CDs + Vinyl:
Abhorrent – Intransigence CD (Willowtip)
Abhorrent’s wealth of riff-variations and athletic rhythmic assault surge constantly forwards, as brief glimpses into parallel dimensions that pass by with a deathlike unstoppable certainty. Abhorrent is like the amoral and violent force of nature, realizing itself through pure will and power both in spite of death and echoing it viciously all the way to its end.
Abigail Williams – Accuser CD (Candlelight)
“If you’ve had issue with Abigail Williams in the past (albeit their generic Dimmu Borgir worship or their deathcore days) don’t let that stop you from listening to what is actually a fantastically composed album. The Accuser stands as my favorite incarnation of the band’s material. The old school mentality gives the band a serious edge, though their still not without modern influence in the post metal world (we’re ‘post’ everything these days, aren’t we?). Those that love Gorgoroth and Emperor, but can stand to see flashes of bands like Pelican in their black metal take note and get on this one.” – Metal Injection
Adele – 25 CD/LP (XL/Columbia)
“‘Hello’ doesn’t just introduce 25; in many ways, it sums up the album. On 25, the rage and heartache of 21 are replaced by longing: for connection, for youth, for reconciliation and for lifelong bonds. Like other songs on the album, ‘Hello’ is filled with thoughts of distance and the irrevocable passage of time, of apologies and coming to terms with the past. Musically, ‘Hello’ has verses with just voice and piano followed by huge, ringing choruses; similarly, the album as a whole switches between organic, unplugged ballads and booming modern pop.” – The New York Times Music
Herb Alpert’s Tijuana Brass – Whipped Cream & Other Delights [Reissue/1965] CD/LP (Herb Alpert Presents)
50 years ago, Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass released the iconic album, Whipped Cream & Other Delights. In celebration of its 50th anniversary, this classic slice of Latin jazz/pop has been remastered and is back in print on CD and vinyl.
Anthrax – Spreading The Disease [Reissue/1985] 2xCD (Island)
Digitally remastered and expanded deluxe double-CD edition of the thrash metal band’s 1985 album, released to coincide with it’s 30th Anniversary. Spreading The Disease is the second studio album by Anthrax. It was the band’s first album to feature vocalist Joey Belladonna and bassist Frank Bello.
Arca – Mutant CD (Mute)
New album from Kanye West and Björk affiliate Arca. Spanning 20 tracks, “Mutant is about sensuality and impulsiveness as escape routes out of rigidity,” the Venezuelan producer explained in a press release. “Softness as a weapon when the mind attacks itself.” Vinyl due January 22.
Courtney Barnett – Sometimes I Sit And Think, And Sometimes I Just Sit [Deluxe Edition] 2xCD/2xLP+MP3 (Mom + Pop)
Deluxe double-CD version adds Live At Electric Ballroom In London. Includes new artwork, fold out poster, four limited edition Polaroid photos shot by Courtney, a 16-page booklet all in a matte laminated collector’s edition box set. Mixing witty, often hilarious, occasionally even heartbreaking observations with devastating self-assessment, Courtney Barnett’s debut album, Sometimes I Sit and Think, and Sometimes I Just Sit, cements her standing as one of the most distinctive and compelling voices in indie rock. These songs reveal not only an assured songwriter and guitar player, but also an artist who in just a few years has already proved highly influential. (Limited copies available on yellow vinyl.)
Beach Boys – Beach Boys’ Party! Uncovered And Unplugged 2xCD (Capitol)
Beach Boys’ Party! is the tenth studio album by the Beach Boys and is mostly cover songs. When originally recorded, the band invited friends and family into the studio for a party. Those sounds were then layered over the recorded music for a true party sound. Uncovered And Unplugged now strips away those party sounds so that the true sessions can be heard in their entirety. This double-disc set pairs the original 1965 album with the newly restored audio, outtakes and dialog. Vinyl version due December 11.
Beat Happening – Look Around CD/2xLP+MP3 (Domino)
Formed in the early ‘80s in Olympia, Washington by Calvin Johnson, Heather Lewis and Bret Lunsford, Beat Happening combined a primitive pop sound with a D.I.Y. attitude and inspired countless artists along the way. The community that arose around the band and their label, K Records, was in many ways, the sonic antithesis of their Seattle neighbors (and friends) but was no less influential. Look Around is a remastered, double album anthology, handpicked by the band. It’s a great starting point for the uninitiated as well a refreshing reminder to those who caught the wave the first time around.
Blue October – Things We Do At Night (Live From Texas) CD (Updown/Brando)
Recorded at The House Of Blues in Dallas, TX, over Thanksgiving weekend, November 28-29, 2014, this live performance covers all of the hits and favorites from the Blue October’s last four albums: Foiled, Approaching Normal, Any Man In America, and Sway. Also available on DVD and Blu-ray. Vinyl version due early next year.
Boysetsfire – Boysetsfire CD/LP (Bridge Nine)
“From the old school stench of opener ‘Savage Blood’ all the way through to the crowd killing bounce of closer ‘Bled Dry’, Boysetsfire play with the vigor and reason of band half their age. The band jump from the honestly bruising to the vitally rousing within a change of track and come out the other end with an album for every variety of music fan there is. ‘Don’t Panic’ flies by with vintage hardcore rage while ‘Ordinary Lives’ delivers a rallying cry for the ages.” – Already Heard
Ben Caplan – Bird With Broken Wings CD/LP (Coalition Music)
“East Coast troubadour Ben Caplan returns with a new LP Birds With Broken Wings. Opening with the Balkan-esque folk stomp of the title track and the equally rich and bluesy ‘I Got Me A Woman,’ the album also delves into more melancholic territory with folk ballads like “Belly of the Worm” and “Devil Town.” There’s even a healthy dose of old-timey romance thanks to cuts like “Night Like Tonight” and “40 Days & 40 Nights.” – Exclaim!
Tracy Chapman – Greatest Hits CD (Elektra)
Brings together, for the first time, classic tracks from Chapman’s celebrated career that now spans four decades and includes eight best-selling studio albums. Compiled by Chapman herself, the featured songs have also been newly remastered. 18 tracks total.
Club 8 – Pleasure CD/LP (Labrador)
“Since 1995, Karolina Komstedt and Johan Angergård have comprised the Åhus, Sweden synthpop duo Club 8. They’re back this fall with their ninth album, Pleasure, just in time for the band’s twentieth anniversary. Komstedt describes it as ‘an album about love, sex and jealousy,’ so you won’t be surprised to learn the lead single is called ‘Love Dies.’ It’s a ballad that matches Angergård’s emotional electronic swells with Komstedt’s otherworldly siren song” – Stereogum. (Limited copies also pressed on clear vinyl.)
John Coltrane – A Love Supreme: The Complete Masters 2xCD/3xCD (Impulse!/Verve)
Easily one of the most important records ever made, John Coltrane’s A Love Supreme was his pinnacle studio outing that at once compiled all of his innovations from his past, spoke of his current deep spirituality, and also gave a glimpse into the next two and a half years. (Triple-CD edition contains an extra disc with five additional tracks.)
Contrarian – Polemic CD (Willowtip)
Debut full-length album from progressive death metal band.
Patrick Cowley – Muscle Up CD/2xLP (Dark Entries)
Dark Entries and Honey Soundsystem Records have teamed up again to release another volume of gay porn soundtracks by San Francisco-based musician and producer, Patrick Cowley. Perhaps one of the most revolutionary and influential people in the canon of disco music, Cowley created his own brand of Hi-NRG dance music, “The San Francisco Sound.” All songs on Muscle Up were recorded between 1973 and 1980.
Lana Del Rey – Honeymoon [Deluxe Edition] CD (Interscope)
Limited box set edition featuring a hardcover album book and exclusive image lithograph prints.

