Andrew Bird – Outside Problems CD/LP (Loma Vista)

Andrew Bird on Outside Problems: “I wanted to record Inside Problems outside, but this plan fell apart when it became clear that some dude with a woodchipper could really ruin our day. I did so much casual recording during the pandemic, in my backyard or in Ojai, that I gathered enough outdoor recordings to make Outside Problems. Most of these were made without any intention of making an album, just improvisations on simple themes, some of which make up the musical backbone of Inside Problems.”

Cher – Christmas CD/LP (WB)

Recently released on CD – now available on red color vinyl. Christmas, Cher’s first new studio album in five years, includes 13 songs – several holiday classics and four originals. It also has a star-studded list of musical besties including Darlene Love, Stevie Wonder, Michael Bublé, Cyndi Lauper and Tyga. Recorded primarily in L.A. and London, Christmas was produced by longtime collaborator Mark Taylor (“Believe”). Songs include beloved superstar duet classics “What Christmas Means To Me” with Stevie Wonder and “Christmas (Baby Please Come Home)” with Darlene Love. (Darlene first recorded the song with Phil Spector and a l7-year-old Cher singing background vocals); in addition to a haunting version of “Home” written and sung with Michael Bublé. “I never say this about my own records but I’m really proud of this one. It is one of the most amazing highlights of my career,” commented Cher.

Luther Dickinson – Magic Music For Family Folk CD/LP (Antone’s)

“As a father and touring musician, I made this album to keep my kids’ company in my absence, hopefully for them to sing along with in their mom’s car. These songs evoke memories of my mother playing her Martin parlor guitar and of my father, at the family turntable, telling stories about Furry Lewis and Gus Cannon or explaining a song’s meaning. I wanted to share these childhood favorites with my kids. This collection of childhood favorites was recorded for fun, at home, with family and friends in the spirit of sharing. Everyone is welcome. I wanted to share these songs with my kids and my friend’s kids as well as expose my daughters to the joy of learning, performing, and recording music that my father shared with me. The recording was largely done in 2017 during dinner parties, sleep overs and play dates, either in a family style social setting or while the kids slept.”

Evanescence – Fallen (20^th Anniversary Deluxe) 2xCD/2xLP (Craft Recordings)

Celebrating the 20th anniversary of Evanescence’s 2002 debut Fallen, this newly remastered double-disc set includes the singles “My Immortal”, “Going Under”, “Everybody’s Fool”, and the Grammy-winning smash hit, “Bring Me To Life”. The expanded set also includes a trove of bonus material – ten tracks in all – comprising previously unreleased demos and live recordings, plus a selection of rare B-sides. Alongside reimagined artwork with previously unseen photos from the era, plus a heartfelt, handwritten foreword by Amy Lee, who oversaw all aspects of the reissue. Robert Joseph Manning Jr. – Radio Daze & Glamping CD/LP (Omnivore)

New music from the Jellyfish co-founder. Radio Daze & Glamping includes the tracks from 2018’s Glamping along with four new songs co-written with Glamping’s Chris Price (Emitt Rhodes). Roger Joseph Manning Jr. burst onto the music world’s radar as cofounder of Jellyfish in 1990. After two critically acclaimed and now revered releases, the band parted ways, and Roger began a career that saw him in bands including Imperial Drag, The Moog Cookbook, and TV Eyes, as well as contributing to albums from Beck, Morrissey, Lana Del Rey, Blink 182, Johnny Cash, Adele, and more.

The National – Laugh Track CD/2xLP (4AD)

