Marketing Program/ Banner/ Listening Station Titles Promoted This Week:
American Aquarium – Chicamacomico CD (Losing Side)
“Chicamacomico is a record about loss. Over a six-month span at the end of 2019/beginning of 2020, I lost my grandmother, my mother and watched as the world fell into a 2+ year pandemic that decimated businesses, relationships, and dreams. This is a record about dealing with those losses. My hope is these songs serve a salve for anyone else experiencing loss. A reminder that you are not the only one that lost a friend this year, or a parent, or a loved one. There’s a special kind of hope that comes from that realization. I am not alone. We enlisted Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Nathaniel Ratliffe, Waxahatchee) to produce the record and traveled to Sonic Ranch, a world-renowned recording complex tucked in the middle of a 1,700-acre pecan orchard, in the Texas border town of Tornillo. Over the course of ten days, we watched these songs go from simple folk ruminations into fully formed band arrangements.” – BJ Barham [Vinyl edition – including an indie store exclusive pressing – due August 19.]
Jerry Garcia & Merl Saunders – GarciaLive Volume 18: November 2nd, 1974 Keystone Berkeley 2xCD (Round Records/Virgin)
Produced from the original 1/4″ analog master reels, GarciaLive Vol. 18 presents this previously uncirculated performance captured at the Bay Area’s vaunted Keystone Berkeley. Garcia and Saunders are joined by John Kahn, Martin Fierro (Zero, Sir Douglas Quintet) and Paul Humphrey (Marvin Gaye, Joe Cocker, Lawrence Welk) for genre-bending explorations of R&B, reggae, jazz, and rock classics including “The Harder They Come”, “You Can Leave Your Hat On”, “Freedom Jazz Dance”, and more.
Patty Griffin – Tape CD (PGM)
The 2x Grammy-winner releases a collection of rare demos and lo-fi home recordings. “Only an artist as strong as Patty Griffin would overlook these ten great performances in search of ‘better’ material. Hindsight often has its advantages and time between can bring a new perspective as did here. Yet Griffin is unlike many other artists. She doesn’t offer up explanations for the inspiration for her songs. She rarely talks about themes or threads that run through her work. Yet, like many artists, she put the pandemic time off to good use, researching older material and in the process, making some new discoveries. Some of the songs she found were initially recorded alone in her home, singing into a recorder in the wee hours of the morning. A few were from an in-studio demo session in Nashville, including a duet with Robert Plant around the time they first met. She is all about the performances.” – Glide Magazine
Motionless In White – Scoring The End Of The World CD (Roadrunner)
“Vocalist Chris Motionless elaborated on the ambitious new project Scoring The End Of The World stating, “this is my love letter to you, our fans, for everything you have done for me over the course of some of the most mentally taxing few years I’ve had to go through. At times where I felt like my world was ending, as well as the world around us, it was always in my mind that I was able to turn to the special relationship we have created together for help, and I cannot thank you enough for that. Outside of my own personal experiences, it has been equally as fulfilling to me to see that in the face of tireless forces that continue to try and perpetuate hatred and negativity towards so many of us coexisting on this planet, we have all stood together to resist and fight back knowing that love and compassion will always prevail. We ARE the resistance. We ARE Cyberhex. I love you. Thank you.”
The Range – Mercury CD/LP+MP3 (Domino)
On Mercury, James Hinton builds on the techniques he established on his critically acclaimed 2016 LP Potential, seeking to create human connection in the Internet age through sampling vocalists from the corners of YouTube, Instagram, and Periscope. “I feel like I can find ways to express myself in ways that I’m too shy or unable to do in the real world,” Hinton says of the process. Mercury is moody, transportive, and undeniably rave-infused, and although it is indebted to IDM mainstays and grime pioneers, the album finds Hinton pushing himself outside the constraints of any one specific genre.
The Rolling Stones – Licked Live In NYC 2xCD/2xCD+DVD/2xCD+Blu-ray/3xLP (Mercury Studios/UMG)
To celebrate their 40th anniversary, The Rolling Stones embarked on a worldwide tour in 2002 and 2003 that would cover 117 shows in a variety of theatres, arenas, and stadiums. This show captures their January 2003 performance at Madison Square Garden in New York City and features a guest appearance from Sheryl Crow on “Honky Tonk Women”. Licked Live In NYC includes previously unreleased performances of “Start Me Up”, “Tumbling Dice”, “Gimme Shelter” & “Sympathy For The Devil”, along with three bonus performances from Amsterdam and rehearsal footage. [A limited-edition white color vinyl pressing is available.]
Read Southall Band – For The Birds CD/LP (Smoklahoma)
While impossible to pinpoint, the music on For the Birds could be called, well, timeless. It’s rock ‘n’ roll, and it doesn’t easily fall into labels like country, Southern rock, or classic rock. It’s ambitious to a degree that’s rare for a guitar-driven band in 2021 – witness the first single “Where We Belong”, an epic number that clocks in at a whopping six-plus minutes. You’re not going to find many albums that evoke both the likes of Waylon Jennings (“Here We Are”) or early grunge (“Out of My Mind”, which would sound just fine sandwiched between Temple Of The Dog and an early Smashing Pumpkins record). From classic to contemporary rock, these are songs that could appeal to the disparate fanbases of Gary Stewart, Joe Walsh, Rival Sons, or Chris Cornell.
Rufus Wainwright – Rufus Does Judy At Capitol Studios CD (BMG)
Rufus Does Judy At Capitol Studios finds Grammy Award-nominated singer/songwriter Rufus Wainwright performing his groundbreaking 2007 tribute to Judy Garland, Rufus Does Judy At Carnegie Hall, in its entirety, live from Los Angeles’ famed Capitol Studios. “The American Songbook and Judy Garland’s famed 1961 Carnegie Hall concert gave me a lot of hope after 9/11 and lead to the idea for my first song by song recreation of that show at the same venue,” says Wainwright. “It felt fitting to do the entire set again as the dazzling finale of my Rufus-Retro-Wainwright-Spective and hopefully the beginning of the finale of this global pandemic. Once again, these songs revealed their healing power. To be able to sing them in front of Renée, to sing with Kristin Chenoweth and still have my sister Martha be part of these shows was particularly meaningful although to sing them into the very microphone that Judy used for her recordings at Capitol Studios was the most mind-blowing.” [Vinyl edition due September 2.]

