Ry Cooder / Taj Mahal – Get On Board: The Songs Of Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee CD/LP (Nonesuch)
Nearly sixty years after they first played together, Ry Cooder and Taj Mahal, longtime friends and collaborators, reunite with an album of music from two Piedmont blues masters who have inspired them all their lives: Get On Board: The Songs Of Sonny Terry & Brownie McGhee.
With Taj Mahal on vocals, harmonica, guitar, and piano and Cooder on vocals, guitar, mandolin, and banjo—joined by Joachim Cooder on drums and bass—the duo recorded eleven songs drawn from recordings and live performances by Terry and McGhee, who they both first heard as teenagers in California.
Charley Crockett – Lil’ GL Presents: Jukebox Charley CD/LP (Son Of Davy)
Charley Crockett delivers the new album Lil’ G.L. Presents: Jukebox Charley. The fourth edition of his Lil’ G.L. tribute series, produced by Billy Horton, Jukebox Charley is another great example of how Crockett is enlivening country music by looking back for inspiration and crafting his own singular sound whether through his own songs or the songs of others. On this new collection, Crockett mines country music’s past and then processes it through his singular “Gulf & Western” sound – weaving old school blues, R&B, soul, Cajun, western swing and other classic touchstones with country. And while the album features songs written by country legends like Willie Nelson, Tom T. Hall and George Jones, Crockett also shines a light on songs from regional acts like Louisiana’s Larry Brasso or a deep cut from Red Sovine. And even when he’s interpreting songs from country legends, Crockett steers toward lesser-known or underappreciated songs, eschewing staples of the genre.
Fontaines D.C. – Skinty Fia CD/LP/2xLP (Partisan)
2020’s A Hero’s Death saw Fontaines D.C. land a No. 2 album in the UK, receive nominations at the Grammys, BRITs and Ivor Novello Awards, and sell out London’s iconic Alexandra Palace. Now the band return with their third record in as many years: Skinty Fia. Used colloquially as an expletive, the title roughly translates from the Irish language into English as “the damnation of the deer”; the spelling crassly anglicized, and its meaning diluted through generations. Part bittersweet romance, part darkly political triumph – the songs ultimately form a long-distance love letter, one that laments an increasingly privatized culture in danger of going the way of the extinct Irish giant deer. [A limited-edition opaque red color vinyl pressing, and a deluxe double-LP 45rpm audiophile edition is available. Standard black vinyl edition due May 6.]
Foxes – The Kick CD (PIAS America)
The Kick is the highly anticipated third album from Grammy-winning artist Foxes. It was written and recorded remotely via zoom during the height of the pandemic, offering a form of escapism for Foxes. Inspired by the desire for freedom that the world collectively shared over the last 18 months of lockdowns, the near-animalistic desperation to socialize, and a longing to dance again, Louisa naturally pivoted the sonics to feed that escapism and create a record that simultaneously feels close to her euphoric, dancefloor-filling pop roots that brought us hits like “Let Go For Tonight”, “Youth” and “Body Talk”, while still feeling completely fresh. Unafraid of the art of the well-loved melancholic banger, lyrically The Kick touches on themes of loss and heartbreak, narrating painful places and soundtracking new beginnings to create an album for the post-pandemic world and a summer of never leaving the party early. [Vinyl edition TBD.]
Lani Hall (feat. Herb Alpert) – Seasons Of Love CD (Herb Alpert Presents)
Renowned author and Grammy award-winning singer Lani Hall returns to release her first new studio album in over 20 years, Seasons Of Love. Rising to fame in the 1960s as the lead singer for Sérgio Mendes & Brasil ’66, Hall has been a prominent vocal talent for decades. She famously sang the title song for the 1983 James Bond film, Never Say Never Again. Her Latin albums in the 1980s yielded multiple gold records and a Grammy award for Best Latin Pop Performance. Hall continues to record and perform with husband Herb Alpert, and this new collection of songs is a major return to form.
Joshua Hedley – Neon Blue CD/LP (New West)
Joshua Hedley is ‘a singing professor of country & western,’ he declares on his raucous and witty new album, Neon Blue. It might sound like a punchline, but it’s not. An ace fiddle player, a sharp guitarist, and a singer with a granite twang, he’s devoted his entire life to the study of this genre. His previous records have showcased his deep knowledge of country music history, in particular the beery ballads of the 1950s and ’60s. Neon Blue, on the other hand, examines a very different, often forsaken era: the early 1990s. Neon Blue asks, “What if that fork had never happened? What if country kept on sounding like country?” Hedley finds something exciting in that old hat-act sound, and Neon Blue plays up the excitement of bigger-than-life choruses, the relatable emotions of those sad-eyed ballads, and the inventiveness of the lively production. [An indie store exclusive autographed CD edition and an indie store exclusive clear vinyl pressing is available.]
Christian Lee Hutson – Quitters CD/LP+MP3 (ANTI-)
Christian Lee Hutson starts his new album Quitters with a laugh. In this follow up to his 2020 album, Beginners, Hutson moves away from the focus on growing up to the dread and complications of growing older. The laugh that announces Quitters is the kind you’ll find at the end of John Huston films, one of resignation and release, and somehow a cosmic laugh that says “California”, a place where lonely people gather like birds. Across Quitters’ 13 tracks, Hutson crafts this portrait of the place he’s from. In these short story-like songs, Hutson presents characters who carry this golden light and sinister geography inside them. It’s a place where everything in the end gets blown away and paved over with something new, where even the ocean and fires are always whispering, “One day we’ll take it all back.” This is a Los Angeles in constant transition, where childhood is lost, where home is gone and can never be visited again. [An indie store exclusive translucent purple color vinyl pressing is available.]
