Louis Armstrong – Louis In London CD/LP (Verve)

Louis Armstrong made a greater impact on American popular music than any other single artist before or since. “What A Wonderful World” became his biggest commercial success, first in the UK and decades later in the rest of the world. Armstrong traveled to England to celebrate this unexpected hit and gave his last great performance, which found him looking back at his entire musical career. That performance, recorded at BBC studios in 1968, was miraculously captured in high fidelity audio and video, and we are proud to release this collection for the first time.

Cigarettes After Sex – X’s CD/LP/Cassette (Partisan)

Eric Clapton – To Save A Child CD+Blu-ray/2xLP (Surfdog/Eric Clapton)

Eric Clapton’s intimate concert filmed in London in front of a small audience in December 2023. Eric’s set included “Tears In Heaven,” “Layla,” “River Of Tears,” “Got To Get Better In A Little While,” and a very special version of George Harrison’s “Give Me Love (Give Me Peace On Earth)” featuring a special guest appearance from Dhani Harrison. Also featuring a special bonus track titled “Prayer Of A Child” – a brand-new studio recording. The proceeds will be donated in aid of the children in Gaza.

Clairo – Charm CD/LP/Cassette (Clairo)

American indie-pop luminary Clairo returns with third album, Charm, co-produced by Clairo and Leon Michels (of The Dap-Kings and El Michels Affair). Evoking balmy summer evenings and tête-à-têtes in plush conversation pits, Charm is a collection of warm, ‘70s-inspired grooves that move lithely between jazz, psychedelic folk and soul. Chris Cohen – Paint A Room CD/LP (Hardly Art)

Chris Cohen was always a quiet kid. In fact, this introversion was one reason he began playing music as a toddler-to communicate without speaking, to identify with others without the direct representation of words. It has worked, too, with Cohen’s terrific stint in the mighty Deerhoof and his own captivating art-rock act The Curtains, preceding production and session work for the likes of Weyes Blood, Kurt Vile, Le Ren, and Marina Allen. Somewhere along that long way, Cohen started writing lyrics. He found that, though it didn’t come naturally, the process offered a new sense of self-discovery and reckoning, a way to see himself and the world from unexpected angles. His three twilit albums of casually complicated pop during the last decade radiated these epiphanies: handling family strife, navigating advancing age, and understanding social woes. But Cohen has never had as much to sing so directly as he does on Paint A Room, his first album in five years. [A red color vinyl pressing is available.]

The Color Green – Fool’s Parade CD/LP (New West)

Green can represent many things. It can symbolize money, of course, but also weed. And envy. It implies newness, the rebirth of spring, but it can also evoke illness and infection. It’s an apt name for a band that is defined by its adaptability, by its knack for doing many different things all at once. On The Color Green’s second full-length – their first as a quartet – they ground their cosmic jams in earthy melodies, drawing from ’60s SoCal folk-rock, ’70s classic rock, ’80s underground rock, ’90s psychedelic dance-rock, and many other sources. Their songs are vehicles for self-exploration, not just a means of putting their feelings into lyrics and notes but molding them, night after night, into different shapes to get different insights. Jake Xerxes Fussel – When I’m Called CD/LP (Fat Possum)

Over the last decade, North Carolina’s Jake Xerxes Fussell has established himself as a devoted listener and contemplative interpreter of a vast array of lovingly sourced folk songs. Phish – Evolve CD/LP (Jemp)

Recorded in the fall of 2023 at the band’s studio The Barn, Evolve (the 16th studio album by Phish) was produced by Vance Powell and Bryce Goggin with the 12 songs emerging from the band’s dynamic live performances. Some, like fan favorite “A Wave Of Hope,” have become springboards for Phish’s most soaring improvisation. The songcraft and production are confident and taut, with Phish’s distinct musical language on vivid display; still pushing boundaries, still very much continuing to evolve. Billy Strings – Live Vol. 1 CD/LP (Reprise)

Billy Strings, born William Apostol on October 3, 1992, in Lansing, Michigan, is an acclaimed American guitarist and bluegrass musician. He developed a deep love for bluegrass music at an early age, heavily influenced by his stepfather, Terry Barber, who introduced him to the genre. Billy’s virtuosic guitar playing and innovative approach to traditional bluegrass have garnered widespread recognition and acclaim. Strings released his debut album, Turmoil & Tinfoil, in 2017, showcasing his extraordinary talent and blending of bluegrass with other musical influences such as rock and psychedelia. His follow-up album, Home, released in 2019, won the Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album, further cementing his reputation as one of the leading figures in contemporary bluegrass music. Travis – L.A. Times CD/LP (BMG)