Leo Acosta – Acosta [Reissue/1970] LP (Mad About Records)
Leobardo Acosta Quintanar was born in Huetamo, Michoacán in 1925. He was a notable drummer, composer, arranger, and orchestrator. In 1970, he recorded a last LP for Capitol with a small combo formed with some of his closest peers. The sound engineer for these sessions, Rogiero Silva, recalls that it happened in the nighttime. Leo was always very demanding in his studio hours with all of his musicians and that he did not tolerate mistakes or setbacks, but he was fully relaxed and enjoying this one very much. For this last LP, entitled Acosta but known as “El Leon“, all the compositions are originals, unlike his previous albums where the labels required him to record at least 6 songs that were hits on the popularity charts.
In addition to such beloved songs as “City Lights”, “Still,” Po’ Folks”, “The Tip Of My Fingers”, and “Sometimes”, the album features a new song with Dolly Parton, “Some Day It Will All Make Sense”. The newly recorded duet is joined by Anderson and Parton’s first-ever collaboration, a rare demo of “If It Is All The Same To You”, recorded in 1964.
Michaela Anne – Oh To Be That Free CD/LP (Yep Roc)
Nashville, TN based songwriter Michaela Anne returns with her new album Oh To Be That Free, the follow up to her 2019 Yep Roc debut Desert Dove. “I wrote this collection of songs as a simultaneous reckoning and healing,” says Michaela Anne. “They came after a period in my life of self-sabotage and unraveling by my own doing. But during the making of this record, life altering experiences occurred and a deeper layer of meaning for these songs appeared. Between the time we started to record and the very final mastering, I conceived, grew, and birthed my first child. In the middle of this pregnancy, and the middle of making this record, my mother suffered a devastating and debilitating hemorrhagic stroke. These songs became healers for me as though I had written them for my future self.” [A limited-edition clear vinyl pressing is available.]

