Joe Ely – Driven To Drive CD/LP (Rack’Em/Thirty Tigers)

The wild, wide-open honky-tonk roadhouse sound of the Joe Ely Band gave their hometown of Lubbock its first music hero since Buddy Holly. The project stitches together recordings made at Spur Studios, his home recording facility outside of Austin, over several decades, assisted by musician/neighbors Joel Guzman on accordion, keyboardist Bill Guinn, singer Eddie Beethoven, and fiddler Richard Bowden. Chystabell & David Lynch – Cellophane Memoires CD/LP (Sacred Bones)
The origin of Chrystabell and David Lynch’s album Cellophane Memories comes from a vision that David experienced during a nighttime walk through a forest of tall trees, over the tops of which he saw a bright light. As he recalls it, the light became the lilt of Chrystabell’s voice and revealed a secret to him. For Cellophane Memories, the two have traveled through different portals. Elisions in time reappear over and over within Chrystabell’s vocals, which emerge and dissolve and loop back in layers of harmony and history. They are mantled by David’s, and late composer Angelo Badalamenti’s, orchestra of waldeinsamkeit-inspired strings, oneiric guitar glissandi and clouds of reverb, whose melodies are like the sensation of time pausing for a first kiss. Recorded at the acclaimed Minneapolis studio Sound 80 and released by Mountain Railroad Records, a small independent label based in the Upper Midwest, Honky-Tonk Man documented the musical world of a complex if largely misunderstood artist during the peak of his powers. Amestigon – Mysterious Realms [Reissue/1995] LP (Kyrck Prod. & Armour)
Austria has spawned a very distinct black metal cult that has always been removed from its German and French neighbors. Spearheaded by individualist acts such as Abigor and Summoning, it was inevitable that the evolutionary tree of this scene would develop branches in exploration of new creative directions. Amestigon are so closely related to the two bands previously mentioned both in terms of their revolving members and in style that they have become regarded as bonded by blood.
Ray Angry – Ray Angry Three 3xLP (JMI/Outside In Music)
“After JMI-1 and 2, we pretty much thought Ray can do any type of recording and make it great. That led us to think hard, always a dangerous proposition: we need to be as direct as possible at making our point that Ray is a top pianist! Solo piano. That great tradition from Art Tatum through Keith Jarrett always was the most powerful platform to elicit the “wows”. And so one day in the fall of 2022, Ray came to Reservoir Studios, sat down at the Steinway piano that was delivered for him (by Steinway) and barely got up for the next two hours. There are some experiences which defy words. Listening to Ray release a torrent of music quite unlike anything we’ve heard, was one such event. The pieces were part classical, part jazz, part pop and all Ray. We couldn’t bear to leave one note unreleased so… The first JMI box set, in which Ray will join Mr. Jarrett as a rare talent who can make you totally forget you’re hearing solo piano because his music suffuses the mind with less earthbound sensations.”
Ray Angry/David Murray/Questlove – Plumb 4xLP (Outside In Music)
“This is the big one. The culmination of something, we’re not sure what. Questlove’s association with David Murray goes back decades, to a live performance in London and an appearance on an early Roots record. Questlove’s association with Ray is somewhat more recent but no less profound. As Questlove expanded his achievements and fame from musician to entrepreneur to author to Academy Award winning filmmaker to cultural icon, he’s always highlighted and collaborated with creatives he deems worthy. After hearing about our label during his work with Steve Mandel, he decided WE were worthy of his time as one of his creative homes. So it was, that on one day in late Summer, 2022, Quest, David and Ray, with no rehearsal or planning, sat down in Reservoir Studios, took their places at their instruments, and for the next few hours locked into some of the most otherworldly music we’ve heard.”
Lloyd Banks – Halloween Havock IV: The 72nd Hour LP (Diggers Factory)

On Elijah, Blake invites his audience to delve into personal experiences and emotions, touching on themes of love and self-discovery.
Norman Blake – Pilgrimage To Rising Fawn LP (Iconic Ent. Group)
Norman Blake played guitar on as many noteworthy recordings as any human alive. His style, character and mastery have included countless musicians the world around. No doubt, when his career slowed down as far as studio work and the road life no longer called as it did before, his playing and creativity continued. Over the course of a year, John Carter Cash loaded up recording gear from The Cash Cabin Studio and took a pilgrimage to Rising Fawn, Georgia, just over the Tennessee border. In Norman and Nancy’s home, a wooden structure as ageless as the mountains above it, microphones were placed, and music was captured. Jamie Hartford joined the endeavor. Like John Carter’s father and mother, Jamie’s father John Hartford recorded and played music with Norman for many years on numerous projects. Jamey Johnson, one of the greatest voices of our time, also took the pilgrimage. Likewise, other master musicians, friends, and family, including Carlene Carter, Ana Cristina Cash and Joseph Cash contributed performances. This project is about continuing and strengthening connects with those we love and respect. It’s about not letting the time pass without uniting over things we mutually love. It’s about holding close. And the pilgrimage continues, with every note.

Captain Beefheart – Now Playing LP (Rhino/WEA)

The owner of a remarkable four-and-a-half-octave vocal range, he employed idiosyncratic rhythms, absurdist lyrics, and an unholy alliance of free jazz, Delta blues, latter-day classical music, and rock and roll to create a singular body of work virtually unrivaled in its daring and fluid creativity. While he never came even remotely close to mainstream success, Beefheart’s impact was incalculable, and his fingerprints were all over punk, new wave, and post-rock.

We both tried to do similar or almost identical things at the same point in time, each independently and without knowing anything about each other — each of us within his own culture.” This album was recorded in August 1993 at Townhall Charlottenburg in Berlin and was released in 1994 by FMP. Keaton Henson – Somnambulant Cycles LP (Mercury KX)
Somnambulant Cycles is an instrumental album exploring the feeling of subconscious states. Intended to create a sense of physiologically fertile calm, the calm where ideas come from, where emotions are felt but pass by like pedestrians. It is the quiet of night when our ancestors saw spirits over the water but felt a strange comfort rather than fear. The Stooges – Now Playing LP (Elektra/WEA)
Orange colorway. During the psychedelic haze of the late ’60s, the grimy, noisy, and relentlessly bleak rock & roll of the Stooges was conspicuously out of time. Like the Velvet Underground, the Stooges revealed the underside of sex, drugs, and rock & roll, showing all the grime beneath the myth. The Stooges, however, weren’t nearly as cerebral as the Velvets. Taking their cue from the over-amplified pounding of British blues, the primal raunch of American garage rock, and the psychedelic rock (as well as the audience-baiting) of the Doors, the Stooges were raw, immediate, and vulgar.

Ween – Chocolate And Cheese [Reissue/1994] 3xLP (Elektra/WEA)
Limited triple vinyl LP pressing. A brilliant fusion of gonzo pop, 1994’s Chocolate And Cheese is arguably Ween’s finest moment. The album proved once and for all that along with their twisted sense of humor and wide musical vocabulary, Dean and Gene Ween are impressive songwriters. Over the course of Chocolate And Cheese, Ween explore virtually every permutation of pop, rock, soul, and funk in their own unique (and very “brown”) way. The Well I Fell Into, the eighth full-length from Why?, is Wolf at his most cohesive and poignant.

Young, a Southerner, recorded more than a dozen distinctive albums, but none was more fully realized than his 1975 album Honky-Tonk Man. Recorded at the acclaimed Minneapolis studio Sound 80 and released by Mountain Railroad Records, a small independent label based in the Upper Midwest, Honky-Tonk Man documented the musical world of a complex if largely misunderstood artist during the peak of his powers.
