Bizhiki – Unbound CD/LP (Jagjaguwar)
Unbound opens with a single, trembling chord that rises and descends before meeting a warm, beguiling voice, a voice singing in a tradition that’s been heard in this northern river country for millennia. The music that follows is a soulful dialogue between the ancient tradition of powwow singing and a contemporary musical palette. On Unbound, the powwow style of singing is entwined with synthesized voice modulation, and hand drumming is accented with electronic samples and beats – the harmonies and resonances are equal parts cultural and musical. Geographically, Bizhiki is almost wholly a made-in-Wisconsin project, a collaboration between Dylan Bizhikiins Jennings, Joe Rainey and the multi-instrumentalist Sean Carey (S. Carey), who for years has been a secret weapon within the Bon Iver family. [A color vinyl pressing is available.]

The historical value of this recording is incalculable, and it gathers in 21 pieces an anthology of flamenco where most of its variants are represented (tangos, soleá, seguiriyas, bulerías…). Nearly a decade after their last album, Lilacs and Champagne picks up right where that record, Midnight Features Vol. 2: Made Flesh, left off. Gram Parsons And The Fallen Angels – The Last Roundup – Live From The Bijou Cafe In Philadelphia 3/16/73 CD (Amoeba)
Released late last year on vinyl – now available on CD. Live archive release. In early 1973, Gram Parsons embarked on a tour to promote his recently released first solo album GP. Gram put together a great band, including the then unknown Emmylou Harris as his singing partner. The shows were somewhat uneven at first, but by midtour the band started to find its groove. One show stood out to pedal steel player Neil Flanz – the 3rd night at the Bijou Cafe in Philadelphia. Neil felt that this was the best show of the tour and requested a copy of the soundboard recording. He saved it for almost 40 years when it was acquired by Amoeba Music for a future Gram release. It then disappeared in the Amoeba vault for another 10 years before it was rediscovered when Amoeba moved to a new location in LA. It turns out Neil was right. This is Gram and Emmylou at their finest. And it’s the next to last club date ever of Gram and the Fallen Angels.

The Adverts – Cast Of Thousands [Reissue/1979] LP (Call Of The Void)
Originally released to a fan base and music press that were unprepared for the band to move on from the punk fury of Crossing The Red Sea, The Adverts’ Cast Of Thousands has since been recognized as a lost classic of the time. TV Smith’s cutting observational lyrics and sharp musical instincts saw his song writing grow and move in unexpected directions. The primal thumping was replaced by dynamic and driving drumming, acoustic guitars and probing solos emerged, and Tim Cross joined to add keyboards and fill out the overall sound. The one constant was the pounding throb of Gaye Advert’s bass. Encouraged to experiment by surprise producer Tom Newman (Mike Oldfield Tubular Bells) the band found themselves stretching creatively, both in song writing and recording techniques.

Aldn – Greenhouse LP (Many Hats Dist)
Growing up in Virginia in the early oughts, Aldn was skateboarding and playing video games like most preteen kids when his older brother introduced him to a new toy: an Ableton launchpad. By the time he was a precocious 12, he had acquired one of his own for his birthday. Still in the discovery phase of his own musical education, he absorbed everything, and was especially drawn towards artists that were abrasively themselves, whether it be the rave in the sky dubstep of early Skrillex, Linkin Park’s anthemic grunge or A Tribe Called Quest’s inimitably cool and distinguished rhymes. Before Pollen existed and the New Yorker was writing think-pieces on the irrelevance of genre, Aldn already felt a kinship for the unending potential that comes with making sounds that nobody else has heard before.

