Bloc Party – Alpha Games CD/LP (BMG)
“Alpha Games was conceived on the road, playing in front of amazing crowds on our last tour and then brought to life with the fire and the frustrations of 2020,” says Kele Okereke on Bloc Party’s first new album in seven years. The first Bloc Party album written and recorded with a new lineup, adding the musicality of Justin Harris (bass) and the unbridled energy and power of Louise Bartle on the drums to capture the spark of their live shows. Produced by Nick Launay and Adam Greenspan (Nick Cave, Yeah Yeah Yeahs, IDLES), the 12 tracks of Alpha Games veer from the intense and confrontational (“Traps”, “Day Drinker”) to melodic and introspective (“If We Get Caught”, “By Any Means Necessary”) and marks a new and important chapter in one of music’s most important voices in Kele Okereke. [An indie store exclusive red color vinyl pressing is available.]
Bob Moses – The Silence In Between CD (Astralwerks)
Grammy Award-winning duo Bob Moses delivers their highly anticipated third album, The Silence In Between. One of the most anthemic moments here, “Love Brand New” finds Vancouver-bred musicians/producers Tom Howie and Jimmy Vallance tapping into their deep-rooted love for ’90s alt-rock and left-of-center dance music. Written with Michel Zitron and John Martin (a Swedish production duo known for their work with the likes of Avicii and Swedish House Mafia), the track encompasses a glorious collision of moody guitar tones, mercurial textures, and wildly propulsive beats as Bob Moses channel the dizzying euphoria of new romance. As their boldest and most viscerally charged output to date, The Silence In Between amplifies the unbridled energy that’s made Bob Moses a repeat winner of Resident Advisor’s Best Live Act prize.
Daniel Johnston – Hi, How Are You: The Unfinished Album LP (Eternal Yip Eye Music)
Diagnosed with schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, singer-songwriter, musician, and visual artist Daniel Johnston is highly regarded in the lo-fi and alternative music scenes for his cassette recordings which are notable for their pure and childlike soul. He gathered a cult following when Kurt Cobain was seen wearing a t-shirt featuring the artwork from Johnston’s 1983 album Hi, How Are You and named checked fellow 1983 release Yip Jump Music as one of his Top 50 albums of all time. Johnston’s songs have been covered by the likes of Tom Waits, Pearl Jam, Radiohead, Bright Eyes, Teenage Fanclub, Beck, Wilco, Spiritualized and TV On The Radio among others. Johnston’s sixth self-released album, Hi, How Are You, is the inimitable artist’s most famous, as he claims he suffered a nervous breakdown while making it and never completely finished the tunes. That hasn’t prevented it from drawing widespread critical acclaim and influencing a smattering of indie-rock artists in its wake.
Lola Kirke – Lady For Sale CD/LP (Third Man)
Lola Kirke stands out like a flash of neon magenta in this nostalgic landscape of Americana tintypes. While many of her singing, songwriting peers look further back for inspiration, Kirke’s sweet spot is decidedly in the excess of the ‘80s. Anyone only familiar with Kirke through her on-screen performances (Mistress America, Gone Girl, Mozart In The Jungle) may be surprised by just how dazzling Lola-playing-Lola can be. Just a few lines into “Better Than Any Drug”, it’s clear no written role could reveal more of Kirke’s wit, lust for life, and sense of humor than this record captures with the help of producer Austin Jenkins (White Denim, Leon Bridges). The 10-song sophomore full-length LP showcases Kirke’s unselfconscious, country-twinged vocals alongside a brightly colored candy shop of glam-twang guitar riffs, department store TV commercial synth stylings, and swooping, lilting, unabashedly feminine background vocals. [An indie store exclusive green color vinyl pressing is available.]
Miranda Lambert – Palomino CD/2xLP (Sony Music Nashville)
For superstar Miranda Lambert, each of her seven consecutive No. 1 albums has presented a chance to explore a new theme while pushing herself across varying sonic landscapes. With the progressive 15-song album, Palomino, Lambert has crafted a record that explores the world and the people in it, seeking beauty and adventure all around. A line from the first song written for the album perhaps sums up the project as a whole best: “there’s always been a stranger in my soul / who loves a good goodbye and a good hello,” she sings in “Tourist”. On Palomino, her inner stranger travels lyrically from Fort Worth to the Mojave Desert; Battambang, Cambodia to Maine; the Crystal Palace in Bakersfield to the Rocky Mountains and beyond. In each destination and with every character met along the way, Lambert’s freewheeling trek is a work of unbridled freedom and self-discovery without painful introspection.
Let’s Eat Grandma – Two Ribbons CD/LP/LP+MP3 (Transgressive)
Let’s Eat Grandma released their second album, I’m All Ears, in 2018. It came out to a blaze of critical glory, thrilled fans who’d been with them since I, Gemini, and won them interested new listeners as they widened their musical scope. The band’s new album, Two Ribbons, tells the story of the last three years from both Jenny Hollingworth and Rosa Walton’s points of view. As a body of work, it is astonishing: a dazzling, heart-breaking, life-affirming and mortality-facing record that reveals their growing artistry and ability to parse intense feeling into lyrics so memorable you’d scribble them on your backpack. The band has been through a lot in the last three years, and Two Ribbons is the artefact that signals progression out of very distressing times; a story of loss, change, and of survival; a proof of life. [The Deluxe CD vinyl editions include a bonus 7” single. Cassette version due May 20.]
Melody’s Echo Chamber – Emotional Eternal CD/LP+MP3 (Domino)
