AIMS Marketing Program/ Featured Titles Promoted This Week:
mxmtoon – liminal space CD/LP (Turtle Girl)
Since she was 17 years old, mxmtoon has made exquisitely catchy pop songs that capture the kind of complex and tender feelings we often keep hidden from the world. Now 24, mxmtoon found her relationship to songwriting profoundly transformed in the making of her third album liminal space, a body of work informed by a period of major upheaval and uncertainty in her family life. When met with a bigger and bolder sound threaded with elements of country and folk and indie-rock—achieved thanks to her all-female lineup of collaborators—the result is an up-close exploration of what she sums up as “the messy, dark, complicated, and also very beautiful chaos inherent in mother-daughter relationships.” [A galaxy marble green color vinyl pressing is available.]
Charie Parker – Bird In Kansas City CD/LP (Verve)
This new set of rare Charlie Parker recordings dating from between 1941-1951, most of them never having been heard before and some never even having been known to exist, chronicle Bird’s evolution from a blossoming soloist with the Jay McShann Band into a brilliant improviser who dominated the jazz landscape for decades to come. In addition to two unreleased 78s with the McShann band, this set offers two sets of private recordings made with local musicians and a very relaxed-sounding Parker.
Alan Sparhawk – White Rose, My God CD/LP (Sub Pop)
Alan Sparhawk of Low’s solo debut for Sub Pop is at once a bold new, electro-pop-infused adventure, and an extension of the innovation and experimentation that drove his work as a member of Low. It is his first album since the tragic 2022 loss of his wife and partner in Low, Mimi Parker. Recorded primarily by Alan at his home, with additional work and mixing by co-producer and young Minneapolis musician Nat Harvie. [A crystal-clear vinyl pressing is available.]
State Champs – State Champs CD/LP (Pure Noise)
State Champs surges with the energy of The Finer Things (2013), Around The World And Back (2015), and Living Proof (2018). It expands on the Kings Of Tthe New Age (2022) blueprint. That beloved post-pandemic album proved the band will survive. State Champs now sees them thrive. Songs like “Silver Cloud,” “Clueless,” “Sobering,” “Tight Grip,” “I Still Want To,” and “Golden Years” explode with high-energy, passionate, and smartly constructed precision. While big, bold, and slick, the production nevertheless sounds like a band in a room together or decimating the stage. [Multiple vinyl colorways are available, including indie store exclusive clear w/ white splatter.]

Washed Out – Notes From A Quiet Life CD/LP (Sub Pop)
The music of Washed Out has always levitated over a timeless frontier. You can sense it in his immersive, amorphous vocals, the expansive soundscapes, the wistful storytelling. It’s a sweet spot where, says its creative force, Ernest Greene, “any sort of association or memory from the past can transport you instantly. I love that.” Greene’s transcendent output has earned him the moniker of “Godfather of Chillwave” by Pitchfork and a co-sign from Portlandia, which borrowed his track, “Feel It All Around,” for its utopian theme song. His latest, Notes From A Quiet Life arrives after delivering more than a decade of distinct and disparate creative re-imaginations at a remarkably high level (five albums, two EPs). Notes is bold in its intuitiveness: Greene has left the treadmill of music-as-a-business, instead letting his artistic interests lead the way. “Each album,” says Green, who also paints and sculpts, “is a world-building exercise.” [A honeydew melon green color vinyl pressing is available.]
Suki Waterhouse – Memoir Of Sparklemuffin CD/LP/Cassette (Sub Pop)
Suki Waterhouse’s music sounds like a collage of her inspirations, experiences, and emotions stitched together by honeyed vocal delivery, bright-eyed melodies, and evocative storytelling. It doubles as a mirror image of her life as a consummate creative, artist, actress, model, and mother, yet it also breaks the glass to unveil raw truth. She leans on an ever-evolving sonic palette to convey what she’s feeling—whether it be folky Americana, ‘90s alternative, turn-of-the-century indie, or handcrafted otherworldly pop. You’ll hear Suki’s longing in a swooning chorus, fearlessness in a crunchy chord, elation in a danceable waltz, and wonder in a soft coo befitting of a lullaby. [A clear vinyl pressing is available.]