Lovers of fusion’s ‘golden era’ (mid-’70s through the mid-’80s) will find plenty to enjoy throughout this sizzling session, as Dwiki and company never let off the gas while scaling high-altitude sonic terrain in effortless fashion.
Dimesland – Psychogenic Atrophy CD (Crucial Blast)
Appearing at the end of 2014 as a self-released digital-only title, Dimesland’s Psychogenic Atrophy was met with little fanfare, yet made an immediate and powerful impression upon those who heard it. Described by Invisible Oranges as a “sonic nightmare of thrash… that blends instrumental ability with the progressive stabs of Dimension Hatross-era Voivod….” and landing on numerous end-of-year best-of lists, Psychogenic Atrophy flattened just about everyone who encountered it.
Warren Ellis – Mustang [OST] CD (Milan)
The debut film from Turkish director Deniz Gamze Erguven, Mustang follows five young orphan sisters in a remote village on the Black Sea as they adjust to the life society wants for them. Dealing with themes of conservative morality and cultural tradition towards burgeoning sexuality, Mustang made a powerful impression at the 2015 Cannes Film festival. Warren Ellis provides an unmistakably international sound to the movie with his powerful score.
Enya – Dark Sky Island CD (Reprise)
The Enya creative triumvirate — Enya, producer and sound engineer Nicky Ryan, and lyricist Roma Ryan — started work on Dark Sky Island in the spring of 2012. Inspired by Roma’s work on a series of poetry books themed around islands and specifically the island of Sark’s decision to be designated as a dark sky island, the album’s title track was the first song to be written for the collection. Available in Regular and Deluxe editions. Deluxe adds three bonus tracks.
Scott Fagan – South Atlantic Blues [Reissue/1968] CD/LP (Saint Cecilia Knows)
Scott Fagan’s debut album, South Atlantic Blues, is a genuine lost classic—a mystical, mythical and deeply soulful masterpiece. Recorded when Scott was just 21, virtually homeless and with pennies to his name, it was released in 1968 on Atco Records but remained obscure, confounded by a series of frustrating near-misses. From being mentored by Doc Pomus to being discovered by Jasper Johns, Scott’s incredible story and music unfolds on South Atlantic Blues, remastered and reissued for the first time ever on CD and vinyl. Steeped in delicate psych, soul and resonant acoustic guitars “that stroke and stone you to the core” (Shindig), it’s an epic song cycle about Fagan’s hard-scrabble life in the Virgin Islands, where he was raised and lived until 19 before returning to his birthplace of New York City.
Faith No More – We Care A Lot [Reissue/1985] CD (Manifesto)
30th anniversary reissue of FNM’s debut. The album features the original lead singer Chuck Mosley. For a refresher for the younger fans out there, We Care A Lot served as Faith No More’s debut disc. At the time, the band had Chuck Mosley as their lead vocalist, with the lineup rounded out by mainstays Mike Bordin on drums, Roddy Bottum on keyboards and Bill Gould on bass, with Jim Martin serving as the guitarist. Of the songs on the disc, the title track “We Care A Lot” would become their biggest hit, though it wasn’t really until the song was re-recorded for their Introduce Yourself album that it really took off.
Florestano – Noh CD/LP (Kowloon)
Employing both analogue and digital recording techniques, almost all of Florestano’s compositions start at his old black piano and his drums before he moves into more experimental territory with synths as well as field recordings. Often taking cues from renowned avant-garde composers Bernard Parmegiani and Iannis Xenakis, Florestano’s electronic soundscapes and compositions show a natural affinity for oriental cinematic scores, classic lieder’s music especially Hugo Wolf and ‘90s US west coast experimental scene.
Food – This Is Not A Miracle CD (ECM)
The British/Norwegian Food duo of Iain Ballamy and Thomas Strønen are joined again by Austrian guitarist and electronics player Christian Fennesz for a new album of powerful grooves, evocative textures and exploratory improvisation, sometimes hypnotically insistent, sometimes turbulent.
Fourplay – Silver CD (Heads Up)

The 10 new original compositions comprising Silver play off of the anniversary, bearing titles such as “Sterling,” “Precious Metal” and “A Silver Lining.” Special guests include saxophonist Kirk Whalum, and guitarists (and original Fourplay members) Lee Ritenour and Larry Carlton.
Andy Grammer – Magazines Or Novels [2014] CD (S-Curve)
Deluxe edition of Grammer’s 2014 album contains four bonus tracks and all new cover art. Magazines Or Novels features the single “Back Home” — a joyously anthemic track that illustrates Grammer’s knack for writing infectious, relatable songs and the strength of his soaring voice.

