[An indie store exclusive purple color vinyl pressing is available.]
Chris Cohen – Paint A Room CD/LP (Hardly Art)
Chris Cohen was always a quiet kid. In fact, this introversion was one reason he began playing music as a toddler-to communicate without speaking, to identify with others without the direct representation of words. It has worked, too, with Cohen’s terrific stint in the mighty Deerhoof and his own captivating art-rock act The Curtains, preceding production and session work for the likes of Weyes Blood, Kurt Vile, Le Ren, and Marina Allen. Somewhere along that long way, Cohen started writing lyrics. He found that, though it didn’t come naturally, the process offered a new sense of self-discovery and reckoning, a way to see himself and the world from unexpected angles. His three twilit albums of casually complicated pop during the last decade radiated these epiphanies: handling family strife, navigating advancing age, and understanding social woes. But Cohen has never had as much to sing so directly as he does on Paint A Room, his first album in five years. [A red color vinyl pressing is available.]
The Color Green – Fool’s Parade CD/LP (New West)
Green can represent many things. It can symbolize money, of course, but also weed. And envy. It implies newness, the rebirth of spring, but it can also evoke illness and infection. It’s an apt name for a band that is defined by its adaptability, by its knack for doing many different things all at once. On The Color Green’s second full-length – their first as a quartet – they ground their cosmic jams in earthy melodies, drawing from ’60s SoCal folk-rock, ’70s classic rock, ’80s underground rock, ’90s psychedelic dance-rock, and many other sources. Their songs are vehicles for self-exploration, not just a means of putting their feelings into lyrics and notes but molding them, night after night, into different shapes to get different insights. [An indie store exclusive orange color vinyl pressing is available.]
Jake Xerxes Fussel – When I’m Called CD/LP (Fat Possum)

Times is our most personal album since The Man Who,” says Fran Healy. “There was a lot of big stuff to write about back then, the tectonic plates had shifted in my life. I was 22 when I was writing those songs. They were my therapy. Over 20 years later and the plates have shifted again. There’s a lot to talk about.” [A deluxe double-CD version featuring a stripped-back version of the album and a ‘freemantle’s green marble’ color vinyl pressing are available.]

Donovan Woods – Things Were Never Good If They’re Not Good Now CD/LP (End Times Music)
“It took me a while to make this record – my whole adult life essentially. Early last year, I was struggling to find things to sing about, or reasons to sing at all. A series of failures led me to a point where I entered an addiction counseling program and committed myself to getting to the bottom of myself, right down to the stuff I kept from everyone. It’s been a process. Since then, I’ve held myself to a high standard of total honesty always. I shaved my head. I changed my mind about a lot of things. It turns out the truth really does set you free.” [Multiple color vinyl pressings are available, including indie store exclusive neon green.]

Cassandra Jenkins – My Light, My Destroyer CD/LP (Dead Oceans)
Cassandra Jenkins is quite simply one of the best songwriter-storytellers currently making music. Hers is a specific and singular corner of the Great American Songwriters, artists like David Berman, Adrianne Lenker, Jeff Tweedy and Sufjan Stevens. They’re artists connected by a sense of immediacy, not just in the writing – which is precise, evocative, brutal at times, pitch-back funny right when you need it – but by their delivery, by the way they sing with an immersive, total belief that carries you through their songs. These are the artists and songs that sneak up and really live with us forever, and on My Light, My Destroyer, Jenkins joins their ranks. [A pink ‘clear wave’ color vinyl pressing is available.]

