The Black Keys – Delta Kream CD/2xLP (Nonesuch)
The Black Keys follow-up 2019’s Let’s Rock with their tenth studio album, Delta Kream. The record celebrates the band’s roots, featuring eleven Mississippi hill country blues standards that they have loved since they were teenagers, before they were a band, including songs by R.L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough, among others. The duo recorded Delta Kream at Auerbach’s Easy Eye Sound studio in Nashville; they were joined by musicians Kenny Brown and Eric Deaton, long-time members of the bands of blues legends including R. L. Burnside and Junior Kimbrough. The album takes its name from William Eggleston’s iconic Mississippi photograph that is on its cover. The full circle Delta Kream release is a fitting tribute to these architects of hill country blues and further recognition of their enduring contributions to American music. [A limited-edition indie store exclusive vinyl pressing is also available.]
The Chills – Scatterbrain CD/LP (Fire)
Scatterbrain is the new studio album from the Dunedin (NZ) songsmiths The Chills helmed by the enigmatic Martin Phillipps. The project’s seventh studio album overall is a glorious self-examination of Phillipps’ songwriting hot on the heels of Snowbound (2018) and the critically acclaimed movie The Chills: The Triumph And Tragedy Of Martin Phillipps a year later. Scatterbrain is a thought-provoking and evocative take from a man who has lived through good times and bad. A mature and honest reflection on life, destiny and the fate of our times delivered in beautiful melodies with Phillipps’ trademarked incisive turn of phrase. Viewed from the perspective of a man understanding his age and indeed his own mortality, the new album takes a mature look at matters arising with a side order of perspective. [A limited-edition indie store exclusive color vinyl pressing is also available.]
Riley Downing – Start It Over CD/LP (New West)
Riley Downing (The Deslondes) sat down one day and decided he wanted to record a song or two for a simple 45rpm vinyl release. The Deslondes had been on a hiatus for a while and Downing had the creative itch to put something down on record. He had been in contact with his bandmate, John James Tourville, and they decided to work on a split 7″ with a friend. The recording session felt like a breath of fresh air and the communion of talented musicians produced more songs than expected. Downing left the session energized and continued to record and trade demo’s with Tourville. Downing and Tourville decided that there were enough ideas to make an album. Start It Over is the result of that creative effort. An album where each song was crafted with a different idea in mind. Some of the songs are more nostalgic than others and some were just written for good ol’ fashion fun. [A limited-edition ‘sea glass’ and turquoise color vinyl pressing is also available.]
The Go-Go’s – God Bless The Go-Go’s [Reissue/2001] CD/LP (Eagle)
Originally released in 2001, God Bless The Go-Go’s is the band’s fourth album and was their first record of brand new material since 1984’s Talk Show. Produced by Sean Slade and Paul Kolderie (Mighty Mighty Bosstones, Radiohead, Hole, etc.), this 13-track album finds a more mature group that is on an obvious mission to continue to write new classics into the 21st Century. Guests include Green Day’s Billie Joe Armstrong on the single “Unforgiven”, Rame Jaffee (The Wallflowers and Foo Fighters) on “Here You Are”, as well as Roger Manning (Jellyfish. Imperial Drag and The Moog Cookbook) on the track “Daisy Chain”. Upon its original release, it was hailed by Uncut magazine for its “sheer, punchy exuberance” while Billboard was impressed with its “deliriously buoyant, unadulterated adult-made pop.” Expanded with two bonus tracks. [A limited-edition blue color vinyl pressing is also available.]
Juliana Hatfield – Blood CD/LP+MP3 (American Laundromat)
Blood is Juliana Hatfield’s 19th solo studio album of originals, and a deep dive into the dark side. The album is a brutal and critical look at modern human psychology and behavior, at personal and societal sickness. “I think these songs are a reaction to how seriously and negatively a lot of people have been affected by the past four years,” says Juliana. “But it’s fun, musically. There’s a lot of playing around. I didn’t really have a plan when I started this project.” “Chunks” and “Had A Dream” are gritty and abrasive while “Mouthful Of Blood” and “Gorgon” are groovy and ultra-melodic. All of it is eminently hummable and thought-provoking. Sophisticated but catchy. Challenging but danceable. “I always love coming up with melodies and then trying to fit words into them-it’s like doing a puzzle,” says Juliana. “And I always find places to use the Mellotron flutes and strings, on every album, because those sounds are so beautiful to me. They are a nice counterpoint to the damaged lyrical content.” [A limited-edition indie store exclusive vinyl pressing is also available.]
Steve Goodman – It Sure Looked Good On Paper: The Steve Goodman Demos CD/2xLP (Omnivore)
It Sure Looked Good On Paper: The Steve Goodman Demos presents an unparalleled look into Goodman’s two decade career from a songwriting and an ‘in the studio’ perspective, before the world lost him far too young. Luckily, the recordings of his thoughts and works in progress live on. From demos of the now classic “City Of New Orleans” and “You Never Even Call Me By My Name”, to early versions of “The Auctioneer”, written by Leroy Van Dyke and Buddy Black and the traditional, “The Water Is Wide”, this collection finds Goodman artistically exploring. Also included are tracks written for film projects including “Face On The Cutting Room Floor” – written for the Steve Martin comedy Dead Men Don’t Wear Plaid, co-penned with the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band’s Jimmy Ibbotson, and later covered by that band, and “Six Pack”, written for inclusion on the soundtrack for the 1980 Kurt Russell movie, Used Cars. Neither film submission made it to the final feature, but it’s enticing to imagine a Kenny Rogers version of “Six Pack”, as it was Rogers for whom this demo was intended.
The Steel Woods – All Of Your Stones CD/LP (Wood Music)
The Steel Woods co-founder and leading light Jason “Rowdy” Cope passed away unexpectedly in his sleep on January 16, 2021. The cause has yet to be determined. The autobiographical title track, written by Cope, lead singer Wes Bayliss and Jamey Johnson, is an inspirational song about harnessing negativity and creating something positive with it. The 42-year-old guitarist/songwriter/producer was loved by many. His superb playing can be heard on albums by such artists as The Secret Sisters, Lindi Ortega, The Oak Ridge Boys and Jamey Johnson, who he played with for nine years. The surviving members of The Steel Woods – Bayliss, bassist Johnny Stanton and drummer Isaac Senty – and Cope’s family made the difficult decision to move forward with the band and release the album. Everyone who knew Cope knows that it is exactly what he would have wanted.
St. Vincent – Daddy’s Home CD/LP/Cassette (Loma Vista)
Daddy’s Home, the sixth album from St. Vincent, is the latest facet of an ever-evolving artist regarded by many as the most consistently innovative and intriguing presence in modern music. Warm Wurlitzers and wit, glistening guitars and grit, with sleaze and style for days. Taking you from uptown to downtown with the artist who makes you expect the unexpected. “Daddy’s Home collects stories of being down and out in downtown NYC,” Clark notes. “Last night’s heels on the morning train. Glamour that’s been up for three days straight.” The album was first teased in late 2020 when Clark completed an interview with Mojo. “I felt I had gone as far as I could possibly go with angularity,” she said of the album’s creation process, which she mentioned represents a “tectonic shift.” She continued with: “I was interested in going back to the music I’ve listened to more than any other – Stevie Wonder records from the early ‘70s, Sly And The Family Stone. I studied at the feet of those masters.” [A limited-edition indie store exclusive vinyl pressing is also available.]
CDs + Vinyl:

Armand Hammer & The Alchemist – Haram CD/2xLP (Backwoodz Studioz)
Haram is a mercurial collaboration between incendiary rap duo Armand Hammer, and living legend The Alchemist. With their unmatched penchant for stirring imagery and incisive storytelling, the two rappers dive into an ocean of Alchemist’s creation: warmly inviting on the surface, black and bone-crushingly cold at depth. Haram is a collection of the profane and the pure; a reminder that that which is forbidden is also sacrosanct. [A limited blue color vinyl pressing is also available.]
Balmorhea – Wind CD/2xLP (Deutsche Grammophon)
Copious creative influences run through Balmorhea’s Deutsche Grammophon debut album. The Wind comprises a dozen tracks inspired by meditations on the natural world and its fragility, an ancient tale of a saint who carried the wind to an airless French valley, and thoughts of climate activist Greta Thunberg crossing the Atlantic on the catamaran La Vagabonde.
Benny The Butcher – The Plugs I Met 2 CDEP (Next)
Acting as the sequel to Benny’s June 2019 EP The Plugs I Met, The Plugs I Met 2 continues the theme of using visuals from the 1983 crime film Scarface and, this time around, is entirely produced by Harry Fraud.
Nik Bartsch – Entendre CD (ECM)
The new solo album from the Swiss pianist, composer and conceptualist best known as leader of the bands Ronin and Mobile, Entendre offers deeper insight into Nik Bartch’s musical thinking. As the album title implies Entendre is about hearing as a creative process, referencing the patient unfolding of Bartch’s modular polymetric pieces, with alertness to the dynamics of touch, finding freedom in aesthetic restriction, serving the flow of each piece’s development while also taking the music to new places. [Vinyl edition due June 25.]
The Black Keys – Delta Kream CD/2xLP (Nonesuch)

