zzzahara’s music wades into the deep waters of love, lust, and self-discovery in a part of the world where artifice and authenticity co-exist. Emerging from the heart of LA’s alternative music scene, their sound is raw in feeling and rebellious by nature. Their 2022 debut album, Liminal Spaces, chronicles a coming-of-age in Highland Park, following painful childhood memories through to late-night, live-fast coping mechanisms, and the changes the neighborhood has endured over the same period of time. Their 2023 follow-up, Tender, marked a period of slowing down, looking inward, and embracing a softer side of being. Spiral Your Way Out sees zzzahara evolve again. Emotionally, its foundations are built on scorched earth. [An indies tore exclusive yellow w/ black splatter color vinyl pressing is available.]
This Week’s Vinyl Exclusives:
Boat Show – Nautical By Nature LP (Chain Smoking)
Marble blue/black colorway. Boat Show is a six-piece rock band with a punk ethos and a folk influence that spans the globe. Boat Show came from the ashes of a dozen other bands and rose up like a drunken, angry Phoenix spewing out hits to those lucky enough to live close enough to The Brass Rail in Fort Wayne, IN. This album spans almost every genre of folk and just about every song is done in a different style. Tom McSod’s (ex Staggerers) songwriting excels here and his carnivalesque bark is accompanied perfectly by some of the best musicians Fort Wayne has to offer.

Childish Gambino – Atavista 2xLP (RCA)
For years, Childish Gambino’s Atavista hid in plain sight. When he released an unfinished version of the record on March 15, 2020, it spent just 12 hours on his website before he pulled it down. Reappearing on streaming a week later as 3.15.20, the project brought up almost as many questions as sparkling neo-soul anthems, which still sounded slicker than the average as raw cuts titled after timestamps.
The Dad Horse Experience – Too Close To Heaven [Reissue/2008] 2xLP (Chain Smoking)
Blue and brown colorway. “Primitive, crazed but surprisingly powerful spiritual blues. Dad Horse Ottn is the slightly touched, more primitive country cousin of David Eugene Edwards. He plays (using the word in its broadest sense) banjo and kazoo and sings twisted gothic country with something of a religious bent. But, and it’s an important but, he has a sense of humor.” – Americana-UK

Marina Herlop – Nekkuja LP (Pan)
Nekkuja is a place for Herlop’s warmest, sweetest sentiments to rise to the surface and crack through the topsoil. She describes the record as a way for her to seek and affirm inner light, and it’s undoubtedly her brightest, poppiest statement to date. The forward-thinking, experimental touches that nourished Pripyat are still present, but blessed with a level of positivity that’s rare to find in a scene so entranced by darkness and melancholy.

Nervous Burger started as a writing project for Indiana based musician Mike Wilson. He challenged himself to write 30 songs in 30 days, just to see if he could stick to it. “A haunting post-WWI concept album that explores themes of betrayal, heritage and identity, and a sound that sees Opeth both return to their metal roots, while simultaneously reaching new territory. For some, The Last Will And Testament may be a divisive record. In one aspect, it sees the band pay homage to their grittier roots after an extensive hiatus, yet in another, it is one that pushes the envelope beyond what is expected – even by Opeth’s standards.” – Guitar.com

Various Artists – Call Me Old Fashioned LP (Numero)
Struck for circulation after 63 years in hock within the Lou-Mood Pictures vault, this previously unissued soundtrack traffics in the high-tone timbre and highball-sipping swoon of pop’s post-war years. Muddling together sugar-lipped divas, barrel-aged big bands, and “zoo be zoo be zoo” zest, with a Latin jazz Luxardo for garnish, Call Me Old Fashioned is a 40-minute stereo-sonic adventure for the 7& 7 spy-fi fanatic. The War on Drugs, “one of the premier live bands of their generation” (Pitchfork), announce Live Drugs Again. Recorded on tour between February 2022 through December 2023 in America, UK, Europe and Australia, Live Drugs Again follows 2020’s Live Drugs and represents The War on Drugs at their ragged, righteous best.
Weeks Island – Droste LP (DFA)
The Weeks Island project began in 2018 when, itching for something during a break from his gig playing guitar for the Grammy-winning Cajun group Lost Bayou Ramblers, Jonny Campos ventured to his bandmate’s house and recorded a series of deep, amoebic, ambient pedal steel passages across two afternoons. It wasn’t all heavy, though: he paid that bandmate, Kirkland Middleton, in Cane’s chicken strips. The tracks on Droste are named for bodies of water that no longer exist, their names wiped from maps thanks to the disintegrating shorelines of Southern Louisiana. That feeling of impermanence hangs over this record – the tracks don’t so much begin and end as slip in and out of your consciousness. It can be a serene passive listen or a deep one that marinates long after the runout.
