Ashnikko – Weedkiller CD/LP (Parolophone)
Debut album Weedkiller is a collection of irresistible songs that perfect the bold, genre-blending sound that has defined Ashnikko’s work to date. While the acclaimed 2021 mixtape Demidevil showcased a head-on approach, directly tackling themes of sexual revolution and revenge, Weedkiller is more allegorical. A half-concept album set in a dystopian future, the Weedkiller universe that Ashnikko has created tells the story of a Fae civilization occupied and destroyed by machines that feed on organic matter where the faerie protagonist seeks revenge by becoming part machine – a poetic commentary on environmental disaster and the rapid evolution of technology, while also confronting real-world issues from sexual empowerment to tech warfare, as there are many sexual tech advances in the present now, as this excellent male masturbator you can get online. Full of equal parts naked vulnerability and joyful rebellion, Weedkiller gives a thundering voice to the oppressed. [An indie store exclusive vinyl edition featuring an alternate cover is available.]
Asking Alexandria – Where Do We Go From Here? CD/Cassette (Better Noise Music)
The tenth album for British hard-rock band Asking Alexandria, releasing in their 15th year as a band. A retrospective project of sorts that saw band members re-visit their previous releases and draw inspiration from their most popular and successful songs from their discography. Fans will be ecstatic to hear that Where Do We Go From Here? features some of the hardest, loudest new music that Asking Alexandria has released in recent memory. [A limited-edition aqua blue vinyl colorway is due October 13.]
Be Your Own Pet – Mommy CD/LP (Third Man)
Nashville, Tennessee, garage rock group Be Your Own Pet was signed as teenagers to the prestigious XL in the UK and Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace label in the US, with whom they released two widely acclaimed albums. They went on to tour with the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Sonic Youth, Le Tigre etc. and have been cited as influences for groups such as Paramore and Big Joanie. “The desire to kick against the constraints of buttoned-up, grown-up, conventional, cis-het, white, patriarchal society has served as potent fuel for generations of performers. Back in the mid-2000s, Be Your Own Pet’s frenetically tuneful punk sneered at the trappings of adulthood with snottily on-the-nose wit.” – NPR [An indie store exclusive green color vinyl pressing is available.]
Jaimie Branch – Fly Or Die Fly Or Die Fly Or Die ((world war)) CD/LP (International Anthem Recording Co.)
In July of 2022, just one month before Jaimie Branch’s death sent shockwaves around the world, the trumpet player and composer was in Chicago at International Anthem (IARC) studios putting finishing touches on an album. It was a suite of music she had composed and then recorded with her flagship ensemble, Fly or Die, over the course of a residency at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, Nebraska. In her wake, the album was near complete, with only mixing tweaks, final titles, and artwork to be fully realized. In the months following, her family (led by sister Kate Branch), her band (Jason Ajemian, Lester St. Louis, and Chad Taylor), and her collaborators at IARC (engineers Dave Vettraino and David Allen, comrades Alejandro Ayala and Scott McNiece) banded together to gather memories, texts, emails, photographs, artwork and fragments belonging to Jaimie to light the path forward. The goal was always to do what Jaimie would have done. [An indie store exclusive vinyl pressing is available.]
Islands – And That’s Why Dolphins Lost Their Legs CD//LP (Elf)
If Islands’ last record, (2021’s Islomania) was a Saturday Night Fever dream, then the follow up – 2023’s And That’s Why Dolphins Lost Their Legs – is the Sunday Morning comedown. Taking a giant leap forward, replete with addictive hooks at every turn, Dolphins (the ninth record in the catalogue), stands out as the strongest and most articulate Islands record yet. Nick Thorburn and crew manage to tap into both the pain and the joy of living, (sometimes within the very same breath), while musically stripping things down to their simplest element: a bouncing bassline, a snappy kick and snare, or a persistent, hooky guitar line. Though Dolphins is arguably their biggest musical departure (which is saying something, coming from a band that has constantly reinvented their sound from album to album), the DNA of Thorburn’s first band The Unicorns can clearly be heard throughout. [A limited-edition red color vinyl pressing is available.]
Harold López-Nussa – Timba a la Americana CD/LP (Blue Note)
Pianist and composer Harold López-Nussa has been steadily building a global following in jazz and beyond over the past two decades since winning the prestigious Montreux Jazz Piano Competition in 2005. Born into a musical family in Havana, Cuba, his music reflects the full range and richness of the Cuban musical tradition with its distinctive combination of classical, folkloric, and popular elements, as well as its embrace of improvisation. With the release of his Blue Note Records debut, Timba a la Americana, López-Nussa reaches a career milestone with a vibrant album teeming with joy and pathos that was inspired by the pianist’s recent decision to leave his Cuban homeland and begin a new life in France.
