November Marketing Program/ Banner/ Listening Station Titles Promoted This Week:
Dave Brubeck – Lullabies CD/LP (Verve)
In 2010 at 91 years old, Dave Brubeck recorded peerless takes on best-known children’s songs, beloved standards, and originals as a gift to his grandchildren and as his last studio recording. His playing, ingenuity and integrity, all hallmarks of great Brubeck recordings, are abundantly apparent on Lullabies. Bookended by two versions of “Brahms Lullaby”, the five originals among the covers are “Going To Sleep”, “Lullaby For Iola”, “Koto Song”, “Softly, William, Softly” and “Briar Bush”. Further tracks include “Over The Rainbow”, “Danny Boy”, “Going To Sleep”, “There’s No Place Like Home”, “A Dream Is A Wish Your Heart Makes” and “Sleep”. “Some of the melodies on this album are like those familiar songs,” says Brubeck. “Some are original pieces that I thought would appeal to a baby as well as an older generation. I hope the littlest ones will respond to this music, and that parents and grandparents will enjoy it as well.”
Heather Trost – Petrichor CD/LP (Third Man)
New Mexico-based artist Heather Trost’s new solo full-length, Petrichor, is fresh, unique, and really good. Sonically, this modern psychedelic pop music is as experimental as it is accessible. Petrichor was recorded between 2018 and 2019 by Trost and her husband Jeremy Barnes at their home studio. These seven lush, beautiful songs defy easy categorization, gleefully mixing elements from multiple genres – but it’s never to impress you or show off. You might not even notice how smart the record is until a fifth listen, a testament to how much work was put into the futuristic and shimmering sound. With Trost’s Petrichor, we have a record that sounds like the soundtrack to what might come next, on the off chance that what comes next really doesn’t suck. “Even though shit had yet to hit the fan when I wrote these songs,” Trost says, “2019 also felt like such a crazy year in terms of what was happening in the world, I felt like I needed to remind myself to have joy and love in my heart. It’s something I meditate on a lot, especially when it seems like the world is ending.”
Wynonna – Recollections CDEP (ANTI-)
The new release from the younger half of country music duo The Judds, Recollections marks both a literal and a figurative homecoming for the Grammy-winning icon, who recorded much of the collection while quarantining on her Tennessee farm in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic. Forced off the road for the first time in years, she found herself reconnecting with her roots as she sang once again for the sheer joy of it, performing a series of loose and lively covers with her husband, former Highway 101 drummer, multi-instrumentalist and producer Cactus Moser. The resulting EP is a testament not only to Wynonna’s status as a jaw dropping vocalist and electrifying frontwoman, but also a consummate interpreter of song and a dedicated student of craft. She offers her singular take on tracks by Nina Simone, Slim Harpo, John Prine, Fats Domino and the Grateful Dead here, delivering spare, entrancing performances driven by deep empathy and gut intuition. Wynonna drills down to the essence of each song, stripping back layer after layer until she’s laid bare the raw, emotional core of the music. There’s no pretense or posturing on Recollections, just pure heart and soul.

Inspired by a trip to California’s Antelope Valley, Lee comments on the title track single, “Standing amongst the vast and vibrant flowers that weren’t supposed to grow in the desert terrain, I was moved by its beauty and accurate representation of where I was at in life. Just like the flowers, I had grown in unexpected places. After experiencing a not-so-graceful and incredibly turbulent fall to rock bottom, I picked myself up and slowly grew through the pain. I felt an awful lot like these resilient little poppies that came out the other side against all odds – and I think that deserves congratulations.” [Vinyl edition due December 4.]
CDs + Vinyl:
Adulkt Life – Book Of Curses CD/LP (What’s Your Rupture)
Debut LP by London band Adulkt Life featuring Huggy Bear’s Chris Rowley, Male Bonding’s John Arthur Webb and Kevin Hendrick, and drummer Sonny Barrett. Huggy Bear led the UK’s answer to riot grrrl, inspired by the “seismic shock” of witnessing a Nation Of Ulysses performance together and galvanized by Bikini Kill drummer Tobi Vail’s germinal riot grrrl zine Jigsaw. In the 25 years since Rowley played with iconic Huggy Bear, starting a new band hasn’t felt right. But after Arthur Webb, who Rowley met while picking up records at a Rough Trade shop, asked if he wanted to play music together it “suddenly it felt super exciting.” Years later, Webb and Rowley befriended a then-teenage drummer, Barrett, now 23, who worked at a different Rough Trade location. After a mysterious letter from Rowley arrived for Sonny at the shop, Sonny finally decided to check out Huggy Bear, promptly offering to drum in Adulkt Life. Love Tractor – Love Tractor [Reissue/1982] CD/LP (Happy Happy Birthday To Me)
In 1982, Athens, Georgia’s Love Tractor introduced themselves with their eponymous debut album. Their sound fit in nicely with their comrades in their soon-to-be-famous local scene. The jangly bits remind of R.E.M., while their new wave melodies recall Pylon and The B-52s. Yet Love Tractor differed, thanks to their instrumental-only arrangements. The album has been lovingly remixed by David Barbe and Bill Berry, expanded with a bonus track, and features liner-notes from R.E.M.’s Mike Mills, The B-52’s Kate Pierson, and noted writer/journalist Anthony DeCurtis.

