Beirut – Hadsel CD/LP/Cassette (Pompeii)

Hadsel is the first new full-length record since Beirut’s 2019 release, Gallipoli. Recorded in the Norwegian island of Hadsel shortly after a physical and mental break forced Condon to cancel his 2019 tour, Condon was looking for a place to recover after being left in a state of shock and self-doubt. Working in isolation, Condon explains, “I was lost in a trance, stumbling blindly through my own mental collapse that I had been pushing aside since I was a teenager. It came and rang me like a bell. I was left agonizing over many things past and present while the beauty of nature, the northern lights and fearsome storms played an awesome show around me. The few hours of light would expose the unfathomable be auty of the mountains and the fjords, and the hours – long twilights would fill me with subdued excitement. I’d like to believe that scenery is somehow present in the music.” The resulting is a collection of songs beautifully reflecting that vulnerability, sense of self-determination and belief that after collapse, one can learn to manage on their own again. Bruce Hornsby – Spirit Trail [25^th Anniversary Edition] 3xCD/3xLP (Zappo Productions)

Bruce Hornsby has been making great music for a long time, and 2023 marks the 25th anniversary of his Spirit Trail album, which was initially released in 1998. This was Hornsby’s sixth release, and the anniversary edition includes all the original material, remastered by Bob Ludwig, four previously unreleased tracks, and over 70 minutes of live performances. The final touch is a 36-page booklet with new liner notes and photographs.

Todd Snider – Crank It, We’re Doomed CD/2xLP (Aimless)

Todd Snider was amid one of the most creative periods of his career when he recorded Crank It, We’re Doomed in 2007. He was writing at a frenetic pace and experimenting with musical ideas he would develop more fully on later releases. He not only finished and recorded the 15 songs on Crank It that year, but he also wrote and recorded the seven songs that appeared on Shit Sandwich, the digital-only EP released in 2010 by his alter ego Elmo Buzz & The Eastside Bulldogs. The tracks on Shit Sandwich made up the bulk of Snider’s 2016 full-length release, Eastside Bulldog. At some point after Snider decided to put Crank It, We’re Doomed on the shelf, the stereo masters were lost. Over the years, both Snider and McCullough made efforts to locate the masters with no luck. The subject came up again recently when they met to discuss making another record together. After hearing the record for the first time in more than a decade, Snider was no longer bothered by it being “all over the map.” So he shared it with a few friends and advisors, who recognized its historical importance and encouraged him to release it. Chris Stapleton – Higher CD/2xLP (Mercury Nashville)

Current ACM Entertainer of the Year, Chris Stapleton releases his fifth studio album Higher. The album features 14 songs including the first single, “White Horse”. Chris has won numerous awards including eight Grammy Awards, ten Academy of Country Music (ACM) Awards – including the current Entertainer Of The Year, and 14 Country Music Association (CMA) Awards. He was named ACM’s Artist-Songwriter of the Decade. In 2023, Rolling Stone ranked Stapleton at No. 170 on its list of the 200 Greatest Singers of All Time. Youth Fountain – Together In Lonesome CD/LP (Pure Noise)

Since forming Youth Fountain in 2017, the Vancouver BC-based Tyler Zanon has been a prolific writer, ascending on the shoulders of a cutting, introspective sound Kerrang hailed as “so raw and young that one can’t help but wonder if [Youth Fountain] were peers of Taking Back Sunday and Saves The Day back in the early 2000s.” As he revisited lyric notebooks and hard drives from Youth Fountain early days and previous bands, Zanon amassed a collection of demos he brought to producer Anton DeLost (State Champs, Mayday Parade). Together, the pair worked to transform them into Together In Lonesome standouts – like the skate-punk pit-starting “Clarity”, angular “A Few Notes For Orpheus”, and skyscraping “Twin Flame” – while crafting songs like “Identical Days” and first single “Fallen Short”, the anthemic encapsulation of Youth Fountain’s unbridled, nostalgic blend of emo, pop-punk, and alternative rock, from the ground up. Daniel Donato’s Cosmic Country – Reflector LP (Retrace)

Blue colorway. When people first meet Daniel Donato, they’re not fully braced for this walking tornado of creative energy. “They think there’s something that tips the scale in ways they don’t understand,” says Donato about his over-the-top, slightly manic vibe. “But what actually tips the scale is the amount of thought and analysis I put into my work and art, all of which is taken from the lessons of my life.” Reflector‘s 15 songs offer 66 minutes of ecstatic musical immersion. John Moreland – Live At Third Man Records LP (Third Man)

John Moreland is proud to announce his Live At Third Man Records LP, recorded direct-to-acetate at Third Man Records Nashville’s Blue Room venue on November 12, 2022. Third Man Records’ live direct-to-acetate recordings take place in the Blue Room in Nashville, TN and are cut exclusively on a 1955 Scully lathe that originally came from King Records in Cincinnati. Recorded live in one-shot, with no overdubs, no redo’s, no starting-and-stopping, the process is truly of another time, rendered obsolete by the late 1950s and only available nowadays in TMR’s locations in Detroit and Nashville.