Becca Mancari – Left Hand CD/LP (Captured Tracks)
Since moving to Nashville to start their music career in 2012, Becca Mancari has been lauded for
their dexterous songwriting and prodigious guitar playing. Their sophomore album The Greatest Part, released in 2020, was an indie rock opus that garnered acclaim from The New York Times, NPR, and more. After its release, however, Mancari was despairing. An illness in their family, coupled with a realization that their alcohol dependency had become untenable, led Mancari to begin the hard work of taking ownership of their existence by mending broken relationships and investing in their mental health. “I didn’t realize it then, but looking back, I was a passenger in my own life,” Mancari says. The transformative period of self-reckoning was the catalyst that ultimately steered Mancari to write and produce their triumphant new album, Left Hand. While Left Hand came out of a dark period in Mancari’s life, the album is anything but. Wide-open and welcoming, the music beckons all listeners, encouraging community among strangers. [A limited-edition milky clear vinyl pressing is available.]
Old Crow Medicine Show – Jubilee CD/LP (ATO)
As multiple Grammy-winners, Old Crow Medicine Show celebrates their 25th anniversary. Their new album, Jubilee, finds the band producing alongside Matt Ross-Spang (Jason Isbell, St. Paul & The Broken Bones). The record features a return cameo from OCMS co-founder Willie Watson as well as appearances from legend Mavis Staples and rising star Sierra Ferrell. The result encompasses everything from jug-band tunes to Irish folk songs to exultant gospel jams.
Spanish Love Songs – No Joy CD/LP (Pure Noise)
“Known for creating gut-wrenching songs that revolve around death, the state of the world, and other fun, depressing subjects, Spanish Love Songs are coming in strong with their new album No Joy. Diverting from the punk sound of their previous albums, No Joy has a more ‘80s new wave feel that succeeds in juxtaposing soul-crushing lyrics with fun, synth-forward instrumentals that will make you want to dance your sorrow away. This album is great, and if you’re a fan of Spanish Love Songs, you’ll love it.” – Ryan Curtiss, New Noise Magazine [A limited-edition clear w/ silver/black twist color vinyl pressing is available.]
Trippie Redd – A Love Letter To You 5 CD/2xLP (10k/Capitol)
Emo-rapper Trippie Redd releases his highly anticipated album, A Love Letter To You 5. “An eclectic hip-hop talent, Trippie Redd boasts a new age creativity, forever pushing the boundaries with his music. A Love Letter To You 5 succeeds its earlier four counterparts, the multi-platinum certified love-fueled mixtape series continually resonating. The mixtape kicks off with an asserting offering from Redd and Corbin (fka Spooky Black); Corbin a cult classic name who’s not privy to regular releases, the track shifts towards him for an isolated moment. Despite this being A Love Letter To You 5, Redd does well to continuously write raw relevant music. The mixtape is vulnerable and showcases a special level of artistry as he delves into several different pockets of love songs.” – Shanté Collier-McDermott, Clash Music [A limited-edition red/black swirl color vinyl pressing is available.]
Turnpike Troubadours – A Cat In The Rain CD/LP (Bossier City)
The Turnpike Troubadours are as storied as they come. The band was formed in 2005 and throughout the years they have released five studio albums, travelled the globe, and amassed a fan base that has supported them through the good times and the bad. In 2019, the band went on an indefinite hiatus and stepped away from the stage until 2021. Time away from the spotlight allowed the band to refocus, and rumors began to spread that maybe new music was along the way. With these ten new songs, Turnpike Troubadours is back with a refreshed perspective on their authentic songwriting and signature foot-stomping sound. [An indie store exclusive opaque brown color vinyl pressing is available.]
Cindy Wilson – Realms CD/LP (Kill Rock Stars)
Cindy Wilson has always been on the forefront of music’s cutting-edge: As a founding member of The B-52’s, she was a pioneer of the new wave sound that redefined music in the 1970s and ‘80s. Cindy is known for her distinctly melodic voice and her remarkable ability to deliver powerful emotions in her music. She has made a fresh name for herself that extends beyond her band’s legacy, establishing herself as a singular force in her own right. Nowhere is this more readily apparent than on Realms, Wilson’s spirited sophomore studio album and her most ambitious effort to date. Pop in style and indie at heart, Realms is the next new wave of Wilson’s already storied legacy. [A limited-edition turquoise color vinyl pressing is available.]