The Coral – Coral Island CD/2xLP (Run On)
The wheels rattle into the thrilling unknown on The Coral’s first new music since 2018, finding the unsurpassed, metamorphic gonzo-pop five-piece in the company of crooks, sell-by-date candyfloss and plastic skeletons. Single “Faceless Angel” precedes a new and vividly evocative body of work from the legendary Merseyside band in the form of their tenth and first, ever double-album: Coral Island.
Bob Corritore & Friends – Spider In My Stew CD (Southwest Musical Arts Foundation)
Harmonica Ace Bob Corritore throws some wild blues parties, and you are invited to enjoy his latest. Spider In My Stew continues Bob’s musical adventures with a fresh batch of 14 new selections featuring some of the greatest artists in the blues today.
Current Joys – Voyager CD/LP+MP3 (Secretly Canadian)
Voyager, the seventh LP from Current Joys, rattles with the live-wire feeling that’s thrummed through all of Rattigan’s previous releases: quavering, scream-itself- hoarse vocals and self-interrogation via song. But here, that bristling, sentimental rock ‘n’ roll cacophony is overlaid with a soundtrack orchestra guiding it along. It’s an odyssey, a grand-sounding journey of self-discovery spread across sixteen tracks. Part ekphrasis, part personal, it’s Rattigan learning new ways to understand his own feelings and identity while inspired by the highly stylized, striking storytelling of filmmakers like Alfred Hitchcock, Terrence Malick, Agnès Varda, and Andrei Tarkovsky.
Danish String Quartet – Prism III CD (ECM)
Prism III shows how the radiance of Bach’s fugues is refracted through Beethoven’s quartets to illuminate the work of later composers. Beethoven had taken a fundamentally linear development from Bach, the Danes note, and exploded everything into myriads of different colors, directions and opportunities – much in the same way as a prism splits a beam of light.
Miles Davis With John Coltrane And Sonny Stitt – In Stockholm 1960 Complete [Reissue/1992] 4xCD (Dragon)
Legendary rare live recordings from Miles Davis’ Kind Of Blue era.
DDG x OG Parker – Die 4 Respect CD (Epic)

Deep Dark Woods – Changing Faces CD (Six Shooter)
On Changing Faces, The Deep Dark Woods are an Atlantic folk revivalist collective. Ryan Boldt’s delicate melodies and metallic-stringed bite rattle centuries-old folkloric ghosts and personal demons alike. The Deep Dark Woods, a band with few fixed members, is a vessel for Boldt, keyboard wonder Geoff Hilhorst and frequent collaborators, Kacy & Clayton and Evan Cheadle, among others, to find their own vocabulary for translating traditional folk forms – Irish waltzes, Broadside Ballads, ominous lullabies – to contemporary electric terms. [Vinyl edition due July 2.]
Dordeduh – Har CD/LP (Prophecy)
With their sophomore full-length, Har, Romania’s Dordeduh have created a rare and unique metal record that defies easy categorisation, pushes boundaries, and offers something new and previously unheard. Guitarists and founders Edmond Hupogrammos Karban and Sol Faur aka Cristian Popescu were expected to deliver an album oscillating in the musical space between dark folk and black metal. And, while they did indeed draw from those sources, they also fearlessly incorporated electronic, gothic, rock, psychedelic, prog, and even pop elements without prejudice. [A limited-edition gold color vinyl pressing is also available.]
Riley Downing – Start It Over CD/LP (New West)
Riley Downing (The Deslondes) sat down one day and decided he wanted to record a song or two for a simple 45rpm vinyl release. Mark Fry – Dreaming With Alice [Reissue/1972] CD/2xLP+CD (Now Again)
Mark Fry was 19 – recently graduated from high school and in Italy studying painting – when he walked barefooted into RCA’s Italian subsidiary, played some songs he’d written on his guitar and was signed to record the album that would become legend. The first recordings he made proved stuff, so he was paired with members of the Scottish band Middle of the Road, who were in Rome while under contract to RCA Italiana. Convening in a basement home studio with two 4-track reel-to-reel recorders, Mark’s visions coalesced in a dreamy, airy manner – Nick Drake meets Dr. Strangely Strange with a touch of Lewis Carroll The Word Magazine would later write.