The surprise companion to The National’s April release First Two Pages Of Frankenstein, Laugh Track is the band’s most freewheeling, all-hands-on-deck album in years. If Frankenstein represented a rebuilding of trust between group members after 20+ years together, the vibrant, exploratory Laugh Track is both the product of that faith and a new statement of intent. Reveling in the license to radically upend its creative process, The National honed most of this material in live performances on tour and captured those invigorated versions in impromptu sessions at producer Tucker Martine’s Portland studio. Two nights later in Vancouver, the nearly eight-minute album closer “Smoke Detector” was recorded during soundcheck, completing a body of work bristling with spontaneity and vintage rock energy that makes a perfect complement to the songs found on its more introspective predecessor. The ever-evolving Parton teamed up with an all-star roster of musicians for the 30-song collection, which includes nine original tracks, and 21 covers of iconic rock anthems. Includes collaborations with Paul McCartney & Ringo Starr, Steve Perry, Ann Wilson, John Fogerty, Steven Tyler, Kid Rock, Stevie Nicks, Peter Frampton, Joan Jett & the Blackhearts, Debbie Harry, Kevin Cronin, Rob Halford, Sting, and many others. Post Malone – The Diamond Collection CD/LP (Republic)

Post Malone has surpassed former record-holder Bruno Mars as the artist with the most RIAA diamond-certified singles. Bruno Mars holds six diamond-certified singles whereas Post Malone now has eight, with “Circles”, “Better Now”, and “I Fall Apart” helping him to reach the record this past week. Diamond-certified means the song has sold 10 million units. In honor of this accomplishment, he releases a compilation entitled The Diamond Collection containing all eight of his diamond-certified tracks along with his new single, “Chemical”. The first of his diamond-certified singles, “White Iversion”, was released in 2015. [A Record Store Day Black Friday exclusive clear vinyl pressing is due November 24.]

D’Virgilio, Morse & Jennings – Sophomore CD/LP (Inside Out Music)

Three titans of progressive rock, Nick D’Virgilio (Big Big Train), Neal Morse (Transatlantic, NMB) & Ross Jennings (Haken, Novena) joined forces in 2021 for their Troika album, a record that saw them exploring their love of more acoustic-led music and three-part vocal harmonies. Now the band are extremely pleased to reveal the follow-up, aptly titled Sophomore. The three musicians began trading song ideas in late 2022, before choosing 10 of those to record in January 2023. “I think there was always a plan in the back of everybody’s minds about doing a second one. We just got the conversation started and then started checking out some tunes. There were a lot of songs that were a little less fleshed out than with the first album, but once we got the ball rolling, it kind of went fast”, says Nick D’Virgilio.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Nonagon Infinity (Alien Warp Drive Edition) LP (ATO)

This Deluxe Edition of Nonagon Infinity includes the original album plus a bonus LP with 10 demos. New packaging includes an embossed gatefold jacket with gold foil stamping and a 24″ x 36″ foldout poster. Originally released in 2016, Nonagon Infinity remains the bands bestselling album. ColleGrove was the “gumbo” or “jambalaya” of two of the most prominent and influential names in hip-hop, 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne. 2 Chainz hailing from College Park, Georgia, and Lil Wayne from Hollygrove, a neighborhood in New Orleans, Louisiana, the two combined their hometown roots to create the title, ColleGrove. After much anticipation and almost eight years after their debut album ColleGrove, the powerful duo’s follow up album, Welcome 2 ColleGrove is now available. The project is not only a perfect merger of 2 Chainz and Lil Wayne, but it also features some of the best icons in music today, including Usher, 21 Savage, Rick Ross, Fabulous, Benny the Butcher and more.

Kishi Bashi – Music From The Song Film: Omoiyari CD/2xLP (Joyful Noise)

“Omoiyari” means to have empathy and consideration for others, and act on it. Now, the American indie-folk multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Kishi Bashi releases the companion album to his forthcoming documentary song film, titled Music From The Song Film: Omoiyari.

Bastards Of Soul – Give It Right Back CD/LP (Eastwood Music Group)

Bastards of Soul return with their third album Give It Right Back, the last chapter in the band’s story following the death of their lead singer Chadwick Murray in 2021. The set features “This Love”, a song written by Chadwick and although he was never able to record the song, Keite Young (who performed the stunning cover of “Like A Ship” with Leon Bridges) stepped in with a beautiful rendition that Chadwick would be proud of. Matt Berry presents a unique collaboration with esteemed Library Music label KPM. KPM is renowned for providing the musical bedrock for so many classics of British TV and international cinema, using the best British composers – such as Keith Mansfield, Alan Hawkshaw, John Cameron, and Alan Moorhouse – to do so. Simplicity follows in the footsteps of these giants and is a worthy successor to them.