Magnolia Park – Halloween Mixtape CD (Epitaph)
Made up of lead vocalist Joshua Roberts, guitarists Tristan Torres and Freddie Criales, bassist Jared Kay, drummer Joe Horsham, and keyboardist Vincent Ernst, Magnolia Park have recorded almost all their output to date with Audio Compound producers Andrew Wade and Andy Karpovck. The first iteration of the band formed in 2019, with a mission of inventively fusing genres while increasing inclusivity in the punk world. ” An up-close portrait of a long-distance relationship, new single “Back Home” took shape from a demo created by Ernst (a dual citizen who mainly lives in Germany). The track perfectly encapsulates the potent tension at the heart of Magnolia Park, unfolding in moody guitar work, dreamy textures, thrashing rhythms, and sing-along-ready melodies. Another track showcasing the cathartic power of their sound, the wildly catchy “Tonight” feat. Lil Lotus also explores a bittersweet emotional experience. The follow-up to their early 2021 EP Dream Eater, Halloween Mixtape features such standout tracks as “Kids Like Us,” an anthem for all those who’ve struggled with being marginalized. [Vinyl edition due June 3.]
Old Crow Medicine Show – Paint This Town CD/LP (ATO/Virgin)
Paint This Town is a return to form for Old Crow Medicine Show, showcasing their ability to merge profound introspection with the rapturous string band revival sound. The album is their most incisive body of work to date and shines a light on the darker aspects of the American experience with character-driven songs underpinned by the band’s vision for a more harmonious future. Old Crow Medicine Show offers a riveting glimpse into American mythology and the wildly colorful characters who populate it. Co-produced by OCMS and Matt Ross-Spang, the album pays homage to everyone from Elvis Presley to Eudora Welty. Paint This Town’s title track is a swinging anthem that fully embodies the band’s carefree troublemaking over the last two decades. [An indie store exclusive vinyl pressing is available.]
Bonnie Raitt – Just Like That… CD/LP (Redwing)
With Just Like That…, her twenty-first album and first new release in more than six years, Rock and Roll Hall of Famer Bonnie Raitt continues to display the vitality and urgency that has defined her legendary career. The mix of sounds and approaches on Just Like That… reveals how, 50 years after the release of her debut album, Raitt continues to personify what it means to stay creative, adventurous, and daring over the course of a life’s work. “On this record, I wanted to stretch,” she says. “I always want to find songs that excite me, and what’s different this time is that I’ve tried some styles and topics I haven’t touched on before.” [An indie store exclusive vinyl pressing is available.]
Spiritualized – Everything Was Beautiful CD/LP (Fat Possum)
Jason Pierce returns with the ninth studio album from his space-rock Spiritualized project which is ushered in by the soaring lead single “Always Together With You.” Following up 2018’s And Nothing Hurt, Everything Was Beautiful features seven tracks recorded by Pierce (who plays 16 instruments here) and over 30 musicians and singers across 11 different studios, as well as his home. Collaborators include his daughter Poppy, John Coxon, the Whitechapel Bell Foundry and more. “There was so much information on it that the slightest move would unbalance it but going around in circles is important to me,” Pierce explains. “Not like you’re spiraling out of control but you’re going around and around, and, on each revolution, you hold onto the good each time. Sure, you get mistakes as well, but you hold on to some of those too and that’s how you kind of… achieve. Well, you get there.” [An indie store exclusive vinyl pressing is available.]
Tame Impala – The Slow Rush 2xLP+2×12”+7” (Interscope)
Deluxe box set edition. The Slow Rush was recorded between Los Angeles and Parker’s studio in his hometown of Fremantle, Australia. The twelve tracks were recorded, produced, and mixed by Parker. The Slow Rush is Parker’s deep dive into the oceans of time, conjuring the feeling of a lifetime in a lightning bolt, of major milestones whizzing by while you’re looking at your phone, it’s a paean to creation and destruction and the unending cycle of life. The album cover was created in collaboration with photographer Neil Krug and features a symbol of humanity all but swallowed whole by the surrounding environment, as though in the blink of an eye. This set includes the regular album on transparent red color vinyl, two remix 12”s, a 7” single featuring two B-sides, an expanded booklet, and The Slow Rush 2050 Calendar.
Undeath – It’s Time… To Rise From The Grave CD/LP (Prosthetic)
[New York-based Undeath have returned from their mutilated tomb to horrify and dominate death metal’s insatiable masses once again. Their blessedly sick new album, It’s Time… To Rise From The Grave, shows the reconfigured quintet-Kyle Beam (guitars), Alexander Jones (vocals), Tommy Wall (bass), Jared Welch (guitars) and Matt Browning (drums) – have retained their mind-infecting sonic savagery but weren’t satisfied in their pursuit to improve it through wicked (yet studied) reformulation. Certainly, Undeath’s 2021 Decibel flexi, Diemented Dissection, paved the way, but it’s tracks like “Fiend for Corpses,” “Rise From The Grave,” and “The Funeral Within” that display Undeath’s terrifyingly insane trajectory. It’s Time… To Rise From The Grave isn’t just an early contender for death metal album of 2022 – it’s destined to be a modern-day classic. [Two color vinyl pressings are available: an indie store exclusive red w/ yellow & violet edition and a purple w/ white edition.]

