Gary Clark Jr. – JPEG RAW CD/LP (WB)

Gary Clark Jr.’s new album JPEG RAW, his fourth studio release, marks a grand step in his musical evolution. While retaining the deep and true resonance of his blues foundations and guitar virtuosity with subtlety yet conviction, he reaches well beyond this time. The emphasis here is on song and studio craft without losing the rawness of his young legend. The music is dense and adventurous with a more cohesive synthesis of his eclectic musical palette. Hip samples, Thelonious Monk and Sonny Boy Williamson decorate flourishes of African, world music, even jazz while merging with blues, rock, R&B, and rap; familiar areas he has ventured before, this time with more unity forging a fresh new style. Sam Evian – Plunge CD/LP (Flying Cloud Recordings)

Plunge is Sam Evian’s fourth studio album and the debut on his new imprint Flying Cloud Recordings. Joined by his closest friends and collaborators (including Liam Kazar, Sean Mullins, El Kempner of Palehound and Adrianne Lenker of Big Thief), the album was tracked live to tape in the early winter months of 2023 over a 10-day period at his quaint Flying Cloud Recording studio tucked away in the Catskills Mountains. With a wide-open recording approach, the result is Evian’s best album to date: a cathartic rock record that melds power pop, iridescent guitar, raucous psychedelia, and Sam’s now sought-after grooves. The music is both fresh and familiar, sonically inspired by his penchant for early ‘70s production and creatively propelled by the free-spirited process depicted in the Beatles documentary Get Back. Sierra Ferrell – Trail Of Flowers CD/LP (Rounder)

One of the brightest young luminaries in roots music today, Sierra Ferrell brings a dose of beautifully strange magic to everything she touches. Fletcher returns with sophomore album, In Search Of The Antidote, detailing the journey of finding the antidote in life and the many forms it can take. Through singles like “Eras Of Us”, “Lead Me On” and more, Fletcher shares the different realizations, ego deaths, personal rebirths and more, that encompass what it means to be on a true soul search. She shows both the beauty and brutality of what it means to be a human being on an ever-evolving quest back to one’s own heart. Good Morning – Good Morning CD/2xLP+MP3 (Polyvinyl)

After signing with Polyvinyl in 2021 and releasing the critically acclaimed album Barnyard (as well as the two double singles “Mollyduker / Keep It & Out to Pasture / Misery”), Australian duo Good Morning return with their aptly titled seventh album, Good Morning Seven. On Good Morning Seven, Stefan Blair and Liam Parsons share some of their most beautifully complex and ambitious work to date – a double album that invites the listener into a world of unwavering tonal depth and sonic masterpieces. The Jesus And Mary Chain – Glasgow Eyes CD/LP/2xLP (Cooking Vinyl)

Marking 40 years of The Jesus And Mary Chain, Glasgow Eyes was recorded at Mogwai’s Castle of Doom studio in Glasgow, where Jim and William continued the creative process that resulted in their previous album, 2017’s Damage And Joy, becoming their highest charting album in over 20 years. What emerged is a record that finds one of the UK’s most influential groups embracing a productive second chapter, their maelstrom of melody, feedback and controlled chaos now informed more audibly by their love for Suicide and Kraftwerk and a fresh appreciation of the less disciplined attitudes found in jazz. Cody Jinks is a ground-breaking independent artist and one of music’s most prolific and beloved musicians. Bright Future marks Lenker’s first album since 2020’s Songs And Instrumentals, and features co-production from Philip Weinrobe, alongside contributions from Nick Hakim, Mat Davidson, and Josefin Runsteen. On Bright Future, Adrianne Lenker, a songwriter known for turns of phrase and currents of rhyme, says it plainly, “You have my heart // I want it back.” Documented with analogue precision, what began as an experiment in collaboration, became proof Adrianne’s heart did return, full to the brim, daring her into the unknown. Admirers of Adrianne’s solo music and Big Thief will find on Bright Future her reliable talent captured in stunning, magnetic clarity. In the company of parlor instruments, Adrianne’s modern melodic and lyrical inventions create new traditions. Her vocal flights at times outwit gravity, then land, guiding along an earthly path. Junior Marvin – Happy Family CD (Flatiron)

