The album was produced by The Boxmasters, Billy Bob Thornton and J.D. Andrew, who also wrote every song. Jana Mila – Chameleon CD/LP (New West)
When the Amsterdam singer-songwriter Jana Mila (pronounced Yah-nuh MEE- lah) began writing a song called “Chameleon,” she thought she was writing about someone else—a friend who seemed to be changing her colors to please other people. “But the more I lived with the song, the more I felt like I was writing about myself,” she admits. “Doesn’t everybody try to reflect other people? Don’t I change my own colors in order to be accepted? Especially when you’re young, you can lose yourself in other people if you don’t know who you are.” That is the central idea behind her debut album, also titled Chameleon, which introduces Mila as an artist deeply committed to self-reckoning and self-possession. Our innate desire to belong and to be loved can lead to a kind of self-annihilation, making us strangers to ourselves. Writing songs is her means of finding and sustaining her identity. AWOLNATION – The Phantom Five CD/LP (Thank You For Listening Entertainment)

The number 5 is associated with independence and individualism, major life changes and experiences, all of which influenced the resulting album. It’s a collection of ten songs that highlights every different impulse and urge Bruno has learned to master with AWOLNATION in a cohesive, anthemic pastiche of modern music. The Bug Club – On The Intricate Inner Workings Of The System CD/LP (Sub Pop)
The way you’re saying it, “prolific” isn’t the right word for The Bug Club. You’ve got to say it with the trademark Welsh lilt and pay due homage to this inimitable band’s origins in the renowned hit factory of Caldicot, South Wales. Do that, and you’re about right with how to summarize a group who’ve released ten singles, two albums, two EPs, three things nobody knew how to describe, and an album under a different band’s name, all since 2021, and while playing 200+ gigs a year.
Initially comprising the songwriting core of Sam Willmett (vocals/guitar) and Tilly Harris (vocals/bass) with Dan Matthew (drums), The Bug Club started plying their trade in 2016. They were signed by UK label Bingo Records in Autumn of 2020. BBC 6 Music’s Marc Riley was an early champion, hammering the single, booking the band in for a session as soon as it was allowed, and rightfully praising songwriters capable of singing the whole alphabet in a two-minute song and making it work. Third LP On The Intricate Inner Workings Of The System sees the band serve up a beefy slab of their specialty Modern-Lovers-meets-Nuggets garage rock. [A smoke color vinyl pressing is available.]
The Cactus Blossoms – Every Time I Think About You CD/LP (Walkie Talkie)

All sorts of emotional colors shine through. [A bronze color vinyl pressing is available.]
Caleb Caudle – Sweet Critters CD/LP (Caleb Caudle)

Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds – Wild God CD/LP (Play It Again Sam)
Nick Cave & The Bad Seeds return with new album, Wild God. Across the ten tracks of the album, the band dances between convention and experimentation, taking left-turns and detours that heighten the rich imagery and emotion in Cave’s soul-stirring narratives. It is the sound of a group emboldened by reconnection and taking flight. There are moments that touch fondly upon the Bad Seeds’ past, but they are fleeting, and serve only to imbue the relentless and restless forward motion of the band. [A white color vinyl pressing is available.]

Supersempfft – Roboterwerke [Reissue/1979] CD/LP (Bureau B)
Operating at the unlikely nexus between creative studio and sixth form common room, and fusing all the expertise of the former with commercial disinterest of the latter, Supersempfft served as the multidisciplinary moniker for a trio of childhood friends whose separate skills combined perfectly for their high-concept high jinks. The prodigious musical talent of Dieter Kolb, augmented and elevated by Franz Knüttel’s electronic innovation, provided the ideal medium for Franz Aumüller’s wacky world building, which made up the lyrical thrust and visual flair of the project. Roboterwerke, both the name of this 1979 LP and the revolutionary drum machine created by Knüttel, tells the story of a mellow tuba-toting frog (apparently an avatar of Kolb), who is technologically transformed by a mad scientist (a Professor Knüttels, as it happens) into a star surfing superhero.