Ani DiFranco – Unprecidented Sh!t CD (Righteous Babe)
These days, every artist’s album needs to have a story. The music can’t speak for itself. But after 22 records, why can’t Ani DiFranco’s work speak for itself? Yes, her album is shaped by stories – ones about reproductive freedom, the double-edged sword of the pandemic, identity and ever-evolving belief systems that have shaped each of its 11 songs. It was paramount to the folk-feminist hero that listeners not be saddled with preconceived notions while diving into her 23rd album Unprecedented Sh!t. Lord Buffalo – Holus Bolus CD/LP (Blues Funeral)
New Lord Buffalo album Holus Bolus takes its name from an antiquated phrase meaning all at once. While the quartet wades into the same murky waters as dark emotive brethren David Eugene Edwards/Woven Hand, All Them Witches, Emma Ruth Rundle, Earth/Dylan Carlson, Chelsea Wolfe and Nick Cave, the creative interplay of Middle Eastern influences and Western folk Americana takes the record in its own enveloping, meditative direction.

Phish – Evolve CD/LP (Jemp)
Recorded in the fall of 2023 at the band’s studio The Barn, Evolve (the 16th studio album by Phish) was produced by Vance Powell and Bryce Goggin with the 12 songs emerging from the band’s dynamic live performances. Some, like fan favorite “A Wave Of Hope,” have become springboards for Phish’s most soaring improvisation. The songcraft and production are confident and taut, with Phish’s distinct musical language on vivid display; still pushing boundaries, still very much continuing to evolve. [Multiple vinyl colorways are available, including indie store exclusive ‘solar discus’ pressing.]
Sabïre – Jät CD/2xLP (Listenable)
Sabïre began at the tail end of 2010 as an idea to have a band that played simply what came naturally on guitar to Scarlett Monastyrski with no set genre or category. Simply natural music. Shortly thereafter, the concept grew to accompany that sound with a big show and distinctive stylisation. The biting and sharp sound production, along with their personal lyrics, created for them a label for their music: acid metal. [A black w/ blue marbled color vinyl pressing is available.]
Saliva Palth – Last Chance To See CD/LP (Danger Collective)
In 2013, a New Zealand teenager named Daniel Johann Lines quietly uploaded his debut album, Melanchole, to Bandcamp under the moniker Salvia Palth. The LP was a homespun collection full of vulnerable, self-recorded songs about the overwhelming messiness that comes from growing up and figuring out who you are. Despite modest intentions, the record resonated profoundly with millions on platforms like Tumblr and YouTube, maintaining momentum through the TikTok and streaming era. Menchole remains a wildly influential lo-fi release, a moving portrait of youth in turmoil. Over a decade later, Lines returns to the project with a new full-length titled Last Chance To See.
Scarcity – The Promise Of Rain CD/LP/Cassette (The Flenser)
The Promise Of Rain, the sophomore album of the experimental black metal band Scarcity, is an embodiment of the hard-to-believe truth that burdens are easier to bear when distributed, a realization Brendon Randall-Myers (conductor of the Glenn Branca Ensemble) grappled with extensively while writing this record. This is a sweat-drenched album about dispersion, about spreading, about the collective relieving of burdens through shared experience: one doesn’t have to go through everything alone. [A color vinyl pressing is available.]
Slaughter Messiah – Exorcized To None CDEP/12” (High Roller)
It’s been five years since Slaughter Messiah released their debut album Cursed To The Pyre, which after several long sold-out short format releases and demos (compiled as “Putrid Decade of Morbid Terror” in 2021) put them at the forefront of the international scene with their signature black speed metal sound. Now the Belgian four-piece finally shows a new sign of life in the shape of Exorcized To None, an EP featuring one new song and two re-recorded classics plus all three tracks as live renditions from shows in Poland, Germany and Austria. [Multiple vinyl colorways are available.]
Bette Smith – Goodthing CD/LP (Bette Smith)