Junior Marvin is widely recognized as an all-time great reggae musician and musical director and guitarist of Bob Marley’s iconic band, The Wailers. Junior’s new album, Happy Family, conincides with the theatrical release of One Love, the Bob Marley Paramount biopic feature film. In the film, the role of Junior is played by his real-life son, Davo, who is also a musical artist. The first single from Happy Family is Junior’s new recording of “One Love”. Junior Marvin was born in Jamaica and grew up in London and met the late Tuff Gong icon on Valentine’s Day in 1977 (ironically the same day the film will be released) who touted him as the “young Jimi Hendrix of London”. Marley immediately asked Junior to join his band as lead guitarist and became one of Marley’s closest friends and influencers up until his death. [Vinyl version due April 12.]

Aoife O’Donovan – All My Friends CD/LP (Yep Roc)
The follow-up to Aoife O’Donovan’s 3x Grammy nominated album, Age Of Apathy, All My Friends is based around a collection of songs Aoife wrote, inspired by women’s suffrage and the passage of the 19th amendment. The music is expansive with orchestral arrangements, choral vocals and a variety of instruments that create a sonic soundscape beyond anything Aoife has done in the past. Special guests include Anaïs Mitchell, Sierra Hull, The Westerlies, The Knights, and the San Francisco Girls Choir. Sylvaine – Eg Er Framand CD/LP (Season Of Mist)

A strong duality between worlds. A balance between the beautiful and the harsh, light and darkness, serenity and chaos, the outside world, and the inner realm; a juxtaposition between our human life and the spiritual origins. Norwegian multi-instrumentalist Sylvaine’s music deals with the extreme range of emotions human existence has to offer, as a result of existing in this world as a being not from here. In constant conflict with oneself and struggling to adapt to this place we call our own, Eg Er Framand serves as an emotional catharsis for the artist, revealing the eternal longing for something else residing within its melodies.

Waxahatchee – Tigers Blood CD/LP (ANTI-)

One of the hardest working singer-songwriters in the game is named Katie Crutchfield. She was born in Alabama, grew up near Waxahatchee Creek. Skipped town and struck out on her own as Waxahatchee. That was over a decade ago. Crutchfield says she never knew the road would lead her here, but after six critically acclaimed albums, she’s never felt more confident in herself as an artist. While her sound has evolved from lo-fi folk to lush alt-tinged country, her voice has always remained the same. Honest and close, poetic with Southern lilting. Much like Carson McCullers’s Mick Kelly, determined in her desires and convictions, ready to tell whoever will listen. And after years of being sober and stable in Kansas City-after years of sacrificing herself to her work and the road-Crutchfield has arrived at her most potent songwriting yet. On her new album, Tigers Blood, Crutchfield emerges as a powerhouse-an ethnologist of the self-forever dedicated to revisiting her wins and losses. Zombi – Direct Inject CD/LP (Relapse)

Zombi make their long-awaited return with their new album, Direct Inject. Capturing the spirit of previous albums like Escape Velocity and Surface To Air, while expanding the band’s sonic palette into territory, ranging from ‘80s synth rock (“Direct Inject”) to saxophone-heavy slow jams (“Sessuale II”). Direct Inject is essential Zombi, and quite possibly their most diverse and engaging record yet. Breezy strumming washes over a steady beat punctuated by the wail of slide guitar as the lyrics paint an idyllic picture of picking up, leaving your old life behind, and embracing the future with eyes wide and hearts open. Alice Coltrane – The Carnegie Hall Concert 2xCD/2xLP (Impulse!)

Alice Coltrane’s The Carnegie Hall Concert is a previously unreleased recording of a historic 1971 concert. The original multi-track recording was commissioned by Impulse but wasn’t released at the time. Features an all-star group including Pharoah Sanders, Archie Shepp, Jimmy Garrison, Cecil McBee, Ed Blackwell, and others. This was a triple bill placing her in the company of Laura Nyro and The Rascals. Concert produced by Sid Bernstein, who promoted the first Beatles concert in the US.

