Deep Purple – Whoosh! CD+DVD/2xLP+DVD (earMUSIC)
Whoosh! sees Deep Purple for the third time joining forces with producer Bob Ezrin, who invited the band to Nashville to write and record new songs. Together they created the most versatile album in their collaboration. Deep Purple “stretched out in all directions” without any limitation, letting their creativity go. “Deep Purple is putting the Deep back in Purple” was the half-joking motto in the studio after the first songs made it clear that Ezrin and Purple were on their path to creating an album pushing the boundaries of time, while voicing their resentment about the current situation of the world and addressing all generations. [Limited indie store exclusive vinyl pressing available.]
Laura Marling – Songs For Our Daughter CD/LP (Chrysalis/Partisan)
Laura Marling’s exquisite seventh album Song For Our Daughter arrives almost without pre-amble or warning amidst uncharted global chaos, and yet instantly and tenderly offers a sense of purpose, clarity and calm. As a balm for the soul, this full-blooded new collection could be posited as Laura’s richest to date, but in truth it is another incredibly fine record by a British artist who rarely strays from delivering incredibly fine records. Taking much of the production reins herself, alongside long-time collaborators Ethan Johns and Dom Monks, Laura has layered up lush string arrangements and a broad sense of scale to these songs without losing any of the intimacy or reverence we’ve come to anticipate and almost take for granted from her throughout the past decade. [Limited indie store exclusive vinyl pressing available.]
The Stooges – Live At Goose Lake: August 8th, 1970 CD/2xLP (Third Man)
The apocryphal tale of the Stooges performance at the Goose Lake festival on August 8th, 1970 has been told countless times over the past five decades. Bassist Dave Alexander, due to nerves or overindulgence or whatever you choose to fill in the blank, absolutely spaces in front of 200,000 attendees. He does not play a single note on stage. He is summarily fired by Iggy Pop immediately following the gig. Here starts the beginning of the end of the Stooges. Found buried in the basement of a Michigan farmhouse amongst other tasty analog artifacts of the same era, the 1/4″ stereo two-track tape of the Stooges complete performance at Goose Lake is the Rosetta Stone for fans of this seminal band. Not only is this the last ever performance of the original godhead Stooges line-up, but it is the only known soundboard recording of said line-up. Playing the entirety of their canonical 1970 masterpiece Fun House, the sound, the performance, everything about this record is revelatory. [Limited indie store exclusive colored vinyl pressing available.]

Arctic Rain is, quite simply, a new melodic rock sensation from Sweden. Carcass – Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious [Reissue/1991] CD/LP (Earache)
The legendary death metal band’s classic third slab, Necroticism: Descanting The Insalubrious is an exhibition in expansive gore with mammoth production from Colin Richardson (Slipknot, Cannibal Corpse, Behemoth). The unnerving medical lyrics are still prevalent, but a much more precise musical approach is in evidence here as well thanks to the addition of guitarist Michael Amott (Arch Enemy) who makes his Caracass debut.

Dizzy – The Sun And Her Scorch CD/LP (Royal Mountain)
In bringing their sophomore album, The Sun and Her Scorch to life, Juno Award winning band Dizzy tapped into their increased sense of closeness and confidence, an element that Katie Munshaw attributes to their frequent touring over the past few years (including stints opening for artists like Death Cab for Cutie, Oh Wonder, Tokyo Police Club, and U.S. Girls). Describing the process as “totally challenging and completely rewarding,” the band took an entirely self-directed approach to every aspect of the album’s creation, introducing a more kinetic energy into their sound through their lavish use of live instrumentation.

On the newest Jaye Jayle album, Prisyn – Patterson takes his boldest leap into unknown territories, capturing immediate moments in his ever-shifting surroundings with the most basic tool at his disposal: the GarageBand app on an iPhone. Moonspell – The Butterfly Effect [Reissue/1999] CD/LP+7” (Napalm)
Moonspell’s fourth album The Butterfly Effect saw the band following more experimental paths after their impacting beginnings in gothic metal. Influenced by industrial elements of the ’90s, this full-length release from the Portuguese pioneers is awash in down-tuned guitars, an electronic veil of ghostly synths and the concept of the scientific chaos theory, proclaiming that even the smallest events in life can lead to tremendous consequences. This reissue includes two new remixes and artwork. [Limited green and yellow colored vinyl pressing with bonus 7” single also available.]

Kenny Roby – The Reservoir CD/2xLP (The Royal Potato Family)
These 16 tunes collectively summon the wealth of Roby’s experience, as a human being and as a musician. He revisits the specter of addiction with the fractured gothic gospel of “All Trains Lead to Cocaine” and recognizes that recovery is a constant process during the springy folk-pop charmer, “Just Because”. He questions the roots of faith and recognizes the goodness of the universe in the preternaturally graceful “Watchin’ Over Me” and sets his sights on contentment for the tender “Old Love”. He sings all these songs with the wisdom of lived experience, a gift and tool for you to use.
The Shaggs – Shaggs’ Own Thing [Reissue/1982] CD/LP (Light In The Attic)
When The Shaggs’ Philosophy Of The World came out in 1969, some people couldn’t or wouldn’t understand it. But many musicians, including Frank Zappa and Kurt Cobain, cited the Shaggs as a major influence. NRBQ’s Terry Adams and Keith Spring were such fans, and after reissuing Philosophy in 1980 on their own Red Rooster label, Adams began work on a collection of recordings the Wiggin sisters had made in the years following their debut. The result was Shaggs’ Own Thing – a beguiling follow-up that reveals a more developed and mature sound while still retaining all of their homespun uniqueness. Newly remastered with the bonus track “Love At First Sight”.

Found buried in the basement of a Michigan farmhouse amongst other tasty analog artifacts of the same era, the 1/4″ stereo two-track tape of the Stooges complete performance at Goose Lake is the Rosetta Stone for fans of this seminal band. Over the course of three uniquely enchanting, critically lauded albums and an EP, the music he makes has proved both transportive and visual, each new effort inviting listeners into immersive, self-contained universes. Each Washed Out release has been rooted in a form of escapism, but coupled with a new layer of emotional intensity, Purple Noon takes the project’s music to dazzling new heights. The coastlines of the Mediterranean inspire Purple Noon, and Greene pays tribute to the region’s distinct island culture – with all of its rugged elegance and old-world charm – and uses it as a backdrop to tell the album’s stories of passion, love, and loss (its title comes from the 1960 film directed by Rene Clement, which is based on the novel The Talented Mister Ripley by Patricia Highsmith).

Year Of The Knife – Internal Incarceration CD/LP (Pure Noise)
The Delaware-based band excels at crafting unrelentingly heavy, metal-influenced hardcore with deeply human and socially conscious lyrics, and Internal Incarceration takes these strengths to new heights. Recorded by Kurt Ballou (Converge, Code Orange, Nails), the album sounds as raw and visceral as the subjects of its songs, which often find vocalist Tyler Mullen working through the challenges of loss, grief, and addiction with compassion to match the furor of the music.

Maxine Gordon, Scott’s close friend, and executive producer on the original record, expresses that they often had intimate discussions about how Scott was being told what to play, what to wear, how to look and how to speak in public for many years. Having had enough of these restrictions, she created this record to please no one but herself.