Poppy Ajudha – The Power In Us CD (Virgin)
Poppy Ajudha epitomizes the uniquely diverse musical culture that exists in London. Her South London, St. Lucian-British background, the scene she has grown up in, and the musicians and creatives she regularly works with have all been pivotal in the forward-thinking, socio-politically blend of R&B, soul, and pop that she creates. Unafraid to stand up for what she believes in, her lyrics speak of feminism, colonialism, gender politics, current social issues and more.

Georgia is the second half of Aldean’s Macon, Georgia double album concept. The follow-up to the album Macon, this release includes the single “Trouble With A Heartbreak”.
Robert Ames / Ben Corrigan – Carbs CD (Modern Recordings)
When Robert Ames and Ben Corrigan started crafting the seven tracks on their debut album as Carbs, they were having fun. Corrigan, a composer and podcast host, and Ames, a conductor, composer, and curator, are often the people who bring other artists’ music to life. On Carbs, they had the opportunity to explore their voices as music makers, taking inspiration from their robust history of collaborations and passion for electronic and classical music to create sound that’s both cinematic and danceable, built on lush harmony, catchy patterns and driving rhythms that form an outer space trance. Corrigan and Ames first met three years ago when Ames was a guest on Corrigan’s podcast, excuse the mess.
Archgoat – All Christianity Ends CD/LP (Debemur Morti Prod.)
All Christianity Ends is a brutally focused reminder that while the infamous Finnish black/death metal legends continue to evolve, develop, and even ‘refine’ their hellish sound over recent full lengths, the elemental building blocks of classic Archgoat remain sequenced in their DNA.