The brothers were catapulted to international stardom when they started recording together in 1977, but by this point Aaron had spent the last 17 years building up a substantial catalogue of quality soul and funk. Much of this had been recorded under Allen Toussiant’s guidance for Joe Banashak’s Minit and Instant labels or for Toussaint and Marshall Sehorn’s Sansu Enterprises.
Novo Amor – Cannot Be, Whatsoever CD/LP (All Points)
Ali Lacey contemplates a past soundtracked by songs of quiet hope and longing. “I can still see the lake upstate when I picture Birthplace, the songs sheltered by this place I’ve romanticized that doesn’t actually exist anymore. These new songs feel immediate and noisy in comparison, almost optimistic. If Birthplace is the countryside, then Cannot Be, Whatsoever is the city.
Opening Performance Orchestra/Bill Laswell/Iggy Pop – The Acid Lands CD/LP (Sub Rosa)
The Acid Lands, created by the Prague-based Opening Performance Orchestra, was first heard in public in 2014 at the Movement-Sound-Space festival in Ostrava, to mark the centenary of William S. Burroughs’s birth. The piece was performed live by Opening Performance Orchestra and their guests, the theremin player Martina Potucková, and the poet, musician, and performer Pavel Z as the narrator. The studio version of The Acid Lands was made in late 2019/early 2020 in collaboration with Bill Laswell and Iggy Pop, who undertook the role of the narrator. The piece, which pays tribute to William S. Burroughs, features fragments from the novels The Western Lands (1987) and Junkie (1953). Pole – Fading CD/2xLP (Mute)
The exploration of one’s own history relates to the inspiration for Pole’s new record Fading. “The album was mostly inspired by the idea of memory loss,” explains Stefan Betke. “My mum had dementia and I saw her losing all the memory that she had accumulated over her 91 long years. When losing that memory, it turned into what she was probably like in the beginning of her life when she was born – like an empty box.” A concept album this is not however. The role of memory loss was simply a springboard for Betke, an idea for the Berlin based artist to further explore through sound. This approach gave Betke the opportunity to reconnect with his own memory and past. “You can hear some little pops and glitches in the background of this recording, which is a direct reference to the trilogy,” he says. “But you hear it relatively quietly in the background, this is a little bit of a sign from me, as my history is fading away slowly too.” Due to the multifaceted nature of Betke, the end result is an album that feels as suited for immersive headphone listening as it does to being pummeled out through a PA loud enough to feel the bass rattle your ribcage.
PUP – This Place Sucks Ass CDEP/12” (Rise)
After recording their acclaimed 2019 album, Morbid Stuff, PUP was left with a handful of songs that didn’t make the final tracklist, largely because they were too frenetic or too unhinged. And for an album that fantasized about the world exploding, that’s saying a lot. Like all of their material, This Place Sucks Ass is a document of the band PUP is – at times thoughtful and introspective and at other times wildly cathartic.
Pylon – Gyrate [Reissue/1980] CD/LP (New West)
Pylon – Chomp [Reissue/1983] CD/LP (New West)
Pylon – Pylon Box 4xLP (New West)
In the late 1970’s Athens, Georgia was buzzing with a raw but sophisticated music scene. Traditional southern rock had been the Georgia musical export for years before but the turn of the decade began producing new sounds from bands like the B-52’s, R.E.M. and alt rock luminaries, Pylon. Before they were a band, Pylon were art-school students at the University of Georgia: four kids invigorated by big ideas about art and creativity and society. Pylon was less a band, however, and more of an art project, which meant they had very specific goals in mind as well as an expiration date. While their time together as a band was short lived (1979-1983), Pylon had a lasting influence on the history of rock and roll. Throughout their brief history, they were able to create influential work that would help foster the post-punk and art-rock scene of the early ‘80s. Artists like R.E.M., Gang of Four, Sonic Youth, Sleater-Kinney, Interpol, Deerhunter and many more claim inspiration from the band. [Pylon Box (CD edition due next year) is a comprehensive look at the band and features their studio LPs Gyrate and Chomp, both of which have been remastered from their original tapes, the 11-song collection Extra which includes rarities and 5 previously unreleased studio and live recordings, as well as Razz Tape, Pylon’s first-ever recording: a 13-song unreleased session that pre-dates the band’s seminal “Cool” b/w “Dub” debut.]