Brut Noir – IV/III CD/LP (Ici D’ailleurs)

Bruit Noir (Black Noise in French) is the brainchild of Jean Michel Pires and Pascal Bouaziz, formerly the only permanent number of the now defunct cult underground project Mendelson.

After voluntarily crashing the Mendelson plane in 2022, the two iconoclasts join forces for a new Bruit Noir album, drawing inspiration from abstract hip-hop, the incisive sounds of post-punk and the ever-relevant collapsology of industrial music. While Pires develops layers of corrosive sounds, Bouaziz – true to himself – delivers deadpan spoken words full of dark humour, angst and bitterness and delivered in a nightmarish whispered style, sometimes bursting out with anxiously punk theatricals.

Care Of Night – Reconnected CD (Frontiers)

Care Of Night – the Swedish AOR/Melodic Rock band – are now back with their third studio album Reconnected: an absolute stormer of a record, which will delight once again all fans of the genre. Care Of Night aim to create classic ‘80s melodic rock, with their own modern touch. Strong hooks, big arrangements and a lot of feeling is the core of the band’s approach to their personal sound.

Vince Clarke – Songs Of Silence CD/LP+MP3 (Mute)

Vince Clarke, the primary composer and musician in Erasure, and previous songwriter and member of Yazoo, Depeche Mode, and The Assembly, presents (unbelievably) his first-ever solo album, Songs Of Silence. As the album title suggests, Songs of Silence is a lyric-less, instrumental album and is hugely evocative for that. Unlike anything you’ve previously heard from Vince Clarke as an artisan of dynamic electropop, Songs of Silence has about it a more sober ambient electronic beauty; its unique characteristics put it in a category of its own.

Bob Dylan – The Complete Budokan 1978 4xCD (Sony Legacy)

A deluxe box set celebrating Bob Dylan’s 1978 world concert tour and the 45th anniversary of the artist’s first concert appearances in Japan, The Complete Budokan 1978 includes two complete shows from Tokyo’s Nippon Budokan Hall (February 28 and March 1, 1978) featuring 58 tracks, 36 of which are previously unreleased. The audio is newly remixed from the original 24-channel analog tapes. This luxurious 12 x 12” box is imported from Japan and includes four-CD’s, a 60-page full-color photo book of liner notes and previously unpublished photos of Dylan on-stage and behind-the-scenes at the airport, press conferences and more and facsimile memorabilia such as concert tickets, pamphlets, posters, and flyers. Earthside – Let The Truth Speak CD/2xLP (Music Theories)

For a band that has only released one album and a handful of new singles over the better part of a decade, the Earthside name has garnered a near cult-like association with quality. Brian Ferry – Mamouna [Reissue/1994] 3xCD/2xLP (BMG)

Bryan Ferry’s ninth solo studio album Mamouna has been reissued for the first time since 1994 on two deluxe formats (triple-CD and double-LP). Mamouna was, at the time of its original release, Bryan Ferry’s first studio album in seven years to feature original recordings, having worked on the album for six years under the working title of Horoscope. The previously unreleased alternate recordings to the final Mamouna versions are collected for the first time on these deluxe reissues as the Horoscope album. The double-LP audiophile heavyweight vinyl was half-speed cut at Abbey Road Studios, London, by master engineer Miles Showell. The triple-CD version also includes the Horoscope album, with an additional disc of previously unreleased demos or “Sketches” from both the Mamouna and Horoscope albums. The original album features a stellar cast of supporting musicians including Nile Rodgers, Guy Pratt, and Steve Ferrone, as well as contributions from his Roxy Music bandmates Phil Manzanera, Andy Mackay and Brian Eno.

Fishbone – Fishbone [Reissue/1985] CDEP/12” (Bottles To Ground)

Fishbone is the recording debut of alternative group Fishbone. This six-song EP was released in 1985 and captures the band at the height of their early funk/ska era. The track “Party at Ground Zero” remains one of the band’s most popular tracks.

