Onyon – Last Days On Earth CD/LP (Trouble In Mind)
New release from the German post-punk band. The oddball, synth-soaked world of Onyon is disorienting at first – the band’s herky-jerky rhythms may operate in a familiar fashion to bands like Devo, or LITHICS, but Maria Untheim’s woozy synth squiggles populate & punctuate the band’s songs, flirting with the primitive cool of ‘80s minimal-synth and the wire-haired cretinism of ‘60s garage. Limited color vinyl pressing. After the demise of Teenage Jesus and the Jerks, Lydia Lunch launched her solo career with Queen Of Siam, arguably her greatest LP. In true No Wave style, the album is a mishmash of irritants, but her palette is far broader here, lurching from slow dirges, excessive feminist exhortations, and raucous personal purges to a touch of disco and lounge music exoticism, as conjured by Voidoids/Lou Reed guitarist Robert Quine, Contortions bassist Jack Ruby, and John Cale’s drummer, Douglas Browne. Spirited, surprisingly broad and defiantly dissonant, Queen Of Siam’s dense layers were designed to provoke and inflame; listen closely to fully decode.
Masters At Work – Boyd’s Jam 12” (MAW)
Masters At Work – Funky Anané / MAW Want You 12” MAW)
This release entails the story of a special studio session by one of the NY house pioneers who brought you “The Music’s Got Me” by Visual along with his partner Timmy Regisford back in 1982. His name is Boyd Jarvis (RIP), a keyboard genius, also one of the early creators of this unique sound. Masters At Work had only a few rare sessions in the early ‘90s with Boyd and the outcome are some of these stunning outtakes on ‘Boyd’s Jam’ produced by MAW. Meanwhile, Funky Anané brings forth the genius Kenny Dope layered, thick beats, syncopated snares, with thumpin’ kicks and snaps to compliment the Louie Vega walking bassline and deep organ / clarinet sounds playing chords. From the archives we pulled this track out noticing the new parts never heard along with the vocal sample which was actually Anané s first time in the studio with Masters At Work behind the mic back in 1996.
Masters At Work – The Ha Drop 7” (MAW)
The original 1991 house track received newly updated remixes by the resurrected Masters At Work that were released on 12” vinyl in early 2023. This 7” release features a pair of 7” edits of those Masters at Work remixes for this special 7” release. FYI, this is *the song* you have probably seen/heard in every single Tik Tok video of a vogue/ballroom dance scene.

From start to finish, the album fills your senses with powerful melodic bursts of energy and an overall sincerity that is impossible to feign. This is truly a powerful album created by one of the most talented young bands around; Stories And Alibis is sure to evoke a response from every sector of your emotional spectrum.

Matchbox Twenty – More Than You Think [Reissue/2002] 2xLP (Atlantic)
Matchbox Twenty – North [Reissue/2012] LP (Atlantic)
Following the stunning success of their explosive debut, the 2000 follow-up Mad Season‘s soul-infused collection of modern classics demonstrated the band’s remarkably expressive range and power. Having further honed their craft through extensive touring, Matchbox Twenty grew into a creative musical machine, firing on all cylinders. [New colorways of each title are available.]
Meat Beat Manifesto – Satyricon [Reissue/1992] LP (PIAS America)
Meat Beat Manifesto – Subliminal Sandwich [Reissue/1996] 2xLP (PIAS America)
A Meat Beat Manifesto album is a special thing since it usually manages to encompass the styles of other acts while still having a distinct voice of its own. Satyricon features the sample-trippy goofiness of the Orb, the sharp, rock-flavored house of the Chemical Brothers, the streamlined trance of Orbital, and the well-oiled angst of Nine Inch Nails, and that’s just for starters. Long-term frontman Jack Dangers truly has a producer’s ear, which gives his blend of dance music a considerable advantage: he takes a musician’s approach into a programmer’s territory, and his use of vocals upgrades a song’s impact rather than diminishes it. That said, 1996’s Subliminal Sandwich is an underrated classic of mid- ‘90s big beat/EBM.
Menlou – Mooshine (7” Edits) 7” (MAW)
The original 1995 house track produced by Louie Vega & Kenny ‘Dope’ Gonzalez received newly updated remixes by the resurrected Masters At Work that were released on 12” vinyl in early 2023. This 7” release features a pair of 7” edits of those Masters At Work remixes.