Grave Flowers Bongo Band – Strength Of Spring CD/LP (Castleface)
Los Angeles’ Grave Flowers Bongo Band’s sophomore album Strength Of Spring is an inverted pyramid balanced on the headstock of an acoustic guitar, a rainbow painted in campfire smoke, an endless staircase circling into the clouds. That acoustic guitar, perfectly captured here by Ty Segall’s excellently sere and close mic’d production, plays skeleton to these conjurors’ woolly grooves, and singer Gabe Flores’ thousand-yard moan keeps the listener guessing as to exactly where this wildebeest is headed.
Grave Miasmah – Abyss Of Wrathful Dieties CD/LP (Dark Decent)
Bone-breaking, aggressive and demonic death metal pairs with the accomplished and progressive production of Jaime Gomez Arellano (Orgone Studios), forming a sepulchral miasma which elevates the band’s songwriting to a previously unrivalled level.
David Gray – Skellig CD/LP (Laugh A Minute)
Skellig is the 12th studio album from singer/songwriter David Gray. The second LP to be produced by Ben de Vries, the thirteen-track album departs from the shimmering electronics of 2019’s Gold In A Brass Age and embarks on a sparser, communal soundscape with the atmospheric songs centering themselves around six-part vocals with Gray trading his signature gravel for a softer tone. Recorded prior to the pandemic, the album sessions took place at Edwyn Collins’ Helmsdale studio on the Sutherland coast, with de Vries and Gray finessing the mix throughout lockdown.

New release from the country music icon. Where Have You Gone is Jackson’s first country release in over five years.
Jesu – Never CDEP/12” (Avalanche Recordings)
Limited five-track EP of new music from Jesu, to accompany new album Terminus. In contrast to Justin K Broadrick’s music under the Godflesh moniker, Jesu blurs the lines between electronic music and shoegaze. [Jesu’s 2009 album Infinity is also back in-print on vinyl this week.]
Damien Jurado – The Monster Who Hated Pennsylvania CD/LP (Maraqopa)
On The Monster Who Hated Pennsylvania, Damien Jurado gathers up ten stories of people determined not to be broken by their dire circumstances. The world is a liar, the stars are a must, he sings over brushed drums, a circling bassline, and acoustic guitar on “Helena”, which opens his 17th album, the first release from Damien’s own Maraqopa Records. Dire circumstances have long been fixtures of Jurado’s songs, which are filled with ghosts, killers, cruel lovers, and the occasional UFO cult or false messiah. But here, the scenes are earthy, drawn from ordinary but no less immense calamities: hurricanes moving toward town, strained connections, amnesiacs in the front yard.
Myles Kennedy – The Ides Of March CD/LP (Napalm)
Iconic frontman and instrumentalist Myles Kennedy (Alter Bridge, Slash ft. Myles Kennedy & The Conspirators) proves that tumultuous downtime can spark creative genius with The Ides Of March – the full-length follow up to his 2018 solo debut, Year Of The Tiger. The Ides Of March once again showcases the organic side of Kennedy’s musical spectrum and one-of-a-kind voice, but while bright inclusions of lap steel and mandolin have replaced some of the pummeling kick drum and downtuned electric riffage his other renowned projects are known for.
Momo Kodama/Seiji Ozawa/Mito Chamber Orchestra – Hosokawa/Mozart CD (ECM)
Momo Kodama (whose acclaimed album, Point and Line, contrasted Toshio Hosakawa and Claude Debussy) presents the piano concerto which Hosakawa wrote for her, the shimmering Lotus Under the Moonlight. Composed in 2006, Lotus is also an homage to Mozart, with distant echoes of his Concerto No.23 in A Major, the work with which it is paired here in a concert recording from Japan with Maestro Seiji Ozawa and his Mito Chamber Orchestra.
Sinikka Langeland – Wolf Rune CD (ECM)
Wolf Rune casts a new light on the highly personal idiom of Sinikka Langeland, kantele player and folk singer from Finnskogen, Norway. Sinikka integrates her own songs among folk hymns, shamanistic rune songs, traditional dance pieces, poetic sources, and expands the expressive range of her instruments. Few artists embody the spirit of place as comprehensively as Langeland. An absorbing addition to Sinikka’s ECM discography.
Levara – Levara CD/LP (Mascot)
Levara formed in Los Angeles. Singer Jules Galli emigrated from France, while drummer Josh Devine chose L.A. as home versus his native United Kingdom following success behind the kit with One Direction. There they found common vision with Trev Lukather (guitar), son of Toto’s Steve Lukather. Every tune on the band’s eponymous debut emanates from inspiration culled from their lives, and their mission is to rally the globe to connect and groove with the band. [A limited-edition blue color vinyl pressing is also available.]