Emotional Eternal, the third studio album from Melody’s Echo Chamber, is a deeply human collection of songs full of prolonged moments of sonic transcendency – a record that clearly exhibits its maturity but still regards the world with a childlike wonder. Having swapped Paris for the clean air of the Alps, Melody hopes “the record has that uplifting quality. I made some big and impactful decisions and changes to my life. It took me to where it is peaceful, and I think the record reflects this.” [An indie store exclusive red color vinyl pressing is available.]
[Vinyl edition due May 13.]
Willie Nelson – A Beautiful Time CD/LP (Legacy)
Willie Nelson is back with his seventy-second solo studio album A Beautiful Time. A full-fledged collection of new studio material produced with long-time collaborator Buddy Cannon, it’s released just in time for Willie’s 89th birthday and shows off just how prolific he continues to be as it includes some of his finest songwriting and performances in years. The fourteen tracks include five amazing new Nelson/Cannon compositions, new songs from Chris Stapleton & Rodney Crowell (the first single “I’ll Love You Till The End Of Time”) and a cadre of top Nashville songwriters, plus a couple of plum covers by Leonard Cohen (“Tower Of Song”) and The Beatles (“With A Little Help From My Friends”) given expert interpretation by Willie.
Seratones – Love & Algorhythms CD/LP (New West)
Love & Algorhythms is an interstellar synthesis of astral soul, R&B, and sci-fi funk. Working with producer Paul Butler (The Bees, Micheal Kiwanuka, Caroline Rose, Hurray For The Riff Raff), Seratones have taken the invitation to knock at the door of the cosmos. A.J. Haynes’s voice dances with soul-stirring devotion at the altar of Black Feminisms: weaving the words Toni Cade Bambara, Octavia Butler’s Xenogenesis multiverse, echoes of bell hooks, and Audre Lorde’s Uses Of The Erotic: The Erotic As Power. With drummer Jesse Gabriel’s machine-like precision and the transcendental touches from guitarist Travis Stewart, the album oscillates between Alice Coltrane-inspired bliss and Giorgio Moroder’s ecstatic release. Each song hovers and pulsates in the wide, dark matter – constellations guiding a journey through the subtle body, the vast fullness of the human experience and the irresistible potential of liberation. [An indie store exclusive color vinyl pressing is available.]
Caroline Spence – True North CD/LP (Rounder)
True North, the fourth album from Caroline Spence, showcases the singer/songwriter’s refusal to exalt or commodify her own experience, and instead reaches for a far more magnanimous exploration of grief, growth, and the endless complexities of human nature. The result is a body of work that affirms Spence as a truly incomparable artist, reinforcing her profound capacity to pack so much insight into songs that illuminate and mesmerize.
Tomberlin – i don’t know who needs to hear this… CD/LP+MP3/Cassette (Saddle Creek)
Tomberlin is Sarah Beth Tomberlin, a pastor’s kid born in Florida, raised in rural Illinois. She wrote most of her debut, At Weddings (2018), while living at home. For a while after leaving home and church, she lived in Louisville, Kentucky. She worked a day job and kept writing songs. She posted some of these songs to Bandcamp, which led to her signing a record deal with Saddle Creek. It all happened fast: Less than a year after her first live show, she performed on Jimmy Kimmel and she ended up moving to L.A. which is where she wrote Projections (2020), her EP follow-up to At Weddings. During the pandemic, Sarah Beth was all over the place, physically and mentally. Louisville. Los Angeles. Back home in Illinois for a bit. Brooklyn, where she’s now settled, she says. Brooklyn is also where her new album i don’t know who needs to hear this… was recorded. [An indie store exclusive translucent orange color vinyl pressing is available.]
Robin Trower – No More Worlds To Conquer CD/LP (Provogue)
The iconic Robin Trower returns with his new studio album, No More Worlds To Conquer. For more than six decades, Trower’s career has known no bounds. At the age of 76, the British guitarist can reflect on a journey in which he has planted flags across the musical sphere and played every role imaginable. Few would dispute that the title of Trower’s latest album is a fair summary of the thumbprint he has left on the musical universe. But as he reminds us, it should not be misinterpreted as his mission being accomplished. “I definitely feel like I’m still reaching,” he says. “With the guitar, and the songs, and everything else. With every album, the music is the best I can do at that time. I think that’s what it’s about. This album is an evolution.”
Sofi Tukker – Wet Tennis CD (Sofi Tukker LLC)
Sofi Tukker, the genre-defying duo of Sophie Hawley-Weld and Tucker Halpern, is celebrated for their inclusive and global perspective on electronic music as well as their work’s themes of liberation, unity, and self-empowerment. Wet Tennis is an acronym: When Everyone Tries to Evolve, Nothing Negative Is Safe. Wet Tennis is about forward movement, optimism and growth, no matter what the challenge. Wet Tennis is a dedication to constantly evolving and celebrating aliveness. Wet Tennis is a lifestyle. It says: everything’s better when wet. Wetness is excitement, mother nature, movement, flow, sweat, and juice. It’s athletic and elegant. It’s loud and bright. All these qualities will be on full display when Sofi Tukker comes to town, both on stage and in the audience. [Vinyl edition – including a limited-edition picture disc version – due August 19.]
Ann Wilson – Fierce Bliss CD/LP (Silver Lining Music)
With Fierce Bliss, legendary Rock And Roll Hall of Fame inductee Ann Wilson – recognized as one of the greatest singers of all time and co-founder of multi-platinum stars Heart – has created a supremely lavish, warm and seductive slice of rock ‘n’ roll which provides an instant soundtrack whether on the freeway or in front of the fireplace. Recorded between Fame Studios in Muscle Shoals, AL and Power Station, Waterford, CT, Wilson got together with famed Nashville session guitarist Tom Bukovac and invited several friends (including Warren Haynes, Kenny Wayne Shepherd and Vince Gill) to help fashion an album which carries the glow of an ochre sunset and the pristine vocals of a rock legend who still has every single unique octave at her fingertips.

