The Front Bottoms – You Are Who You Hang Out With CD/LP (Fueled By Ramen)
For New Jersey’s The Front Bottoms, working on new music has always been therapeutic, but on their new album You Are Who You Hang Out With, having complete and utter fun took top priority for the duo of Brian Sella and Mat Uychich. It’s this carefree and laid-back mindset that colored the sessions for the album. Armed with the duo’s signature anthemic melodies, take-no-prisoners lyrics and tight musical interplay, every spin of You Are Who You Hang Out With is a chance to peek behind the curtain at two friends having one hell of a time doing what they do best. [An indie store exclusive vinyl colorway is available.]

Might As Well serves as a preface into the world of these two songsmiths and the devotion to their craft.
Mammoth WVH – Mammoth II CD/LP (BMG)
With his solo band Mammoth WVH, Wolfgang Van Halen consistently challenges himself as a songwriter, vocalist, multi-instrumentalist, and producer. After a monumental breakthrough – with a Grammy nomination for his first-ever single, #1 debuts on multiple charts, television performances, and sold-out shows over a two-year span – it would’ve been easy to settle. Instead, he consciously tested himself to further develop his sound from every angle on his second full-length offering, Mammoth II. Coming out swinging, the hooks hit harder, the riffs roar louder, and the lyrics cut deeper as he delivers an urgent, undeniable, and unforgettable 10-song body of work. William Matheny – That Grand, Old Feeling CD/LP (Hickman Holler)
New album from West Virginia based singer-songwriter, William Matheny, set for release on Tyler Childers’ Hickman Holler Records. While That Grand, Old Feeling is a document of Matheny’s own journey as a seeker, he hopes that the album can inspire anyone else out there searching for meaning in their own lives, whether they’re searching at a truck stop or in an album of old photographs. “I feel like I’ve just been trying to recapture that youthful excitement my entire life, trying to regain that clarity and that feeling of purpose,” he says. “And it comes and goes. I mostly seem to be looking for it at gas stations and rest areas and at gigs. But I think a lot of people are probably looking for it in a lot of places like that, too. Pilgrim to pilgrim, I hope you find it.”

The result is a self-realized collection of songs that saw the band borrowing vintage gear, bringing in friends in the form of members from 311 vocalist/turntablist Doug “SA” Martinez and Softcult and incorporating tasteful pop sensibilities to craft a collection of songs that redefines the band’s sound while staying true to their guitar-driven roots. [An indie store exclusive eco-mix vinyl pressing is available. Standard vinyl edition due August 25.]
Various Artists – Playing For The Man At The Door: Field Recordings From The Collection Of Mack McCormick, 1958-1971 3xCD (Smithsonian Folkways)
In the 1950s and ‘60s, the blues was the dominant form of Black vernacular music throughout Texas and the surrounding areas. In segregated neighborhoods, community members gathered in saloons, dancehalls, and each other’s homes to hear their neighbors sing their stories of sorrow, heartbreak, jubilation, and triumph. Robert “Mack” McCormick, an academically untrained but fanatical devotee of the blues, stepped into this world and became one of its most devout advocates and documentarians. By photographing Black and Latino Texans and their neighborhoods, as well as recording and interviewing musicians-many of whom never stepped foot into a proper recording studio – McCormick endeared and eventually embedded himself into these communities. Playing For The Man At The Door: Field Recordings From The Collection Of Mack McCormick, 1958-1971 is the first compilation of music drawn from his legendary archive, which indelibly documents a pivotal moment in African American history. [Vinyl edition due September 8.]

An Autumn For Crippled Children has become a staple act in both black metal and shoegaze circles, delivering hauntingly evocative missives of introspective, yearning and sorrow alike. Atmosphere – Sad Clown Band Dub 2 [Reissue/2000] CD/2xLP (Rhymesayers)
Originally released in 2000, Sad Clown Bad Dub 2 was a rather stripped-down DIY release – a simple CD tucked behind an illustrated cover with handwritten tracklist and liner notes. The recordings were equally as rough, consisting of a dozen raw four-track demos that hadn’t been treated to any sort of mixing or mastering. Although Atmosphere initially produced only 500 copies of these CDs to sell on the road for extra cash, the buzz and the subsequent demand from fans eventually led the group to pressing more of the CDs, this time stamping the cover art with the phrase “Authorized Bootleg” as a sly nod to those who’d been ripping and sharing the files.