Bedouine – Waysides CD/LP (Figure 8 Media Inc.)
Waysides is the third collection of Bedouine songs. Comprised of older material and a cover, she’s playfully dubbed it “LP 2.5.” It summarizes her creative headspace over the last year and a half, tying together many songwriting threads that act as a prologue of sorts. “The luxury of time afforded this whole album,” she explained. “It feels like going back in time, uncovering little capsules. I would never have gotten to do this if I didn’t have this abundance of time at home. It was my silver lining in this mess and gave me purpose.”
Blanck Mass – Ted K (Original Motion Picture Score) CD/LP+MP3 (Sacred Bones)
Recording during lockdown at his studio in Edinburgh, Scotland, Blanck Mass’s Ben Power was in the perfect setting for a musical piece intended to capture the isolation central to serial mail bomber Ted Kaczynski’s story. Power was also working with a director in a time zone 10 hours behind and thus many sessions required working in the middle of the night, which added a fitting intensity to the composition process. [A limited-edition red color vinyl pressing is available.]

Deathwhite – Grey Everlasting CD/LP (Season Of Mist)
2022 marks the tenth year of Deathwhite. The ensuing years have borne witness to the continued, if not expedited unraveling of humankind and the world in which it so harshly occupies. The 2020 global pandemic – an event of unimaginable magnitude – has amplified the worst in us. Cruelty, dishonesty, greed, obfuscation, and selfishness are celebrated, worn as a badge of pride as the world burns figuratively and literally. Such was the environment of discontent and isolation that the enigmatic dark metal quartet concocted it’s third full-length studio offering, Grey Everlasting.
Dopplereffekt – Neurotelepathy CD/2xLP (Leisure System)
With their second LP and fifth release in total on Leisure System, the duo of Rudolf Klorzeiger and To-Nhan have themselves achieved a near-telepathic capacity for collaborative thought and mechanical construction. They continue to use live appearances to present experimental trials of theoretical models, and that effort is heard in the sizzle and swing of the percussive highlights here, programmed with a serious depth and wriggle that reflect both an extension of and return to form.
Dragged Under – Upright Animals CD/LP (Mascot)
When you strip everything else away, we rely on our animal instincts to survive. In the face of danger, we either flee or fight without hesitation. No matter how many perceived differences exist between us, we breathe the same air, drink the same water, and eat the same way to subsist. Dragged Under naturally harness this primal power in their hard-hitting hybrid of punk, rock, metal, and hardcore. Choosing to progress, the Seattle quintet sharpen their claws, teeth, and style on their second full-length album, Upright Animals. [A translucent orange color vinyl pressing is available.]
Baxter Dury – Mr Maserati 2001 – 2021 CD (Heavenly)
Following Baxter Dury’s autobiography release, Chaise Longue, Heavenly Recordings releases Mr Maserati 2001 – 2021, a best of compilation. Two decades and six albums of Baxter Dury’s louche sardonic music featuring late-night London snapshots, shuffling basslines, comedown disco tunes, seedy bleakness and sweet love for humanity are collected. This set also includes a new song, “D.O.A.”, which was co-written with his son Kosmo and which gives a gorgeous glimpse of what Baxter might get up to in the next decade or two. “I don’t really think I warrant a ‘best of’ album,” says Dury, but he’s quietly built a back catalogue of absolute beauties. [Vinyl edition due June 24.]

His music dares to imagine a future of new standards and sonic excitement.

The Sun Ra Arkestra Meets Salah Ragab Plus The Cairo Jazz Band – In Egypt [Reissue/1983] CD/LP (Strut)

David Sylvian – Sleepwalkers CD/2xLP (Groenland)
In the ‘00s, David Sylvian produced two of his strongest and most solitary statements, Blemish and Manafon. But those records don’t tell the whole story. During that the same period, Sylvian created an alternate body of work: a series of collaborations and side projects with leading talents of pop and improv, electronic and contemporary classical music. The best of these recordings are gathered here on Sleepwalkers, meticulously sequenced and remixed: the fruits of one-off meetings and lifelong partnerships, they jump from bliss to intrigue, romance to sensuality, as arch experiments lead into the lushest pop.

Vieux Farka Touré – Les Racines CD/LP (World Circuit)

He has also released audacious collaborations with the likes of Dave Matthews and jazz guitarist John Scofield, and albums with American singer-songwriter Julia Easterlin and Israeli singer-songwriter Idan Raichel.

