated for producing Meshell Ndegeocello’s The Omnichord Real Book (Blue Note). [CD version due May 3.]

Unfortunately, we lost her before that date never materialized, and fortunately, that concert was recorded. The acoustics in this hall are magnificent; A Lovesome Thing, produced by Kurt Rosenwinkel and Motéma’s Jana Herzen, is dedicated to Geri’s memory and is truly a ‘lovesome thing’ for fans of Geri, of Kurt, and of piano and guitar jazz.

Smith’s singular vision and musicianship, this time filtered through ensemble arrangement largely performed by others-an approach he’s explored in recent years. A micro-orchestra of horn and woodwind players was enlisted, as well as other collaborators including Kate Wright (Movietone, 1000 Dawns) and Yvonne Sone. The stunning results call to mind Mark Hollis’ eponymous solo LP and Gerald Busby’s masterful 3 Women score, not only in terms of sonics or tone, but also in the use of space.

With a deep body of work spanning twelve albums, and as a formidable collaborator on records by Laraaji, Tunde Adebimpe (TV on the Radio), Scientist, and more recently with André 3000 and Carlos Niño on New Blue Sun, Mia is an essential element in the richly woven musical tapestry of her native Los Angeles. Morning Music is an instrumental, ambient experience unlike anything else in her catalog. Originally released as a CD in 2009 and now available for the first time on vinyl, Mia chose to forgo vocal expression and give full range to the voices of her instruments and the sounds around them. It is a gorgeous, softly stirring work of art that makes full use of its minimal elements.