Freud’s process of therapy was famously labeled the ‘Talking Cure’ – through the act of conversation participants received cathartic relief. Lead singer/songwriter Josh Loftin explains that he used the songs to “work through a mental breakdown,” and that for him “writing is like solving a mystery.” The 11 track LP provides an honest and intimate portrait into this process of self-examination, covering themes of anxiety, depression, love, sex, isolation, fear and failure. Donovan Woods – Without People CD (Meant Well LLC)
For his new album, Without People, Donovan Woods explains: “Anything but protest music feels out of place right now. In the middle of a pandemic, as the truth of our environmental devastation sinks in, in the thick of protests reshaping our thoughts on policing and crystallizing the reality of white supremacy at work in all corners of our society, it feels silly to write about relationships. I was thinking about that when the title Without People came to me. It made me think about the intrusion of real life, other people’s needs and opinions into our internal worlds. It made me think about life as a series of lessons that all seem to be about learning to cope without people you love. And it made me think about how beautiful the world could be without us, and how we’re perhaps the first generation to consider that notion as a real possibility.” [Vinyl edition due November 27.]
Fat Tony – Exotica LP+MP3 (Carpark)
Recently released on CD – limited colored vinyl pressing now available. Storytelling isn’t merely a vehicle for self-expression, it’s a mode of transportation. A two-way mirror in which we process gilded dreams and grotesque nightmares, the transgression of cultural taboos and the upholding of ancient tradition. It’s also the animating idea behind much of the greatest popular music ever made. Consider Exotica, the new album from Houston iconoclast, Fat Tony, the latest brilliant entry in that fabled tradition, what Outkast once described as “shooting game in the form of story rapping.” While hip-hop supplies the foundation of the Third Ward native’s assault on genre, his futuristic soundclash encompasses seductive velour soul, lecherous French chansons, florescent new wave, and even splashes of African pop and reggae; the latter two being the residual effect of Tony’s Nigerian heritage and a sojourn to Jamaica to record the album.
Norman Feels – Norman Feels [Reissue/1973] LP (Tidal Waves Music)
Over the years, Norman Feel’s songs have been sampled by renowned acts from the likes of Ghostface Killah, Nas and Kanye West. The sound his songs emit reminds of the classic soul coming out of New Jersey at the time, but it just has that extra thing going for it… something alternative and exceptional. In 1973 Norman Feels released his self-titled debut album which has become a much sought after funk/soul classic. Behind Norman’s floating (and extremely soulful) voice hides a dark and almost psychedelic instrumentation that makes this album particularly unique.

Henry Grimes Trio – The Call [Reissue/1966] LP (ESP-Disk’)
For The Call Grimes, teamed with highly original clarinetist Perry Robinson (as label owner Bernard Stollman has noted, a virtuoso who merits far wider recognition… and this recording reflects both of their contributions, in equal measure) and stalwart drummer/ESP-Disk’ regular Tom Price. As a bassist, Grimes’s melodic style is well up to the task of being co-equal voice with a horn, resulting in a thoughtful and texturally rewarding LP with a level of quality far above the rote sideman session cliché, and far away from equally clichéd ideas of unrelentingly full-bore free jazz.