Jimi Tenor – Sähkömies [Reissue/1994] CD/LP (Bureau B)
With Sähkömies, Jimi Tenor released his legendary solo debut in 1994 on Puu, a spin-off of the Finnish label Sähkö Recordings founded by Tommi Grönlund and Mika Vainio in 1993. Recorded in Tenor’s former home in New York, the album offers a previously unheard mixture of drum machine driven, electronic sounds and Sun Ra-inspired jazz. Written, recorded and produced entirely by Tenor in his apartment, the pieces have lost none of their spontaneous, roughcast charm to this day. The record combines lo-fi electronics with Jimi Tenor’s typical smoky saxophone playing, offering a fascinating listening experience that documents an artist who is full of curiosity and the joy of experimentation.

This limited-edition EP features five tracks from one of U2’s two legendary open-air performances at the RDS Arena, Dublin in August 1993 – the hometown stop on their worldwide industry-defining ZOO TV Tour. While much sought-after bootlegged copies of the RDS show audio have been in circulation for years, this marks the first official release, making it a highly covetable collectible for fans and collectors alike. [A translucent yellow color vinyl pressing is available.]
Uniform – American Standard CD/LP (Sacred Bones)
American Standard is surely Uniform’s most thematically accomplished and musically self-assured album to date. Sections spiral and explode. Motifs drift off into obscurity before reasserting themselves with new power. Genres collide and burst open, forming something idiosyncratic and new. There’s a grandeur, due in part to the addition of Interpol bassist Brad Truax alongside the percussive push and pull of returning drummer Michael Sharp and longtime touring drummer Michael Bloom, marking his Uniform recorded debut here. However, this magnificence is most clearly attributable to the scale and power of guitarist and founder Ben Greenberg’s arrangements, matching ever elegantly to the intense lyrical subject matter. Without a shred of doubt, American Standard is a work of art, agonizing in its honesty and relentless in its pursuit of sonic transcendence. It is hideous. It is beautiful. It is necessary. [Multiple vinyl colorways are available.]
George Winston – Eastern Montana CD (Valley Entertainment)
Eastern Montana, the first in a series of posthumous releases from acclaimed solo pianist George Winston, was inspired by the surroundings of his childhood growing up in Miles City and Billings during the 1950s. Wintersun – Time II CD/LP (Nuclear Blast)
Time II includes six epic tracks with individual stories. Yet the subjects are all linked, and this red line gives it a conceptual feeling. Entering Wintersun’s universe, we are brought into the right mood with the eastern-influenced, atmospheric intro “Fields Of Snow”. The first real Wintersun track is the metallic brilliance of “The Way Of The Fire”, with fire representing the energy of stars as a source of life, which is also connected to time. In “One With The Shadows” we experience the magic of an opulence of vocal harmonies, while orchestral arrangements loom up as ornamental move. [A white color vinyl pressing is available.]
Wunderhorse – Midas CD/LP/Cassette (Communion)
In 10 songs and 40 minutes, Wunderhorse captures the raw power and energy that has set them apart as one of the most formidable live acts of recent years. With rugged hooks, unfiltered noise, and fierce melodic sensitivity, Midas rips up the script of traditional second albums and establishes the band as an endlessly addictive and rousing generational talent.
Yannis & The Yaw – Lagos Paris London CD/LP (Transgressive)
In 2016, Foals singer Yannis Philippakis was offered the opportunity of a lifetime: a two-day session with the great drummer Tony Allen. The pair quickly established an intuitive telepathy, and the music germinated from jams and loops, and was complemented by a unique atmosphere of two cultures and creatives colliding. Joined by Tony’s regular collaborators Vincent Taeger (percussion, marimba), Vincent Taurelle (keys) and Ludovic Bruni (bass, guitar) that first meeting resulted in a handful of near complete songs, which were further developed during a couple subsequent sessions. But between scheduling issues and Covid restrictions, the recordings were not completed before Tony passed away in April 2020. Yannis felt a deep duty to complete the project, not only as a bittersweet way to honor and celebrate his old friend, but also because Tony had been so eager to share these songs with the world. The result is this five-track EP, Lagos Paris London, under the Yannis & the Yaw umbrella. [An indie store exclusive red color vinyl pressing is available.]