[An indie store exclusive gold color vinyl pressing is available.]
Son Of Dave – A Flat City CD/LP (Goddam)
Son Of Dave’s 11th album kicks off with homecoming outbursts. After 26 years in London UK, he’s back in the Canadian Prairies demanding as much attention as always. Themes of flat Midwest cities, classic rock lovin’ truckers, and a weird call for More Mayonnaise will keep his multitude of international fans chuckling. The usual Son Of Dave bag of tricks colors the album: blues-harmonica, beat-box, cheap electric guitar, and that voice that shouts and croons his own brand of Blues infused old-school R&B. As always, he messes with different rhythms: funk, boogaloo, rock-steady, or techno, always doing it his own way.
Speed – Only One Mode CD/LP/Cassette (Flatspot)
Speed is a hardcore band from Australia who surpassed what they thought they might do at the start, and has since doubled down, Only One Mode, as fast and as hard as possible. Times is our most personal album since The Man Who,” says Fran Healy. “There was a lot of big stuff to write about back then, the tectonic plates had shifted in my life. I was 22 when I was writing those songs. They were my therapy. Over 20 years later and the plates have shifted again.

Cosmic Psychos – Go The Hack [Reissue/1989] LP (Goner)
“Sometime in the winter of 1989-90, I wandered into New York City’s Midnight Records, a store famous for it’s deep catalog of ’60s garage and psychedelic music, as well as a strong selection of classic punk rock and a cantankerous French owner with ridiculous hair. On this visit, instead of hearing a puny French bootleg of The Standells or the Seeds, as I opened the door I was enveloped in the massive opening chords to the first song on the Cosmic Psychos’ then-new album Go The Hack. “She’s a lost cause / She’s a lost, lost cause!” blasted into the air at maximum volume. In a perfect cinematic moment, the drums announced my entry, the bass dictated my walk, the air became thick with guitar fuzz and wah-wah, and snarled vocals described perfectly a girl’s descent into a cause which was lost. Instead of record shopping, I felt like I’d stepped into a biker movie and was motoring down a long, straight Outback road on a Harley. This was my introduction to the Cosmic Psychos, and I was hooked.” -Eric Friedl, Oblivians / Goner Records

The Donnas – Spend The Night [Reissue/2002] LP (Real Gone Music)
Hot pink colorway. Having lovingly reissued the first four albums by our all-time favorite all-female punk band, we now turn our attention to The Donnas’ major label debut for the Atlantic label, where they went after recording a quartet of classics for Lookout! 2002’s Spend The Night was by far the band’s most popular album, hitting 62 on the Billboard charts, but it wasn’t just the major label distribution mojo that upped the sales. This record doesn’t have a dud on it and boasts such Donnas devastators as “Who Invited You,” “Take It Off,” “You Wanna Get Me High,” and “Pass It Around.”
D&V – The Nearest Door [Reissue/1983] 12” (One Little Independent)

Flotsam & Jetsam – Flotsam & Jetsam [Reissue/2016] LP (AFM)
Flotsam And Jetsam’s 2016 studio album marked one of the highlights in the band’s history. Brimming with confidence, the power/thrash cult band from Phoenix (Arizona) made it their “self-titled” one. And it’s all there: Flotsam And Jetsam has the characteristic guitar work, high intensity, great melodies and towering above it all: Erik A.K. – one of the finest voices in metal.
Font – Strange Burden LP (Acrophase)
It’s tempting to intellectualize Font, the Austin-based quintet whose driving music of sampled stabs, dance beats, and euphoric choruses could be labeled with all manner of hyphenated pseudo-genres (“art-rock,” “dance-punk,” “noise-pop”). However, their music quickly makes clear the inadequacy of those kinds of labels.
Lupe Fiasco – Now Playing LP (Atlantic)
Limited translucent red color vinyl LP pressing. This tracklist features chart-topping hits like “The Show Goes On” and “Superstar” that blend catchy beats with meaningful lyrics. Fruit Bats – The Ruminant Band LP (Sub Pop)
Fruit Bats celebrate the 15th anniversary of their acclaimed 2009 album The Ruminant Band with a new, limited-edition pink vinyl pressing. Over the course of the band’s prior three records, Eric D. Johnson’s Fruit Bats have looked for ways to file down the cynical edge of modern life and found many. Using bright melodies, defiantly major-key chord structures, natural imagery mixed with the occasional blazing insight and tender observation, the Fruit Bats have never shied away from darkness, but more uncommon now, they’ve refused to shy away from light. With The Ruminant Band, this tradition continues in characteristically rich and involving fashion.
John Frusciante – Niandra LaDes And Usually Just A T-Shirt [Reissue/1994] 2xLP (Superior Viaduct)
Niandra LaDes And Usually Just A T-Shirt is the first solo record by John Frusciante.
Between 1990 and 1992 the guitarist made a series of 4-track recordings, which at the time were not intended for commercial release. After leaving the band Red Hot Chili Peppers in 1992, Frusciante was encouraged by friends to release the material that he wrote in his spare time during the Blood Sugar Sex Magik sessions. Originally released on Rick Rubin’s American Recordings label in 1994, Niandra LaDes is a mystifying work of tortured beauty.
Frusciante plays various acoustic and electric guitars, experimenting with layers of vocals, piano and reverse tape effects. Channeling the ghosts of Syd Barrett and Skip Spence, his lyrics are at once utterly personal and willfully opaque.
Future Teens – Hard Feelings [Reissue/2017] LP (Take This To Heart)