Dorothy – Gifts From The Holy Ghost CD/LP (Roc Nation)
Gifts From The Holy Ghost, Dorothy Martin’s third studio album as frontwoman for their pseudonymous rock band Dorothy, is the album she’s always wanted to make. Born from a sense of diving urgency, it’s their most bombastic rock ‘n’ roll work yet. While the debut album was made on a combination of whiskey and heartbreak, Gifts was built on sobriety, health, and spiritualism, in a way that reverses the cliched “good girl gone bad” narrative.

Toro y Moi – Mahal CD/LP+MP3/Cassette (Dead Oceans)
Toro y Moi’s seventh studio album, Mahal, is the boldest and most fascinating journey yet from musical mastermind Chaz Bear. The record spans genre and sound-encompassing the shaggy psychedelic rock of the 1960s and ’70s, and the airy sounds of 1990s mod-post-rock-taking listeners on an auditory expedition, as if they’re riding in the back of Bear’s Filipino jeepney that adorns the album’s cover. [A limited-edition silver color vinyl pressing is available.]
Trombone Shorty – Lifted CD/LP (Blue Note)
An album that captures the energy of his legendary live shows, Lifted combines classic New Orleans sounds (funk, gospel, street rhythms, Mardi Gras Indian chants and second lines) with modern lyrics, melody and beats to create something fresh and unique.