Ach Buddha Beat System – Heart Sutra LP (Cobrarose)
Six original sutras from the definitive double CD edition released in 2004, with impeccable mastering by Dave Cooley lending presence and liveliness to the beats. Ahn Chi-haeng is a living legend of Korea’s old-school gayo scene. Cutting his teeth on the 8th US Army entertainment circuit in the 1960s, he went on to lead the popular soft rock band Young Sound in the 1970s. He then established his own production company Anta Production, where he reigned as a hitmaker with the Midas touch until the early 1990s. The series of Buddhist sutras he released at the age of 60 were playfully experimental, affirming his identity as a devout Buddhist while also channeling his professional knack for creativity. In contrast to conventional sutra recordings, Ahn opted to create something that could be enjoyed as well, adding Hip-Hop beats and guitar parts. With the help of the chorus unit ‘The Siddharettes’, Ahn recorded four such records in 2004 alone. Originally intended for a small Buddhist audience, eventually came to be rediscovered a decade later by younger listeners who shared the recordings through social networks. [A pink color vinyl pressing is available.]
American Analog Set – The Golden Band [Reissue/1999] LP (Numero)

Arial M – The Peel Sessions LP (Drag City)
Coke bottle green colorway. Unearthed from the neolithic tar that eventually swathes all history, Aerial M’s early- ‘98 Peel Session is once again among us. Compared to the studio takes, played strictly and singly by Aerial/Papa mastermind David Pajo, these versions swing from the necks of road-burned players, breathing more bestially than their canonical cousins, glinting ‘pon the dark metallic roots that fed all of Pajo’s best guitar lines, winding thru time immemorial.
Louis Armstrong – Louis Armstrong And The Dukes Of Dixieland [Reissue/1957] LP (LMLR)

Boyscott – Goose Bumps [Reissue/2015] LP (Top Shelf)
Green/blonde swirl colorway. On Goose Bumps, Connecticut’s Boyscott present ten upbeat tracks that forge together elements of surf rock and bedroom pop. Weaving these supple sounds of yore into the techniques of today, Boyscott’s distinct bedroom-recorded bops betray the limitations of their modest studio situation with a sonic depth not commonly associated with lo-fi projects.
Braille – Triple Transit LP (Hotflush)
Full of bounce and experimentation in equal measure, Triple Transit, Braille’s new album for Hotflush is about leaving his Sepalcure project (with Machinedrum) in the rear mirror, moving back to New York and using its energy to fuel new moves, confronting our hyper layered world and overcoming personal difficulties by being creative. Focused squarely on utilizing modular synthesis in sprawling studio sessions, the album covers a wide stylistic range and draws on the artist’s formidable battery of experience to craft a body of work that packs real emotional punch as well as a dancefloor sensibility.

A mix of crucial boom bap ranging from smooth and soulful to gritty and hard-hitting, Textures is a tapestry of sound composed of fully realized tracks, unfinished ideas, and rough sketches.
Carlile – Human Human LP (Sooper)
Transparent blood orange colorway. Carlile is the middle name and performance alias of Emily Nichols, a longtime figure in Chicago’s thriving underground music ecosystem. Over the past decade, she’s issued a streak of glossy synthpop EPs while performing at storied venues and opening for big name indie artists. In that time, she meticulously laid the groundwork for her debut LP Human Human, an unselfconsciously playful and thrilling work of synth-pop recalling the warmth of Robyn and the luster of MUNA in its bold, sweeping arcs. This is an album that savors the pleasure of splashing a full rainbow of feeling against the wall.

With this long-awaited return, Connors and Grubbs take turns trading off on piano and guitar, with Grubbs at the keyboard for the two gently expansive pieces on the first side and Connors taking over the instrument for three gorgeous miniatures on the flip, including an album-closing and perfectly heart-stopping version of Connors’s and Suzanne Langille’s “Child.”