The Lucid Dream – The Deep End CD/LP (Holy Are You)
Following on from 2018’s acclaimed Actualisation, The Deep End builds upon the acid house influences of the former but ventures into many new paths. Hip hop, techno, drum ‘n’ bass and other ‘genres’ sneak into the creative palette whilst also staying true to the band mantra of throwing the rule book out of the window, as far as ‘genres’ or ‘boundaries’ are concerned.

Recorded at the Capital Centre in Landover, MD on multi-track tape and newly mixed and mastered.
Morcheeba – Blackest Blue CD/LP (Fly Agaric)

A livestream concert film series created deep in the deep sand and huge boulders of some insanely beautiful California wilderness, with performances from Earthless, Nebula, Spirit Mother, Mountain Tamer, and Stoner (a new band by Brant Bjork and Nick Oliveri). Live In The Mojave Desert was inspired by Pink Floyd’s Live At Pompeii.
Never Loved – Over It CD/LP (Equal Vision)
Never Loved is an alternative rock group formed when long-term friends, Cameron Knopp (vocals, guitar) and Jay Gayoso (bass), took matters into their own hands and aimed to create music that spoke directly to people. Having met through South Florida’s local scene, Shane O’Brien (guitar) then joined the duo to officially form the three-piece group. Pessimist – Cult Of The Initiated [Reissue/1997] CD/LP (Season Of Mist)
On their 1997 debut album Cult Of The Initiated, Pessimist unleashed their brutality onto the international metal scene for the first time. One of the most prolific improvisers of his generation returns with the follow up to his 2019 Circuits album: a powerful and cathartic record featuring keyboardist James Francies and drummer Eric Harland. In September 2020, a small window emerged from the restrictions and saw an opportunity for Chris Potter to record Sunrise Reprise with his Circuits trio. It was the first time anyone in the group had recorded with other musicians in months, and for prolific musicians such as these, it resulted in an outpouring of collective creativity, energy, and spirit.
Poverty’s No Crime – A Secret To Hide CD/LP (Metalville)
Eighth album by the German prog-metal/prog-rock veterans.
Rosali – No Medium CD/LP (Spinster)
Recently released on vinyl – now available on CD. While the collection of songs on Philadelphia / Michigan musician Rosali’s electrifying third album, No Medium, explores the often-dark territory of loss, death, sexuality, self-sabotage, and addiction, there is a surprising lightness to its sonic being. Backed by members of the David Nance Group, Rosali (Long Hots, Wandering Shade, Monocot) wades through the emotional mire with infectious, earworm melodies led by her luminous voice. With their rich, raw instrumentation, these rock ballads sound like the resilience discovered in facing one’s darkest moments, the assurance of the calm and clarity that comes after the storm.
Scar Of The Sun – Inertia CD/LP (Napalm)
After sharing the stage with outstanding acts such as Dark Tranquillity and Insomnium, as well as compatriots Rotting Christ, Greek modern metal five-piece Scar Of The Sun delivers their third album. A fresh take on melodic, atmospheric, often progressively influenced metal.