Mike Flannery – Goodtime Charlie CD/2xLP (Oh Boy)

Mick Flannery writes songs with fluency, expressing layered aspects of the human condition, its flaws, triumphs, and general uncertainty. Mick’s latest offering, Goodtime Charlie, marks his eighth studio album and is no exception. The last couple of years saw the release of an album inspired by the world’s most famous chess matches, and a duet album with Susan O’Neill that blossomed into In The Game – the biggest selling Irish independent album of 2021. Now, a new collection of songs that summon up characters and scenes and give voice to emotions that have transformed into the album, Goodtime Charlie.

Restored from a new transfer of original transcription discs and other sources by famed audio engineer John H. Haley, Garland’s last Palace performance on February 24, 1952 has never sounded as good.

The Guru Guru – Make (Less) Babies CD/LP (Hummus)

The Guru Guru has been happily dealing in deep express art rock since 2012, combining feverishly angular guitars with off-kilter, polyrhythms all complimented by erratic and unhinged vocals. While influences are drawn from the likes of Queens Of The Stone Age, Radiohead, The Mars Volta, Soulwax, The Jesus Lizard & Andy Kaufman, the indie-math- psycho-noise rule-book is torn apart, resulting in erratic songs that somehow seem to develop into wriggling earworms. With their third full album Make (Less) Babies, The Guru Guru took matters into their own hands and they did the full production of the album themselves, from recording to mixing. No compromises, no one looking over their shoulders, they could just do their own thing.

Juliana Hatfield – Sings ELO CD/LP (American Laundromat)

“ELO songs were always coming on the radio when I was growing up. They were a reliable source of pleasure and fascination (except for ‘Fire On High’ which scared the heck out of me). With this album of covers I wanted to get my hands deep into some of the massive ’70s hits but I am also shining a light on some of the later work (‘Ordinary Dream’ from 2001’s Zoom album, ‘Secret Messages’ and ‘From The End Of The World’, both from the ’80’s). Thematically, I identify with the loneliness and alienation and the outerspace-iness in the songs I chose. (I have always felt like I am part alien, not fully belonging to or in this Earth world.). Ever since the release of their self-titled debut album Heat (2008) and their hit single “1000 Miles” (2009), H.E.A.T have been a worldwide media favorite with each album being praised as one of the best rock albums in the respective years. Their second studio album Freedom Rock (2009) did not lag behind. Quite the opposite, the young rock band continued their melodic rock firework. Titled “clean, crisp, catchy” by the Classic Rock Society, Freedom Rock made H.E.A.T a name to look out for within the genre. [Vinyl editions due February 16, 2024.]

Iron & Wine – Who Can See Forever – Soundtrack CD/2xLP+MP3 (Sub Pop)

Iron & Wine’s Who Can See Forever is an accompanying live record to the film of the same name. Captured at Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw, North Carolina, the soundtrack features nineteen songs from the twenty plus year career of singer-songwriter Sam Beam. Having found inventive ways to re-invent his catalog live over the years, Who Can See Forever offers new and fresh versions of Iron & Wine songs including “The Trapeze Swinger”, “Boy With a Coin” and “Naked As We Came”. The film – initially intended as a live concert film – evolved into a visual portrait capturing Beam during a creative outburst that earned him four Grammy nominations in four years. Like his music, the film touches on universally personal themes as Beam juggles being an artist, husband and father. Stewart Copeland’s Klark Kent was the first solo project by a member of The Police. M(h)aol consists of Róisín Nic Ghearailt (She/Her), Constance Keane (She/Her), Jamie Hyland (She/Her), Zoë Greenway (She/Her), and Sean Nolan (He/Him). Attachment Styles was originally released on TULLE, an independent women-led record label co-founded by Constance Keane. Attachment Styles is a record about social connection, queerness and healing where the listener goes on a journey. When Róisín was writing the lyrics, she used the theory of attachment styles as an overarching theme which is a theory that looks at the impact our inter-familial relationships and society have on how we relate to one another. The album was recorded, mixed, mastered and produced by Jamie Hyland (bassist) and all accompanying artwork and music videos were created by Zoë Greenway. Totally Hot is the tenth studio album by British-Australian singer Olivia Newton-John, originally released on November 21, 1978. Commercially, it became her first top-ten album on the Billboard 200 chart since Have You Never Been Mellow (1975). Dressed on the album cover all in leather, Newton-John’s transformation was seen to mirror her character Sandy’s transformation in Grease. At the time, Totally Hot was her most successful album, and became her first album to receive a Platinum certification by the Recording Industry Association of America (RIAA).