Various Artists – Pop Ambient 2022 CD/LP+MP3 (Kompakt)
The who’s who of Pop Ambient is once again at work, led for the first time by the highly trafficked Californian duo Blank Gloss, whose debut album Melt this year was certified by The Guardian as nothing less than “heart aching beauty”. Yui Onodera’s “Chrome” as well as “Kari”, a cooperation of Markus Guentner and Joachim Spieth, could also be imagined in the score of Denis Villeneuve’s new film version of Dune – however, colleague Hans Zimmer managed that quite well without the three. After such wonderful and stylish contributions by Reich & Würden, Triola and Thomas Fehlmann, the ear then lingers a bit longer on the ghostly “Weiht” by Morgen Wurde feat. Maria Estrella, a track like a temple of sound, a deep electronic immersion in a Japanese onsen. In this sea of immeasurable time, you could sink forever, but with the tracks of Andrew Thomas, Thore Pfeiffer and Max Würden & Pepo Galán the journey slowly comes to an end.

Coil – Musick To Play In The Dark² [Reissue/2000] 2xLP (Dais)
After leaving London in 1999 for the sleepy seaside retiree town of Weston-super-Mare, Coil co-founders John Balance and Peter “Sleazy” Christopherson set up shop in a palatial eight-bedroom estate to pursue the outer reaches of the group’s heightening cabalistic chemistry. Among the staggering string of late-era masterpieces they produced is lunar opus Musick Is To Play In The Dark, widely hailed as an artistic zenith upon its release. The sessions that birthed it were in fact so fruitful that a second LP took shape during the creation of the first one. Aided by the recent addition of Welsh multi-instrumentalist engineer Thighpaulsandra, Coil mined further into the recesses of surrealist eldritch electronica Balance termed “moon music” – post-industrial spellcasting at the axis of narcotic and nocturnal energies. Musick To Play In The Dark² spans a full witching hour of bad acid sound design, synthesizer voyaging, opiated balladry, Luciferian glitch, and subliminal hymnals, alternately ominous, oracular, and absurd. [Several limited-edition colorways are available.]
John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman – John Coltrane and Johnny Hartman [Reissue/1963] LP (Impulse!)
John Coltrane And Johnny Hartman, released by Impulse! Records in 1963, was recorded on March 7, 1963, at the Van Gelder Studio. Coltrane and Hartman had decided on 10 songs for the album, but en route to the studio they heard Nat King Cole on the radio performing “Lush Life”, and Hartman immediately decided that song had to be included on their record. The album was inducted into the Grammy Hall of Fame in 2013.