Led by the classical training of Inguagiato and Lada, both of whom studied at Berklee College of Music, as well as the pure instinctual prowess of the collective, Aftermath brings never-before-heard influences to the forefront in a brand-new way. In a landscape more genre-less than ever, it’s the seamless, at-times effortless blending of disparate sounds that guides Aftermath on a hyper-modern tour through musical styles – steadied by the pop-punk energy that’s won Belmont legions fans on tours. [An indie store exclusive vinyl pressing is available.]
Bowling For Soup – Pop Drunk Snot Bread CD (Brando)

Dorothy – Gifts From The Holy Ghost CD/LP (Roc Nation)
Gifts From The Holy Ghost, Dorothy Martin’s third studio album as frontwoman for their pseudonymous rock band Dorothy, is the album she’s always wanted to make. Born from a sense of diving urgency, it’s their most bombastic rock ‘n’ roll work yet. While the debut album was made on a combination of whiskey and heartbreak, Gifts was built on sobriety, health, and spiritualism, in a way that reverses the cliched “good girl gone bad” narrative.
Electribe 101 – Electribal Soul CD/LP (Electribal)
Electribal Soul is the fabled, previously unreleased second album from UK electronic pioneers Electribe 101. Recorded in 1991 by the quintet of vocalist Billie Ray Martin and Birmingham-based electronic musicians Brian Nordhoff, Joe Stevens, Les Fleming and Roberto Cimarosti, Electribal Soul was conceived as the sequel to the band’s 1990 debut album, Electribal Memories. Roger Eno – Turning Year CD/LP (Deutsche Grammophon)
Following the success of Mixing Colours – the 2020 duo release with his brother Brian Eno – Roger Eno returns for his solo debut on the Yellow Label. This time focusing solely on his own compositions, Eno presents a lush collection of lyrical pieces both old and new. “I thought about how our years comprise of moments, days, and the changing months. Faust – 1971-1974 7xCD/7xLP+2×7” (Bureau B)
Repress for those who missed out last year. Few bands have been as innovative, influential, or as irrepressible as Faust – the way they revolutionized the history of music in the space of just four years puts them right up there with The Velvet Underground. What began in a Hamburg (Sternschanze) bunker in 1970 would send shockwaves around the world. This box is the first virtually complete collection of Faust works from the years 1971-1974. In addition to the debut album, it includes the 1972 album So Far, the legendary 1973 Virgin UK release The Faust Tapes, Faust IV and, for the first time ever, the mythical, so-called Munich album Punkt, which Faust recorded at Giorgio Moroder’s Musicland Studios in 1974. For one reason or another, this last album never saw the light of day – until now. The bonus albums Momentaufnahme I and Momentaufnahme II also feature unreleased material, simultaneously affording us a fascinating glimpse of Faust’s creativity in their Wümme studio phase.
Fieh – In The Sun In The Rain CD/LP (Jansen)
Recently released on vinyl – now available on CD. The Norwegian neo-soul seven-piece releases the follow-up to their 2019 debut album, Cold Water Burning Skin, which was fittingly described as “future soul” by God Is In The TV and “left field R&B” by Clash Magazine. On In The Sun In The Rain, the band continues in the same vein, although simultaneously broadening their spectrum.

Hatchie – Giving The World Away CD/LP+MP3 (Secretly Canadian)
The sophomore album from Hatchie is the truest introduction to the songwriter/bassist at the helm of the project, Harriette Pilbeam. Produced by Jorge Elbrecht, Giving The World Away is Hatchie’s most thunderous, sprawling work yet. Featuring input from longtime Hatchie collaborator Joe Agius, it takes the celestial, shimmering shoegaze, and pop sensibilities of her earlier releases, but with the volume knob cranked up tenfold. Built out with percussion from Beach House drummer James Barone, it’s synthed-out, sonic opulence, a more structured and ornate musicality with traces of ’90s trip-hop and acid house influences. [A coke bottle clear vinyl pressing is available.]