Elvin Brandhi / Lord Spikeheart – Drunken Love 2xCD/LP (Hakuna Kulala)
Since they connected in Kampala back in 2019, Elvin Brandhi and Lord Spikeheart have been recording restlessly, developing a shared musical language that compliments their individual expressions. Both innovative improvisors motivated by the extreme potential of performance, they manufacture a synergistic shriek on their debut set, fluxing between jagged DIY noise, chilly sacred ambience, ratcheting hard dance and quirky leftfield pop. And despite their backgrounds, neither Brandhi nor Spikeheart have approached anything quite so piercing and direct. It’s music that sits a few paces from the established timeline, doggedly avoiding contemporary trends and screaming hoarsely at passersby.
Cherise – Calling CD/LP (Cheirse Adams-Burnet)
Soul sensation Cherise is a soul girl at heart with a bold Brit attitude, and she’s ready to make her mark with her debut album Calling. [A limited-edition red color vinyl pressing is available.]

Dymna Lotva – The Land Under The Black Wings: Blood [Reissue/2016] CD/2xCD/2xLP (Prophecy)
Dymna Lotva has many reasons to carry the torch of rebellion. The duo had to flee their native Belarus due to political persecution and attempts by the Lukashenka dictatorship to censure and suppress their art. On their third album, The Land Under The Black Wings: Blood (original, not transcribed tile: Зямля Пад Чорнымі Крыламі: Кроў), Dymna Lotva continue to sing songs filled with grief and pain. The Belarusians have beautifully and powerfully enhanced their very personal style. [The deluxe CD edition includes a 5-track bonus CD, extensive liner notes and enhanced artwork. A limited-edition red & white marble color vinyl pressing is available.]

Doom Singer marks another significant milestone in Farren’s career as it is the first time he collaborated with a producer, multi-instrumentalist Melina Duterte (Jay Som, Bachelor, Routine). Holy Wave – Five Of Cups CD/LP (Suicide Squeeze)
Five Of Cups opens with the title track, establishing the album’s auditory and thematic modus operandi from the get-go. The Dead C – The White House [Reissue/1995] 2xLP (Ba Da Bing!)
The Dead C – Tusk [Reissue/1997] 2xLP (Ba Da Bing!)
The Dead C’s trio of albums in the middle of their harsh ‘90s reality served for many as entry points to the band. Operation Of The Sonne, The White House and Tusk received wider distribution than the band had ever seen before, and this was the first rays of them being considered amongst the most important rock bands of the 20th century. This trio of vinyl reissues capture their intensity and presence in a way that may even blow out the candle of the original pressings. Newly remastered by Lasse Marhaug, and with bonus tracks, these 2023 reissues have been cut carefully and loud, with the sonic wars heard on these now-classic tracks more blaring than ever.

Dirty Heads – Swim Team [Reissue/2017] LP (Better Noise Music)
Dirty Heads – The Best Of Dirty Heads [Reissue/2021] 2xLP (Better Noise Music)
Music thrives on freedom. Without boundaries or blueprints, songs not only come to life, but last for a very long time to come. The Orange County, CA quintet traffic between alternative, hip-hop, reggae, and rock here with the same spirit and spark that’s powered them since the beginning.
Michael Dixon – You’re Everything b/w You’re All I Need 7” (Numero)
Former Mind & Matter bandmates James “Jimmy Jam” Harris and Michael Dixon teamed up for 1978’s gospel-boogie banger “You’re All I Need” b/w “You’re Everything” on the private Mad label. [A limited-edition purple colorway is available.]
Dropkick Murphys – The Meanest Of Times [Reissue/2007] LP (Spirit SMA)
Green colorway. Dropkick Murphys came out swinging with their sixth studio album The Meanest Of Times; a collection of tales about family, loyalty and remembering where you came from. Hamza El Din – Al Oud [Reissue/1965] LP (Real Gone Music)
Limited clear vinyl pressing. It’s fair to say that what Ravi Shankar did for the sitar, Hamza El Din did for the oud (the short-necked Arabian lute): bringing a little-known instrument to the attention of the West and popularizing it. Indeed, he ended up playing oud with everybody from the Grateful Dead to the Kronos Quartet to his one-time roommate Sandy Bull. But El Din’s gifts went beyond that of an oud virtuoso; he was also an accomplished singer and composer, and you will hear all those talents on full display on the seminal Al Oud, released on Vanguard in 1965 soon after his star-making appearance at the 1964 Newport Folk Festival that attracted the attention of Bob Dylan and Joan Baez.