The Cure – Paris [Reissue/1993] CD/2xLP (Elektra)

The Cure’s 30th anniversary re-issue of Paris has now been expanded with the addition of two previously unreleased live tracks “Shake Dog Shake” and “Hot Hot Hot!!!”. Paris was recorded at Le Zenith de Paris in October 1992: Released October 1993. Includes the singles “Lovesong”, “Catch”, “A Letter To Elise”, “Charlotte Sometimes”, “Close To Me” and fan favorite “Play For Today”. Remastered by Robert Smith and Miles Showell at Abbey Road Studios, London.

Six years have passed since Swiss-based duo Klaus Johann Grobe’s last long player Du Bist So Symmetrisch (2018) and you’ll hear they’ve come a long way. Io Tu Il Loro was written over two weeks in a cabin at the very end of a remote Swiss valley, where – pretty much at the same place Klaus Johann Grobe came up with their whole debut full-length I’m Sinne der Zeit in 2014.

Odetta Hartman – Swansongs CD/LP (Transgressive)

New York singer-songwriter Odetta Hartman’s 2015 debut mini-LP 222 and 2018’s Old Rockhounds Never Die, saw her touring her unique performance style – part Jack White rock and roll folk blues, part electronic experimentations – with the likes of Let’s Eat Grandma, Cosmo Sheldrake and Skullcrusher. Odetta’s long-awaited second album, Swansongs, showcases her strongest set of songs to date.

Kaleida is the transatlantic duo whose darkly mystic soundworld finds glimmers of hope in the disquiet. Spanning an ocean, the pair have nurtured a long-distance partnership that withstands the shifting patterns of life. They first formed in 2013 when a friend introduced them over email. Christina Wood was working in the Indonesian forest while recording demos in her bedroom each night, and Cicely Goulder had been composing for film productions in London. Despite the miles between them, they found an instant musical chemistry.

Chaka Khan – Chaka [Reissue/1978] CD/LP (WB)

Chaka, the first solo release from icon and Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Member Chaka Khan, features her indelible hit, “I’m Every Woman” – an anthem for almost everyone at some stage. The 1978 album as well as a collection of tracks ranging from soul to funk to disco that showcase Chaka’s incredible range. Newly remastered for this release and coming on the heels of a banner year for Chaka Khan as she was recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and celebrated 50 years in the business.

Mute celebrates the 25th Anniversary Edition of Looper’s 1999 album, Up A Tree, featuring never-before-released songs. Initially released on Sub Pop, Up A Tree is the debut record by the Scottish lo-fi band led by Stuart David (co-founder and bass player of Belle and Sebastian) and his wife Karn David. This anniversary edition features alternative artwork designed by Karn and includes new sleeve notes by Jenny Hayo. The band attributes her as the catalyst starting Looper, as she initially approached Stuart. It also includes words from Stuart’s sister, Karla Black, whose degree show at the Glasgow School of Art saw Looper’s first-ever performance. Up A Tree is available on CD with a bonus disc of reworkings and remixes and as a limited edition transparent green vinyl with a bonus flexi disc, including an unreleased track titled “Brilliant Paper” by Ronnie Black, former member and guitarist of Looper, and Sue Tompkins, a British visual and sound artist based in Glasgow, previously in the indie rock band Life Without Buildings.

Christian McBride / Edgar Meyer – But Who’s Gonna Play The Melody? CD (Mack Avenue)

The meeting of great minds usually happens behind closed doors, but for two of the world’s foremost bassists – Christian McBride and Edgar Meyer – the collaboration proved so fruitful that a duo album exploring their collective backgrounds in jazz, folk, classical, bluegrass and funk was born. Sam Morrow – On The Ride Here CD/LP (Blue Élan

Sam Morrow has carved out a sound that exists somewhere outside of genre and geography. It’s his own version of modern-day American roots music: a mix of roadhouse rock & roll, bluesy R&B, and country-fried funky-tonk, driven forward by groove, grease, and guitars. On The Ride Here, Sam Morrow’s fifth studio album was produced by longtime collaborator Eric Corne, with an all-star roster of West Coast musicians – including bassist Ted Russell Kamp, keyboardist Sasha Smith, and drummers Matt Tecu and Butch Norton – adding primal punch and roughhewn Polish to the 11 songs.