Jazz Sabbath were powerless to do anything about it. Their 50-year-streak of misfortune ended in 2020 with the discovery of their debut album master tapes and the following re-release of the album. Loop – Sonancy CD/LP (Cooking Vinyl)
“Style-wise, it’s incredibly different, going back to thinking about guitars and guitar sounds. Obviously, you have to take into consideration things like percussive elements such as drums, which I haven’t been using in my other projects; but this is the mindset that makes up Loop.” So says Robert Hampson, the indefatigable visionary behind inspirational sonic architects Loop, whose eagerly anticipated fourth LP Sonancy (Latin for “to create noise”) is the perfect document for these strange times. Dynamic, dystopian, righteously angry, and unashamedly Loop-ian, it’s an album that marks a vital re-emergence for Hampson and Co.

Toronto heavy metal overachievers Skull Fist has more guts and balls than the police allow. Now, after 15 years on behalf of steel, Zach Schottler is really turning up the heat with the uniquely titled Paid In Full, a heavy metal wonder of the defiant middle-finger variety.
Vince Staples – Ramona Park Broke My Heart CD (Motown)
Esteemed hip-hop artist Vince Staples follows up his intimate self-titled album with Ramona Park Broke My Heart. “There’s a direct correlation,” Staples says of the two records. “They were kind of created at the same time. I was in a similar state of mind. [Vinyl edition TBD.]
Becca Stevens – Becca Stevens Attacca Quartet CD (Groundup Music Merch)
Nearly a decade ago, singer, songwriter, multi-instrumentalist, and 2021 Grammy nominee Becca Stevens was approached with an intriguing concept: to reimagine a selection of her songs with string arrangements for a performance at San Diego’s illustrious Mainly Mozart Festival. Little did she know, it would be a life-changing opportunity-introducing her to her future husband, the acclaimed violist, composer, and member of the Grammy Award-winning Attacca Quartet, Nathan Schram. The concert would also inspire a career-spanning passion project and resulted in the couple’s first collaborative album, Becca Stevens Attacca Quartet.

Deluxe edition contains four bonus tracks. 2022 release. For Revelation, Stone Broken decided it was time to turn up the volume by making everything bigger, bolder, and the best version of themselves. These tracks combine their signature emotive style with inventive arrangements venturing into fresh areas, including greater use of backing vocals, piano, and subtle electronics.

Kate Bollinger – Look At It In The Light LP+MP3 (Ghostly Int’l)
Kate Bollinger’s songs tend to linger well beyond their run times, filling the negative space of ordinary days with charming melodies and smart phrasings. She writes them at home in Richmond, Virginia, letting her subconscious lead, an open-ended process she likens to dreaming. From a chord progression appears a line, maybe a syllable will start to stick, enough to pursue, but she says sometimes the words don’t feel like her own, more like shapes that form in the mind’s sky. While many are personal and deal with the emotions that surface with finding her place in the world, she’d prefer they be whatever you’d like them to be, to connect with listeners in their own way. Bollinger’s musical universe is relaxed, tender, and unassuming; within lives a timeless sensibility, a songwriter’s knack for noticing the little things and their counterpoints. [A limited-edition blue color vinyl pressing is available.]
Calexico – El Mirador LP (ANTI-)
Indie store exclusive metallic gold color vinyl pressing. Oscillating between haunting desert noirs and buoyant jolts of cumbia and Cuban son, the album is permeated by longing. The title track “El Mirador” conjures images of a lighthouse, beckoning to lost souls in the night with hypnotic bass lines and cascading percussion. El Mirador also features vocals from Guatemalan singer-songwriter Gaby Moreno, while Spanish rocker Jairo Zavala brings his signature bravado to the track ”Cumbia Peninsula”. By working with friends and recurring collaborators, Calexico also highlights the unique social and linguistic intersections at the US-Mexico border and the magnificent possibilities of a borderless world.