Bernard Allison – Highs & Lows LP (Ruf)
Released earlier this year on CD – now available on vinyl. There’s nothing like the sound of a world-class bluesman getting back to business. Last October, when Bernard Allison returned to his old haunt of Bessie Blue Studios, Tennessee, to be greeted by fabled producer and career-long collaborator Jim Gaines, it felt like coming home. And when Allison fired up the amps, counted in the band and embarked upon his latest studio album, Highs & Lows, everything felt right with the world.

American Football – Rare Symmetry b/w Fade Into You 10”+MP3 (Polyvinyl)
‘Seaglass’ color vinyl. After quietly releasing their self-titled debut album in 1999 while still in college, American Football disbanded after the album’s release to focus on other projects, only to reunite 15 years later to a fanbase that had been consistently growing throughout the underground / emo scene. The album later appeared on Rolling Stone’s “40 Greatest Emo Albums of All Time” list at #6, with Pitchfork giving its deluxe reissue the “Best New Reissue” title, calling it the “most influential album in the genre.” The reunion was followed by two more self-titled full-length albums (LP2 and LP3), collaborations with the likes of Paramore’s Hayley Williams, San Holo, boyband and others, as well as numerous sold-out world tours. On the Rare Symmetry / Fade Into You 10″ single, American Football (Mike Kinsella, Nate Kinsella, Steve Holmes) expand on the dense beauty of LP3 with “Rare Symmetry”, incorporating chiming vibraphones, intricate picking patterns, and devastating lyrics. The B-side is a cover of the Mazzy Star classic “Fade Into You”.
Anathema – The Silent Enigma [Reissue/1995] LP (Peaceville)
The Silent Enigma, Anathema’s second studio album, was originally released in the summer of ’95 and was the first release on which guitarist Vincent Cavanagh took over the vocal duties of the departed Darren White. Where Darren’s vocals were guttural, Vincent’s style pushed the possibilities for Anathema onwards and upwards, with a scope and breadth beyond his years, complimenting an ethereal roller-coaster of thoughtful atmospherics and crushing Celtic Frost style riffs – the Swiss legends being a notable inspiration. What emerged was a fine example of highly atmospheric and often emotional gothic doom, spawning classic Anathema songs such as “Restless Oblivion”, “Sunset of Age”, “The Silent Enigma” and “A Dying Wish”.
Anathema – A Vision Of A Dying Embrace [Reissue/1997] LP (Peaceville)
A Vision Of A Dying Embrace contains a night of spellbinding doom metal from Anathema’s live show in Krakow, Poland, in 1996. Whilst still reasonably early in the career of the band and with rhythm guitarist Vincent Cavanagh taking on vocal duties only relatively recently for the sublime “The Silent Enigma” opus, the set contained a whole selection of now-established classics from Anathema’s first two studio albums and Pentecost III EP, with epics like “A Dying Wish,” “Sleepless” and “Mine is Yours” captured in their purest and rawest form in the live setting. Available on vinyl for the first time with printed inner sleeve.
Anatolian Weapons – Selected Acid Tracks LP (Byrd Out)
This is a deliberately dancefloor-oriented release, with a host of long (long) acid laced tracks designed for the club, and some more unconventional surprises. The titles offer a subtle nod to a recently passed DJ par excellence and general polymath, whom Aggelos credits as an inspiration.
As It Is – I Went To Hell And Back LP (Fearless)
Released in February on CD – now available on pink color vinyl. Inspired by the iconic emo bands of the early 2000s, As It Is release I Went To Hell And Back. The song “I Miss 2003” contains lyrics from scene favorites like My Chemical Romance, Mayday Parade, The All-American Rejects – and callbacks to bands like New Found Glory and Good Charlotte. The track offers a nostalgic, upbeat break from the rest of the heavy (and at times bleak) theme of the album.
Atlin Gun – Yol LP (ATO)
Recently released on CD – now available on limited gold, as well as an indie store exclusive purple – color vinyl. Amsterdam’s Altin Gun has built a strong reputation for fusing past and present to make brilliantly catchy, upbeat pop music, as seen with their Grammy-nominated second album, Gece. Yol, their third album in as many years, continues that trend while unveiling several sonic surprises in their continued exploration of Anatolian rock and Turkish psych-folk.