[An indie store exclusive ‘smoke swimming pool’ color vinyl pressing is due May 6.]
Alice Damon – Windsong LP (Morning Trip)
A masterworks of new age music. Gently propelled by Damon’s haunting breath-of-life vocal winds reminiscent of Joan La Barbara underscored by field recordings and Damon’s fretless bass sound calling to mind mid- ‘70s Joni Mitchell, Windsong is traveling music, for the roads or for the skies. Instantly moving, it conjures vistas both romantically familiar and cosmically mysterious – waterfalls and wind, the voice of the earth, as heard through heavenly prisms.
Mitch Davis – The Haunt LP (Arbutus)
Multi-instrumentalist, songwriter, and producer Mitch Davis steps out on his own with debut LP The Haunt, a singer-songwriter tour de force for which he wrote all the songs and played all the instruments, made in his home studio during the 2020 lockdown, with much of it recorded on equipment that he also built himself. The result is a uniquely personal statement brimming with color and optimism, even as it ponders universal themes of introspection and loneliness.

From Autumn To Ashes – Holding A Wolf By The Ears [Reissue/2007] LP (Vagrant)
2007’s Holding A Wolf By The Ears is the fourth studio album from Long Island’s From Autumn To Ashes. Many look at the band as one of the first to introduce a melodic voice into their music to offset the murderous screaming that brings the band’s heaviness to the forefront. That ying-yang vocal style has since been copied by hundreds of bands around the world, none of whom can match FATA’s song writing and catchy hooks.

Joe Grushecky & The Houserockers – American Babylon [Reissue/1995] 2xLP (Cleveland Int’l)

American Babylon found them teaming up with Bruce Springsteen, who handles production, plays on several tracks, and wrote two songs for the album. This 25th anniversary deluxe vinyl double-LP reissue also includes bonus live tracks from The Houserockers’ legendary October Assault Tour recorded at an enthusiastic hometown show that same year.
Sam Henshaw – Untidy Soul LP (Dorm Seven)
Opaque red color vinyl pressing. Debut album from the British singer/songwriter. Untidy Soul spans a myriad of genres and sounds. Saxophone swoons through hazy production before the bass kicks in on “Take Time” [feat. Tobe Nwigwe]. Simultaneously, a high-register harmony underscores Henshaw’s hypnotic hook. Elsewhere, “East Detroit” cruises on a skittering beat draped in an airy loop as he croons, “Baby, it’s 4am in East Detroit, and I’d do anything to hear your voice.” Elsewhere, guitar and horns entwine on the simmering “Enough”. Interludes such as “Mr. Introvert” and “Mr. Introvert Reprise” expand the album’s cinematic scope, while this journey concludes on a rapturous note during “Joy”.

King Tubby meets The Scientist – In A Revival Dub [Reissue/2009] LP (Radiation Roots)
Incredible collection of rare King Tubby vs. Scientist tracks. These were some of the last “classical” dub works created before dancehall ultimately mutated into a technologically driven sound that largely did away with organic instruments and although these works already point in that direction, they still sound entirely fresh today because of the superb musicianship of the Roots Radics and the guiding hand of Jah Thomas in the producer’s chair, as well as Scientist and his cohorts, working their dub magic at King Tubby’s studio.

[CD version due May 6.]

While many of us have struggled to salvage a sense of purpose from a year’s worth of isolation, veteran New York rocker Willie Nile has tapped into his own lockdown experience as a source of inspiration for the set of haunting new songs that comprise his emotion-charged new release, The Day the Earth Stood Still. Although the veteran singer-songwriter borrowed its title from the beloved 1951 science-fiction movie classic, the album was inspired by the sight of Nile’s beloved hometown of Manhattan temporarily turned into a desolate ghost town.
Oddisee – The Odd Tape [Reissue/2016] LP (Mello Music Group)

