The tenth album for British hard-rock band Asking Alexandria, releasing in their 15th year as a band. A retrospective project of sorts that saw band members re-visit their previous releases and draw inspiration from their most popular and successful songs from their discography. Fans will be ecstatic to hear that Where Do We Go From Here? features some of the hardest, loudest new music that Asking Alexandria has released in recent memory. Be Your Own Pet – Mommy CD/LP (Third Man)

Nashville, Tennessee, garage rock group Be Your Own Pet was signed as teenagers to the prestigious XL in the UK and Thurston Moore’s Ecstatic Peace label in the US, with whom they released two widely acclaimed albums. They went on to tour with the likes of Arctic Monkeys, Sonic Youth, Le Tigre etc. and have been cited as influences for groups such as Paramore and Big Joanie. “The desire to kick against the constraints of buttoned-up, grown-up, conventional, cis-het, white, patriarchal society has served as potent fuel for generations of performers. Jaimie Branch – Fly Or Die Fly Or Die Fly Or Die ((world war)) CD/LP (International Anthem Recording Co.)

In July of 2022, just one month before Jaimie Branch’s death sent shockwaves around the world, the trumpet player and composer was in Chicago at International Anthem (IARC) studios putting finishing touches on an album. It was a suite of music she had composed and then recorded with her flagship ensemble, Fly or Die, over the course of a residency at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts in Omaha, Nebraska. In her wake, the album was near complete, with only mixing tweaks, final titles, and artwork to be fully realized. In the months following, her family (led by sister Kate Branch), her band (Jason Ajemian, Lester St. Louis, and Chad Taylor), and her collaborators at IARC (engineers Dave Vettraino and David Allen, comrades Alejandro Ayala and Scott McNiece) banded together to gather memories, texts, emails, photographs, artwork and fragments belonging to Jaimie to light the path forward. Islands – And That’s Why Dolphins Lost Their Legs CD//LP (Elf)

If Islands’ last record, (2021’s Islomania) was a Saturday Night Fever dream, then the follow up – 2023’s And That’s Why Dolphins Lost Their Legs – is the Sunday Morning comedown. Taking a giant leap forward, replete with addictive hooks at every turn, Dolphins (the ninth record in the catalogue), stands out as the strongest and most articulate Islands record yet. Nick Thorburn and crew manage to tap into both the pain and the joy of living, (sometimes within the very same breath), while musically stripping things down to their simplest element: a bouncing bassline, a snappy kick and snare, or a persistent, hooky guitar line. Though Dolphins is arguably their biggest musical departure (which is saying something, coming from a band that has constantly reinvented their sound from album to album), the DNA of Thorburn’s first band The Unicorns can clearly be heard throughout. Harold López-Nussa – Timba a la Americana CD/LP (Blue Note)

Pianist and composer Harold López-Nussa has been steadily building a global following in jazz and beyond over the past two decades since winning the prestigious Montreux Jazz Piano Competition in 2005. López-Nussa has released nine acclaimed albums and captivated audiences across the world with his thrilling performances at esteemed venues and jazz festivals. Born into a musical family in Havana, Cuba, his music reflects the full range and richness of the Cuban musical tradition with its distinctive combination of classical, folkloric, and popular elements, as well as its embrace of improvisation. With the release of his Blue Note Records debut, Timba a la Americana, López-Nussa reaches a career milestone with a vibrant album teeming with joy and pathos that was inspired by the pianist’s recent decision to leave his Cuban homeland and begin a new life in France.

Becca Mancari – Left Hand CD/LP (Captured Tracks)

Since moving to Nashville to start their music career in 2012, Becca Mancari has been lauded for

their dexterous songwriting and prodigious guitar playing. Their sophomore album The Greatest Part, released in 2020, was an indie rock opus that garnered acclaim from The New York Times, NPR, and more. After its release, however, Mancari was despairing. An illness in their family, coupled with a realization that their alcohol dependency had become untenable, led Mancari to begin the hard work of taking ownership of their existence by mending broken relationships and investing in their mental health. “I didn’t realize it then, but looking back, I was a passenger in my own life,” Mancari says. The transformative period of self-reckoning was the catalyst that ultimately steered Mancari to write and produce their triumphant new album, Left Hand. As multiple Grammy-winners, Old Crow Medicine Show celebrates their 25th anniversary. The record features a return cameo from OCMS co-founder Willie Watson as well as appearances from legend Mavis Staples and rising star Sierra Ferrell. French 79 – Teenagers CD/LP (Alter K)

After an international tour of over 100 dates, French 79 unveils his third album, Teenagers. This opus gives us such unique and strong sensations, partly because the synths were recorded at Jean-Michel Jarre’s studio in Paris and the tracks were mixed and mastered by Damien Quintard at Miraval studios. Teenagers alternates between signature songs like the masterful opening song, as well as unsuspected romantic and nostalgic songs, epic and flamboyant tracks, tracks with liberating harmonies, sensational electronic swirls, pop gems and sumptuous introspective tracks.