Glasgow’s multiple BRIT and Ivor Novello-winning songwriting giants Travis return with 2024’s L.A. Times, their tenth studio album. An incredible achievement that arrives 25 years since the band released their breakthrough #1 album The Man Who, L.A. Times marks the beginning of a bold new era for the band. “L.A. Times is our most personal album since The Man Who,” says Fran Healy. “There was a lot of big stuff to write about back then, the tectonic plates had shifted in my life. I was 22 when I was writing those songs. They were my therapy. Over 20 years later and the plates have shifted again. Donovan Woods – Things Were Never Good If They’re Not Good Now CD/LP (End Times Music)

“It took me a while to make this record – my whole adult life essentially. Early last year, I was struggling to find things to sing about, or reasons to sing at all. A series of failures led me to a point where I entered an addiction counseling program and committed myself to getting to the bottom of myself, right down to the stuff I kept from everyone. It’s been a process. Since then, I’ve held myself to a high standard of total honesty always. I shaved my head. I changed my mind about a lot of things. Thom Yorke – Confidenza: Music For The Film By Daniele Luchetti CD/LP (XL)

Thom Yorke composed the original score for Daniele Luchetti’s film Confidenza, an adaptation of the Italian drama based on Domenico Starnone’s novel of the same name, which premiered at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam and will be out in Italian theaters in April 2024. Confidenza follows Yorke’s previous full-length score work for a narrative film, Luca Guadagnino’s 2018’s Suspiria remake. In 2019 Yorke contributed music to Edward Norton’s Motherless Brooklyn and in 2022 he wrote two original tracks for the series finale of Peaky Blinders. As of late Yorke has been touring with The Smile, a project with Sons of Kemet Tom Skinner and fellow Radiohead member Jonny Greenwood. New album from the country rock singer/songwriter. Quit!! was recorded with Big Loud partner and producer Joey Moi (who’s worked with the likes of Morgan Wallen, Florida Georgia Line, and Nickelback), and finds Hardy diving further into his rock-influenced sound. Includes musical assistance from Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith and Limp Bizkit’s Fred Durst.

John Lee Hooker – The Best Of Friends CD/LP (BMG)

The premise behind this compilation is somewhat unusual: classic tracks, yes, but classic tracks recorded by John Lee Hooker… and friends. Charles Brown, Eric Clapton, Ry Cooder, Los Lobos, and Bonnie Raitt are only some of the performers who appear here, and the tracks, selected from recordings made by the prolific guitarist since 1988, show that Hooker hasn’t lost his touch.

In 2013, a New Zealand teenager named Daniel Johann Lines quietly uploaded his debut album, Melanchole, to Bandcamp under the moniker Salvia Palth. Despite modest intentions, the record resonated profoundly with millions on platforms like Tumblr and YouTube, maintaining momentum through the TikTok and streaming era. Thom Yorke – Confidenza: Music For The Film By Daniele Luchetti CD/LP (XL)

Thom Yorke composed the original score for Daniele Luchetti’s film Confidenza, an adaptation of the Italian drama based on Domenico Starnone’s novel of the same name, which premiered at the International Film Festival in Rotterdam and will be out in Italian theaters in April 2024. Confidenza follows Yorke’s previous full-length score work for a narrative film, Luca Guadagnino’s 2018’s Suspiria remake. Having lovingly reissued the first four albums by our all-time favorite all-female punk band, we now turn our attention to The Donnas’ major label debut for the Atlantic label, where they went after recording a quartet of classics for Lookout! 2002’s Spend The Night was by far the band’s most popular album, hitting 62 on the Billboard charts, but it wasn’t just the major label distribution mojo that upped the sales. This record doesn’t have a dud on it and boasts such Donnas devastators as “Who Invited You,” “Take It Off,” “You Wanna Get Me High,” and “Pass It Around.”

Niandra LaDes And Usually Just A T-Shirt is the first solo record by John Frusciante.

Between 1990 and 1992 the guitarist made a series of 4-track recordings, which at the time were not intended for commercial release. After leaving the band Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1992, Frusciante was encouraged by friends to release the material that he wrote in his spare time during the Blood Sugar Sex Magik sessions. Originally released on Rick Rubin’s American Recordings label in 1994, Niandra LaDes is a mystifying work of tortured beauty.

Frusciante plays various acoustic and electric guitars, experimenting with layers of vocals, piano and reverse tape effects. Channeling the ghosts of Syd Barrett and Skip Spence, his lyrics are at once utterly personal and willfully opaque.