(Single vinyl LP version contains highlights from the CD collection.)
Brian Harnetty – Rawhead & Bloodybones CD (Dust-To-Digital)
The third in composer and artist Brian Harnetty’s series of recording projects stemming from the Berea College Appalachian Sound Archives, Rawhead & Bloodybones combines samples of music and folk tales with live instruments. The historic archival recordings of children recounting folk tales were made by Leonard Roberts in the 1940s and ’50s. The combination of the children’s youthful voices and the often gruesome stories they tell offers a striking and dramatic contrast. These recordings, along with other archival samples from Berea, are woven into a larger musical world, with additional instrumental parts added as a counterpoint to the stories. Working closely with archivists, historians, musicians, and the families of those sampled, Rawhead & Bloodybones respectfully re-contextualizes traditional music and folk tales into a unique, beautiful, playful, and haunting whole. Six-panel foldout case.
Kristian Harting – Summer Of Crush CD/LP (Soulfood)
Danish troubadour Kristian Harting returns with a new album. While its predecessor Float incorporated ethereal songwriting skills deeply inspired by Western lo-fi pop, Mali blues and the more avant-garde side of folk, Kristian widens his focus towards a much more pop-orientated approach. Summer Of Crush is an album oscillating between melancholic dreamscapes and synth-laden shamanic dance tracks.
Lee Hazelwood – The Very Special World Of Lee Hazelwood [Reissue/1966] CD (Light In The Attic)
Lee Hazelwood – Lee Hazlewoodsim: Its Cause And Cure [Reissue/1967] CD (Light In The Attic)
Lee Hazelwood – Something Special [Reissue/1968] CD (Light In The Attic)
The mid-to-late ’60s were strange days for Lee Hazelwood. Having struck gold as songwriter and vocal foil for Nancy Sinatra, he signed up to MGM as an artist in his own right, and between 1966 and 1968, produced three ambitious solo albums that were eclectic, idiosyncratic, and most of all, unpredictable. It was a happy time for Lee; his music was hot on the charts, he was fully immersed in his collaboration with his muse, Suzi Jane Hokom. Vinyl editions due December 11.
Mette Henriette – Mette Henriette CD (ECM)
Debut from young Norwegian saxophonist, composer and improviser Mette Henriette Martedatter Rølvåg.
Honeymoon Disease – Transcendence CD/LP (Napalm)
“Honeymoon Disease is something special. Think of this, you have Deep Purple and Thin Lizzy musical style with an old school Heart meets Suzi Quatro vocal sound. This is a band who lives by the groove, and with the vocal delivery on this record, that groove is just so catchy and addictive.” – Infrared Mag
Lightnin’ Hopkins – Shootin’ Fire: April 11, 1969 (Mono) CD (Cicadelic)
Lightnin’ Hopkins & Billy Bizor – Wake Up The Dead: June 17, 1968 March 1, 1969 April 11, 1969 2xCD (Cicadelic)
Two collections of rarities/sessions reveal Lightnin’ Hopkins in his prime.
Julia Kent – Asperities CD (Leaf)
Vancouver-born and New York-based, acclaimed cellist Julia Kent rose to prominence with Rasputina and Antony & The Johnsons. Her extensive résumé includes recent work with Swans, Aidan Baker, Rachel Grimes, Rutger Zuydervelt, Barbara Morgenstern, Library Tapes and Khan of Finland. Asperities is the artist’s fourth solo album. As the title suggests, this is a record born of conflict: internal, personal and global. Universal themes. The build of pressure and the threat of violent release. Modern guilt. Modern fears. Looped cello, electronics and found sounds create a world where the technological and the organic merge in perfect symbiosis, the layers of sound peeling back to reveal a beating, bloody human heart at its center. Vinyl version due December 18.
Kode9 – Nothing CD (Hyperdub)
Nothing’ is Kode9’s first solo album and is about nothing. The album throws horror soundtracks, sampled library and j-pop records into a no man’s land between grime, early dubstep and Chicago footwork. Mostly instrumental, it zigzags between hypnotic, downcast loops, growling drones, and jagged cut- ups of androids gone haywire, threaded through twitchy, transatlantic rhythms and sub-bass inaudible through your laptop speakers. Vinyl edition TBA.
Kottonmouth Kings – High Standards & Greatest Hits 2xCD (United Family Music, Inc.)
With his United Family Music label, Daddy X of Kottonmouth Kings has taken control of his catalog and is releases this hits collection. 35 tracks, including collaborations with Tech N9ne, Cypress Hill, Insane Clown Posse, Chris Webby, Twiztid, (hed) p.e., and more.
M83 – Digital Shades Vol. 1 [Reissue/2007] CD/LP (Mute)
M83 – Saturdays = Youth [Reissue/2008] CD/LP (Mute)
Digital Shades Vol. 1 is the fourth studio album by M83. The mostly instrumental album was originally released on Mute in 2007, and features only founding member Anthony Gonzalez.
Old fans will note a substantial difference between Saturdays = Youth and M83’s previous releases; the album is more shoegazey in texture and more pop in construction. While the galactic, deep space vibe is still there, the overall aesthetic is more Cocteau Twins a la My Bloody Valentine rather than another addition to the towering electronic post-rock tradition that Mogwai and Sigur Rós perfected. The record draws heavily from the likes of Tears For Fears and Cocteau Twins, as well as classic John Hughes teen movies.
Alex Machacek/Raphael Preuschl/Herbert Pirker (Fabulous Australian Trio) –Living The Dream CD (Abstract Logix)