Emeralds – Does It Look Like I’m Here? [Reissue/2010] CD/2xLP+MP3 (Ghostly Int’l)
In the late 2000s a sprawling catalog of what is now genre-defining music was emanating from an unlikely place. Cleveland, Ohio has a broad reputation for many things, but in the aughts, psyche expanding Kosmische wasn’t necessarily Cleveland’s calling card… until Emeralds. The trio of John Elliott, Steve Hauschildt, and Mark McGuire had released a profusion of limited-run cassettes, CD-Rs, and vinyl titles that had been passed around basement shows and then migrated to niche music communities online, creating a unique kind of murmur at the height of the DIY blog era. [A limited-edition ‘ectoplasm’ color vinyl pressing is available.]

Teenagers alternates between signature songs like the masterful opening song, as well as unsuspected romantic and nostalgic songs, epic and flamboyant tracks, tracks with liberating harmonies, sensational electronic swirls, pop gems and sumptuous introspective tracks.
Hannah Georgas – I’d Be Lying If I Said I Didn’t Care CD/LP (Real Kind)
Locked down in a small flat in downtown Toronto and perpetually grounded, Georgas decided to uproot her life in the city to a carriage house in the countryside, three hours east. Despite her pride in what she had created with The National’s Aaron Desner, her faith in music in this new, unforgiving reality had started to falter. She realised in this moment that the one thing she could lean into was her own talent and work-ethic, after all her greatest ambition had always been to self-produce an album, and this was the moment. [A limited-edition opaque light green color vinyl pressing is available.]
A Giant Dog – Bite CD/LP+MP3 (Merge)
Bite is a concept album, concerning characters who find themselves moving in and out of a virtual reality called Avalonia. A Giant Dog’s first album of original songs since 2017’s Toy, Bite finds the band at their peak as musicians, challenging themselves with more complex arrangements and subject matter that forced them out of their heads and into those of the characters who occupy this supposed paradise. Themes of addiction, gender fluidity, living ethically in a capitalist society, physical autonomy, avarice, grief, and consent bubble beneath the promised happiness of Avalonia. The songs on Bite are full of bombast, at turns calling to mind the spacefaring operatic rock of Electric Light Orchestra and the high drama of an Ennio Morricone film score. [An indie store exclusive green vinyl colorway is available.]
Bebel Gilberto – João CD/LP (PIAS America)
Bebel Gilberto’s João is a collection of songs made famous by her father João Gilberto, widely regarded as the “father of Bossa Nova music. Says Bebel, “João is a love letter to my father. Since my first album I’ve never really covered any of my dad’s music. Now it’s time to present to the public the songs from João Gilberto that have influenced me since I was born – and even before”.