Malian guitar hero Bounaly (the stage name of Ali “Bounaly” Traore) makes his full-length debut with Dimanche à Bamako (“Sunday in Bamako”). Recorded live on location, the music on Dimanche à Bamako is a mix of regional favorites, traditional standards, and originals. Long songs with looping rhythms, pounding kick, and electric shredding guitar, punctuated by shout outs to the guests of honor. A raw and frenetic take on Northern Mali desert sound, playing for the diaspora at a Bamako wedding.

Tina Brooks – True Blue [Reissue/1960] LP (Blue Note)

In addition to appearing as a sideman on dates led by Kenny Burrell, Freddie Hubbard, and Jackie McLean, tenor saxophonist Tina Brooks recorded several of his own Blue Note sessions as a leader between 1958-61. However, only one would be released during Brooks’ too-brief lifetime, the hard bop masterpiece True Blue. A jewel of the Blue Note catalog, the album was recorded in June 1960 just one week after Brooks appeared on Hubbard’s own Blue Note debut Open Sesame. Once again Brooks and Hubbard joined forces on the frontline with Duke Jordan on piano, Sam Jones on bass, and Art Taylor on drums.

Kenny Dorham is one of the all-time great jazz trumpeters. Starting out, he played in the big bands of Lionel Hampton, Billy Eckstine, Dizzy Gillespie, Mercer Ellington and the quintet of Charlie Parker. As well as featuring as a sideman in some of the best bands of the day, Dorham led his own groups too. Jazz Contrasts was recorded at Reeves Sound Studio in New York between May 21st and 27th 1957. The session finds Kenny on sparkling form alongside the equally magnificent Sonny Rollins on tenor sax, Hank Jones on piano, Oscar Pettiford on bass, Max Roach on drums and masterful jazz harpist Betty Glamann.

John Moreland is proud to announce his Live At Third Man Records LP, recorded direct-to-acetate at Third Man Records Nashville’s Blue Room venue on November 12, 2022. Third Man Records’ live direct-to-acetate recordings take place in the Blue Room in Nashville, TN and are cut exclusively on a 1955 Scully lathe that originally came from King Records in Cincinnati. Recorded live in one-shot, with no overdubs, no redo’s, no starting-and-stopping, the process is truly of another time, rendered obsolete by the late 1950s and only available nowadays in TMR’s locations in Detroit and Nashville.

Joyce Muniz – Zeitkapsel LP (Diggers Factory)

Joyce Muniz already has a story like no other. Born in São Paulo, Brazil, to a family rooted in shamanism and samba, she moved to Vienna in the 90s, becoming a vocalist when the city was a global center for downtempo and starting her DJ career at Flex Club. In the 2000s she brought an authentic voice to the European baile funk explosion, touring with Major Lazer, and moved into production. Sinéad O’Connor is widely regarded as one of the most influential female performers of the ’90s, not only for her sensational performances and raw vocal emotion but also for her outspoken confidence to express herself publicly. Sinéad was born in Dublin in 1966, and was discovered by Paul Byrne, drummer of U2 protégés In Tua Nua, while singing wedding covers in the city. After co-writing the first In Tua Nua single, she left school to focus on music, studying voice and piano at the Dublin College of Music before relocating to London in 1985. She died on July 26, 2023.

Oingo Boingo – Oingo Boingo EP [Reissue/1980] 12” (Rubellan Remasters)

Gray w/ black colorway. The debut EP by Oingo Boingo was released in 1980 on IRS Records. Three of the four songs included were from a self-financed demo the band had been passing around in an effort to obtain a recording contract. IRS originally released the EP on 10″ vinyl with an inner sleeve containing lyrics and credits, including the original version of the track that would become the title of their eventual debut LP, Only A Lad. The EP would later be reissued on 12″ vinyl, though no longer with the inner sleeve, and replaced the original recording of the song “Ain’t This The Life” with a new recording more in line with the hyperactive vocals front man Danny Elfman would soon become known for. This new color vinyl reissue compiles everything into a 12″ package containing both versions of “Ain’t This The Life” and including an insert replicating the inner sleeve from the original 10″ release.