Living The Dream is the second chapter of FAT — next-generation guitar modernist Alex Machacek’s Fabulous Austrian Trio, featuring bassist Raphael Preuschl and drummer Herbert Pirker. With the sensitive touch of a jazz guitarist, the intervallic ingenuity and harmonic density of a post-serialist composer, and a seemingly endless capacity for improvisational empathy, Machacek has been turning heads on his own and when performing alongside such iconic musical forces as Terry Bozzio, Jeff Sipe, and Gary Husband.
Pete Magadini – Polyrhythm [Reissue/1976] CD (Ibis Recordings)
CD reissue of Polyrhythm which was originally released in 1976. The album features drummer Peter Magadini using polyrhythms on all six tracks from his famous books on the subject. Features a hot band with keyboardist George Duke (Frank Zappa Band), saxophones and flute by Don Menza (Buddy Rich Band), and electric bassist Dave Young (Oscar Peterson).
Magic Circle – Journey Blind CD (20 Buck Spin)
“Tunes are rude, vicious. Some lumber ominously along, bare-fisting the downbeat through riffs risen from basements held in the odors of stale beer, mold and want. Others stuff the song’s shape with directional changes—tipping a cap to Trouble and Saint Vitus via Sabbath. All the dots are easily connected.” Vinyl version due December 18.
Magic Sam Blues Band – Black Magic [Reissue/1968] CD (Delmark)
Recorded on October 23 and November 6, 1968 Black Magic was released only days before Magic Sam’s untimely passing on December 1, 1969 at 32. The album went on to win a W.C. Handy Award in the classic blues album category. This digipak deluxe edition contains more than an hour of west side Chicago blues at it’s finest, remastered from the original analog tapes. The 16-page booklet contains never before seen photos at the recording session, additional color photos from the Ann Arbor Music Festival, the original liner note from the LP and a new note by producer Bob Koester.
Malfunction – Fear Of Failure CD/LP (Bridge NIne)
“Unlike many other hardcore albums, Fear Of Failure is more than just a collection of songs. It’s a coherent entity. Opening track ‘Drained’ starts with noise that covers up a subtle guitar riff. When the noise clears and the drums kick in, Malfunction treat you to ten pieces of furious hardcore. Although Malfunction’s sound is messy, its riffs are tight as hell. Malfunction sound harder than ever. On ‘Cut Off’ a heavy breakdown is immediately followed by an even heavier one. Sometimes Malfunction leave a little room for ephemeral beauty. At the end of ‘Discontent’ a crushing riff quickly ends a melodic guitar part.” – Legends Arising
Mammatus – Sparkling Waters CD/2xLP (Spiritual Pajamas)
Heavy space rock outsiders Mammatus return with their fourth album. On Sparkling Waters, Mammatus expands upon the astral grooves and heady riffs of their previous compositions and set a course for the furthest horizon. Celestial arpeggiations of electric guitar ricochet infinitely across vast expanses of cosmic debris. Heavy riffs thunder with a rhythmic groove, like the exploding coast of Ornia spoken of in days past. Pastoral passages of mellow, slow-burning psychedelia give way to Native American flute melodies and the chanting of spiritual incantations filtered through canyons of delay. Heavenly dual guitar leads soar like a hawk gliding over a mountainside redwood canopy. Radiant synthesizers harmonize to create a shape-shifting formation of ambient space that envelops the rock and in some places completely takes over.
Månegarm – Månegarm CD (Napalm)
New album from the pagan metal band, featuring Swedish folk ballads reminiscent of campfires to wild and forceful black metal interludes.
Lee Michaels – The Complete A&M Album Collection 7xCD (Manifesto)
Lee Michaels – Heighty Hi: The Best Of Lee Michaels CD (Manifest)
Lee Michaels enjoyed a massive hit back in 1971 with “Do You Know What I Mean?”, from his fifth album, 5th, which was later than most people get to exhibit some level of success. However, the music of Lee Michaels was quite good, and so A&M Records stuck with him for seven titles, all of which have been remastered and included in the Complete A&M Album Collection: Carnival Of Life (1968), Recital (1968), Lee Michaels (1969), Barrel (1970), 5th (1971), Space And First Takes (1972), and Lee Michaels Live (1973). Heighty Hi collects 20 of his biggest hits from his A&M years.
The Nasties – Discipline CD (Sudden Death)
Churning out their brand of punk rock ’n’ roll for nearly half a decade, Guelph, Ontario’s The Nasties have quickly overtaken the world of steely, aggressive, turbocharged music. These 14 tunes range from the ’77 attitude of the title track through pelvic rocker “Plumber,” hyperactive “Sky Is Falling,” undulating “Empty Revenge” and steely, menacing “Negativity.”
Candice Night – Starlight, Starbright CD (Soulfood)
With her second solo offering, Starlight, Starbright, the Blackmore’s Night frontwoman’s vocal quality is richer than in years past, bringing you to a quiet and intimate place; a place of beauty inspired by the birth of her children, Autumn (5) and Rory (3).
Larry Novak Trio – Invitation CD (Delmark)
It’s been 50 years since the jazz pianist released his first album Larry Novak Plays! on Dot Records in 1964. He also worked with Frank Sinatra, Joe Williams, Sarah Vaughan, Carmen McRae, instrumentalists Dizzy Gillespie, Louie Bellson, Charlie Shavers, Barney Kessel and countless others. This new trio recording features Eric Hochberg, bass and Rusty Jones, drums.