Social Distortion – Mommy’s Little Monster (40^th Anniversary) LP (Craft Recordings)

40th anniversary vinyl edition of Southern Californian punk pioneers Social Distortion’s 1983 debut album Mommy’s Little Monster. Newly mastered from the original analog tapes and pressed on 180-gram vinyl, the album contains the nine original songs, including title track “Mommy’s Little Monster” and single “Another State of Mind”, newly packaged in a gatefold jacket to match the original release. There’s a Matt Healy, Billie Eilish and Charli XCX-esque quality to Baby Queen’s thoughtful songwriting. Baby Queen is a deeply personal project for Bella, born out of feeling like a misfit as she tried to fit into London life, pulled into a vacuum of fashion parties and Instagram influencers. Exposure to a world of fake personalities and self-obsession brought her back to her first passion and she felt compelled to write songs about her experiences. For its 50th anniversary, these 2023 editions have been expanded with bonus tracks, added chronologically (twelve on 1962-1966 and nine on 1967-1970). Among the bonus tracks is the last Beatles song “Now And Then” which includes John Lennon’s 1970s vocal and piano demo recording with parts played by Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, as well as a new arrangement for strings. Niecy Blues – Exit Simulation CD/LP (Kranky)

South Carolina singer and producer Niecy Blues describes her songwriting process like an undertow: “I feel a strange pull, and let it carry me, following swirling leaves… whole days roll by, forgetting about the body.” Their full-length debut, Exit Simulation, captures this sense of deep-rooted divination, cycling between simmering ballads, ghosted R&B, downtempo gospel, and looped vocal improvisations-often within the same track. The title is taken from a science fiction novel she read during the purgatory of the pandemic, alluding to a dimensional ideation of departure – “the permission to imagine leaving.” Recorded in her current home of Charleston, she characterizes the album’s mood in terms both reflective and raw: an exploration of things suppressed, foundations beginning to crack, “talking myself off a ledge.”

Sometimes your brain needs to rage, and sometimes it needs to repose. For a decade and a half, the band has yo-yo’ed, almost schizophrenically, between these two modes: walloping space jams with furious guitar solos in one hemisphere of the brain and ethereal, feather-light splashdowns in the other. Brand new album from young Allentown, PA three-piece Catatonic Suns. Their first for Agitated Records. Catatonic Suns comprises eight songs (seven originals, and an Original Sins cover). Their previous album was an incredible melding of big-sounding US/UK underground sounds, but this album has taken that fire further. The band have developed more of a hi-fidelity psychedelic rock with a shoegazery shimmer akin to the late ’80s/ early ’90s Pacific Northwest sound in cahoots with the UK sound of early ’90s Creation/4AD. For fans of Screaming Trees, Nirvana, The Verve (early), Slowdive, Ride, Alice In Chains. Songs that soar, these new recordings verge on the epic.

Cat Power – Cat Power Sings Dylan: The 1966 Royal Albert Hall Concert CD/2xLP (Domino)

Last November in London, Cat Power took the stage at the Royal Albert Hall and delivered a song-for-song recreation of one of the most fabled and transformative live sets of all time. Held at the Manchester FreeTrade Hall in May 1966—but long known as the Royal Albert Hall Concert due to a mislabeled bootleg—the original performance saw Bob Dylan switching from acoustic to electric midway through the show, drawing ire from an audience of folk purists and forever altering the course of rock ‘n’ roll. In her own rendition of that historic night, the artist otherwise known as Chan Marshall inhabited each song with equal parts conviction and grace and a palpable sense of protectiveness, ultimately transposing the anarchic tension of Dylan’s set with a warm and luminous joy. Cave In – Heavy Pendulum: The Singles – Live At BBC’s Maida Vale Studios CD/LP (Relapse)