Hiss Golden Messenger – Jump For Joy CD/LP+MP3 (Merge)
The songs that make up Jump For Joy – the sharpest and most autobiographical that MC Taylor has written under the Hiss Golden Messenger name – read as a sort of epistolary, postcards between the present-day songwriter and his alias Michael Crow, a teenaged dreamer very much like Taylor himself, who trips his way through the 14 tunes that make up the record. [An indie store exclusive black & orange color vinyl pressing is available.]
Hot Milk – A Call To The Void CD/LP (Sony)
For some, it might feel like a long time coming but Hot Milk always knew that when the time came to make their debut album, they had to be ready for it. It will be their loudest statement yet of who they are and what they stand for, an opportunity to show the world what they are made of. Tracks on the debut album walk on a tightrope between the humorous and the serious, brimming with what might be called positive nihilism. They’re not so much finding the light in the dark as they are laughing, because if they don’t, they’ll cry. With A Call To The Void, Hot Milk is set to launch themselves into the upper echelons of the British rock scene.
Incantation – Unholy Deification CD/LP (Relapse)
Edified over three-plus decades of experience, Unholy Deification is Incantation’s 13th full-length album. Validated by peers seasoned and new, the band is more vital than ever – the lineup, featuring founding guitarist/vocalist John McEntee, drummer Kyle Severn, bassist Chuck Sherwood, and guitarist Luke Shively, displays death metal know-how and the power of determination. [A limited-edition blue splatter color vinyl pressing is available.]

[A limited-edition red color vinyl pressing is available.]
Jenny O. – Spectra CD/LP (Mama Bird)
“Spectra refers to the many ways we identify. It references our multitudes, the ways we identify and experience life, as a nebula. Nuance, variation, not one thing or another, but somewhere between, unfixed, in all directions. Spectra explores connectivity and contains overt expressions of love for others, oneself, and nature. It is my favorite record I have made and my most joyful.” -Jenny [An indie store exclusive pink vinyl colorway is available.]

Kibi James – Delusions CD/LP/Cassette (Bayonet)
Atlanta three-piece Kibi James – Mari (guitar, keys), MJ Corless (bass) and Pomi Abebe (drums) – join forces in crafting intoxicatingly dreamy melodies; their soft, siren-like voices sweeping you into their world as they bilingually share reflections on love in its many forms – romantic, familial, self – but most prominently the love that comes from their friendship. Co-produced, recorded and mixed by Drew Vandenberg (Faye Webster, SPELLLING, Toro y Moi) at Chase Park Studios in Athens, GA, and mastered by Heba Kadry, Delusions is laden with vividly lush portraits of the places they call home – Atlanta, their music community, their physical house, and the sense of home they have in one another. Tony Scott & The Indonesian Allstars – Djanger Bali [Reissue/1967] CD/LP (MPS)
Indonesia and jazz? Not so far-fetched. Improvisation is a part of traditional gamelan, and modal playing goes back 1000 years; jazz began seriously delving into modes with Miles Davis in the 1950’s. US clarinet icon Tony Scott proselytized jazz during his six-year sojourn in Asia, and in so doing brought Asian music masters, including players on this album, into the jazz world. Down Beat called pianist Bubi Chen “The Art Tatum of Asia”, and saxophonist Marjono, whose influences include John Coltrane, is an authority on traditional Balinese and Javanese music.

Their stunning, self-titled debut EP was originally released as a Record Store Day exclusive in 2022. Fraser and Reece’s early careers in some of the world’s most heralded musical groups are well documented. Elizabeth, the unforgettable voice of Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil’s “Song To The Siren,” is also internationally recognized for her vocal contributions to Massive Attack’s trail-blazing Mezzanine LP – most notably their biggest hit, “Teardrop”. Damon, the long-time drummer with political art-rock giants Massive Attack, also spent the ’90s as a member of Spiritualized and Echo and the Bunnymen. He has also recorded and performed with Baxter Dury, Goldfrapp, The Flies, and Butch Vig’s 5 Billion In Diamonds and many more. The songs on Sun’s Signature have been ruminating in the background of Fraser and Reece’s lives in some form for 20+ years, ever since Cocteau Twins broke up in 1997. It marks the first artistic collaboration between these life and musical partners that isn’t a film score or soundtrack. [A limited-edition yellow color vinyl pressing is available.]