Primus – Primus & The Chocolate Factory With The Fungi Ensemble CD+DVD (ATO)
Limited CD+DVD edition. Primus & The Chocolate Factory has been remixed by Les Claypool in 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound. This new edition contains an album visualizer DVD in 5.1 Dolby Surround Sound, plus Primus & The Chocolate Factory on CD. “The idea was to combine the Frog Brigade and Primus, and do this record, says Claypool. I think like a good portion of the planet, we were all pretty put off by the remake of the Willy Wonka movie — the Tim Burton version. I really wanted to pay homage to a film [1971’s Willy Wonka & The Chocolate Factory, starring Gene Wilder] that was very important to me as a kid and very influential to me musically. So that’s what we did. And as opposed to just going in and recording the songs and playing them the way they are in the film, we twisted them up a bit…twisted them up a lot. The notion wasn’t so much to go in and redo the soundtrack note for note as much as it was to utilize the classic elements of the music yet try to reflect some of the darker undertones of the Roald Dahl books, because when you read those books, there is an eerie and somewhat menacing aspect implied.”
Queen – A Night At The Odeon CD/2xLP+MP3 (Hollywood)
Queen – A Night At The Odeon [Deluxe Edition] CD+12”+DVD+Blu-ray (Hollywood)
This Hammersmith Christmas concert was the culmination of the 26-date ‘Queen invites you to A Night At The Opera’ UK tour of 1975, and was the last show of a very eventful and exciting year for Queen. By the time the band returned to Hammersmith on Christmas Eve, they were truly firing on all cylinders. No expense had been spared, from the stellar light show which lent a spectacular visual element to the night’s proceedings to the suitably lavish white Bechstein grand piano which had been hired especially for this show. Nor had the band themselves overlooked the finer sartorial details. Freddie Mercury sported two different satin cat suits – one black, one white – during the show, designed by Wendy deSmet with the singer’s input. Similarly, Freddie had painted the nails of his left hand black for the occasion, while Brian May had his (at the time) trademark white nails. Available in Regular and Deluxe editions. Deluxe Edition adds copies of the live show on DVD and Blu-ray, as well as a 12” of “Bohemian Rhapsody,” a 60-page book, and other ephemera in a lift-off lid box. Stand-alone DVD and Blu-ray editions also available.
Rio En Medio – Rio En Medio Radio CD (Womens Work)
It has been said that no person can step into the same river twice. Rio en Medio’s Danielle Stech-Homsy delivers a similar experience with her new album of inspired folk music, some covers, some originals. Shifting waters graze the shore, mesmerizing ripples evoke a myriad of images and sentiments, depending on what time of day it is or season of the year. Language itself turns fluid, as Stech-Homsy sings in English, French, Welsh and so on. Stech-Homsy’s approach is organic, with spartan baritone ukulele, guitar, cosmic keyboards and harmonizing vocals forming the backbone of the songs.
Rush – R40 Live 3xCD (Rounder)
Rush – R40 Live 3xCD+DVD/3xCD+Blu-ray (Rounder)
Rush recorded and filmed R40 Live over two sold-out shows in the band’s hometown of Toronto at the Air Canada Centre on June 17 & 19, 2015 in the middle of their R40 Live 35-date North American tour. Forty-one years in the making, the R40 Live tour took a very real journey back through time. Beginning with the grand design: a state-of-the-art stage set that pivots, rolls and dives, and brings Clockwork Angels in to bombastic, colorful life before marching stridently back in time (through theatre stages, a panoply of band and fan shots, the accrued memories of a life spent playing live) to a mocked-up school gym and the band playing there; a solitary bass amp set on the chair behind Geddy Lee, a mirror ball spiraling crazily above, casting thin rods of light like a light rain across the crowd, “Working Man” coming to a shuddering halt as the band’s beginning becomes their end. Stand-alone DVD and Blu-ray editions also available.
Shovels & Rope – Busted Jukebox: Volume 1 CD (New West)
Shovels & Rope’s Busted Jukebox: Volume 1 is a collaborative effort between the duo and their close friends. The ten song collection finds the band covering well known songs or tracks they have written or performed with other artists in the past. Collaborators include Shakey Graves, Lucius, J Roddy Walston, Butch Walker and more.
Shye Ben Tzur, Jonny Greenwood and the Rajasthan Express – Junun CD/2xLP (Nonesuch)
Junun is an album from composer/musician Shye Ben Tzur, guitarist Jonny Greenwood, and the Rajasthan Express, a group of Indian qawwali musicians. Recorded earlier this year in a makeshift studio inside the 15th-century Mehrangarh Fort in Jodhpur, India, the album was made with Radiohead’s producer Nigel Godrich, who worked with the ensemble to create this two LP/CD album. The album features Ben Tzur’s compositions, which combine ecstatic, devotional Sufi qawwal musical traditions and his native Hebrew.
The Silence – Hark The Silence CD/2xLP (Drag City)
The Silence is a storm that has been brewing across Japan for over a year. Their self-titled debut of this past spring was simply a preamble to the fluid and formidable electro-acoustic interplay that has quickly evolved since then. Hark The Silence is a powerfully jamming album containing all the musical elements that define The Silence (featuring Masaki Batoh of Ghost) in flowing and transcendent performance, all of it recorded on 24-track analogue tape, a process which brings their musical and spatial qualities into dynamic balance. Features guest spots from Damon & Naomi.
Carly Simon – Songs From The Trees (A Musical Memoir Collection) 2xCD (Elektra)
With 31 tracks spread across two discs, Songs From The Trees spans a great deal of the award-winning artist’s stellar career, from her musical debut as half of The Simon Sisters performing folk songs with her sister Lucy in Greenwich Village, to her meteoric solo career, which yielded 13 top 40 hits, including the #1 song “You’re So Vain.” The set also includes two unreleased tracks.