Marvin Gaye / Mary Wells – Together [Reissue/1964] LP (Motown)

The first and only studio album recorded by the duo team of Motown artists Marvin Gaye and Mary Wells, Together was released on April 15, 1964. It became the first charted album credited to Gaye, peaking at #42 on the Billboard Pop Albums chart and yielded two Top 20 singles, “Once Upon a Time,” and “What’s the Matter with You Baby.”

Dizzy Gillespie – The Ebullient Mr. Gillespie [Reissue/1959] LP (Verve)

The band Gillespie assembled for this date – Junior Mance, Les Spann, Sam Jones, & Lex Humphries – was for the most part a working band on the club & concert circuit, offering a mixture of Gillespie’s entertaining songs, established repertoire, & some Latin & African-influenced pieces. With them, Dizzy found a middle ground in his music that gave his legacy room to breathe, but with much more rhythmic variety.

Dexter Gordon – North Sea Jazz Concert Series 1979 LP (North Sea Jazz)

White colorway. Dexter Gordon (1923 – 1990) was a giant in every respect. Both his height and his playing exuded authority. He had the power to draw conclusions amid many musical impressions and, carefree of other people’s opinions, said/played things as they were. He was one of the first tenor saxophonists to play modern jazz after the big band style, making him a source of inspiration for many. On July 15, 1979, he joined North Sea Jazz with his accompanying trio consisting of pianist Kirk Lightsey, bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Eddie Gladden.

Listening – Listening [Reissue/1968] LP (Real Gone Music)

While most of the bands (Orpheus, Ultimate Spinach, Beacon Street Union) associated with producer Alan Lorber’s “Bosstown Sound” signed with MGM Records, Listening recorded their only album in 1968 with Vanguard. And it’s a highly prized one, at that, with original copies selling for triple figures. One reason for that is, unlike many of their more poppy Boston-based peers, Listening boasted an original, swirling, hard-edged sound, full of jazzy and even proggy passages, and keyboardist/singer/songwriter Michael Tschudin’s lyrics were openly countercultural. That’s future (post-Lou Reed) Velvet Underground member Walter Powers on bass, and blues wunderkind Peter Malick on guitar.

Mahti – Konsertti I 2xLP (VHF)

Third album from Finnish group Mahti, a collaboration between three members of stalwart avant-rock legends Circle and Hannu Saha. Saha plays the Kantele, a traditional Finnish acoustic instrument which can have five, ten, fifteen, or thirty-six strings, and which is plucked like a zither or harp, producing a delicate string sound. Doesn’t really sound like anything else, but recommended to fans of AR & Machines, Ash Ra Temple, Richter Band, Durutti Column, etc.

Thru The Years is a compilation album of music by John Mayall released in October 1971 by Decca Records in the UK and London Records in the US The album was the second compilation to be issued by Decca/London with Mayall’s blessing, although his contract with them had ceased.

Charles Mingus – The Jazz Experiments Of Charlie Mingus [Reissue/2013] LP (BMG)

Charles Mingus was a virtuoso bass player, accomplished pianist, band leader and composer. Born on a military base in Nogales, Arizona in 1922 and raised in Watts, California, his earliest musical influences came from the church- choir and group singing- and from “hearing Duke Ellington over the radio when [he] was eight years old.” His early professional experience, in the 40’s, found him touring with bands like Louis Armstrong, Kid Ory and Lionel Hampton. Mingus’ career has spanned three-decades and he collaborated with other jazz legends such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Herbie Hancock. Mingus’ compositions retain the hot and soulful feel of hard bop, drawing heavily from black gospel music and blues, while sometimes containing elements of Third Stream, free jazz, and classical music.

Tony Rice – Native American [Reissue/1988] LP (Real Gone Music)

The late, great guitarist Tony Rice grew up in a bluegrass family and learned to play at the feet of Kentucky Colonel and Byrd Clarence White. In the mid-’70s, he joined J.D. Crowe’s seminal newgrass group The New South, thus launching one of the most celebrated careers in modern bluegrass, folk, and acoustic string band music. The band has gone back to it’s basics with a lineup of its core member John Wiese and longtime collaborator Charlie Mumma (who you may know from Bloddy Phoenix or his contributions to Knelt Rote). Diaphanous is a mess of blast beats, noise walls, and ardent screaming. The music is both artistic and unstructured – is it high culture or lowbrow?