The legendary Cave In perform a ferocious live set at BBC Studios in Maida Vale. The session was recorded on October 24, 2022, on The Radio 1 Rock Show with Daniel P. What’s Up Front That-Counts is indisputably one of the funkiest albums of all time. The conga-led grooves, impassioned vocals and strutting in-the-pocket arrangements are as infectious as they are groovy. The release of this funk classic marks the second installment in Org Music’s Westbound Records reissue series, complete with three previously unissued tracks. Drop Nineteens – Hard Light CD/LP (Wharf Cat)

When Drop Nineteens disbanded in the mid- ’90s, singer Greg Ackell decided he would never make music again. He wouldn’t noodle around on a guitar in his basement. He wouldn’t get a group of friends together just to jam. He was done with music entirely. Following the release of the shoegaze masterpiece Delaware in 1992, and the intricate experimentations on National Coma in 1993, the group disbanded. They shared stages with Radiohead, Hole, Blur, PJ Harvey and Smashing Pumpkins. They went from being teenagers in Boston to mid-twenty-somethings with a few MTV videos, a couple BBC sessions and numerous festival appearances under their belt. So when Drop Nineteens ceased to be, Ackell felt content. He had the rest of his life in front of him to figure out what he wanted to do. Music was a closed chapter. That was until 2021, when a friend from the band’s early days got Greg on the phone to suggest making some music together, just to see how it felt. Thus, work on Hard Light began. Live archive collection. This recording has never been released or even bootlegged. It captures the Jimi Hendrix Experience at a unique moment in their illustrious career. Before a sold-out audience of 17,000 people, the Experience overwhelmed an unsuspecting audience with a superb show that encompassed his renditions of songs by the Beatles, Bob Dylan, Howlin’ Wolf and Muddy Waters as well as signature songs such as “Purple Haze” and “The Wind Cries Mary”. Are You Experienced, the group’s debut album, had not yet been released by Jimi’s label Reprise.

The album also included the biggest selling 12” single of all time, “Blue Monday”, alongside other classic singles “The Perfect Kiss”, “Bizarre Love Triangle” and the band’s debut single release “Ceremony”. Debut album by English musician PinkPantheress (real name Victoria Beverley Walker). Heaven Knows is the follow-up to her 2021 mixtape To Hell With It and includes the singles “Boy’s A Liar Pt. 2” (with Ice Spice), “Mosquito”, and “Capable Of Love”. The album reveals PinkPantheress’ inner self-reflection as she explores various types of relationships, including romantic, parasocial, materialistic pursuits, grief, and finding contentment within loneliness. “The record is about grief for a loss but being at peace with yourself in your aloneness. Journeying from hell into purgatory, but I’m ok with being there.”

Pleasure Dome – Equinox CD/LP (Hound Gawd!)

Todd Snider – Crank It, We’re Doomed CD/2xLP (Aimless)

Todd Snider was amid one of the most creative periods of his career when he recorded Crank It, We’re Doomed in 2007. He was writing at a frenetic pace and experimenting with musical ideas he would develop more fully on later releases. He not only finished and recorded the 15 songs on Crank It that year, but he also wrote and recorded the seven songs that appeared on Shit Sandwich, the digital-only EP released in 2010 by his alter ego Elmo Buzz & The Eastside Bulldogs. The tracks on Shit Sandwich made up the bulk of Snider’s 2016 full-length release, Eastside Bulldog. At some point after Snider decided to put Crank It, We’re Doomed on the shelf, the stereo masters were lost. Over the years, both Snider and McCullough made efforts to locate the masters with no luck. The subject came up again recently when they met to discuss making another record together. After hearing the record for the first time in more than a decade, Snider was no longer bothered by it being “all over the map.” So, he shared it with a few friends and advisors, who recognized its historical importance and encouraged him to release it. The three artists regrouped at Manchester Orchestra’s studio outside of Atlanta to record a stunning acoustic rendition of the classic with an adjusted track listing. The art has been reimagined as well creating a truly special package for fans of the band and album.

The Dave Brubeck Quartet – Jazz At Oberlin [Reissue/1953] LP (Craft Recordings)

Recorded at Oberlin College, Ohio in 1953, the Dave Brubeck Quartet’s Jazz At Oberlin album is one of the earliest works in the cool jazz genre. As well as Dave Brubeck (piano) the album also features Paul Desmond (alto sax), Lloyd Davis (drums) and Ron Cotty (bass). This new edition of the album is released as part of the Original Jazz Classics Series and is pressed on 180gm vinyl at RTI with all-analog mastering from the original tapes by Kevin Gray at Cohearent Audio. It is presented in a tip-on jacket.