Arm’s Length – Never Before Seen, Never Again Found LP (Wax Bodega)
Midnight haze colorway. Never Before Seen, Never Again Found is the debut LP from Quinte West, Ontario band Arm’s Length. Along with its title, titanic emo punk compositions, and melodic beauty, Never Before Seen, Never Again Found feels like a defining record of a new generation of emo because of where it’s from: three young people grappling with the brutality, confusion, and deep-rooted family traumas of 21st century life amid the funerals, farm fields, and strip malls of a rural, small-town Ontario community, with little hope of getting out. It is a record that is, like all great emo records, stuck in a pit of darkness, clawing and fighting like hell to get into the light.
Ashrr – Sunshine Low LP (20/20 Vision)

The songs here are as sincere as they are surreal, rooted in rich character studies and deep reflection, and the production is intoxicating to match, blending lo-fi intimacy and trippy psychedelia into a mesmerizing swirl of analog and electronic sounds. Add it all together and you’ve got a gorgeous collection of stripped-down bedroom folk wrapped in lush layers of synthesizers and washed-out electric guitars, a poignant, expansive exploration of perception and purpose that manages to look both forwards and backwards all at once.

Absurd, anarchic, and powerfully psychedelic, Camembert Electrique is the second album by Gong. Originally released in France on BYG/Actuel in 1971, then licensed to a young Richard Branson for his fledgling Virgin label in the UK in 1974, this iconic and influential recording is still devastatingly fresh sounding in the 21st century. Hot Mulligan – You’ll Be Fine [Reissue/2020] LP (Wax Bodega)
Back cherry vinyl pressing of Hot Mulligan’s second full length album. Hot Mulligan are on that emo bullshit. All of it: alternate tunings, capos, and twinkle riffs dangling like loose cardigan threads, but also pick slides and power chords as slick and shiny as a Drive Thru sampler CD. Painfully earnest lyrics about cars, funerals, faded pictures, and cigarettes, but also non-sequitur in-joke song titles. Shouting matches between the yelpy guy and the guy who can sorta sing for real.

Jack Sh*t – Another F***ing Party LP (Devil’s Tower)
The dynamic debut album from Nashville’s Jack Sh*t, Another F***ing Party, is exactly what it sounds like: the musical version of a hangover-the morning after, when we must decide whether to own up to the headache or to crack a cold one early and roll it on over. Is it good? Is it bad? Really, it’s a cycle that we all find ourselves falling into sometimes, when the good times last forever, until it almost feels like torture.

After hearing 78s by such luminaries as Lonnie Johnson and Blind Lemon Jefferson, the young guitarist decided to pursue a career in blues. He moved to Gary, Indiana where he recorded his first disc for Parrot Records, and in 1956 relocated to Missouri where he began playing his signature Gibson Flying V electric guitar, which he named “Lucy”. In 1959 he signed to the Bobbin label racking up several regional hits before joining Stax Records in the mid- ‘60s and becoming an international star.

Color vinyl pressing. Magic Shoppe is known for their wall of guitar sound. Drawing stylistic inspiration from My Bloody Valentine, The Jesus and Mary Chain, The Raveonettes, Sonic Youth and Loop, the band has a heavy shoegaze sound that flirts with the outer edges of noise rock. Dark, fuzzed-out guitars can wash into soundscapes, or crash into a sonic maelstrom.
Mates Of State – Re-arrange Us [Reissue/2008] LP (Barsuk)
Silver colorway. They move beyond these boundaries (Kori’s traditional organ sound is a distant memory, replaced with organic piano and synth sounds) with additional instrumentation including lush strings, guitar, and horns to back up their already-honed melodic songwriting, which continues to shine on instantly indelible gems like “Get Better,” “Now,” and “Jigsaw.” Both this newfound broadening of instrumentation and the increased emergence of both Mates’ lead vocals signal the next stage of the band’s evolution.
Tate McRae – The One Day LP (Nettwerk)