Tommy Bolin – Energy II LP (Friday Rights MGMT)
Limited 180gmorange color vinyl pressing. Tommy Bolin was the quintessential guitar prodigy who focused his talents within the burgeoning rock/metal scenes of the early ‘70s as well as mastered a highly lauded jazz fusion technique catching the attention of rock tastemakers and guitar legend peers. It was just a matter of time before Bolin was making a name for himself playing on projects as diverse as Billy Cobham’s Spectrum project, replacing Joe Walsh in the James Gang, playing session work on seminal fusion projects by Moxy and Alphonse Mouzon, to replacing Ritchie Blackmore in Deep Purple. Energy II is a previously unreleased album from Bolin’s early days with his could-have-been-mega-band Energy.
Steve Dawson – Gone, Long Gone LP (Black Hen)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Steve Dawson has always been hard to pin down. A guitarist, a composer, a sought-after musical enabler, and sideman? Of course, he’s all those things and more, but none of those descriptions really do the seven-time Juno Award-winning musician justice. Since moving to Nashville in 2013, it’s been full tilt for the Vancouver native. Gone, Long Gone reflects Dawson’s mastery of songcraft and features brilliant instrumental performances from some of the finest players in roots music.

Pan Daijing – Tissues 2xLP (PAN)
Red color vinyl pressing. Pan Daijing’s exhibition-performance Tissues premiered in the Tanks at the Tate Modern in autumn 2019. A five-part immersion in performance, sound, movement, space, and most of all emotion in its most distilled and conflicted states, Tissues engaged with the conventions of opera and tragedy to present a searing representation of the embattled human psyche in space and time. While the ambitious multi-sensory artwork made use of the range of Daijing’s artistic capabilities, music, particularly the voice, was at its formal and emotional core. This vinyl edition serves as a record of that work, in the form of an hour-long, studio-recorded audio excerpt: an invaluable archival document from Daijing’s practice.
Deserta – Every Moment, Everything You Need LP (Felte)
Recently release on CD – now available on blue color vinyl. For Matthew Doty, Deserta has always been about exploring a sonic universe that allows him to express a kaleidoscope of emotions, without having to say much at all. Through a patchwork of reverb-tinged textures – drone guitars, lingering synths and driving percussion – the Los Angeles-based singer/songwriter and multi-instrumentalist weaves together stories of care, frustration and catharsis that ultimately stretch to a gentle resolve. On new album Every Moment, Everything You Need, Doty chronicles the kind of year we all fear, full of uncertainty, tension, and sustained pressure, and transforms it into a celebration of perseverance. It’s an essential reminder that we have the power to shape the stories we tell.

Julius Eastman – Stay On It LP (Week-End)
It has power, is unpredictable, bringing together familiar things before disbanding them again. It reshuffles the deck: Stay On It by Julius Eastman (1940-1990). In 1973, avant-garde ensemble Creative Associates goes on a tour of Europe with Eastman’s brand-new piece in their repertoire, and in short: Stay On It turns the coordinates of avant-garde music on its head. It is minimal, but unashamedly groovy; it is open to improvisation, grants performers all the freedom they could need, but it isn’t jazz and never slips into the non-committal. It is open to theatrical and performative elements, but also to the poetic and lyrical. It is strict and demands maximum concentration from its performers but releases them into playfulness.
Faxed Head – Exhumed At Birth [Reissue/1997] LP (Drag City/Million Dollar Performances)
The sounds of punk are found twenty years down the line morphing into metal in the arid confines of Coalinga CA on Faxed Head’s deathless LP debut, Exhumed At Birth. This conceptual rumination on the US’s dead-end teenage culture featured a dream team of SF underground standouts, perfectly capturing and transcending the horror-sounds of the youth movement with equal amounts of visceral rage and tongue-in-cheek humor.