She has made a fresh name for herself that extends beyond her band’s legacy, establishing herself as a singular force in her own right. Titi Bakorta – Molende LP (Nyege Nyege Tapes)
Titi Bakorta almost didn’t make it. Born in and raised in Kinshasa, the Congolese multi-instrumentalist was on his way to Uganda when he fell off the boat as it traversed the mighty Congo River. Unable to swim, Bakorta was saved by a friend who dragged him to the closest city Kisangani, where he was unexpectedly acquainted with local singer Dancer Papalas. Soon they were performing in bands together, traveling across the continents and settling in Tanzania, South Sudan, and Dubai – they even appeared in front of General Defao, the beloved Congolese vocalist who fronted legendary soukous bands Grand Zaiko Wawa, Choc Stars and Big Stars. Now based in Kampala, Bakorta offers his own unique take on Congolese pop and folk sounds, weaving traditional elements through a psychedelic lattice of guitar loops, mangled voices and eccentric beatbox rhythms on his debut full-length, Molende.

Spinners – Now Playing LP (Atlantic)
Filed under ‘S’, The Spinners can indeed be described with many ‘S’ words: sweet, sophisticated, symphonic, soulful among them. The result is a self-realized collection of songs that saw the band borrowing vintage gear, bringing in friends in the form of members from 311 vocalist/turntablist Doug “SA” Martinez and Softcult and incorporating tasteful pop sensibilities to craft a collection of songs that redefines the band’s sound while staying true to their guitar-driven roots.

The Undertones – Positive Touch [Reissue/1983] LP (BMG)
The Undertones – The Sin Of Pride [Reissue/1983] LP (BMG)
The Undertones formed in Derry, Northern Ireland, in 1975 and released their third album Positive Touch in 1981 which peaked at #17 in the UK Charts. Positive Touch marks the departure from speedy pop-punk of their first two debut albums though the songwriting remains tight and lively with plenty of hooks that keep you listening. The punk-derived energy is almost entirely gone, replaced by a more varied and softer instrumental palette that features new textures like piano (courtesy of Paul Carrack, then in Squeeze) recorders and brass instrumentation. The Sin Of Pride was by far the most exploratory album the Undertones ever issued. For their fourth album, the band injected more post-punk dance into their growing soul sound and so the album is looser and more focused on mood and groove than their previous titles.

Standard black vinyl pressing of this 2022 album. Nowadays, voice memos, videos, and pictures chronicle our lives in real-time. We trace where we’ve been and reveal where we’re going. However, Suki Waterhouse catalogs the most intimate, formative, and significant moments of her life through songs. You might recognize her name or her work as singer, songwriter, actress but you’ll really get to know the multi-faceted artist through her music. Memories of unrequited love, fits of longing, instances of anxiety, and unfiltered snapshots interlock like puzzle pieces into a mosaic of well-worn country, ‘90s-style alternative, and unassuming pop. She writes the kind of tunes meant to be grafted onto dusty old vinyl from your favorite vintage record store, yet perfect for a sun-soaked festival stage. These compositions comprise her debut album, I Can’t Let Go.

Phil Woods – Rights Of Swing [Reissue/1961] LP (Candid)
When he first came on the scene, Phil Woods was often referred to as “The New Bird,” in a nod to the legendary Charlie Parker. A testament to his genius on the saxophone to be sure. But while obviously indebted to Parker – as all modern jazz saxophonists of a certain era were – there is no question that Phil Woods was an original. After earning a degree in music from Juilliard in the early 1950’s, Woods found himself in the orbit of the great Quincy Jones. Rights Of Swing, his ninth album as a band leader, consists entirely of Woods’ five-part “Rights Of Swing Suite”. An ambitious large-scale composition based solidly on jazz traditions.