Dusty Springfield – Faithful LP (Real Gone Music)

In 1971, Atlantic Records released a pair of Dusty Springfield singles produced by the legendary songwriter/producer Jeff Barry (one-time songwriting and romantic partner of Ellie Greenwich, and author of too many hits to name): “Haunted” b/w “Nothing Is Forever” and “I Believe In You” b/w “Someone Who Cares.” A restless Dusty, freshly relocating to America from her native England, then departed the label and left an additional nine songs recorded with Barry in the can, where they stayed until Rhino issued one track, “Faithful” (in mono), as a bonus track on the 1990s CD release of Dusty’s 1970 Atlantic

album A Brand New Me. The other tracks didn’t surface until a subsequent deluxe reissue of Dusty’s landmark 1969 album Dusty in Memphis included them as bonus cuts.

Sonny Stitt – Blows The Blues [Reissue/1970] LP (Verve)

Sonny Stitt led several excellent record dates in 1959, especially at the end of the year when he produced three LPs for Verve over a span of three sessions with pianist Lou Levy, bassist Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Mel Lewis. Playing alto sax throughout this album, Stitt hardly sounds like a Charlie Parker clone, something that unfortunately was a frequent claim by tin-eared critics throughout a fair portion of his career. The music includes several potent originals, especially “Hymnal Blues” and the slow, powerful “Morning After Blues.” Originally released in 1970.

The Supremes – I Hear A Symphony [Reissue/1966] LP (Motown)

Green colorway. I Hear A Symphony, the eighth studio album released by The Supremes in 1966 on Motown, was a successful attempt to further bridge the gap between traditional pop music and the Motown sound and soul. The album includes the title track, which was the group’s sixth #1 single, as well as the Top 10 hit, “My World Is Empty Without You.” The album peaked at #8 on the Billboard 200 and remained on the chart for 55 weeks.

Swim Deep – There’s A Big Star Outside LP (Submarine)

In some ways, Swim Deep’s fourth album – full of acoustic guitars and floral notes courtesy of a Mellotron keyboard (one of the finest musical exports from their native Birmingham) – has no business being as luscious and evolved as it is. But There’s A Big Star Outside could only have surfaced because of such testing years. It takes the youthful dreaming of their debut, and the excitable experimentalism of its follow-ups, and leads it to a more assured space, aided hugely by the input of producer Bill Ryder-Jones, who became a mentor throughout the journey.

Tamba 4 – Samba Blim [Reissue/1968] LP (Endless Happiness)

This is the second incredible album which the Brazilian bossa combo Tamba 4 did in the US for A&M Records, during the brief time when they were expanded to a quartet from the original Tamba Trio lineup. This album can be considered a masterpiece that combines their original style with American sophistication. The set is completely sublime. A wonderful mix of the group’s trademark harmony vocals and crackling bossa rhythms, with the warmly flowing CTI production style of the time — not funky like the CTI sound of the ’70s, but a bit more sophisticated than the style Creed Taylor had been using earlier at Verve. Tracks are short, breezy, and often very lively — bossa grooving warmed in the California sun.

Luke Temple & The Cascading Moms – Certain Limitations LP (Western Vinyl)

Lauded for his contributions to Here We Go Magic and Art Feynman, Luke Temple brings his signature off-kilter grooves and melodies to his new project’s debut album Certain Limitations. The trio’s sound takes influence from the likes of Dire Straits and The Velvet Underground, weaving together intricate guitar work, and a propulsive rhythm section, with a touch of jazz sensibility that recalls the ECM catalog. A product of serendipity, The Cascading Moms were formed when in need of a band for an upcoming show, Temple brought together Kosta Galanopolous, a collaborator from his Art Feynman project, and Stuart, a musician he already knew in LA.

Underoath – They’re Only Chasing Safety [Reissue/2004] LP (Many Hats Dist.)

Mint and white blend vinyl. They’re Only Chasing Safety is the fourth studio album by American melodic hardcore band Underoath. It was released on June 15, 2004, through Solid State Records. Following the release of their third studio album, The Changing Of Times (2002), half of the band’s members were replaced. After finalizing the line-up with vocalist Spencer Chamberlain, the band recorded They’re Only Chasing Safety with producer James Paul Wisner (Dashboard Confessional, Further Seems Forever, Paramore). In the heavy and punk music scene, the album is considered a watershed moment. The blend of heavy metal and hardcore influences with a strong pop/punk sensibility spawned a new branch of heavy music.

Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention – Whisy A Go Go 1968: Highlights 2xLP (Zappa)

On July 23, 1968, Frank Zappa & The Mothers Of Invention took over the Whisky a Go Go for an all-night affair. FZ recorded the entire evening with the possibility of an album project. Although bits and pieces were released by Zappa over the years, a full live album never happened, and the tapes sat in the Vault for 55 years.