Morella’s Forest – Morella’s Forest LP (Lost In Ohio)
Morella’s Forest was a different band in 1996. After writing and recording their debut the year before (the fuzzed-out shoegaze classic Super Deluxe), MoFo hit the road, touring with Starflyer 59, and playing the summer festival circuit. They returned home to Dayton tighter than ever and with a distinct musical identity, reflected in the eleven songs that would become their sophomore release Ultraphonic Hiss. The band headed to Chicago’s Playground Studio to record with Keith Cleversley (known for his work with The Flaming Lips, Mercury Rev and HUM), whose influence can be heard clearly. Gone are the extended bouts of feedback and layers of distorted guitar, traded instead for a collection of ’90s indie pop gems, wrapped in dreamy guitar reverberations and topped with Sydney’s lilting vocals. The music press took note of Morella’s Forest’s refined sound (and candy-themed song titles), with College Music Journal calling the album “awfully hard to resist” while Dayton Voice was hypnotized.
Munya – Jardin LP (Luminelle Recordings)

Expanding on the shoegaze-shaded emo that made Parannoul’s To See the Next Part of the Dream so beloved by lo-fi and indie rock fans alike, After the Magic sees the anonymous auteur striving to write a follow-up as worthy of acclaim as the last.

[A translucent purple/pink colorway is available.]
Slint – Spiderland [Reissue/1991] LP (Touch And Go)
Dark blue colorway. Produced by Brian Paulson at River North Recorders in Chicago and released by Touch And Go Records in April of 1991, the six songs on Spiderland methodically mapped a shadowy new continent of sound. The music is taut, menacing, and haunting; its structure built largely on absence and restraint, on the echoing space between the notes, but punctuated by sudden thrilling blasts of unfettered fury. It is a sound that no one had heard before and that no one will ever forget. The eerie, now-iconic black and white cover photo of the four-band member’s heads breaking the surface of the water was taken by their friend Will Oldham.
Snog – Lies Inc. [Reissue/1993] 2xLP (Metropolis)
30 years ago, Snog’s Lies Inc. album changed the face of industrial and electronic music forever. Satirical, sarcastic, nihilistic, darkly humorous and yet all too human, global hits like “Corporate Slave”, “Shop” and “Born To Be Mild” presented humanity in the blackest of velvet black mirrors. Originally released in Germany in 1992 on the Machinery label (and in the US and Australia in 1993), “Corporate Slave” would become a global alternative dancefloor phenomenon and the “Shop” remixes ironic chart hits on three continents. Snog has carved their own uniquely and charmingly dystopian career since, with recent albums Lullabies For The Lithium Age and Eight Offerings For the Undead being obvious highlights.
The Sound – Larger Than Life: Live At Paradiso, Amsterdam, March 8th 1981 – FM Broadcast
CD/LP (Dear Boss)
Although they released six albums in their lifetime, The Sound, who formed in early 1979 and broke up in late 1987, were undervalued in their own country, always attracting only a small audience. 200 miles away from their native South London and across the North Sea in the Netherlands, The Sound, however, had a fanatical following, regularly filling out 2000 capacity venues and at one point in the early ’80s outselling both U2 and Echo and The Bunnymen there. This performance was recorded at the Amsterdam Paradiso on the March 8th, 1981, on the last night of the band’s four-date first Dutch tour. [A limited-edition yellow color vinyl pressing is available.]

The joint effort has received unanimous praise, landing a spot-on Complex’s coveted 2020 year-end best albums list. Cooks was also named one of Billboard’s top-15 2021 hip-hop and R&B artists-to-watch. [A deluxe color vinyl pressing is available.]

Errol Stubbs – Turning It Out [Reissue/1986] LP (Tidal Waves Music)
Armed with little more than his Peavy T-60 guitar and a Jumbo Fuzz pedal, Errol Stubbs and his bar-band cohorts cranked out a self-released tape of funked-up disco soul in 1986. With no label or distribution to speak of, Errol would simply put on his best suit and sell the cassettes by hand. The tape languished into obscurity… until now.

Justin Walter – Destroyer LP (Kranky)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. The music of Justin Walter veers between nebulous and numinous, coaxed from the translucent tonalities of his signature instrument, the EVI (Electronic Valve Instrument). Destroyer, his latest, and third for Kranky, marks his most multifaceted work yet. Inspired by minimalistic urges (evading grandiosity, condensing scope, embracing spatial restraint) tempered with the drama of triptychs (becoming, destruction, aftermath), the album’s eleven tracks thread a keening suite of aching, opaque beauty, traced in absence and breath.

She played many of the instruments herself, with additional contributions from drummer Matt McCaughan (Bon Iver), guitarists Seth Kauffman (Angel Olsen) + Jake Lenderman (Wednesday, MJ Lenderman), and bassist Dave Hartley (The War On Drugs).