Jeff Mills – The Eyewitness 2xLP (Axis)
The Eyewitness is an album from Jeff Mills, and it is composed from the perspective of an unknowingly complicit bystander, and it is at the very least, psychologically pathological in nature. What this release is essentially proposing is an admission to the diagnosis that no one is immune to shock and trauma. The Eyewitness reveals a habitual pattern in the way it symbolizes a mirror reflection of mankind in its most vulnerable moments. As an artist, what Mills is notoriously known for is the perspectives and paths he chooses to approach hefty, complex, and sometimes, awkward subjects.
Monoxide – The Chainsmoker II LP (Majik Ninja Ent.)
Gold colorway. After 20 years, Twiztid’s Monoxide aka the Chainsmoker is back with his follow up to the 2004 Chainsmoker LP with The Chainsmoker II complete with 13 tracks featuring Twiztid partner Jamie Madrox and MNE labelmates Blaze, Boondox, The R.O.C., James Garcia, G-Mo Skee, & Joe Black.

Tess Parks – Blood Hot [Reissue/2013] LP (Optic Nerve)

Alan McGee himself said: “She’s only 24 and is already an amazing songwriter… she just doesn’t quite know she is yet … her most beautiful quality is her lack of ego. Tess is an amazing lady”. Influences include Elliott Smith, friends the Dandy Warhols and all the classics: “I was brought up on Bob Dylan, Nirvana, The Beatles, Rolling Stones and Zeppelin.” She met Alan McGee in London. “We stayed in touch, that was it really. I just got so lucky. I love Oasis, Jesus and Mary Chain, My Bloody Valentine… He’s affiliated with all of my favorite musicians.”

Rippikoulu’s Musta Seremonia is both an international cult item and an integral part of the history of Svart Records as well – a reissue of the original 1993 tape was one of the earliest Svart releases. Back then, this album was considered as one of the best kept secrets in the Finnish underground metal scene. [A transparent red w/ black smoke colorway is available.]
Pete Rock – Petestrumentals 2 [Reissue/2015] LP (Mello Music)
Limited metallic gold colored vinyl LP pressing. Includes sticker. Pete Rock is the man who J Dilla told, “I wanted to be like you.” Kanye once called himself the “new Pete Rock.” But the original Pete Rock remains permanently vital. The evidence bangs in his 2015 opus, Petestrumentals 2, the sequel to the 2001 classic that helped define the hip-hop instrumental record. It marks the legend’s first album on Mello Music Group, a fitting union between the author of the boom-bap blueprint and the label that’s expanded upon his legacy. Petestrumentals 2 conjures memories of BBQ cookouts and ‘70s Blaxploitation scores, rattling summer jeep cruises and blunted Jamaican vacations.

Greg Saunier – We Sang, Therefore We Were LP (Joyful Noise)
Color vinyl pressing. It’s already hard to describe what Deerhoof sounds like. So we’ll skip that part and say this sounds a lot like Deerhoof with a different singer. And in keeping with 30-year Hoofian tradition, melodies soar, big hit earwigs abound, harmonies are complex, and keys change frequently and unexpectedly. Arrangements are in a constant state of impatient agitation. Emotions run high but delivery is usually a falsetto deadpan. We Sang, Therefore We Were is grief delivered in code.
The Sidewinders – Flatfoot Hustlin’ [Reissue/1977] LP (Groove Diggers)