Various Artists – Like Someone I Know: A Celebration Of Margo Guryan CD/LP (Sub Pop)
Most of our stories about cult musicians who make an album or two and then seem to vanish are framed by grief, despair, and frayed ambition. Not so with Margo Guryan, an ardent jazz anomaly who disdained pop music until hearing “God Only Knows” in 1966, opening a window onto the wonders that form could contain. Only two years later, she released her own set of little pop symphonies, Take A Picture, to great praise and expectation. But, having already divorced the hard-gigging valve trombonist Bob Brookmeyer, she declined to tour or even talk about it all that much, content even if her reticence meant Take A Picture was soon consigned to discount racks and cutout bins. Now, a dozen artists-none of whom were born when Take A Picture was made, most of whom weren’t even born for a crucial early reissue by Franklin Castle-have reinterpreted and reimagined that entire album (plus one bonus track) for Like Someone I Know: A Celebration Of Margo Guryan. Empress Of, Margo Price, Clairo, June McDoom: They all affirm Guryan’s sharpness as a songwriter and the brilliance of an album that has far outstripped whatever promotional cycle Guryan rejected so long ago.

Buffalo Tom – Birdbrain [Reissue/1990] LP (Beggars Banquet)
Buffalo Tom – Big Red Letter Day [Reissue/1993] LP (Beggars Banquet)
From the first notes of Buffalo Tom’s second album, Birdbrain, it was clear the band had done more than their share of growing up since their self-titled debut, which had come out the year before. The title cut leaps out of the gate with a tight snap that leaves anything on the first album in the dust; drummer Tom Maginnis and bassist Chris Colbourn sound far tighter and more unified as a rhythm section, and guitarist and vocalist Bill Janovitz reveals a taut, slashing authority that was quite a change from the sloppy, sometimes meandering sound he’d summoned up his first time at bat. Just as roadwork had firmed up Buffalo Tom’s sound, their songwriting was also steadily improving. Big Red Letter Day found the band doing what they do very well indeed, but with more body and gloss to the production.

Written in a period of significant life change – namely, a move back to his native Toledo – To Dream Of Something Wicked finds Mat Kerekes filtering his unflinchingly honest songwriting through the lens of bittersweet nostalgia. The familiar locale of his hometown helped him settle back into a place of comfort, inviting some trusted voices into the process: Kerekes’ uncle added guitar, bass and melodica, while his brother Chris was a key songwriting partner. While 2023’s You Look Like A Stranger took a more maximalist, production-rich approach, Something Wicked strips back Kerekes’ craft to its bare essentials, elevating the visceral emotions at the heart of his songwriting.

Pique is the sensational debut solo album from Dora Morelenbaum, one of the key talents spearheading Brazil’s new musical wave. A member of the Latin Grammy award-winning band, Bala Desejo, Dora showcases a new side to her solo productions on this special LP. Whereas Dora’s first solo EP, Vento de Beirada, was a leap of faith, Pique sees her soaring as one of Brazil’s standout stars, emboldened, emphatic but ever elegant. Building bridges between past and present, it’s a funkier, more groove-based affair, weaved together with those signature, slower, celestial tracks. Touching on disco, MPB, soul, R&B and jazz, the album is enriched with an indie pop aesthetic courtesy of fellow Brazilian star and co-producer, Ana Frango Elétrico. Roedelius – 90 4xLP (Groenland)
90 is in no way intended as the exhaustive retrospective of the oeuvre of an important artist (this can, and should, be done in the coming years by someone more qualified than me.) The actual chronology of these pieces, and in some cases who might have collaborated with Achim on them, remain a mystery. But the historical context of this music is undeniably compelling—it doesn’t feel like hyperbole to suggest that these cascading, hypnotic cycles equal the best of contemporaries like Terry Riley, working half a world away on their own minimal masterpieces. For now, a celebration is sufficient—the portrait of an extraordinary life at 90, narrated in beautiful, intimate, innovative music.

The complexities of love – and the paradoxes that come with it – are the focus of Sir’s most personal and confessional project to date, his new album Heavy. Created while he was at one of his lowest points, the album’s title track, “Heavy” is both a cry for help and an intoxicating expression of ecstasy.
The Smashing Times – Mrs. Ladyships and The Cleanerhouse Boys LP (K.)

I’ve never seen an orchestra who is so versatile in being able to play classical and also groove based music. I knew that we’d be able to capture something really special if I utilized them alongside my band. When writing this album I knew that the hard hitting groove and funk elements needed to be represented, but in a new and unique way that I’ve not been able to explore on past projects.”