Carly Cosgrove – See You In Chemistry LP (Wax Bodega)
Maroon color vinyl pressing. Philadelphia trio Carly Cosgrove’s debut LP, See You In Chemistry, is about growth, but not the tidy, Instagram-ready kind. At its beginning, vocalist and guitarist Lucas Naylor is steady, stable, and happy: the work has been done, progress has been made, things are alright. Over the remaining 11 tracks, and across a complex, earworm patchwork of riotous emo punk, towering post-hardcore, mathy indie rock, and crystalline shoegaze, things fall apart: bands dissolve, friendships end, and self-doubt, depression, and anxiety triple-team their way to victory over happiness.

Micheal “Eyedea” Larsen and Gregory “DJ Abilities” Keltgen first met in the mid- ‘90s and soon began a working relationship that would play a prominent role in the burgeoning indie-rap movement of the time. After numerous successes across nearly every notable MC or DJ battle of the late ’90s and early ’00s, including HBO’s Blaze Battle, the Rocksteady Anniversary, Scribble Jam, the DMC’s and more, they had already cemented their legacies both as individuals in the battle scene and as the dynamic duo, Eyedea & Abilities, for their live performances and showmanship. However, determined not to be dismissed as one-dimensional, they set out to prove they were to be taken just as seriously at writing and recording. The release of their debut album, First Born, revealed their talents to be much more versatile and expansive than previously expected. The boastful arrogance and punchlines that had become synonymous with battling were notably scarce on the album. Fennesz – Hotel Paral.lel [Reissue/1997] 2xLP (Editions Mego)
Hotel Paral.lel, originally released in September 1997, was Christian Fennesz’s debut solo album. Following up from the EP Instrument, it was an investigation into the sonic possibilities residing in guitar based digital music, recorded just before mobile computing devices became the norm. A far more dark and experimental work than what was to follow. Freeform noise, sliced techno beats and subtle ambient textures create a timeless work, which is an essential addition to any collection of pioneering music of the late 20th Century.

SongBook is evidence of an edifice slowly being formed, a trepidatious first footstep by the band into the wider world.
Linqua Franqa – Bellringer LP (Ernest Jenning)
In linguistics, “lingua franca” is a term for a language used to communicate across cultures. For instance, the lingua franca of the Internet is typically English; in post-colonial Africa, French is often the lingua franca. For Athens, Georgia-based rapper, linguist, activist, parent, and politician Mariah Parker aka Linqua Franqa, music is the tool they use to communicate – and educate – across cultural boundaries. Parker is a linqua franqa for the people. Weaving a rich tapestry of hip-hop lyricism and neo-soul hooks, Parker imbues every song with a sense of urgency and keen social consciousness.

It’s the Cleveland-based collective’s masterwork – a double LP spanning 20 songs and three singers, touching on neo-soul, hip-hop, and the cosmic expanse in between/beyond. It is a humble addition to the long legacy of James Baldwin’s adage of the artist as witness. It is their song cycle, written in a time that just may need a song or two in support of and in love and power to the living.
Pinhead Gunpowder – Goodbye Ellston Avenue [Reissue/1997] LP (1-2-3-4 Go!)

Spectral Wound – Infernal Decadence [Reissue/2018] LP (Profound Lore)
Vinyl reissue of the Montreal black metal band’s second album. “The beauty of this album is that it manages to be memorable without relying on a specific gimmick: there’s no needless clean chorus, nor pointedly overwrought leads. Each song is built on the best foundation available for a metal band: the almighty riff. With solid riffs dropping out only to make room for other equally enticing sections, it allows the competence of the rest of the band to shine without any showboating or cheese. If only there were more of this in metal.” – Vice

Tortoise – Rhythms, Resolutions & Clusters [Reissue/1995] LP+MP3 (Thrill Jockey)
Tortoise has spent nearly 30 years making music that defies description. While the Chicago-based instrumental quintet has nodded to dub, rock, jazz, electronica and minimalism throughout its revered and influential discography, the resulting sounds have always been distinctly, even stubbornly, their own. One of the thrulines that create that distinctive sound is what might be called a pervasive element of group play, or ensemble-mindedness, as opposed to emphasis on a virtuoso soloist or frontman. Rhythms, Resolutions & Clusters follows in this line as Tortoise turned their iconic early songs over to their friends to remix.