Hannah Georgas – I’d Be Lying If I Said I Didn’t Care CD/LP (Real Kind)

Locked down in a small flat in downtown Toronto and perpetually grounded, Georgas decided to uproot her life in the city to a carriage house in the countryside, three hours east. Bite is a concept album, concerning characters who find themselves moving in and out of a virtual reality called Avalonia. A Giant Dog’s first album of original songs since 2017’s Toy, Bite finds the band at their peak as musicians, challenging themselves with more complex arrangements and subject matter that forced them out of their heads and into those of the characters who occupy this supposed paradise. Themes of addiction, gender fluidity, living ethically in a capitalist society, physical autonomy, avarice, grief, and consent bubble beneath the promised happiness of Avalonia. Bebel Gilberto – João CD/LP (PIAS America)

Bebel Gilberto’s João is a collection of songs made famous by her father João Gilberto, widely regarded as the “father of Bossa Nova music. João Gilberto passed away in 2019 after a 70-year career in music. Bebel began singing with him as a small child and the songs she sings on this new album have been with her all her life. Says Bebel, “João is a love letter to my father. Since my first album I’ve never really covered any of my dad’s music. Now it’s time to present to the public the songs from João Gilberto that have influenced me since I was born – and even before”.

Kool & The Gang – People Just Wanna Have Fun CD (BFD)

With six decades of hits, the internationally celebrated group continues to tour the world. The band is led by founding members Robert “Kool” Bell (bassist) and George “Funky” Brown (keyboardist, drummer & producer of this album), who has a new book coming out called Too Hot: Kool & the Gang & Me. Continuing to release music that makes the good times better and the bad times more bearable, People Just Wanna Have Fun is be the band’s 34th studio album, and features some of the last studio work by founding horn players, Kool’s brother Ronald “Khalis” Bell and Dennis “D.T.” Thomas, who passed in 2020 and 2021, respectively. US clarinet icon Tony Scott proselytized jazz during his six-year sojourn in Asia, and in so doing brought Asian music masters, including players on this album, into the jazz world. Sun’s Signature is the current project of vocalist Elizabeth Fraser and percussionist Damon Reece. Fraser and Reece’s early careers in some of the world’s most heralded musical groups are well documented. Elizabeth, the unforgettable voice of Cocteau Twins and This Mortal Coil’s “Song To The Siren,” is also internationally recognized for her vocal contributions to Massive Attack’s trail-blazing Mezzanine LP – most notably their biggest hit, “Teardrop”. Titi Bakorta – Molende LP (Nyege Nyege Tapes)

Titi Bakorta almost didn’t make it. Born in and raised in Kinshasa, the Congolese multi-instrumentalist was on his way to Uganda when he fell off the boat as it traversed the mighty Congo River. Unable to swim, Bakorta was saved by a friend who dragged him to the closest city Kisangani, where he was unexpectedly acquainted with local singer Dancer Papalas. Soon they were performing in bands together, traveling across the continents and settling in Tanzania, South Sudan, and Dubai – they even appeared in front of General Defao, the beloved Congolese vocalist who fronted legendary soukous bands Grand Zaiko Wawa, Choc Stars and Big Stars. Now based in Kampala, Bakorta offers his own unique take on Congolese pop and folk sounds, weaving traditional elements through a psychedelic lattice of guitar loops, mangled voices and eccentric beatbox rhythms on his debut full-length, Molende.

Diego Gaeta – Fearlessly Accessing The Divine Spirit Of Freedom LP (Preference)

Fearlessly Accessing the Divine Spirit From Here On Out is the vinyl debut from up-and-coming pianist, composer, and producer Diego Gaeta. He has previously released projects as Club Diego and with the trio Human Error Club (whose members Mekala Session and Jesse Justice helped produce this record). He has quickly become a fixture in several Los Angeles musical environments, working with Lionmilk, The Pan Afrikan Peoples Arkestra, Carlos Niño, Black Nile among others. This album is a synthesis of these many L.A. environments, and carries chamber, jazz, ambient, and folk influences, ultimately giving it an uncategorizable feel like works by Arthur Verocai or David Axelrod. Gaeta’s dream band for his ideas would be a nine-piece ensemble or “nonet”, which was finally assembled in the summer of 2021.

Tracked in 1977, this bundle of never-before-released basement demos throw Jimmy Jan Harris’ beloved Philadelphia Sound into an unfinished root cellar, pelting it with Clavinet attacks, disco skats, and infectious hooks. Named for the street address of its underground uptown genesis, 1514 Oliver Avenue (Basement) is an organic alternative to a late- ’70s Prince songbook gone increasingly synthetic.