Slasher Film Festival Strategy – Psychic Shield CD/LP/Cassette (Foreign Sounds/Children Of The Night)
New full-length from dark electronic/synth/imaginary film score warlord Antoni Maiovvi — eleven tracks of dark synth soundscapes. TV Freaks – Bad Luck Charms CD/LP (Deranged)
With a fistful of singles and two albums behind them, Hamilton, Ontario’s TV Freaks spew up a miasma of contradictions on their third LP. Angular yet liquid, chunky but with gravy and, like a sour grape, hard to keep down—it’s aptly titled Bad Luck Charms.

Underworld – Second Toughest In The Infants [Deluxe Edition] 2xCD (UMe)
Underworld – Second Toughest In The Infants [Super Deluxe Edition] 4xCD (UMe)
Second Toughest In The Infants crackles with the frantic energy of pirate stations half tuned on FM dials; strolls through grimy cities at night, ducking between dog tracks and neon-lit all-night stores. Lyrically voyeuristic from the molten core of the dancefloor, overheard conversations hand spliced to create a strange, dizzying, unique form of music. The album, originally released in March 1996, has been remastered for the first time for a series of special editions that collect together for the first time rare singles, B-sides, remixes and unreleased studio and live tracks.

Anna von Hausswolff – The Miraculous CD (City Slang/Other Music)
“Swedish singer and organist Anna Von Hausswolff makes some of the most gloriously, ecstatically dark music of the moment. Her drawn-out, confoundingly heavy pieces draw on goth, doom metal, ambient, drone, and every other kind of music that can suck the light right out of your soul. Von Hausswolff recorded her new album The Miraculous on a massive pipe organ in the northern Swedish town of Piteå, and the whole thing just sounds alarmingly huge” – Stereogum. Vinyl due December 4.
Roger Waters – The Wall [OST] 2xCD/3xLP (Legacy)
Roger Waters’ The Wall captures his sold-out 2010-2013 The Wall Live tour, the first complete staging of the classic Pink Floyd concept album since 1990. Weather Report – The Legendary Live Tapes: 1978-1981 4xCD (Legacy)
Four discs of unreleased performances all “completely, totally, unapologetically and insanely live” recorded by the legendary jazz group from 1978 to 1981. Formed by onetime Miles Davis sidemen Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter in 1970, Weather Report defied categorization in the 15 years they recorded together. Inspired by their “electric” collaborations with Davis, Zawinul and Shorter would lead Weather Report into unpredictable territory, from free-jazz to structured but sprawling multicultural jazz-rock. Though Zawinul would reject the fusion genre the band are so often associated with “We don’t fuse nuthin’, we just play from the heart,” he once said their music would serve as a landmark for jazz revolution and evolution in the 1970s and 1980s. The addition of electric bass virtuoso Jaco Pastorius to the lineup in 1976 led to an even more energetic and daring Weather Report. A year later, drummer Peter Erskine joined the fold, creating one of the band’s most notable lineups; that lineup would expand to a quintet with the addition of percussionist Bobby Thomas, Jr. in 1980.
Leslie West – Soundcheck CD (Provogue)
New solo album from the Mountain co-founder with guest appearances by British guitarist Peter Frampton and Brian may, ex-Jeff Beck keyboard virtuoso Max Middleton, vocalist extraordinaire Bonnie Bramlett and the late great Cream bassist and longtime friend of Leslie’s, Jack Bruce. Vinyl version due December 18.

With a series of stunning backdrops making full use of the huge screens surrounding the stage and an exceptional light show this is a Who concert on a grand scale but as Pete Townshend says at the start of the show, “You’re a long way away…but we will reach you!”. He’s absolutely true to his word.
X The Jazz Destroyers X (aka X___X) – Albert Ayler’s Ghosts Live At The Yellow Ghetto CD/LP (Smog Veil)
“Albert Ayler’s Ghosts Live At The Yellow Ghetto is X__X first proper album after 37 years of existence. X__X is a no wave band formed by John D Morton (electric eels, Johnny and the Dicks) in Cleveland, Ohio in 1978. The New York Times recently featured the band explaining back in the early 1970s, with only the Stooges and the Velvet Underground as role models, [Morton] and his colleagues turned their youthful alienation into a brazenly experimental, loudly confrontational and proudly antisocial roar that forged a new and distinct style. Albert Ayler’s Ghosts Live At The Yellow Grotto is a sizzler.” — Byron Coley

An outrageous and explosive swinger that will thrill even the most hardened skeptic.

Béla Fleck: How To Write A Banjo Concerto DVD (Virgil Films And Entertainment)
Béla Fleck: How To Write A Banjo Concerto follows banjo trailblazer Béla Fleck through one of his most challenging musical journeys so far, into the world of the symphony orchestra. Béla is commissioned to compose a major banjo concerto, possibly the first of its kind, for banjo and 80-piece symphony orchestra. It begins before he has written a note, and concludes a year later, with the sold out premiere concert with the Nashville Symphony. A very intimate look at the process of composition and collaboration, How To Write A Banjo Concerto features Earl Scruggs, Chick Corea, Edgar Meyer, Chris Thile, Zakir Hussain, Abigail Washburn and other close musical friends of Béla’s. The film also digs into ‘father issues’, with Béla being named after classical composers by an absentee father. Composing this piece forces Béla to confront these issues. 96 minutes.

Pagan’s Mind – Full Circle Blu-ray+2xCD (Steamhammer)
Blu-ray edition now available. The Norwegian progressive/power metal band performs live at Center Stage.
Queen – A Night At The Odeon DVD/Blu-ray (Hollywood)
90 minutes.
Rolling Stones – From The Vault: Live In Leeds 1982 DVD+2xCD/Blu-ray+2xCD (Eagle Vision)

Rush – R40 Live DVD/Blu-ray (Rounder)
Captured with 14 cameras in full HD quality, the concert is presented in feature film style with true Dolby stereo, 5.1 surround sound, and DTS HD surround sound. 179 minutes.

Herb Alpert returns with a new album, Come Fly With Me, a mix of new Alpert originals and classic American tunes (“Come Fly With Me,” “Blue Skies,” and “Take The A Train” are just a few that are featured), performed as only the beloved trumpeter can. “With his latest recording, Come Fly With Me, legendary award-winning trumpeter, producer, artist and overall Renaissance Man, Herb Alpert takes the listener on a melody-rich, groove-embellished artistic journey, offering marvelous musical perspectives and insights with both familiar and exciting new sonic landscapes.” – All About Jazz
The Besnard Lakes – The Golden Lion 12”+MP3 (Jagjaguwar)
Three brand new tracks as a precursor to a new album due in 2016. “On ‘Golden Lion,’ Besnard Lakes focus their lush energy on a sunnier, catchier sound. Jace Lasek’s clean falsetto is more alive when paired with high-flying guitars, and alongside the band’s blanketed, nonlinear arrangements, he sounds like he’s studied the Bee Gees and Brian Wilson. But there is an ease here that Besnard Lakes haven’t experimented with. ‘You are a golden lion,’ Lasek sings, and the sweet melody is so strong that the abstract lyrics become a compliment. It’s unclear if this is a love song. As a symbol, the golden lion recalls the Tarot card of Strength, but the song’s adherence to a classic melody dissolves any doubts. If ‘Golden Lion’ isn’t about loving another person, it’s about loving the purest elements of pop.” – Pitchfork
Bestial Mouths – Down To The Bones b/w Small Prey 7” (Cleopatra)
Limited edition 7” from one of the darkest new bands featuring songs from the group’s forthcoming full-length album.