Color vinyl reissues. In the late 1970s Athens, Georgia was buzzing with a raw but sophisticated music scene. The turn of the decade began producing new sounds from bands like the B-52’s, R.E.M. and Art-Rock luminaries, Pylon. Before they were a band, Pylon were art-school students at the University of Georgia: invigorated by big ideas about art and creativity. In 1980 the band released its first record, Gyrate, and began touring across the country in support of the release. Following the critical acclaim of Gyrate, Pylon went back into the studio. They gleefully pulled their songs apart and put them back together in new shapes, revealing a band of self-proclaimed non-musicians who had transformed gradually but noticeably into real ones. The resulting album was Chomp.

The Rapture’s Echoes was and is a clear-eyed kick in the teeth, a band at the peak of their powers and producers with an ambitious vision making. The whole “indie crowd finally learns to dance” narrative is overwrought and irrelevant in 2023 – perhaps context is no longer king – but what remains clear is that this album, made by a San Diego punk band who had moved to New York via Seattle, and produced by the DFA in their own studio, where time and gear and ideas both good and bad were aplenty, maintains an energy and search for catharsis that could bulldoze even the most uptight. For whatever reason, it’s remained out-of-print on vinyl since its initial run. And now, with minimal pageantry, it’s back. Recut by Bob Weston, loud and clear.

RPWL – Beyond Man And Time [Reissue/2012] LP (Gentle Art Of Music)

In 2012, 12 years after it was founded, the Freising quintet RPWL ventured into their first concept album. Beyond Man And Time is a musical journey through the world outside of Plato’s cave – and the first chart entry of Germany’s best art rock band. The band created themes for each character on the concept album. Well-placed oriental percussions, extensive Moog solos or Indian sitar ensure an atmospheric and colorful implementation.

Doug Sahm – Live From Austin TX [Reissue/2006] 2xLP (New West)

Translucent green colorway. This performance, recorded October 14, 1975, came after Doug had temporarily retired the Sir Douglas name, but features original member Meyer along with musical compadres Martin Steitle, John Barber, Steve McDaniels and Harry Hess.

Sawayama is the debut album from Japanese pop auteur Rina Sawayama – an exploration of identity, family, gender and sexuality, set to a backdrop of future-facing, genre-splicing pop music. Championed by Pitchfork, The Fader, New York Times, BBC Radio 1, The Guardian, Vice and more, Sawayama is an exciting first step from an artist unafraid to push pop into new realms.

Scritti Politti – White Bread, Black Beer [Reissue/2006] LP (Rough Trade US)

Fittingly, for the release of White Bread, Black Beer, which was a beautiful expression of the creative energy Gartside had sustained over two decades at that point, Scritti Politti returned to Rough Trade for the first time since the mid-1980s. Humbly described by Green on release as “an album of me playing around in the back room… just me alone at home”, White Bread, Black Beer was universally acclaimed. Described as “a return to the top” by The Guardian, “the best record of this restlessly self-critical career” by Uncut and “a sophisticated, gloriously gentle thing” by Pitchfork, the record was duly nominated for the 2006 Mercury Prize (and was only pipped by Arctic Monkeys’ debut).

Secret Sisters – You Don’t Own Me Anymore [Reissue/2017] LP (New West)

Seamlessly and effortlessly Secret Sisters harmonize, add in the honest songwriting, sympathetic arrangements and subtle playing on these dozen tunes they create a perfect storm of artistic ambition. This album is a nice reminder of just how powerful and moving the merging of two stunning voices can be.