The Gathering – Always… [Reissue/1992] LP (Peaceville)
The Gathering is a Dutch alternative rock band founded in 1989 by brothers Hansand & René Rutten with vocalist Bart Smits. The early incarnation of the band featured a much more death and doom metal-based style than the more atmospheric rock and experimental music they became known for over the years, having enjoyed a highly successful career globally over a 20-year period. The band recorded two demos initially before making their studio debut with Always… Originally released in 1992, it is a prime example of classic atmospheric death/doom metal with brutal vocals and slow funereal riffing influenced by bands such as Celtic Frost, as well as the implementation of keyboards to accentuate the dark ambience.
God Forbid – Gone Forever [Reissue/2004] LP (M-Theory)
Limited blue color vinyl pressing of the 2004 breakthrough release from God Forbid. The band was a major player within the New Wave of American Heavy Metal movement of the early ’00s. The group logged many miles on the road touring alongside legacy acts such as Slayer and Anthrax, as well as scene contemporaries such as Machine Head, Lamb Of God, Killswitch Engage, and Hatebreed.
Go Sailor – Go Sailor [Reissue/2011] LP+MP3 (Slumberland)
Limited blue color vinyl pressing. Go Sailor was a great, short-lived band from the mid- ‘90s who represent a key link in the US indie music chain. Featuring Rose Melberg (Tiger Trap, The Softies, Gaze, Brave Irene, Knife Pleats), Linton (Henry’s Dress, The Aislers Set) and Paul Curran (Take A Day fanzine, Crimpshrine, Monsula), they released three great singles and a few compilation tracks, and then went their separate ways. Basic and lovely in their songwriting, they’ve perfected snapshots of where indie-pop was during that last burst of pre-internet indie activity. This album compiles all three of their 7″ singles for Slumberland, Yoyo and Lookout!, and compilation tracks, and was first released on vinyl in 2011.
Laura Jane Grace – At War With The Silverfish 10”+MP3 (Polyvinyl)
Clear vinyl pressing. Half recorded at Grace’s TinyQuietStudio in Chicago and half recorded at Electric Eel in St. Louis, and mixed by her Devouring Mothers bandmate Marc Hudson, At War With The Silverfish finds Grace in a range of stripped-back, poignant modes that amount to an honest and holistic account of our shared humanity. Unafraid to spotlight open wounds and tangled feelings, Grace conveys the distinctive pluck that has defined her work with Against Me! and The Devouring Mothers, but with the intimate energy of home recording with an acoustic guitar. The album is not a clarion call, but a tender invitation. It is a necessary capsule of a woman’s artistic pulse; love, longing and loneliness told in affecting turns of phrase.
Grateful Dead – The Very Best Of Grateful Dead [Reissue/2003] 2xLP (Friday Music)
In 2003, Warner Records compiled an amazing compact disc overview of The Grateful Dead’s most memorable and fan driven favorites. Their best loved songs from Workingman’s Dead and American Beauty are featured with tracks like “Casey Jones”, “Uncle John’s Band”, “Truckin'” and “Sugar Magnolia”. Plus, even more Dead anthems from their own label are included like “The Music Never Stopped”, “Eyes Of The World” and “U.S. Blues”, most featuring the memorable lyrics of Robert Hunter. Through the years, they have found and fine-tuned their own sonic brand, somewhere at the crossroads between Type O Negative, Alice In Chains and Sisters Of Mercy, to name a few, mixed with a certain street credibility connected to the group’s roots in hardcore, and even tinges of shoegaze. ‘Cold doom’ as the band likes to call it.

Ndikho Xaba & The Natives – Ndikho Xaba & The Natives [Reissue/1971] LP (Mississippi)
Ndikho Xaba left South Africa in 1964, an exile from his homeland who eventually found a home in San Francisco’s vibrant spiritual jazz scene of the late 60s. A songwriter, bandleader, pianist, and inventor of percussion and woodwind instruments, Xaba played alongside contemporaries like Pharoah Sanders, Alice Coltrane, and Sun Ra. But it was on the single album he recorded in the US, released in an edition of just 500 copies in 1971, that Xaba realized his unique vision. Backed by a band that included Plunky Branch and Lon Moshe (Oneness Of Juju and Black Fire label), Xaba bridged the Black Atlantic, connecting the music of Africa with the most brilliant lights of the Diaspora, and drawing a line between the Black Power movement of the US and the struggle against apartheid in South Africa. Across five songs, Xaba and the band move through spiritual invocations, wrenching soul, and dizzying layers of rhythm knocked out on homemade instruments.