Andy Stott – Never The Right Time CD (Modern Love)
In early 2020 – with a new album almost done and an offer to produce for a mainstream artist on the table – personal upheaval and a pandemic brought everything to a sudden standstill. Months of withdrawal eventually triggered a different approach. Recording hours of raw material; slow horns, sibilance, delayed drums, wondering flutes – whatever, whenever. With vocals recorded by Alison Skidmore, the album was finally completed late last year- taking on a different shape. Its songs desolate, melancholy, defiant, beautiful – often all at once. The sounds echoed music around Stott during those months: Prince, Gavin Bryars, A.R. Kane, Bohren & der Club of Gore, Robert Turman, Cindy Lee, Leila, Catherine Christer Hennix, Junior Boys, László Hortobágyi, Nídia, Prefab Sprout – the unusual / the familiar. [Vinyl edition due June 4.]
Thomas Strønen, Ayumi Tanaka, Marthe Lea – Bayou CD (ECM)
A fresh and open music, delicate and space-conscious, is shaped as drummer Thomas Strønen and Ayumi Tanaka, resurface in a new trio with clarinetist/singer/percussionist Marthe Lea. The group first came together at Oslo’s Royal Academy of Music. The spontaneous spirit of the music is reflected in the trio’s debut recording, which was made at the Lugano radio studio. Except for the title piece, based on a traditional Norwegian tune, the music on Bayou was collectively created in the moment.
Subterranean Masquerade – Mountain Fever CD/2xLP (Sensory)

[A limited-edition red color vinyl pressing is also available.]

Three-Layer Cake – Stove Top CD/LP (RareNoise)
Bassist Mike Watt, drummer/percussionist Mike Pride and guitarist/banjoist Brandon Seabrook have all built their careers on kicking down the barriers between genres, so why would they let a little pandemic-induced isolation and geographic distance stand in their way? Convening for the first time as Three-Layer Cake, these three dizzyingly inventive artists bake up a long-distance set of singular, boundary-defying collaborations on their combustible debut, Stove Top. [A limited-edition green color vinyl pressing is also available.]

Warish – Next To Pay CD (Riding Easy)
With a name like Warish, the San Diego noisy punk-metal trio assured listeners they were in for a maniacal bludgeoning from the get-go. But the band has never been as dark and bitingly vicious as the wholly ominous Next To Pay. The band’s mix of early AmRep skronk, dark horror rock and budget doom antipathy is taken to a whole new level on this thirteen-song invective. [Vinyl edition due May 28.]
Roan Yellowthorn – Another Life CD (Blue Élan)
Roan Yellowthorn’s Jackie McLean wrote much of the New York indie-pop duo’s new album, Another Life, as a reflection on a childhood marked by frequent mental and emotional abuse that led to debilitating OCD by age 7 and an eating disorder at 13. John Andrews & The Yawns – Cookbook LP (Woodsist)
John Andrews is picking flowers from each corner of his life and presenting you with an unusual bouquet. His imaginary band The Yawns are back. Third time’s a charm. In hockey terms, they call it a ‘hat trick’. Three years in the making and we have Cookbook, the third, and most colorful record from your favorite New Hampshire based craftsman. The lyrics are simple and endearing, inspired by mid-century love songs. His inspirations are across the board. If his subconscious was a bootleg taper, life would be the show. At any rate, it doesn’t sound like a record made in New Hampshire, but make no mistake, this is a dyed-in-the-wool Yawns record, refreshingly straightforward yet full of character. It’s less of a crowded honky tonk, and more of an empty, poignant speakeasy.

Rhythmic percussive arrangements by Khaled Yassine are the foundation for oud, violin, buzuq, and Awayez’ lush voice, which floats atop the instrumentation like a series of prayers baking deep inside the ovens of sadness and despair, only to manifest as inspiration for the soul’s navigation towards redemption.

Bodom After Midnight – Paint The Sky With Blood 10” (Napalm)
Limited gold color vinyl pressing. New EP from the melodic death metal band.
Michèle Bokanowski – Rhapsodia / Battements Solaires LP (Recollection GRM)
Michèle Bokanowski’s art is one of densities, much like the density of a given color, a given depth. Her sound textures are, indeed, profound, both in the space occupied by their frequencies and the sharp temporal trail they leave behind. Here lies the composer’s immense talent that finds the right development for each sound, letting it blossom before altering it, adapting the musical structure to let the sounds be, even if it sometimes means returning to the most basic form, such as a loop. This is a sign of great honesty and artistic sensitivity; able to stand back and let the music become music. It is the most radical, the most accurate gesture of composition.