Wayne Shorter – Night Dreamer [Reissue/1964] LP (Blue Note)

1964 was a pivotal year in the musical life of Wayne Shorter. Early in the year, the saxophonist was still a member of Art Blakey & The Jazz Messengers, appearing on classic Blue Note albums like Free For All and Indestructible. That summer he would join the Miles Davis Quintet, cementing a lineup that became one of the seminal bands in jazz history. But before that he stepped out confidently as a Blue Note artist when he entered Van Gelder Studio in April to record his masterful label debut as a leader, Night Dreamer. The sublime six-song set signaled the arrival of one of the most important new voices in jazz, a visionary composer and thrilling improviser with a wholly distinctive sound.

The Sir Douglas Quintet – Live From Austin TX [Reissue/2006] 2xLP (New West)

Crystal pink colorway. For this Austin City Limits set recorded on January 21, 1981, Doug Sahm (AKA Sir Doug) reunited with original band members Augie Meyers and Johnny Perez, along with the legendary Alvin Crow on guitar and Speedy Sparks on bass for a no-holds-barred, rip-snortin’ Texas rock ‘n’ roll revival.

Speedy Ortiz – Major Arcana [Reissue/2013] LP (Carpark)

Limited ‘the star’s sky’ speckled blue color vinyl pressing. On their debut full-length, Western Massachusetts’ Speedy Ortiz manage a bit of magic by conjuring the spirits of classic American indie rock, while twisting those ghosts into new shapes. Sweet vocal harmonies run up against gnarly distortion, aided by chunky bass and heavy, fill-laden drums. Occult and supernatural themes run deep through Major Arcana, inspired by singer-guitarist Sadie Dupuis’ readings on black magic. Dupuis’ knotty and abstract lyrics bring to mind fellow wordsmith Stephen Malkmus, while referencing horror film tropes, chemistry, and neuroscience. Major Arcana‘s literal translation is “major mysteries,” a phrase from tarot cards.

Susan Tedeschi – Live From Austin TX [Reissue/2012] 2xLP (New West)

Purple colorway. Susan is the essence of what Austin City Limits is all about. Obviously she draws from the best of blues, rock, soul and funk, but what she does best comes from deep within her heart and soul. You’d never know it if you ran into her on the street, but once she gets up on that stage with her band and a guitar in hand, she can burn down the house! It takes a lot of courage to take a classic like Dylan’s “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” and breathe new life into it, but Susan has a way of putting her own stamp on everything she does.

Terry Telson – While In Exile [Reissue/1975] LP+MP3 (Skull Valley)

Arizona has long been a land of outsiders, roamers, wanderers and honest ‘real people’ artists. One such of these characters is Terry Telson. For nearly three years Terry isolated himself in the high mountains of Prescott, Arizona working diligently to perfect his craft. His effort, While In Exile (released locally in 1975) fully embodies the spirit of the true Arizona poet, who’s both dedication and skill is displayed through grueling hard work, sacrifice and outright honesty. While there are bountiful amounts of privately pressed folk records from the 1970’s, very few are as genuine, and even less display the level of musicianship and resolve which Terry Telson delivers in sole Arizona release.

Thin Lizzy – Vagabonds Of The Western World [Reissue/1973] 4xLP/2xLP (Mercury)

Deluxe vinyl reissues (including a limited double-LP purple colorway) celebrating the 50th anniversary of Thin Lizzy’s third studio album, Vagabonds Of The Western World. Featuring rarities and unreleased music never previously heard. Originally released in 1973, it was the band’s last album with original guitarist Eric Bell and the first to feature the artwork of Jim Fitzpatrick. Thin Lizzy was putting all they had into the music and taking risks. It’s passionate, high energy and distinctive. The remastered deluxe four-LP set features rarities, radio sessions, unreleased music, rare photos, extensive liner notes by Mark Blake, memorabilia and hardback book.

A Tribe Called Quest – The Love Movement [Reissue/1998] 3xLP (Sony Legacy)

The Love Movement is the fifth studio album by A Tribe Called Quest. Originally released on September 29, 1998, by Jive Records, it is a concept album exploring the lyrical theme of love containing 15 album tracks and six bonus tracks over three-LPs. The album features the singles “Find A Way” and “Hot Sex” and has been certified Gold by the RIAA.