The recording was produced by Alfred Lion and engineered by Rudy Van Gelder for Blue Note.
David Bowie – Hours [Reissue/1999] LP (Friday Music)
HQ-180gm blue vinyl. 1999’s Hours, which served as David Bowie’s twenty-third solo album, harkened a return to the sounds of the Hunky Dory days.
Brightside – The World Reversed 7” (Broken World Media)

Clifford Brown – New Star On The Horizon [Reissue/1953] 10” (Blue Note)
Limited 10″ vinyl pressing of this classic 1954 release by prolific jazz trumpeter, Clifford Brown. Brown died at the age of 25 in a car accident, leaving behind only four years’ worth of recordings. Nonetheless, he had a considerable influence on later jazz trumpet players, including Donald Byrd, Lee Morgan, Booker Little, and Freddie Hubbard. He was also a composer of note. Brown won the Down Beat critics’ poll for the New Star of the Year in 1954; he was inducted into the Down Beat “Jazz Hall of Fame” in 1972 in the critics’ poll.

Butthole Surfers – Electriclarryland [Reissue/1996] 2xLP (Plain)
Originally released in 1996, Electriclarryland features the Surfers only top 40 hit with the song “Pepper”. Although the sound on this album continues the more streamlined approach they started with Independent Worm Saloon, this record is by no means mainstream, even with the hit. With pile driving rockers, pop-punk raves, acid freakouts and their demented sense of humor and bizarre perspective intact, the Surfers take no prisoners. Three sides of music with the fourth side featuring etchings by Gibby Haynes.
Nuno Canavarro – Plux Quba [Reissue/1988] LP (Drag City)
Canavarro is a favorite of Jim O’Rouke, Christoph Heemann. There are some similarities to Robert Ashley’s later work, but even that is deceiving. It is simple, gentle, melodic, amd yet completely alien. Originally released in 1988 on Ama Romanta, and reissued last in 1998 on Moikai.
John Carpenter – The Fog [OST/1980] 2xLP (Silva Screen)
John Carpenter’s 1980 follow-up film to his smash hit Halloween featured ghost sailors terrorizing a Californian coastal community as a dense fog descends on their homes. The multi-talented filmmaker’s atmospheric synthesizer score has long been a soundtrack favorite and this double album features a 20 track LP of the entire score, drawn from the original tapes, remastered by long-time Carpenter collaborator Alan Howarth on the A/B sides and the original album which featured 20 minutes of newly released music on the C/D sides. Kurt Cobain – And I Love Her b/w Sappy (Early Demo) 7” (UMe)
“Brett Morgen uncovered a great amount of previously unheard Kurt Cobain material while researching his stellar documentary, Montage Of Heck. One such song was the late Nirvana frontman’s raw, acoustic take on The Beatles’ ‘And I Love Her,’ a surprise find considering Cobain’s stated dislike for Paul McCartney, who wrote the track. Previously unknown to exist, Morgen found the recording on a random tape, and included it in his film. Now, Cobain’s haunting version is officially released as a 7” vinyl single b/w his own rarity, ‘Sappy’.” – Consequence Of Sound

Perhaps one of the most revolutionary and influential people in the canon of disco music, Cowley created his own brand of Hi-NRG dance music, “The San Francisco Sound.” This 12” was culled from the final mixed down reel for “Kickin’ In”, an epic 12-minute journey through disco that Patrick recorded in 1978.

DBUK – Songs One Through Eight LP (Virtual Label)
Among fans of the alt-county genre, the names Munly Munly, Slim Cessna, Lord Dwight Pentacost and Rebecca Vera have no doubt crossed one’s lips over the past twenty years. Alongside of their work in Slim Cessna’s Auto Club, and via labels as disparate as Alternative Tentacles and Pesanta Urfolk, this debut album is a parallel collaboration collectively known as DBUK (Denver Broncos UK). With Songs One Through Eight, Munly’s signature dark, high lonesome country folk and Cessna’s Hank Williams II country twang meet in the middle. The quartet’s bare-bones sound and unorthodox instrumentation combines traditional American folk with post-punk leanings, with a Southern Gothic sensibility that permeates both bands’ repertoires.

Disturbed – Believe [2002] LP (Reprise)
First time on vinyl for Disturbed’s second album.
Dr. Dre – Compton (A Soundtrack By Dr. Dre) 2xLP (Aftermath)
Now available on vinyl. “Musically, the album is a reminder that Dre’s palette and appetite for sound has always been eclectic, and rather than retread, we hear him pushing into new territory. At one moment, he’s sampling an obscure modern funk band from Italy (for ‘One Shot One Kill’) and the next, lifting a guitar riff from a random Turkish psychedelic burner. Throughout, session musicians polish out the edges, and Dre continues to lean on live keys and bass to fill out chunky bottom ends.” [BNM/8.8] – Pitchfork

On When Earth Lets Go the group were joined by drummer Robert Johansen, and took the step from being a “studio band” to a “live band.” The album is seen by many as a rougher edged album than Bravo, a direction Gazpacho wanted to take without repeating themselves.