The Faint – Doom Abuse [Reissue/2014] LP (Saddle Creek)
New colorways. The Faint has always been perceived as a series of paradoxes: Nebraskans trafficking in electro-pop anthems; a five-person outfit who insist on songwriting democracy; punk rockers laying down their guitars for a decidedly untypical kind of punk rock.

The saxophonist’s superlative 1967 quartet recording Sweet Rain can be overlooked but Getz afficionados recognize its quality. Standing in the shadow of the unprecedented mainstream success of Getz’s bossa period that came before, the Creed Taylor produced Sweet Rain is as perfect a straight-ahead date as the leader ever made, with a remarkable young band including pianist Chick Corea, bassist Ron Carter, and drummer Grady Tate providing crackling energy that clearly inspired Getz to new heights of expression.

Great Dying – A Constant Goodbye LP (Well Kept Secret)
The music of Will Griffith’s The Great Dying is a mix he likes to call dark country. He grew up in Cleveland, Mississippi, where D.I.Y. punk house shows hooked him, and his early bands played The Farmhouse and legendary delta juke joint Po’ Monkey’s. Songs from The Great Dying’s new album, A Constant Goodbye, were born from playing hundreds of shows supporting Bloody Noses & Roses (Dial Back Sound 2018), and it continues where the debut left off. The ballads are still sweet and menaced, the rockers are still hair-raisers, but the new record pushes in new directions, infusing sounds of classic country with faint traces of The Replacements and what was once called “alternative rock.”
Heaven And Earth – I Can’t Seem To Forget You [Reissue/1976] LP (P-Vine)
Heaven & Earth was a soul vocal group based in Chicago in the mid-1970s, and throughout their career, they left behind four high-quality albums. Among them, this first album released by Clarence Johnson’s G.E.C. Label could be considered their most overflowing work of the charm of their sweet vocals. This piece, where you can thoroughly enjoy Dwight Dukes’ consistently sweet falsetto, has never been reissued on record since its release in 1976 until today.

Gold colorway. Forming the bridge between ska and reggae, Rock Steady is arguably the most influential of Jamaican music’s many sub-genres. Although it lasted only a couple of years, Rock Steady yielded several of the island’s most immortal rhythm tracks. It is also probably the most contested of reggae formats, the innovations behind its irresistible beat claimed by a range of practitioners.

The album expanded the band’s sound well beyond the lo-fi, mostly acoustic sound of their prior releases, using killer rock tunes and powerful production to create an absolute stunner of an album. This 30th anniversary, limited color edition on silver-metallic vinyl contains the 2011 remaster of the album, which was overseen by Sebadoh’s Lou Barlow and Jason Loewenstein.
Ty Segall – Love Rudiments LP/Cassette (Drag City)

Delving deep into the melodic and orchestral possibilities of a full array of percussion instruments, from the trap kit to timpani, vibraphone, xylophone, percussion and e-drums, Ty charts the waxing and waning of a love affair, to explore some of the most delicate space we know of – the private emotional location where only two can meet.
Conrad Schnitzler – Blau (50th Anniversary Edition) LP (Bureau B)
On the red album, Conrad Schnitzler laid down the direction his musical artistry would take. The blue album (Blau) offered confirmation of his intent. Maybe the Rot and Blau tracks were recorded in the same session. The structure, sound, and timbre of both LPs are so similar as to suggest that this was the case. Far more important than this historical pedantry is the fact that Schnitzler included two brand new compositions on 1974’s Blau which followed on seamlessly from the previous album. Quite simply, he had found his way, a course from which he would not stray as long as he lived. The so-called Berlin School (Berliner Schule) — with Conrad Schnitzler one of their number — had developed its own style of minimalist music. Sun Ra & His Astro Infinity Arkestra – Strange Strings – Expanded Edition 2xLP (Cosmic Myth)
For this album, Sun Ra collected an arsenal of exotic string instruments and handed them out to his Arkestra on the precept that “strings could touch people in a special way.” That the Arkestrans didn’t know how to play or tune these instruments was not beside the point – it was the point. Ra framed it “a study in ignorance.” The result was primitive, yet sophisticated; brutal, yet highly sensitive.