Motörhead – Overkill [Reissue/1979] CD (Sanctuary)

Motörhead, the loudest band in the world, with the power and force of a hundred pneumatic drills they destroyed the nation over and again and no-one, repeat no-one, remained unaffected by them – everyone was torn limb from limb. The album ‘Overkill’ and was ten times more powerful than their first album ‘Motörhead’, which was a killer in itself.

Paper Tiger – All Over The Place CD/LP (Doomtree)

Paper Tiger’s All Over The Place is a moody record, but also muscular-with strong kick patterns, spare but catchy vocal sampling, and short songs that make their mark then make an exit. Paper Tiger has a long list of credits as a hip hop producer, but working solo allows his style room to maneuver; All Over the Place explores everything from slow, drumless ambient compositions to hard, dark dance music. There’s a unifying sensibility, though: the chord progressions lean melancholy, textured timbres feel a little like grainy film, and distinct song sections reveal his pop fluency.

Charlie Parr – Little Sun CD/LP (Smithsonian Folkways)

Over the last couple of decades, Charlie Parr has crisscrossed the world on tour more times than one can count. He also has released over a dozen albums of his songs, acclaimed for their poetic simplicity. Little Sun, his most ambitious album to date, was recorded with Tucker Martine (The Decemberists, Sufjan Stevens, My Morning Jacket) and features Parr augmenting his raw and affecting songs with stunning full-band arrangements. The remarkable backing band here includes Marisa Anderson, Victor Krummenacher, Andrew Borger, and Asher Fulero. Masterfully channeling the philosophical and transcendental qualities of the blues, Parr takes us on a journey through the winding streets of his imagination.

Markus Reuter & Stefano Casagna – Sea Of Hopeless Angels CD/LP (Unsung)

Rebounding from his furious and abrasive work with the free-rock improvisation quartet Anchor & Burden, leading polymath composer and touch guitarist Markus Reuter embraces a different and more celestial music in Sea Of Hopeless Angels, his entrancing duo collaboration with electronic producer/art-rock revivalist Stefano Castagna. In a free and sinuous narrative, Markus’ clean-toned and unedited touch guitar solos merge with Stefano’s instinctive counterpart work and sympathetic one-man orchestra. Evocative of the cinematic struggles of the Wim Wenders earthbound angels which partly inspired the recordings, Sea Of Hopeless Angels explores an understanding and acceptance of music as being both fundamental and stabilizing (while also being a grave and sometimes disruptive weight).

Martin Rev – Martin Rev [Reissue/1980] CD/LP (Bureau B)

Martin Rev’s eponymous debut solo record was released in 1980, not long after the second Suicide LP appeared. It is one of the most seminal albums to have emerged in the early years of electronic music. The tension between his hypnotic drum machine salvoes and Alan Vega’s irrepressibly expressive voice on stage or in the studio created an electrifying mix, and yet these six supremely minimal compositions were no less impactful without Vega’s voice.

Rosali – Bite Down CD/LP+MP3 (Merge)

Bite Down finds acclaimed songwriter and guitarist Rosali Middleman amid transition. Written after moving to North Carolina from her longtime home of Philadelphia, Bite Down is a searching, hungry record by an artist who is resolved to bite down on life, in all its horror and joy. She is joined here by Mowed Sound – David Nance (bass, guitar), James Schroeder (guitar, synth), Kevin Donahue (drums, percussion) – and in studio by Destroyer collaborator Ted Bois (keys). Praise Ye Jah is the third studio album by Jamaican reggae singer Sizzla. It was released on Xterminator on October 21, 1997. The songs were written by Sizzla and produced by Philip “Fatis” Burrell. X-terminator is a Jamaican dancehall label founded in 1987 and run by Philip “Fattis” Burrell. It was undoubtedly the most popular reggae label from 1995 to 1998 and is generally associated with the artists Luciano, Sizzla and Ini Kamoze.