Trio Valore – Return Of The Iron Monkey [Reissue/2008] LP (Record Kicks)

15th anniversary expanded clear vinyl edition of the legendary soul jazz album from British Supergroup Trio Valore. Return Of The Monkey features Steve White (The Style Council) on drums, Damon Minchella (Ocean Colour Scene, Paul Weller, Richard Ashcroft) on bass and Seamus Beaghen (Madness, Desmond Dekker, Tom Jones) on Hammond organ. The album originally released in October 2008, rapidly reached a cult status amongst mod jazz, soul jazz and rare groove fans.

Unknown Mortal Orchestra – II – 10 Year Anniversary Expanded Edition 2xLP (Jagjaguwar)

Unknown Mortal Orchestra came to life in basements and bedrooms, the musical vision of Portlander-via-New Zealand Ruban Nielson that fused guitar-god riffs, choppy percussion, soul and funk. II, the sophomore album from UMO, emerged in an era rampant hedonism and isolationism and became the blueprint for everything Nielson has become renowned for. It was, and is, the solidification of Unknown Mortal Orchestra as an endlessly intriguing, brave and addictive band. Ten years on, 2013’s II is back with an expanded edition. Written during a punishing, debauched touring schedule during which Nielson feared for both his sanity and health, II illustrates the emotional turmoil of life on the road, painting surrealist, cartoonish portraits of loneliness, love and despair.

Vitalic – OK Cowboy [Reissue/2005] 2xLP (PIAS America)

Critically acclaimed and widely praised, from the club world to cinema, OK Cowboy is a ground-breaking record and is now available in a light blue opaque pressing. Vitalic has a certain playful mystique that goes beyond Pascal Arbez’s invented back story of being a Ukrainian trubcka player and occasional gigolo from a family of sea otter fur traders. In fact, his inability to take anything too seriously, least of all the music he makes, may be the key to Vitalic’s appeal. In an interview around the time that his full-length debut, OK Cowboy, was released, Arbez stated that he didn’t listen to techno albums “because they are boring,” something that can’t be said of this witty, stylistically omnivorous album.

Ween – The Pod (Fuscus Edition) 2xLP (ATO)

Back in print on vinyl. Named one of the 20 best albums of 1992 by Spin Magazine, Ween’s second record was recorded by Dean and Gene Ween on a Tascam four-track cassette recorder between January and October 1990. All songs were recorded at the Pod, the apartment where they lived for a year and 10 months. In 1999 The Stranger declared: “someday, classical music students will write dissertations on The Pod.” “Fuscus Edition” pressed on brown and cream A-side/B-side 2xLP.

Stian Westerhus – SOTT LP (House Of Mythology)

Orange colorway. What is in a song? Why write songs? Make several songs in to an album and a higher meaning might reveal itself. Make two albums years apart from the same coil of rope and time might just be a revelator. Make a third and it becomes evident that it was not just an event or two in time, it was a large proportion of a life. It might just have been life itself. The term trilogy is not much in use these days, but Amputation, Redundance and SOTT must be seen together. Not as concept albums as such, but as time stamped images of life. Where Amputation exploded Redundance came to clean up the mess. After years of turmoil and change; SOTT comes to town with its hammer and bucket of nails for the coffin. SOTT is unapologetically honest in that respect.

The John Wright Trio – Nice ‘N’ Tasty [Reissue/1960] LP (Newland)

Truly one of the most underrated pianists of the early 1960s, who’s run of albums on Prestige have gained in stature over the years. Mixing a blend of soulful hard bop with a swinging Chicago edge, these recordings are to be treasured. His last album for Prestige was released in 1965 (having been recorded in ’61) before Wright disappeared into obscurity, performing on the Chicago club scene and working as a librarian at the Cook County Jail, Chicago from the mid-1980s until 1999.

Yob – Catharsis [Reissue/2003] LP (Relapse)

Fans across the globe consider Catharsis, the sophomore album by Oregon’s Yob, to be the band’s best work and one of the finest doom metal releases of the genre. Yob’s sought-after cult classic, 10 years after its initial release. Remastered from the original tapes by legendary grunge godfather Tad Doyle, Catharsis sounds heavier and more monstrous than ever.

Yuna – Y5 LP (YRR)