Grateful Dead – Dicks Picks Volume One: Tampa, Florida 12/19/73 [Reissue/1993] 4xLP (Real Gone Music)
The road to Dick’s Picks Vol. 1 began in 1985, when Grateful Dead archivist Dick Latvala sat bassist Phil Lesh down and virtually forced him to listen to some tapes from older shows. It still took Dick eight years to get the band to agree to release the first volume of Dick’s Picks, and the second one didn’t come till two years later… but Dick’s persistence paid off with a series of live recordings that revolutionized the way bands approach archival material. Now, on the 30th anniversary of its release and the 50th anniversary of the show itself, Real Gone Music is proud to reissue Dick’s Picks Volume One: Tampa Florida 12/19/73, remastered for vinyl by Jeffrey Norman from the original analog tapes for the first time ever (the previous LP release was taken from digital files).
Gucci Mane – Mr. Davis [Reissue/2017] LP (Atlantic)
2017 release. Mr. Davis includes the hit singles, “Tone It Down” (featuring Chris Brown), “I Get The Bag” (featuring Migos), and the iconic song “Curve” (featuring The Weeknd). Produced by Metro Boomin, the mixtape received widespread critical attention, with Pitchfork declaring it to be “their most unhinged music in some time.”
Johnny Hammond – Gears [Reissue/1975] LP (Craft Recordings)
Johnny Hammond’s jazz-funk opus, Gears, garnered critical acclaim upon its release and was a Top 40 hit on Billboard’s Jazz chart. In the decades since, Gears has only grown in its cult status, being sampled by the likes of Erykah Badu and Kendrick Lamar.
Joe Harriott – Free Form [Reissue/1961] LP (Destination Moon)
Clear vinyl pressing. The West Indian-born alto saxophonist Joe Harriott was one of the most convincing boppers outside of the US, though by the end of the 1950s he was exploring freer musical pastures, and the quintet with which he undertook the exploration was an outgrowth of the hard bop band with which he’d made a name on the British scene. Often the group’s music, in which trumpet and flugelhorn player Shake Keane figured alongside Harriott in the front line, has been compared with that of the early Ornette Coleman quartets, but here it’s far more interactive, a fact borne out most obviously by the lack of soloists.
The Invisible Teardrops – Spell Caster LP (Arkam)
When you think of Muscle Shoals, Alabama, you get hit over the head with great soul music. This crew is from there, but this is not that kind of music. This is rock steady garage/punk under the soft glow of Halloween lights, the eerie Vox organ drawing you into the mystic world of The Invisible Teardrops… think of the Sir Douglas Quintet, Burning Spear, the Real Kids, soft vinyl crooners from forgotten doo-wop worlds stirred up in a rock and roll blender designed to make up the spider web fabric of this garage sound.
Wanda Jackson – The Capitol Years 1956–1963 LP (Destination Moon)
Clear vinyl pressing. Wanda Jackson is a true pioneer of American popular music. One of the first women in history to record country and western music, as well as rock ‘n’ roll, and a brief romantic liaison with Elvis. This collection reflects the greatness of her peak years at Capitol Records.
Alejandro Jodorowsky – Holy Mountain O.S.T 2xLP (Abkco)
Blue color vinyl pressing. The Holy Mountain score is every bit hallucinatory as the visual imagery in the film. Musical styles that range from deep, primordial chants, to sitar folk melodies, to
blaring orchestral riffs and romantic string arrangements provide the perfect aural accompaniment to the film. Featuring liner notes by New York Times contributor Eric Benson, exclusive quotes from Alejandro Jodorowsky himself and a copious number of production stills.

Lifelover – Sjukdom [Reissue/2011] LP (Prophecy)
Clear vinyl pressing. B’s legacy and the most extreme swansong of 2011 Lifelover’s fourth and last album Sjukdom (English: disease) is a dark and challenging record. Following their critical acclaim-afforded and cathartic Konkurs in 2008, these elusive and mysterious misanthropes venture down an even more daring path with Sjukdom where the extremes of the characteristically idiosyncratic Lifelover sound are pushed to their utmost limit: the bittersweet melodies become more beautiful whilst the pulsing, coal-black heaviness becomes uglier. After the tragic death of B in September 2011, this is Lifelover’s final studio album.
Luna – The Days Of Our Nights [Reissue/1999] LP (Real Gone Music)
Limited orange color vinyl pressing. Galaxie 500 co-founder Dean Wareham took his penchant for crafting sneakily hooky indie pop songs with gorgeously melodic, Television-esque guitar work into the ’90s with his band Luna. The group made four critically acclaimed albums for Elektra, but in 1999, the label dropped them on the eve of releasing The Days Of Our Nights, leaving them without American distribution (the album was eventually released on the short-lived Jericho imprint). As a result, The Days Of Our Nights has been hard to find over the years; in fact, this marks the first time it’s been available as a stand-alone vinyl release in the US.
Magnetic Ghost Orchestra – Magnetic Ghost Orchestra LP (Fun In The Church)
Released in April on CD – now available on vinyl. In addition to jazz (in general), 17-piece ensemble Magnetic Ghost Orchestra are also influenced by the of indie pop bands like The Notwist or the big, sample-based Bristol pop of the ‘90s all the way to the noisy, electrifying improv jazz of Berlin’s present: “The traditional sound of a big band gives the music a certain vintage character because it rubs up against contemporary elements.”