Montrose – Now Playing LP (Rhino)

Montrose was a California-based hard rock band. The band originally featured Ronnie Montrose on guitar and future solo artist and Van Halen frontman Sammy Hagar. Rounding out the original foursome were bassist Bill Church and drummer Denny Carmassi.

Kip Moore – Wild Ones (Deluxe Edition) 2xLP (MCA Nashville)

Kip Moore’s second studio album, Wild Ones, was released in 2015 and features 16 tracks, including the singles “I’m To Blame” and “Running For You”. This Deluxe Edition double-LP set is pressed on crystal blue color vinyl on contains the bonus tracks “What I Do”, “Backseat” and “Burn The Whole World Down”.

Mudhoney – Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge [Reissue/1991] 2xLP (Matador)

Standard black vinyl reissue. By going back to basics with Every Good Boy Deserves Fudge, Mudhoney flipped conventional wisdom. Not for the first time – or the last – they would be vindicated. A month after release in July 1991, the album entered the UK album chart at Number 34 (five weeks later, Nirvana’s Nevermind entered at 36) and went on to sell 75,000 copies worldwide. A more meaningful measure of success, however, lay in its revitalization of the band, casting a touchstone for the future. The record is a major chapter in Mudhoney’s ongoing story, the moral of which has to be: when in doubt, fudge it.

Mutiny – Black Hat Daddy & The Silver Comb Gang LP (Regrooved)

Jerome Brailey, funk drummer and former member of George Clinton’s Parliament Funkadelic, is most famous for co-writing Parliament’s 1976 gold hit single “Give Up The Funk (Tear The Roof Of The Sucker)”. But thanks to poor management, in 1978 he and several other members mutinied and left the group. That same year Jerome gathered his own crew, dubbed them Mutiny, and issued two classic funk albums on Columbia Records: Mutiny On The Mamaship (1979) and Funk Plus The One (1980). A third album entitled Black Hat Daddy & The Silver Comb Gang was scheduled for release on Jerome’s own label J. Romeo in 1981 but, due to unforeseen circumstances never saw an official release, although a handful of tracks were included on Mutiny’s 1983 album A Night Out With The Boys. [A limited-edition gold colorway is available.]

Notorious B.I.G. – Now Playing LP (Atlantic)

Christopher George Latore Wallace (May 21, 1972 – March 9, 1997), better known by his stage names The Notorious B.I.G, Biggie, or Biggie Smalls, was an American rapper. He is consistently ranked as one of the greatest and most influential rappers of all time. He was noted for his “loose, easy flow,” dark semi-autobiographical lyrics, and storytelling abilities. He has certified sales of 17 million units in the United States.

Nu Vintage – Vibrations In Color LP/Cassette (Cold Busted)

Bay Area beatmaker Nu Vintage has signed on with Cold Busted to transmit Vibrations In Color, a 14-track album displaying the many moods and hues of this multifaceted producer. Nu Vintage is known for his many Bandcamp digital ‘beat tapes’ as well as releases on Inner Ocean and Dezi-Belle Records. He builds on these past accomplishments to construct the new album, expanding the shades from his heady rhythm-jazz palette to new dynamic points in the spectrum. Vibrations In Color sonically glistens with a muted neon glow to accompany a slow midnight cruise through the naked city.

Davy Jones Locker sits uniquely among the albums of The Ocean Blue as a bridge from their major label years in the 1990s to their present status as an indie band. Sam Posford – Flux & Contemplation: Portrait Of An Artist In Isolation 2xLP (Twisted)

The master sonic sculptor Posford has crafted one of his most innovative albums in his 30 years of groundbreaking electronic production. The Undertones formed in Derry, Northern Ireland, in 1975 and released their third album Positive Touch in 1981 which peaked at #17 in the UK Charts. Positive Touch marks the departure from speedy pop-punk of their first two debut albums though the songwriting remains tight and lively with plenty of hooks that keep you listening. The punk-derived energy is almost entirely gone, replaced by a more varied and softer instrumental palette that features new textures like piano (courtesy of Paul Carrack, then in Squeeze) recorders and brass instrumentation. The Sin Of Pride was by far the most exploratory album the Undertones ever issued. For their fourth album, the band injected more post-punk dance into their growing soul sound and so the album is looser and more focused on mood and groove than their previous titles.

Phil Woods – Rights Of Swing [Reissue/1961] LP (Candid)

When he first came on the scene, Phil Woods was often referred to as “The New Bird,” in a nod to the legendary Charlie Parker. A testament to his genius on the saxophone to be sure. But while obviously indebted to Parker – as all modern jazz saxophonists of a certain era were – there is no question that Phil Woods was an original. After earning a degree in music from Juilliard in the early 1950’s, Woods found himself in the orbit of the great Quincy Jones. Rights Of Swing, his ninth album as a band leader, consists entirely of Woods’ five-part “Rights Of Swing Suite”. An ambitious large-scale composition based solidly on jazz traditions.