Dizzy Gillespie – The Ebullient Mr. Gillespie [Reissue/1959] LP (Verve)
The band Gillespie assembled for this date – Junior Mance, Les Spann, Sam Jones, & Lex Humphries – was for the most part a working band on the club & concert circuit, offering a mixture of Gillespie’s entertaining songs, established repertoire, & some Latin & African-influenced pieces. With them, Dizzy found a middle ground in his music that gave his legacy room to breathe, but with much more rhythmic variety.
Dexter Gordon – North Sea Jazz Concert Series 1979 LP (North Sea Jazz)
White colorway. Dexter Gordon (1923 – 1990) was a giant in every respect. Both his height and his playing exuded authority. He had the power to draw conclusions amid many musical impressions and, carefree of other people’s opinions, said/played things as they were. He was one of the first tenor saxophonists to play modern jazz after the big band style, making him a source of inspiration for many. On July 15, 1979, he joined North Sea Jazz with his accompanying trio consisting of pianist Kirk Lightsey, bassist Rufus Reid and drummer Eddie Gladden.

Lake Saint Daniel – Small Thoughts LP (Take This To Heart)
Lake Saint Daniel is the project of artist/producer Daniel Radin (Future Teens). Growing up in Massachusetts, his dad would play James Taylor every night while making dinner and Daniel couldn’t stand it. However, after years of making emo-influenced power pop with his band Future Teens, Daniel’s inherited love of gentle melodies began to peak through the cracks of his work. This eventually led to Good Things, Lake Saint Daniel’s debut, a record about nostalgia, sentimentality and reckoning with growing older.
Lana Del Rabies – Shadow World [Reissue/2018] LP (Deatbomb Arc)