Colby Caillat – Along The Way LP (BFD)

Champion fiddler Aaron Jonah Lewis has been elbow-deep in traditional American fiddle and banjo music since their first lessons at the age of five with Kentucky native Robert Oppelt. Guitar effects drip and splatter throughout (the band had landed an endorsement deal with Vox, who were the leaders in wild effects pedals at that time), and they laid into the material with brute force (and the occasional gentle touch).

This archival recording of the legendary tenor sax “Little Giant” Johnny Griffin playing at Ronnie Scott’s Jazz Club and backed by members of Ronnie’s House Band (Stan Tracey, Malcolm Cecil and Jackie Dougan) was mastered at Gearbox Records using an all-analogue signal chain and cut directly from the original tapes, which were recorded at the club by Les Tomkins in 1964.

There is a consistently restrained, warm feel across the whole work, and the band suggest that the overall theme of the album is about “the impermanence of life in different ways: sickness, relationships, love, death and how our time is finite.” At times the album’s sound has nods to classic Swedish ‘70s psych/prog/folk acts such as Arbete & Fritid, Charlie & Esdor and Träd, Gräs & Stenar.

The band’s 1990 live album Without A Net is a sonic wonder, filled with some of the best material played by the Dead on the last tours featuring Brent Mydland, who would pass away before the album was completed. Included on the album is a beautiful rendition of “Dear Mr. Fantasy”, a late addition to the tracklist, as a tribute to Brent, to whom the album is dedicated.

Originally released as a hand-numbered CD on New Year’s Eve of 2004, Last Light captures Tor Lundvall’s hushed songcraft at its most ghostly and grayscale, stripped bare like branches bracing for winter. Initially conceived of as “a piano album with sparse electronics” (with the working title November), Lundvall’s palette steadily expanded, incorporating synthesizer, samples, bass, metronomes, and his signature spectral vocals. A journal entry from the spring of 2002 proved formative to his evolving vision: “I remember watching the blueish-grey light shimmering outside and hearing distant sounds echoing far away, eventually sinking into silence and stillness.” [Multiple colorways are available.]

Kevin Morby writes (and records, and imagines) at an almost incomparable clip, and his most recent album, This Is A Photograph, studies life, time and mortality through myriad lenses. For their first album on MCA, Oingo Boingo dispensed with the aggressive high energy of their previous albums and created a more traditional alternative rock album with Dead Man’s Party. The first taste came with yet another soundtrack song, “Weird Science”. The danceable electro-pop song charted in the mid- 40s on the Billboard singles chart, which would be their highest charting single release. Continuing to increase their exposure, the band appeared in the 1986 movie Back To School performing the Dead Man’s Party title track, while “No One Lives Forever” was included in the film The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2. Two other single releases “Just Another Day” and “Stay” both have a more radio friendly style than previous single releases.

Tito Puente – El Rey Bravo LP (Craft Recordings)

El Rey Bravo is one of Tito Puente’s best original albums released under the label of Tico in the ‘60s. The album features one of his best hits, “Oye Cómo Va”. Tito Puente and his orchestra lay down a driving irresistible beat that moves from beginning to end in a pulsating performance and create an added appeal with their ensemble singing which lends authenticity to the music.

Ragana – Desolation’s Flower LP (The Flenser)

Ragana is a duo whose members alternate duties on drums, guitar, and vocals to produce some of the most unique and affecting dark music in metal today. The two-piece came together in 2011 in the DIY punk scene of Olympia, WA and are now based in Olympia and Oakland, CA. On Desolation’s Flower, Ragana draws upon a number of influences from the flora and fauna of their Pacific Northwest origins to the darkly nostalgic folk of Mt. Eerie and, yes, their Olympian forebears Wolves In The Throne Room, synthesizing them into an experimental, highly idiosyncratic take on black metal. Nicholas Craven Ransom – Director’s Cut Scene 4 LP (Near Mint)

Jersey City rapper Randy Nichols, better known as Ransom, was originally born in Brooklyn, NY in September 1980. His father’s slaying and mother’s serious illness forced Nichols to stay in foster care a few years, but he and his mother eventually relocated to Jersey City when he was about eight years old. Director’s Cut Scene 4 is the fourth installment in his series with producer Nicholas Craven.

Red Vox – Visions And Afterthoughts LP (Many Hats Endeavors/Red Vox)

Black and white colorway. Rex Vox is a garage rock band hailing from Staten Island. Twitch streamer turned frontman Vinny has built a true success with Red Vox over the past decade. Visions And Afterthoughts is a double album that fans of the band have widely praised.