Slimelord – Chytridiomycosis Relinquisted CD/LP (20 Buck Spin)

Slimelord, England’s most peculiar death metal oddity, have assembled from the subterranean depths a savage yet hallucinatory tale on their debut full length Chytridiomycosis Relinquished. Roughly a concept album about an alcoholic named Joker Bob who goes on a bender, someone dies, and Bob gets the chair (“the electrifying conclusion”). From the moment the needle drops, the listener is served notice that this isn’t going to be an easy listen, as an argument taped off of a TV cuts to a basement recording of a lone, blaring electric guitar with someone yelling over the top. Kaleidoscope – Tangerine Dream [Reissue/1967] LP (Survival Research)

London-based psychedelic folk quartet Kaleidoscope formed as the Sidekicks in 1964, changing their name to the Key the following year. By the time they signed Fontana for the 1967 debut album Tangerine Dream, their choral pop harmonies were stronger and the musicianship more accomplished, the distinctly English folk undercurrents more pronounced. A favorite of Spaceman 3 and other connoisseurs of neglected psych, originals of this rare gem now change hands at extortionate prices and the work has aged like a vintage wine, the unjustly overlooked classic now rightly feted.

The Mother Hips – When We Disappear LP (Blue Rose Music)

Gold colorway. Founded 30 years ago, The Mother Hips caught their first big break before they’d even finished college, when legendary producer Rick Rubin signed the band to his American Recordings label. In the decades to come, the group would go on to release ten critically acclaimed studio albums and cement themselves as architects of a new breed of California rock and soul, one equally informed by the breezy harmonies of the Beach Boys, the funky roots of The Band, and the psychedelic Americana of Buffalo Springfield.

On-Ly – Wonderlust LP (La Sape)

On-Ly is the solo and collaborative moniker of pianist and producer Joshua Smeltink. Spanning genres, On-Ly’s house and hip-hop history is ever-present and imbued with the hard-hitting post-bop jazz-rock of the ‘60s/’70s, harking back to bands such as Weather Report and Miles Davis Group. Reflecting on great leaders and great bands and what makes them essential, there is not too much more than On-Ly has considered for Wonderlust. As Bill Orcutt’s most mature and exhilarating LP to date, Music For Four Guitars is a slab of undeniable Apollonian beauty. It’s approachability and obvious novelty landed it not only on the year- end lists of every key-pushing codger in the underground in 2022, but also on NPR in the form of the Bill Orcutt Guitar Quartet, an ensemble assembled to perform this music and featuring Wendy Eisenberg, Ava Mendoza, and Shane Parish in addition to Orcutt. But while their Tiny Desk Concert gave a whiff of the quartet’s easy intimacy, the sterile confines of the virtual recital medium still left a puzzle unsolved: how might these brutally mannered bricks of minimalist counterpoint sound on a stage in front of actual breathing bodies?”

While You Are There is a re-interpretation of classic tunes from the esteemed jazz catalog of ECM Records, along with originals inspired by those songs. Rejoicer delved deep into ECM’s vast catalog, listening to hundreds of albums, and carefully selecting tracks to reinterpret. Collaborating with artists who are also friends from the label, he composed new music inspired by the sounds that have defined ECM’s legacy.

Sun Ra – Live In Roma 1980 3xLP (Holidays)

Recorded live at Teatro Giulio Cesare on March 28, 1980, comprising an astounding 27 compositions, including the highly celebrated “Astro Black”, “Mr. Mystery”, “Romance Of Two Planets”, “Space Is The Place”, “We Travel The Spaceways”, and “Calling Planet Earth” over six vinyl sides. High among the greatest live gigs by the Arkestra captured on tape, carefully mastered by Matt Bordin at Outside Inside Studio, Live in Rome 1980 is a near perfect snapshot of the band’s versatility and range and includes many of their most notably and famous songs.

