Jeff Parker & ETA IVtet – The Way Out Of Easy CD/2xLP (Nonesuch)
January 2nd, 2023. Aside from being the second of a new year, it was a pretty ordinary night at ETA in Los Angeles, where guitarist Jeff Parker – alongside his ETA IVtet with saxophonist Josh Johnson, bassist Anna Butterss, and drummer Jay Bellerose – had been holding down a regular Monday gig since 2016. At the time, nobody knew it was the first gig of the last year that ETA would be open for business. Over seven years of holding down that residency, Parker’s ETA ensemble evolved from a band that played mostly standards into a group known for its transcendent, long-form (sometimes stretching out for 45 minutes or more) journeys into innovative, often uncharted territories of groove-oriented, painterly, polyrhythmic, minimalist and mantric improvised music.

So, six years since his last LP, the all-acoustic A Broke Moon Rises, Papa M rolls into the shred zone, buns glazing, with his fifth full length in 25 years of Papa M-itude! Six fat-assed songs – a couple ballads, yeah, but mostly real all-out groovers here.

Bone white colorway. Rose Main Reading Room, the fourth full length by Peel Dream Magazine, is a lush, inviting headphones record; the kind of album made to accompany city bus rides and rainy-day solo trips to accidental destinations. The band, whose name nods to the BBC Radio 1 legend John Peel — arbiter of all things underground, quality, and (it must be said) “cool” — has since its inception been a genre-hopping experiment, jumping from motorik krautrock to shoegaze and space age pop, and their newest work is a perfect starting point for the uninitiated, beckoning toward a newfound romance and nostalgia with their catchiest collection of songs to date.

On his 2024 album, Pathways, Julian Taylor candidly captures how he approaches handling a litany of ever-lingering burdens which mirror the struggles we all experience. This relentless inner search has resulted in a collection of eight concise tracks co-produced by Taylor and Colin Linden (Emmylou Harris, Bruce Cockburn, Blackie and The Rodeo Kings), mixed by Colin Linden, and mastered by Greg Calbi. The album lays down the long, winding trail that leads its listeners toward finding their own personal zen amidst much internal discord. In Taylor’s view, three words sum Pathways up perfectly. Till Now.
Velvet Turner Group – Velvet Turner Group [Reissue/1972] LP (Org Music)
Velvert Turner is largely known for being a protégé and student of Jimi Hendrix, who he met as a teenager in New York in the late ’60s. The influence is immediately clear, with respect to both Turner’s guitar work and vocals. Some have even mistaken his only album for a “lost” Hendrix recording. Velvert Turner Group’s self-titled 1972 release, which aptly closes with a tribute to Hendrix (a cover of “Freedom”), is now back on vinyl, remastered by Dave Gardner. This reissue features an alternate mix of the first song, “Madonna (of the Seven Moons)”, as a bonus track.

Yesness – See You At The Solipsist Convention LP (Joyful Noise)
Green colorway. Even as the obstacles to meaningful connection mount into an Everest-ian hurdle, artists nevertheless find ways to bend the technologies of our days to foster visceral human connection, rather than bereft isolation. Comprised of a West Coast bassist (Kristian Dunn of El Ten Eleven) and an Appalachia-adjacent drummer (Damon Che of Don Caballero), Yesness forges a friendship mediated through the language of collaboration, all formed through emailed song sketches and text exchanges of Van Halen demos.