Vinyl reissue of a 1965 samba jazz gem.
Penelope Scott – The Junkyard 2 LP (Many Hats Endeavors)
Green & white marbled color vinyl pressing. Listening to Penelope Scott’s music is like sitting aboard a deranged theme park ride, twisting, and turning through caves of Gen Z malaise and satire. This college-student-turned-TikTok-sensation writes songs that contain the absurd humor of meme culture, an acute awareness that virtually every institution is broken, and the frankness of someone earnestly trying to wrestle with their demons. They’re cathartic, thought-provoking, and laugh-out-loud funny, and the artist behind them is far more interested in capturing specific feelings than abiding by the confines of genre.
Skeletonwitch – Devouring Radiant Light [Reissue/2018] LP (Prosthetic)
White color vinyl pressing. Devouring Radiant Light is the fifth full length and first to feature vocalist Adam Clemans, who debuted with Skeletonwitch on the band’s 2016 EP The Apothic Gloom. It picks right up where the EP ended, mixing their classic blackened thrash attack with atmospheric, post rock soaring melodies.

Suicidal Tendencies – How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can’t Even Smile Today [Reissue/1988] LP (Red Music Legacy)
Originally released in 1988, Suicidal Tendencies’ third LP, How Will I Laugh Tomorrow When I Can’t Even Smile Today, was a major turning point for Mike Muir and his Venice, CA crew. Led by Muir’s sardonic sneer, How Will I Laugh… grinds with beyond-punk prowess and biting social commentary that pushed Suicidal from Pendelton n’ bandana’d clad, Pepsi-chuggin’ hardcore heroes to flexible skateboard-obsessed thrashers who would give legends like Anthrax, Slayer and Metallica a run for their money. [An indie store exclusive blue color vinyl pressing is available.]
The Sully Band – The Sully Band LP (Blue Élan)
Anchored by Grammy Award-winner, slayer of the bass, James East (Eric Clapton, Elton John, Michael Jackson, and many others), The Sully Band is composed of seasoned, accomplished players who hail from exotic places like Japan, Panama, and the island of Lemon Grove. The horn section features sax-flute-harp-man Tripp Sprague (Kenny Loggins, The Little River Band, Smokey Robinson, The Temptations, The Four Tops) and trumpet and flugelhorn player Steve Dillard (The Righteous Brothers & Lynyrd Skynyrd).
Sunless – Ylem LP (Willowtip)
Released last November on CD – now available on vinyl. Part two of a trilogy, Ylem builds upon the concept and lyrical theme of the band’s independently released debut album, Urraca, by reinforcing the mysticism of the previous album while exploring new themes of displacement, fear, wonder, and transcendence. With the addition of a new drummer and an evolving approach to songwriting, Sunless further develops their signature sound with increasingly diverse, dense, and technical offerings.
Harvey Sutherland – Boy LP (House Anxiety)
Melbourne-based producer, DJ and instrumentalist, Harvey Sutherland recorded his debut album Boy between London, Los Angeles and Harvey’s own Swimming Pool Studio with a string of special guests including the inimitable DāM-FunK, who features on lead single, “Feeling Of Love”. Boy takes the base elements of funk and fires them through a prism of influences – the hyper-produced studio pop of Todd Rundgren, the luscious grooves of New York boogie and the harsh snap of coldwave. [A green color vinyl pressing is available. CD edition due May 13.]
Tall Heights – Juniors LP (Tall Heights)
The third full-length from Tall Heights, Juniors emerged from a period of profound turmoil and revelation for the Massachusetts duo. In the span of five months, Paul Wright and Tim Harrington experienced a convergence of events that included major health and substance-abuse crises among their closest loved ones, saying goodbye to Harrington’s grandfather and to a beloved grandfather figure for Wright, and-in far happier, yet still intense news-the announcement that each of their wives was expecting. Compounded by a series of shake-ups in their professional life, that upheaval coincided with the start of the pandemic. Rather than succumbing to the tremendous pressure of that point in time, Tall Heights chose to confront the chaos by creating within it. [Two colorways are available: red & white swirl and an indie store exclusive blue & white swirl.]
Robin Trower – Coming Closer To The Day [Reissue/2019] LP (Mascot Label Group)
Yellow color vinyl pressing. Robin Trower, the iconic guitarist who rose to fame with the legendary Procol Harum, returned in 2019 with Coming Closer To The Day. It’s rare to find a ’60s legend still on trailblazing form in their eighth decade. But while Trower’s peers recycle the old hits or retreat from view, the 73-year-old guitarist finds himself in a golden late-bloom of creativity. Even at this career pinnacle, Trower admits he “just can’t stop.”
Urethane – Chasing Horizons LP (Cyber Tracks)
Released last October on CD – now available on vinyl. Debut album from the pop-punk outfit featuring legendary Hall of Fame professional skateboarder and guitarist Steve Caballero. Destined for the sunset crew, for the hip shaking, for the gym, for those who are open minded with disco anyways, for more parties, last but not least for salvation. The variety range across the floor from boogie, Italo, new wave, classic soulful, Balearic, neo-disco, house-y, downbeat, fusion, garage, to tech disco.
Various Artists – Essential Sun Records: The Ultimate Collection LP (Sun)
Sam Phillips created the label where rock ‘n’ roll was born, Sun Records. He and Shelby Singleton produced and released countless hit records, spanning many genres. From the original recording of Johnny Cash’s “I Walk the Line”, Jerry Lee Lewis’s “Great Balls Of Fire”, and The Dixie Cups “Chapel Of Love”, to reimagined classics like Dave Dudley’s “Six Days On The Road” and everything in between, Essential Sun Records celebrates the 70th anniversary of the iconic label.
Heiko Voss – 3:30 Minute To Live LP (Imara)
Heiko Voss has earned near mythical status as a torchbearer for the emotional, deeply felt and quietly radical style of electronic music. There is something definitive and newly confident in 3:30 Minutes To Live that has it feeling like a real statement of intent if compared to his earlier releases. Voss describes his aesthetic as “indie pop music with a lot of guitar, electronic elements, and a great love for melancholic ’80s synth-lines.”