Full of discovery and wonderment, Glimpses of Infinity is a miraculous chronicle of new age’s most fabled artist. [Multiple colorways are available.]
Tomutonttu Ja Lehtisalo – Tomutonttu Ja Lehtisalo LP (VHF)
Finland has long had a uniquely progressive underground, with thriving punk, avant, jazz, and rock scenes with oversized output and impact. Jussi Lehtisalo’s (Circle, Pharaoh Overlord, Mahti, etc.) label Ektro has been at the center of this activity for the last three decades, with a stream of excellent and conceptually bonkers releases covering music of all types. Here Lehtisalo joins up with Jan Anderzén (of Kemialliset Ystävät among others) for an album of fun and unusual miniature duets that sound like alien Library music beamed in from the outer-lands.
Leisure Hour – The Sunny Side LP (Joyful Services)
Color vinyl pressing. “Everyone you love will end up dead,” Isaiah Neal sings on “Ivy Tech,” the second track from Leisure Hour’s upcoming The Sunny Side. It’s a matter-of-fact lyrics delivered in a matter-of-fact way-but a second later, Grace Dudas and Raegan Gordon join in to harmonize on a booming “whoa-oh-oh-oh” chorus. In the span of about three seconds, Leisure Hour’s whole ethos becomes clear. The Sunny Side is the result of years of writing and recording, the culmination of a half-decade of lineup changes; by now, Leisure Hour’s reached their final form: bassist/vocalist Dudas, guitarist/vocalist Neal, and drummer/vocalist Gordon.
Cassandra Lewis – Lost In A Dream LP (Elektra)
Portland, OR based singer/songwriter Cassandra Lewis has a cosmic blend of classic country, Americana and psychedelic soul. She’ll call you into her journey of self-discovery, addiction, love affairs, and a fever dream of in-betweens. Think Dolly Parton, Etta James, and Jeff Buckley at Woodstock 69′, then sprinkle it with something otherworldly. Her massive voice, real talk, and wild storyteller’s wit will leave you feeling raw and reeling in the dreamiest way.
Listening – Listening [Reissue/1968] LP (Real Gone Music)
Coke bottle clear w/ yellow swirl. While most of the bands (Orpheus, Ultimate Spinach, Beacon Street Union) associated with producer Alan Lorber’s “Bosstown Sound” signed with MGM Records, Listening recorded their only album in 1968 with Vanguard. And it’s a highly prized one, at that, with original copies selling for triple figures. One reason for that is, unlike many of their more poppy Boston-based peers, Listening boasted an original, swirling, hard-edged sound, full of jazzy and even proggy passages, and keyboardist/singer/songwriter Michael Tschudin’s lyrics were openly countercultural. That’s future (post-Lou Reed) Velvet Underground member Walter Powers on bass, and blues wunderkind Peter Malick on guitar.
Lumberob – Hunter Gather LP (Joyful Services)
Clear vinyl pressing. Lumberob has always strived for maximalist sonic vaudeville, always hoped for real electro gabber hardcore noise art, always grabbed for frenzied illegibility, always lurched loosely improvised from a psych-swamp of love. On the new album, Hunter Gather, Lumberob swings swanky as proper pop deviance. Built from the same loopy logic which drives the stomping slaphappy force of his live show, these tunes are crafted out of lovely and weirdly thunk out loud and large soundscapes.
Shelby Lynne – I Am Shelby Lynne [Reissue/1999] LP (Monument)
Limited edition color vinyl celebrating 25 years of Grammy-award winner, Shelby Lynne’s album, I Am Shelby Lynne.
Magazine Beach – Constant Springtime LP (Take This To Heart)
Constant Springtime is the full-length debut of Washington D.C.’s Magazine Beach. Written over two years, the album aims to be intentional, emotive, and radically different from the band’s previous work. They focused on writing only the 11 songs featured on the album, engaging in extensive individual and collective writing sessions. The result is a cohesive work that distills their favorite emo, hardcore, folk, and power pop elements while examining the concept of “the Album” as a medium.
Mahti – Konsertti I 2xLP (VHF)
Third album from Finnish group Mahti, a collaboration between three members of stalwart avant-rock legends Circle and Hannu Saha. Saha plays the Kantele, a traditional Finnish acoustic instrument which can have five, ten, fifteen, or thirty-six strings, and which is plucked like a zither or harp, producing a delicate string sound. Charles Mingus was a virtuoso bass player, accomplished pianist, band leader and composer. Born on a military base in Nogales, Arizona in 1922 and raised in Watts, California, his earliest musical influences came from the church- choir and group singing- and from “hearing Duke Ellington over the radio when [he] was eight years old.” His early professional experience, in the 40’s, found him touring with bands like Louis Armstrong, Kid Ory and Lionel Hampton. Mingus’ career has spanned three-decades and he collaborated with other jazz legends such as Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie, and Herbie Hancock. However, the prospect of writing new music in their unique death/thrash metal style was one of the main reasons why the core members reunited in 2010 in the first place.

