The Bamboos – Night Time People CD/LP (BMG)
Melbourne nine-piece funk-soul powerhouse The Bamboos (showcasing the winning combination of guitarist/leader Lance Ferguson and vocalist Kylie Auldist) return with their eighth studio effort and first album in five years, Night Time People. Lead single “Lit Up” is built upon an insanely catchy piano riff and the best use of cowbell since “Honky Tonk Women.” In contrast to that, Auldist sings of trying to hide away from her pain: “When the sun goes down, feel my heart fill up with regret.” It’s a unique balance of irresistible groove and raw emotion which could well answer the question George Clinton asked many years ago: “what is soul?”

Harlan T. Bobo – A History Of Violence CD/LP (Goner)
Recently released on vinyl – now available on CD. Vince Guaraldi – The Complete Warner Bros. – Seven Arts Recordings 2xCD (Omnivore)
All three Warner-Seven Arts albums remastered on two CDs. Includes for previously unissued bonus tracks. In 1968, Vince Guaraldi made a label switch from his long-time home, Fantasy Records, to his new label, Warner Bros. For his inaugural album Oh, Good Grief!, on which he re-interprets his previously recorded Peanuts classics, he added electric guitar and electric harpsichord to the mix. 1969’s The Eclectic Vince Guaraldi lived up to its title and found Guaraldi experimenting with everything from a large string section, to his first recorded vocal debut (covering the singer/songwriter, Tim Hardin), to original compositions that could be described as lengthy rock jams. Guaraldi’s last album for the label and last ever album, 1970’s Alma-Ville, ranks among his best-ever albums. Six of the nine songs that appear on this ‘return to jazz’ project were Guaraldi originals and recorded with several different ensembles. Besides the original compositions, Alma-Ville finds Guaraldi covering The Beatles’ “Eleanor Rigby” which had become a staple of his live performances, Duke Pearson’s “Cristo Redentor” and the Michel Legrand/Norman Gimbel song “Watch What Happens”. Hamish Kilgour – Finklestein CD/LP (Ba Da Bing)
The Clean member Hamish Kilgour’s second-ever solo album, Finklestein, flips the singer/guitarist/drummer’s path taken on All Of It And Nothing. Having previously gone for intimate, minimalistic performances, this album displays a chock-full production quality akin to a fairytale. It’s a fitting change, seeing as the songs are based around a children’s story Kilgour conceived for his son about a kingdom that invents a way of dealing with their depleting gold resources. The songs include organ, saxophone, pedal steel, piano, vibraphone, harmonica, even footsteps (Kilgour is renowned for his stepping), most of it performed by him and his producer/collaborator Gary Olsen.
Lavender Flu – Mow The Glass CD/LP (In The Red)
This album is a reflection of the live experience. Four people playing together; working within the template of pop classicism. Thirty-five minutes of music. This time, the Flu comes out of the water and spends a little more time on land: pop kicks, psychedelic derangement, beauty, spells cast via hate raga and rocker. The band moves backward, forward and sideways; often within the same piece. The music breathes. It doesn’t deal in nostalgic regression or self-conscious futurism. It just sounds like the Lavender Flu.
Lucifer – Lucifer II CD/LP+CD (Century Media)
While they still cite Black Sabbath, Deep Purple, Blue Öyster Cult, Steppenwolf, 70’s Heart and Fleetwood Mac as influences, the songwriting, sound and diversity of Lucifer II marks a giant leap for the band. [Limited edition yellow colored vinyl pressing also available.]

[Vinyl edition due July 20.]
The Nude Party – The Nude Party CD/LP+MP3 (New West)
The Nude Party – one of 2018’s most groovy and dynamic rock records was produced by Oakley Munson of The Black Lips and recorded in Woodstock, NY at Dreamland Recording Studios, the circa-1896 former St. John’s Church. The album finds that formidable music machine cranked all the way to cosmic. Maybe it’s the electric waters of Lake Norman, NC where the band spent a primordial summer, or the upstate New York vibes that have beckoned American spiritualists and storytellers for a dozen generations, but something gives these cats a glow. At very least the numerology scans. Even when heartbreak crashes the party, like on the hilarious “Records”, the buoyancy of the band’s demeanor negates in the inevitable bummer. From the self-aware irreverence of “Chevrolet Van” to the apocalyptic resignation of “War Is Coming”, The Nude Party surfs heavy wavelengths with elegance and grace.
Power – Turned On CD/LP (In The Red)
Three days in the studio has given birth to a titan-a thunderous recording that’d make Lemmy and the fellas blush. From the get-go there’s an outrageousness in songwriting that is present on many classic rock ‘n’ roll follow up albums. Stomping boogie, raw glam, punk ‘n’ roll, blues bashing and primitive heavy metal exaltation. There’s not a moment of falter or doubt to be heard, it’s purely sweat and confidence here.
RP Boo – I’ll Tell You What CD/LP (Planet Mu)
Layering decades of samples from yesteryear to the present over his commanding vocal cut-ups, Chicago footwork godfather RP Boo transports the listener to their own realm of the space-time continuum. He explores familiar motifs, such as the cosmos, movement, and opposition, using densely interwoven vocals, unpredictable percussion, and evil humming bass as his tools of choice. You could swap many of the tracks on this album with the tracklists of his old mixtapes and aside from some tape hiss, they wouldn’t be too out of place. The level of innovation has stayed the same for 20 years, as Boo’s music doesn’t follow the traditional rules of decay that most compositions do.

Veld – S.I.N. CD/LP (Listenable)
New album from the Belarus death metal band.
Years & Years – Palo Santo CD (Interscope)
A band intuitively connected to great, homespun British pop classicism, Palo Santo announces Years & Years’ ascension to the world stage. Part full-blooded, escapist fantasia and part social comment, this is outlier pop as futurism once more, offering solutions when the wider world is transforming beyond recognition. Drawing inspiration from cult sci-fi as the multi-sensory pop of Prince, Bowie or Gaga, the British electronica trio has created the perfect space in which to tell their most intimate, personal stories; on identity, sexuality, performance, and ultimately, what it means to be human. Vinyl edition due July 27.]

This Week’s Vinyl Exclusives:
Anemone – Baby Only You & I LP/Cassette (Luminelle Recordings)
Montreal-based Chloé Soldevila is extremely close to perfecting ’60s-influenced dream pop with her Anemone project. “There’s a clear link to Broadcast and Saint Etienne in the music of Anemone (who expand to a five-piece live, with Zachary Irving, Samuel Gemme, Miles Dupire-Gagnon and Gabriel Lambert), and as an organ dolorously drones through [title track “Baby Only You & I”] augmented by insistent percussion and a bobbing bass it’s difficult not to imagine this sitting comfortably alongside the best work of those bands.” – The Line Of Best Fit

The resultant 17-track collection, Sacrifices, is akin to watching an old photograph deteriorate in one’s hands, as otherwise dense beats disintegrate into airy expanses of emotionally resonant electronics.