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Unrestricted by genre conventions and determined to raise the bar with each successive album, Wolves At The Gate deliver music and a message with a firm commitment to passion and authenticity. Tirelessly seeking out the light in seemingly overwhelming darkness, the Midwestern post-hardcore group balances soaring melodies with unrelenting metal and emotional heaviness.
Cassettes:
Proper. – The Great American Novel (Father/Daughter)
Channeling the heavier music he listened to during his adolescence-from post-hardcore outfit At the Drive-In to progressive metal band System of a Down-Garlington and the rest of Proper. – bassist Natasha Johnson (she/her) and drummer Elijah Watson (he/they) – push themselves in ways they haven’t before, culminating in an ambitious project that showcases the new sonic territory the band is heading in.
Tomberlin – i don’t know who needs to hear this… (Saddle Creek)
Toro y Moi – Mahal (Dead Oceans)
Toro y Moi’s seventh studio album, Mahal, is the boldest and most fascinating journey yet from musical mastermind Chaz Bear. The record spans genre and sound-encompassing the shaggy psychedelic rock of the 1960s and ’70s, and the airy sounds of 1990s mod-post-rock-taking listeners on an auditory expedition, as if they’re riding in the back of Bear’s Filipino jeepney that adorns the album’s cover.
Watain – The Agony & Ecstasy Of Watain (Nuclear Blast)
Seventh studio album from the black metal band.
The Weeknd – Dawn FM (Xo)
Indie store exclusive cassette edition featuring alternate cover art. Dawn FM is the fifth studio album by Canadian singer-songwriter The Weeknd. The album serves as a follow-up to The Weeknd’s fourth studio album, After Hours (2020). [A standard cassette edition featuring original artwork is also available.]