Sissy Spacek – Diaphanous LP (To Live A Lie)
At the intersection of the two extreme genres of noise and grindcore, Sissy Spacek has been an ongoing artistic process to create anxiety inducing chaotic music. The band has gone back to it’s basics with a lineup of its core member John Wiese and longtime collaborator Charlie Mumma (who you may know from Bloddy Phoenix or his contributions to Knelt Rote). Diaphanous is a mess of blast beats, noise walls, and ardent screaming. The music is both artistic and unstructured – is it high culture or lowbrow?

Sonny Stitt – Blows The Blues [Reissue/1970] LP (Verve)
Sonny Stitt led several excellent record dates in 1959, especially at the end of the year when he produced three LPs for Verve over a span of three sessions with pianist Lou Levy, bassist Leroy Vinnegar and drummer Mel Lewis. Playing alto sax throughout this album, Stitt hardly sounds like a Charlie Parker clone, something that unfortunately was a frequent claim by tin-eared critics throughout a fair portion of his career. The music includes several potent originals, especially “Hymnal Blues” and the slow, powerful “Morning After Blues.” Originally released in 1970.

Swim Deep – There’s A Big Star Outside LP (Submarine)
In some ways, Swim Deep’s fourth album – full of acoustic guitars and floral notes courtesy of a Mellotron keyboard (one of the finest musical exports from their native Birmingham) – has no business being as luscious and evolved as it is. But There’s A Big Star Outside could only have surfaced because of such testing years. It takes the youthful dreaming of their debut, and the excitable experimentalism of its follow-ups, and leads it to a more assured space, aided hugely by the input of producer Bill Ryder-Jones, who became a mentor throughout the journey.
Tamba 4 – Samba Blim [Reissue/1968] LP (Endless Happiness)
This is the second incredible album which the Brazilian bossa combo Tamba 4 did in the US for A&M Records, during the brief time when they were expanded to a quartet from the original Tamba Trio lineup. This album can be considered a masterpiece that combines their original style with American sophistication. The set is completely sublime. A wonderful mix of the group’s trademark harmony vocals and crackling bossa rhythms, with the warmly flowing CTI production style of the time — not funky like the CTI sound of the ’70s, but a bit more sophisticated than the style Creed Taylor had been using earlier at Verve. Tracks are short, breezy, and often very lively — bossa grooving warmed in the California sun.
Luke Temple & The Cascading Moms – Certain Limitations LP (Western Vinyl)
Lauded for his contributions to Here We Go Magic and Art Feynman, Luke Temple brings his signature off-kilter grooves and melodies to his new project’s debut album Certain Limitations. The trio’s sound takes influence from the likes of Dire Straits and The Velvet Underground, weaving together intricate guitar work, and a propulsive rhythm section, with a touch of jazz sensibility that recalls the ECM catalog. A product of serendipity, The Cascading Moms were formed when in need of a band for an upcoming show, Temple brought together Kosta Galanopolous, a collaborator from his Art Feynman project, and Stuart, a musician he already knew in LA.

After finalizing the line-up with vocalist Spencer Chamberlain, the band recorded They’re Only Chasing Safety with producer James Paul Wisner (Dashboard Confessional, Further Seems Forever, Paramore). In the heavy and punk music scene, the album is considered a watershed moment. The blend of heavy metal and hardcore influences with a strong pop/punk sensibility spawned a new branch of heavy music.

Scarcity – The Promise Of Rain (The Flenser)
The Promise Of Rain, the sophomore album of the experimental black metal band Scarcity, is an embodiment of the hard-to-believe truth that burdens are easier to bear when distributed, a realization Brendon Randall-Myers (conductor of the Glenn Branca Ensemble) grappled with extensively while writing this record. This is a sweat-drenched album about dispersion, about spreading, about the collective relieving of burdens through shared experience: one doesn’t have to go through everything alone.