The Gordons crashed upon the do-it-yourself scene of early 1980s Christchurch with torrential force, self-releasing two foundational planks of the vibrant New Zealand underground. Future Shock, a three-song 7” released in 1980, is a wild-eyed rampage, as staggering as any feedback-addled punk then being recorded at Southern Studios. The Gordons LP, which followed in 1981, matches the abandon with motorik churn and livewire dissonance, evoking New Zealand antecedents as divergent as This Kind Of Punishment and the Dead C.

Lost Girls – Menneskekollektivet LP (Smalltown Supersound)
White color vinyl pressing. Norwegian duo Lost Girls, artist and writer Jenny Hval and multi-instrumentalist Håvard Volden, release their first album after collaborating for more than ten years. Volden has been playing regularly in Hval’s live band for more than a decade, and their duo project goes back to an acoustic collaborative album from 2012, using the moniker Nude On Sand. Instead of resurrecting the previous band, Hval and Volden opted for a fresh start for their 2018 EP Feeling, taking nomenclatural inspiration from the 2006 graphic novel by writer Alan Moore and comics artist Melinda Gebbie. For their first LP, Hval and Volden booked an actual studio (Øra studios, Trondheim, Norway), which they had never done before. Recording sessions took place in March2020, even if they felt like the material wasn’t ready for recording. This left a lot to improvisation, and so Menneskekollektivet was created in-between set structures and the energy of collective exploration.

PDP III – Pilled Up On A Couple Of Doves LP (Shelter Press)
Pilled Up On A Couple of Doves is the debut full-length by PDP III, who fell into alignment in December of 2018 amid a handful of immersive and improvisatory recording sessions held at Gary’s Electric Studio in Brooklyn, New York. The trio is a collaboration between composer/producer Britton Powell and two Berlin-based artists, the British composer/cellist Lucy Railton and the electronic artist Brian Leeds (Huerco S). At the outset of these sessions Powell presented a series of compositional sketches anchored around multi-tracked electronics and acoustic percussion. These concepts were then used as the framework for collective improvisation, with the musicians working on instinct and layering as many as eight separate takes across a track.

Screamers – Screamers Demo Hollywood 1977 LP (Superior Viaduct)
These songs were recorded a few months after the Los Angeles punk scene began. These five statements of intent transcend Punk and project forward into the future: to the analog synth wave of the late ’70s and beyond, to the present day, four decades later, when they finally receive an official release. Sourced from the original reel-to-reels, they are a revelation compared to the countless copies that have been circulating by multiple generations of tape-traders. Here, for the first time, is the Screamers’ initial and legendary manifesto. The Screamers concept was simple, yet audacious: take the spirit and the look of Punk-the pseudo-psychotic aggression, the spiky hair, vacant stares and barely concealed sadomasochism-and match it to a different configuration than the typical ’60s rock template.

They began as a psychedelic rock group whose early singles were influenced by The Beatles and diversified their sound using instruments such as keyboards like the Mellotron, reed instruments, and by incorporating jazz and improvisational techniques in their music. After disbanding in 1969, during which time Winwood joined Blind Faith, Traffic reunited in 1970 to release the album John Barleycorn Must Die. The band’s line-up varied from this point until they disbanded again in 1975, although a partial reunion, with Winwood and Capaldi, took place in 1994.

Juan Wauters – Real Life Situations LP (Captured Tracks)
Transparent ruby color vinyl. References to radio abound on Real Life Situations, and with good reason: the album spans genres, narrators, languages, and perspectives with the ease of spinning a rotary knob. Until recently, Wauters had viewed his solo project as just that – a singular expression of his artistic vision. A trip through Latin America while recording his last album, however, laid the groundwork for a different approach. Inviting local musicians to contribute to the songs he was working on produced a collection unlike any of his previous work, infused with the musical traditions of each country he’d visited.

The Young Gods – The Young Gods [Reissue/1987] 2xLP (Two Gentlemen)
The Young Gods’ classic debut album is reissued on vinyl including a previously unreleased John Peel Session. Hailed by international critics, The Young Gods received a unique attention from the British music press: “A firestorm, a total, catastrophic sweep across the scattered fragments of rock history and rock dilapidation, The Young Gods used sampling not out of some nostalgic sense of mischief but to whip up everything into a hurricane of charcoal. The ultimate in technology to release the most determinedly savage sound of the year. We repeat this is the future.” – Melody Maker, Best Album of 1987.

St. Vincent – Daddy’s Home (Loma Vista)
I studied at the feet of those masters.”