Now the Belgian four-piece finally shows a new sign of life in the shape of Exorcized To None, an EP featuring one new song and two re-recorded classics plus all three tracks as live renditions from shows in Poland, Germany and Austria.
Slayer – Repentless [Reissue/2015] LP (Nuclear Blast)
Slayer – Repentless Killogy (Live AT The Forum In Inglewood, CA) 2xLP (Nuclear Blast)
Two new splatter colorways. For nearly four decades, Slayer’s onslaught has proven the band to be the supreme thrash-metal band on the planet. The two-time Grammy-winning band has also
accumulated an abundance of Certified Gold Albums along with Best… awards from media outlets all over the world, including Kerrang!, SPIN, Metal Hammer, Revolver, and Esquire. Throughout Slayer’s history, the band has never faltered in unleashing it’s extreme and focused sonic assault, and, unlike many of its contemporaries who commercialized their sound, Slayer has remained crushing and brutal, steadfastly refusing to cater to the mainstream.
Sleep Token – Take Me Back To Eden 2xLP (Spinefarm)
Two new colorways. Take Me Back To Eden is the spectacular final chapter to the trilogy that started with their 2019 debut album, Sundowning. More than an hour of music across 12 distinctive tracks, it features the heaviest moments thus far recorded by Sleep Token (“Chokehold” & “The Summoning”), along with some of the most commercial and certainly the most emotional, with a slew of other tones, textures and tangents touched on in-between. Sleep Token boldly reconfirms a true love of the epic (the title track is eight minutes plus), whilst further exploring and developing those elements that keep the music removed from any kind of pack, howling at a moon that’s all its own.
Slow Pulp – EP2 / Big Day LP (Miscellaneous)

The band intended to create a compilation album that appealed to the casual consumer.
Vince Staples – Dark Times LP (Def Jam)
Dark Times is the sixth studio album by rapper Vince Staples. Dark Times serves as the Long Beach rapper’s sixth studio album and is a snapshot of Staples presently: on top of the world on the surface, but reality might be trickier. Throughout the album’s thirteen tracks, he grapples with life’s heaviness, all while understanding what the gravity of his work means in the grand scheme of things.
Stillborn – Netherworlds 2xLP (Black Lodge)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Following the monumental success of their previous album Nocturnals, the band unleashes an even darker opus that pays homage to their cult classic Necrospirituals while carving out new realms of sonic exploration. Focusing on beautifully intimate three-part harmonies, the trio’s enticing signature sound offered exquisite, reimagined versions of songs from across a spectrum of styles and quickly drove them to viral success.
Phil Upchurch – Tell The Truth! LP (Evidence Music)
Phil Upchurch is the kind of guitarist who makes a strong point by what he chooses not to play. There are speedier chopsmeisters, players who undertake more daring intervallic leaps, those who navigate trickier lines, but it would be hard to imagine a more soulful guitarist than Upchurch. From his laidback phrasing on Nat Adderley’s bluesy boogaloo “Jive Samba” to his buttery-smooth vocal inflections on Steely Dan’s “Jack of Speed” and on the bluesy title track, Upchurch’s understated approach on Tell The Truth! is more about pure feeling than technique.
Various Artists – Sun Records Sings Elvis Presley LP (Sun)
Elvis Presley was undoubtedly Sun Records’ biggest star, burning brightly during his tenure at the label from 1953 to 1955. 2024 marks the 70th anniversary of the release of Elvis’ first single, “That’s All Right,” on Sun Records. This collection is Elvis as interpreted by his Sun contemporaries like Jerry Lee Lewis, Johnny Cash, and Roy Orbison, sharing their versions of songs Elvis made famous. Guthrie also remastered the album for vinyl earlier this year. While originally intended to be the band’s first album, their label Capitol Records shelved the recording and sent them back into the studio with producer Lincoln Fong (Moose), resulting in their first album released with the title Marigolds.
Weather Report – Live In London LP (Trading Places)
Weather Report’s long and illustrious career had many twists, turns and revelations. Live In London draws on the best moments of performances delivered at the Hammersmith Odeon in June 1983, with former Chic percussionist Jose Rossy, plus a take of “Corner Pocket” as played at the Dominion Theatre one year later with Mino Cinelu. Mainstay Joe Zawinul mans the ship alongside saxophonist Wayne Shorter, this edition of WR driven by the frantic beats of Omar Hakim and the bass of Victor Bailey, less showy than Jaco yet just as engaging. Initially cut for radio broadcast, fans of late-era Weather Report will love every moment.
Irvine Weldon – Young, Gifted And Broke [Reissue/1977] LP (Groove Diggers)