The RH Factor – Hard Groove [Reissue/2003] 2xLP (Verve)

Verve By Request celebrates the 20th anniversary of this landmark, genre-busting album, conceived, led, and produced by trumpeter Roy Hargrove, who considered it a tribute to his childhood love of hip hop. Featuring a 10-piece band, special guests include D’Angelo, Q-Tip, Erykah Badu and Anthony Hamilton.

Rising Tide – Pixel Prison 2xLP (Old Growth)

On the heels of the four song EP, Together featuring old friend Mike Love, Rising Tide shares the full story of Pixel Prison with their global following. This full length, double gatefold vinyl LP features new collaborations with Love, reggae legend, Clinton Fearon and more. The LP also includes two dub versions of album tracks. Original album art has been created by renowned Japanese artist Tokio Aoyama.

Rolling Stones – Through The Past, Darkly (Big Hits Vol. 2) [Reissue/1969] LP (Abkco)

1969’s Through The Past, Darkly was The Rolling Stones’ second hits LP. Through The Past made a huge splash on both sides of the Atlantic, reaching #2 in both the US and UK. The album includes numerous Stones’ classics including “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” “Let’s Spend The Night Together” and “Honky Tonk Women”. The UK version also includes “You Better Move On,” “Sittin’ On A Fence”, and “We Love You”. The packaging stays true to the original layout, with its trademark octagonal-shaped album cover.

Limited frosty blue colorway. A reissue of the highly sought after second album from the most influential modern surf band. Originally released in 1995 on Estrus! Records, this instrumental classic sold out immediately. Satan’s Pilgrims are known for their ’60s stylized surf soul sound with diverse, imaginative, and melodic compositions. Features the hit song “Plymouth Rock”.

Sylvan Esso – No Rules Sandy LP (Loma Vista)

Limited green color vinyl pressing. Describing their first three albums as a trilogy that is now complete – Sylvan Esso see their latest release, No Rules Sandy, as the beginning of a new period. Their songs are “wilder and stranger and more cathartic than the band used to be,” as Nick Sanborn puts it. “It feels like who we actually are,” Amelia Meath adds. “It just feels like us. We’re not trying to fit into the mold, just happily being our freak selves.”

These New Puritans – Field Of Reeds [Reissue/2013] LP (Infectious Music)

Field Of Reeds is the third studio album by British art rock band These New Puritans, originally released in 2013. Produced by Jack Barnett and Graham Sutton, the album features prominent contributions from over thirty-eight session musicians, including jazz singer Elisa Rodrigues, and finds the band “reinventing themselves as a neoclassical ensemble.” The album is the band’s first without keyboardist Sophie Sleigh-Johnson, who departed from the band in 2012.

The Third Mind – 2 2xLP (Yep Roc)

The Third Mind (Dave Alvin, Victor Krummenacher, Jesse Sykes, David Immerglück and Michael Jerome) return with their second album, 2, and more mind melting guitar work. The psychedelic trip continues with covers of “Sally Go Round The Roses”, “Groovin’ is Easy”, “Why Not Your Baby”, and more. The six-song set includes one original, “Tall Grass”, and runs the length of three LP sides. The fourth side of the LP includes an etching of the Third Mind mandala by Tony Fitzpatrick. The album cover includes artwork from Lou Beach.

Beirut – Hadsel (Pompeii)

Hadsel is the first new full-length record since Beirut’s 2019 release, Gallipoli. Recorded in the Norwegian island of Hadsel shortly after a physical and mental break forced Condon to cancel his 2019 tour, Condon was looking for a place to recover after being left in a state of shock and self-doubt. Working in isolation, Condon explains, “I was lost in a trance, stumbling blindly through my own mental collapse that I had been pushing aside since I was a teenager. It came and rang me like a bell. I was left agonizing over many things past and present while the beauty of the nature, the northern lights and fearsome storms played an awesome show around me. The few hours of light would expose the unfathomable be auty of the mountains and the fjords, and the hours – long twilights would fill me with subdued excitement. I’d like to believe that scenery is somehow present in the music.” The resulting is a collection of songs beautifully reflecting that vulnerability, sense of self-determination and belief that after collapse, one can learn to manage on their own again.

Carnal Tomb – Embalmed In Decay (Testimony)

Carnal Tomb is currently one of the most feral underground death metal bands hailing from Berlin, Germany. Their aggressive take on the early stages of death metal blends sheer aggression with morbid melodies, and though we’re talking about classic old school death metal, the band does not limit itself to a certain style or regional sound, but creates their own mixture out of classic as well as newer influences of the genre.