For nearly a decade, Tycho has been known as the musical alias of Scott Hansen, but with the release of Awake – his second LP for Ghostly International – the solo project evolved into a three-piece band. Relating closer to post-rock than ambient soundscapes, the record is situated in the present, sounding more like Hansen than drawing from his influences. This is, in many ways, the first true Tycho record. Following 2011’s Dive LP, the San Francisco-based designer toured extensively, and with a full band on stage, his sound coalesced into a percussive, organic whole.

Late Night Tales reissues the classic and hard-to-find Late Night Tales: Jamiroquai, compiled by none other than Jay Kay himself. The 10th edition of what is now a classic series of compilations was originally released 20 years ago and hasn’t been available on vinyl for over 15 years. A blissful collection of soul, disco, jazz, rare groove, and funk, this collection is an electrifying journey through the aural influences of one of the UK’s most seminal jazz bands. Jay Kay showcases a wealth and breadth of inspiration that wouldn’t be amiss on the late-night dancefloors of the Loft (or Giant Steps, for that matter).

VR SEX – Hard Copy LP (Dais)

Following 2022’s Rough Dimension LP, Noel Skum – aka Andrew Clinco of Drab Majesty – made the radical leap of expanding his psychedelic post-punk vehicle VR SEX into a fully collaborative five-piece band. To christen the new group’s camaraderie, they booked a block of studio time in Glassell Park, swapped skeletal iPhone demos, and “did that classic thing of a band making the exact record they want without any interference.” Working 12-hour days, they banged out the basics in a week, then tracked the rest over a month, fine-tuning it with flourishes, FX, and amplifier experiments. Hard Copy is the result – 10 tracks of sneering psychedelic punk streaked with Chrome-damaged freak-outs and snotty power pop harmonies chronicling sex doll love affairs and glue-sniffing fatales. Wham! exploded onto the global stage with their first album Fantastic in 1983 and music was never the same again. Featuring the huge hits “Bad Boys”, “Wham! Rap (Enjoy What You Do)”, and “Club Tropicana”, the album debuted at #1 in the UK and sold millions of copies worldwide. Make It Big! is exactly what Wham! had done by the time they released their second album in 1984. Featuring the hit singles “Wake Me Up Before You Go-Go”, “Everything She Wants” “Freedom” and “Careless Whisper”, the album cemented their place as pop icons.

Wye Oak – Shriek + Variations 2xLP+MP3 (Merge)

Orange swirl colorway. In 2014, Wye Oak released Shriek. It was a necessary departure for Jenn Wasner and Andy Stack, who found themselves on uncertain ground after two years of constant touring for 2011’s Civilian, living on opposite ends of the country and trying to revitalize their creative partnership. Wasner set aside her guitar for a bass. Stack took on the band’s upper register, playing syncopated, meditative keyboard parts that interacted with Wasner’s voice. During that period, Wasner and Stack were introduced to composer William Brittelle, the Metropolis Ensemble, and the Brooklyn Youth Chorus. His orchestral reimaginings of five songs from Shriek (Shriek: Variations, if you will) are the centerpiece of this package, which serves not only to mark the tenth anniversary of a great album, but to demonstrate the richness of Wye Oak’s compositions.

ZA! & Perrate – Jolifnato LP (Lovemonk)

Jolifanto takes its name from the first verse of Karawane, a seminal Dadaist phonetic poem by Hugo Ball. When Ball first recited it in 1916 at the Cabaret Voltaire, both the author and the audience embraced a trance that left Ball exhausted, requiring assistance off the stage as the audience claimed the spotlight. Over a century later, by a series of fortuitous events, Jolifanto is also the title of an album featuring two powerful musical entities. Artists stemming from diverse backgrounds converge with a shared experimental spirit, curiosity, and passion for exploration in their music. Jolifanto is an unexpected explosion propelled by (poly)rhythm, expanding into seemingly distant territories under the influence of flamenco. The Dadaist spirit permeates the work, where a constant tension between the improvised and the meticulously planned is evident.