Sigur Rós front man Jón Jónsi Birgisson released his debut album Go in 2010. Jónsi initially though he would be making a low key, acoustic album until, as he says, somewhere along the line, it just sort of exploded. That explosion resulted in sheer aural fireworks. Not a straight ahead pop record, nor rock, folk, ambient or electronic, it encompasses all of these to create an expansive musical palette that’s been brought to life by Jónsi alongside a number of free-spirited collaborators including the Philip Glass protégé Nico Muhly and the percussive genius of Samuli Kosminen.

It is abundantly clear that McCarthy is a force to be reckoned with as one of New York’s finest young pianists.
Mekbuda – Convincing Delusional LP (Ubiquity)
Mekbuda, translated from Arabic is the lion’s folded paw as well as a star in the constellation of Gemini and in this case Russia’s preeminent entry into the burgeoning contemporary jazz scene with their debut album Convincing Delusional. Residing on the spacier and cosmic side of the jazz spectrum, the quartet consists of Roman Zyryanov on drums, Dmitry Rubanov on bass, Alex Petrov on Rhodes and keys, rounded out by Igor Shilov on trumpet. Informed by the UK’s jazz and electronic scene, spiritual and modal jazz, along with ambient and a tinge of hip-hop, Mekbuda’s sound is a heady brew of instrumental soundscapes.

The powerful rock-punk vibe of the whole set gives us hope for a better world to come.
Aquiles Navarro & Tcheser Holmes – Heritage Of The Invincible II LP (International Anthem)

Featuring both traditional and original material, Nickel Creek showcases the band’s unique style as well as their deft songwriting skills. The first-ever reissue of Picks & Lighters’ 1997 private-press LP TVA/Starvation, two sides of tumbling lo-fi guitars-and-drums improvisation that stumbles across the under-explored territory that lies between the rough minimalism of early Terry Riley and the protean drone of Hill Country blues.

Linda Ronstadt had appeared in a Broadway production of The Pirates of Penzance and had recorded an album of standards entitled Keeping Out Of Mischief, produced by Jerry Wexler. In the end, Ronstadt opted to cancel the album’s release because she wasn’t happy with how it had turned out, but since she still had an album to fulfill her contract, she returned to the studio with Asher, who she’d worked with previously, and knocked out another album that was – more or less – in line with the material she’d been releasing in the ’70s.

Satan – Early Rituals LP (Listenable)
In the 1980s, legendary UK heavy metal band Satan made three different demos which were distributed on cassette tape format. The songs on each demo give the listener a broad indication of where the band was at both artistically and technically. What’s interesting about this release is that it features three different singers and three different drummers. SKÁLD – Vikings Memories LP (Decca)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Vikings Memories is about the importance of ancestral heritage. It is an invitation to listen to messages from the past to build the future. SKÁLD is inspired by the Doggerland, which is an island that disappeared 20,000 years ago following various natural disasters (tsunami, long winter…). The Vikings tell here the history of the people who preceded them and question the role of man for saving the planet. The sound of SKÁLD is created through two contrasting voices: Justine Galmiche’s warm yet powerful tone, combined with the guttural, vibrant resonance of Pierrick Valence. They work closely with producer-composer Christophe Voisin-Boisvinet, who uses a broad palette of instruments to immerse the listener in an extraordinary musical world. There is an array of percussion alongside stringed instruments, like the nyckelharpa or skáldharpa – which was specially conceived for the group. Underpinning the sounds are arrangements which draw on world music and Celtic influences, with rousing orchestrations.
The Sonder Bombs – Modern Female Rockstar LP (Take This To Heart)
Blending together the folksy and the fiery can be cartoonish if not executed properly. On paper, adding a ukulele to a pop-punk band’s arsenal seems like an eyebrow-raising proposition, calling to mind the hair-teasing days of MySpace’s stronghold over alternative music rather than today’s heart-rending version of the same genre. Luckily for The Sonder Bombs, the uke enhances the band’s self-assured humor and balance, creating a dynamic, nuanced counterpoint to frontwoman Willow Hawks’ acrobatic vocals and shimmering guitars. Limited translucent purple vinyl LP pressing.
The Spits – VI LP (Thriftstore)
Ripping through a portal from the basements of Kalamazoo, MI, The Spits’ new album IV ranges from the weird to the wild. Buzz saw guitars and catchy hooks are mixed with low budget horror effects to create a unique view of a dystopian world.