Released last June on CD – now available on vinyl. Fourth album from the weirdo/spastic metalcore outfit.
Jewel – Picking Up The Pieces LP (Sugar Hill)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Jewel produced Picking Up The Pieces herself in Nashville, recruiting an A-list session band including 2014’s ACM Guitar Player of the Year Rob McNelley and frequent Neil Young collaborators like drummer Chad Cromwell as an ode to Ben Keith, with whom she worked on Pieces of You and was a staple figure in the Young world before his death in 2010. “Though evocative of her earliest years, Picking Up The Pieces is still also true to her country side, with ‘My Father’s Daughter,’ a collaboration with Dolly Parton that tells the story of Jewel’s father and grandmother, the later whom emigrated from Europe and was an aspiring opera singer. Jewel released her first country album, Perfectly Clear, in 2008, and played June Carter Cash in the Lifetime TV movie Ring Of Fire. And she’s got one heck of a mountain yodel.” – Rolling Stone

Joe LoDuca – Army Of Darkness [OST/1993] 2xLP (Mondo)
Just in time for the next chapter in the Evil Dead saga (TV series Ash Vs. The Evil Dead) Mondo is proud to release the soundtrack Sam Raimi’s Army Of Darkness. Returning along side star Bruce Campbell, is masterful composer Joe LoDuca, who also crafted the terrifying scores to the first and second Evil Dead. Like the film, LoDuca’s score to Army Of Darkness is an ambitious blending of genre that was ahead of its time.
Loma Prieta – Self Portrait LP (Deathwish)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. “Out of nowhere a couple weeks ago, I stumbled upon Loma Prieta’s song ‘Love.’ It starts with a few strummed chords that quickly give way to a snarling voice, guitars so fuzzed-out they bleed together into a pulse of noise, and heavy, urgent percussion. But in the midst of this, a thread of melody held strong, small and wiry, underneath the din. It struck me in a way a lot of heavy music does, and some cursory research revealed that Jack Shirley — a producer who is infamous in some circles for producing Deafheaven’s, similarly heavy and melodic Sunbather — was also behind the boards here. Even though I just discovered them, Loma Prieta are well-known in the Bay Area, and ‘Love’ is the lead single off the group’s fifth full-length album, Self Portrait.” – Stereogum

Jesse Malin – Outsiders LP (One Little Indian)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Born out of late night recording sessions in the Pennsylvania woods with producer Don DiLego, far from any expectations, Outsiders presents Jesse Malin in raw form. Malin himself describes it as “a record built out of optimism and disgust — one for the leavers, the believers, the hustlers and the chicken hawks who could never catch us.” The collection includes “Here’s The Situation,” featuring J Masics on guitar, and a cover of The The Clash’s “Stay Free” – especially poignant because Jesse first played it at Ryan Adam’s guitarist, Johnny McNabb’s memorial last year.
Mare Cognitum – Phobos Monolith 2xLP (Fallen Empire)
“Cold, harsh, haunting, this one-man black metal project is a melancholic space odyssey that completely bowls you over with its intricacy and layers. It has its dreamy moments of cosmic free floating with its opening track, ‘Weaving The Thread of Transcendence,’ but grounds you in reality with the introduction of the second song, ‘Entropic Hallucinations.’ Pounding beats, piano flourishes, and the hissing rasp of creator Jacob Buczarski’s vocals create the sensation of an entire other worldly orchestra. It’s Enslaved in space and is absolutely beautiful.”—Metal Sucks.

The award-winning Norwegian jazz quartet Pixel is in the vanguard of a scene brimming with exceptional young musicians, charting an exhilarating, improvisation-steeped jazz path infused with the cathartic energy of indie rock. Pixel consists of double bassist and vocalist Ellen Andrea Wang, drummer Jon Audun Baar, trumpeter Jonas Kilmork Vemøy, and saxophonist Harald Lassen (with everyone contributing vocals).
The group tends toward translucent textures, tight orchestration and pop-inflected songcraft. While the sound is essentially acoustic, Vemøy and Lassen increasingly employ subtle effects that provide deeper textural depth to the already charged mélange of bright harmonies and protean rhythmic thrust.

Sadist – Hyaena LP (Scarlet)
“Hyaena is so thoroughly permeated by its jazz influence that it often sounds like a group of jazz musicians approaching metal, as opposed to the more familiar opposite. There’s certainly a great deal of surface complexity throughout this album. First, it often favors the sort of off-beat syncopation and polyrhythm over 4/4 beat type of percussion popularized by Meshuggah and sons. Secondly, Sadist crams in a great deal of synthesizer and sample presence, including plenty of ‘tribal’ percussion that probably synergizes with the lyrical/visual aspects of this album. What begins to tip me off that this might not just be a mess of pseudo-progressive tropes is Sadist’s adept understanding of modulation and tonality – unlike many bands that play around with it, they actually manage to use this to write more flexible riffs and build some of the changes into their song structures. That is definitely not a mere surface strength.” – Death Metal Underground

Soundtrack – Thicker Than Water (A Film By Jack Johnson And The Malloys) [2003] LP (Republic)
For his Thicker Than Water soundtrack, Jack Johnson stitched together an organically focused, acoustic-centered collection that would seem as welcome on a shady creek bank as a sunny, wave-lapped beach. Johnson offers up an acoustic take of his sophomore album’s “Holes To Heaven” and the sprightly instrumentals “Moonshine” and “Cove,” while longtime associate G. Love duets on the spare, rootsy “Rainbow.” Love and band Special Sauce also contribute the even grittier instrumental “Hobo Blues” and laconic “Honor And Harmony.”

Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Silver-tongued songsmith and true American treasure Kelley Stoltz presents a 2015 collection of instant classics with just a hint more synthery than 2013’s Double Exposure. For those not yet in the fan club, Kelley is like a Ray Davies/Brian Wilson/Tom Petty power pop Cerebus from another dimension where well placed tambourines, handclaps, and wry observations are a universal language. Criminally under-appreciated, Kelley’s face should be on Amoeba-bucks for his contributions to the pop canon-the black-lipstick-smeared stand-out and lead-off track “Cut Me Baby” could be his walk-on music for the acceptance speech.

Tropic Of Cancer – Archive: The Downwards Singles 12”+MP3 (Blackest Ever Black)
Stop Suffering is first music to emerge from Camella Lobo’s Tropic Of Cancer project since her 2013 debut album, Restless Idylls. The towering, time-stopping title-track is the culmination of her work to date; rarely does an arrangement so sparse exhibit such grandeur. The three original songs from Tropic Of Cancer’s two 10”s on Downwards, The Dull Age/Victims (2009) and Be Brave (2011) (now both out of print and highly sought-after), are collected on Archive: The Downwards Singles with new artwork by Silent Editions.