Toshiko Mariano – Toshiko Mariano Quartet [Reissue/1961] LP (Candid)
Toshiko Mariano Quartet is the 1961 album from fourteen-time Grammy-nominated pianist and composer Toshiko Akiyoshi – then known as Toshiko Mariano. Women have long been denied the credit they deserve in jazz. It must be noted that as a Japanese woman in jazz, Akiyoshi had to battle for acceptance on many fronts. Jazz has been a patriarchy community from the beginning, and even critical praise of her playing could not help but take note of her gender.
Bruno Mars – 24k Magic LP (Atlantic)
24K Magic is the third studio album by Bruno Mars, originally released in 2016.

Jackie Mittoo – Keyboard King At Studio One [Reissue/2000] 2xLP+MP3 (Soul Jazz)
This compilation features the work of Jackie Mittoo at Studio One. It features music recorded as a solo artist (as opposed to the numerous singers that he accompanied). Most of these are taken from his recordings in the mid- ‘60s where he was recording on an almost daily basis at Studio One’s Brentford Road studios, developing the funky reggae sound that was his trademark. Jackie Mittoo is as much an icon of reggae as he is to fans of funk music. He is without doubt the funkiest keyboard player ever to come out of Jamaica.
Lee Morgan – Infinity [Reissue/1981] LP (Blue Note)
Lee Morgan’s Infinity, which was recorded in 1965 but not released until 1981, finds the great trumpeter leading a robust quintet featuring saxophonist Jackie McLean, pianist Larry Willis, bassist Reggie Workman and drummer Billy Higgins to the far reaches of the hard bop tradition and beyond. Part of Blue Note’s Tone Poet Series.
Navy Blue – Ways Of Knowing LP (Def Jam)
Over the course of 13 tracks, Ways Of Knowing traverses a sonic and emotional spectrum, exploring everything from moments of insecurity to infatuation and introspection. The album showcases Navy Blue’s adroit lyricism and eloquent songcraft above immersive, throwback soulful beatcraft.

Johanna Orellana – Las Camelias, Tres Esquinas LP (Smalltown Supersound)
“Flautist Johanna Orellana teams up with Carmen Villain for a collection of horizontal, pastoral field recordings and close mic’ed flute sounds that zero in on the instrument’s unstable resonance and levitational magic. There’s no cringe virtuoso business or fourth world firewalking here – just sonic purity, sublime minimalism and the precise capture of time, place, and poetry. Huge recommendation if yr into Debit, Joanna Brouk, Bendik Giske, Mary Jane Leach.” – Boomkat
Panda Bear – Tomboy [Reissue/2011] LP+MP3 (Domino)
Recorded at his studio in Lisbon, Tomboy sees Animal Collective member Panda Bear aka Noah Lennox stepping away from the sample-based parameters of his previous record, Person Pitch, and incorporating more guitar and synthesizer. The record, massive in its span of emotion, genre, and sound, is the welcome return of one of the most prolific and consistent audio pioneers in recent memory.
Duke Pearson – The Right Touch [Reissue/1967] LP (Blue Note)
Duke Pearson’s 1967 album The Right Touch is perhaps the finest of his career and a showcase for the breadth of his talents as a pianist, composer, and arranger. Part of Blue Note’s Tone Poet Series.

[A limited-edition yellow colorway is available.]
Max Roach – Deeds, Not Words [Reissue/1958] LP (Destination Moon)
A pioneer of bebop, Max Roach went on to work on many other styles of music and is generally considered alongside the most important drummers in history having worked with such musicians as Coleman Hawkins, Dizzy Gillespie, Miles Davis, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Stan Getz and more. A seminal set, stretching out towards the directions Max would explore fully on the Candid, Impulse, and Fantasy labels in the ‘60s. Group members include Booker Little on trumpet, George Coleman on tenor, Ray Draper on tuba, and Art Davis on bass – and the lack of a piano makes for a very exciting sound.

This collection is not meant as a definitive history but rather as a supplement to be used alongside the previous two archival releases. It is simultaneously an archival release marking Carl Stone’s evergreen 70th birthday and a document of archival art. In the spirit of disorienting repetition and layering, call it an archive of archiving.

Various Artists – Sonhos Secretos LP (Org Music)
From the rare and obscure to the unknown, producer Tee Cardaci mines eleven genre-spanning gems from the waning days of Brazil’s military dictatorship, recorded by a new emerging class of artists operating outside of the major label system. Sonhos Secretos, or ‘Secret Dreams’ in English, alludes to the quiet aspirations of those that made these independent and privately released 7”s as well as to the fact that many of these records have long remained essentially a secret. It’s also, to some extent, a reference to a certain dream-like quality that permeates this collection. These songs contain elements of jazz, soul, folk, prog, baroque rock and shimmering pop (housed under the blanket term Música Popular Brasileira, or Brazilian Popular Music). [A limited-edition orange colorway is available.]
