Under the Weather follows Sagar’s life and the depression that consumed him in 2019 – after a brief album intro, it jumps right into “Feel Better”, a reflection on attempting to buck up when the weather outside is grim. The album is hazy and moody, the pace slow as syrup, and from beginning to end, a fog falls over every synth and guitar line.

- Scott Fitzgerald’s The Great Gatsby was a work so filled with ambition, yearning, and inner contradictions that it came to represent the condition of a nation itself. Yet, at its core, the slim novel tells a story about people and, more often than not, their inability to communicate and connect. In 2018, composer/producer Frank Maston was living in Paris, working on new music when he was introduced to Geneva based band L’Eclair. Blown away by what he heard, there seemed to be a mutual understanding and appreciation for that loungey, groovy world of library and soundtrack music from the seventies. An immediate thought occurred to him – what if he could record with this simpatico group backing him up? The result is the colorful and kinetic album Souvenir.

At Home with Southern Culture On The Skids consists of 11 tracks recorded and mixed in Rick Miller’s living room with some additional tracks recorded at his studio, The Kudzu Ranch. The songs on the album are a combination of the band’s unique mix of musical genres: rock & roll, surf, folk, and country, all a bit off-center, what Rick proudly calls “our wobbly Americana.” Rick goes on, “We put a few more acoustic guitars on this one, as you would expect if you recorded in your living room, but it still rocks like SCOTS. So put your headphones on, get in your favorite chair/sofa/recliner, put on At Home with Southern Culture On The Skids and let’s hang out for a while.”

We Were Promised Jetpacks – Enjoy The View CD/LP (UK Big Scary Monster)
Since releasing 2018’s The More I Sleep The Less I Dream, We Were Promised Jetpacks’ Adam Thompson, Sean Smith and Darren Lackie have embraced change head-on. Amicably parting ways with guitarist Michael Palmer, leaving a notable empty fourth corner in their practice room, it marked a transitory moment in the band’s acclaimed career, and one that would be cemented by events to come. Entering 2020 as a trio with a handful of songs written and a small tour under their belts, the world around them came to a sudden halt. Yet despite the unquestionable hardship that the lockdown brought with it, for a band looking to rebuild following a dramatic change, it also proved to be a blessing in disguise. The result, Enjoy The View, is the product of a more settled band. Fifteen years into their career, the trio is more focused than ever.

Chet Faker – Hotel Surrender LP (BMG)
At the top of 2020, after a year of traversing the globe in support of 2019’s Run Fast Sleep Naked, Nick Murphy began creating music that simply felt good. Though the singer had retired his billion streaming Chet Faker project four years prior, the new songs he was working on in his New York City studio had an energy reminiscent of his earlier work. Reviving the project wasn’t on my radar at the time, Murphy admits, but the next thing he knew, he had a full album. The result is Hotel Surrender, a radiant 10-track LP full of swaggering bass lines and electrifying melodies that reintroduces Chet Faker to the world – and to Murphy himself.
Anne Clark – Changing Places [Reissue/1983] LP (Flying Dolphin Administration)
Changing Places, with its new wave classic “Sleeper In Metropolis”, marked the final commercial breakthrough for the exceptional artist from England. Driving and gloomy wave rhythms, paired with exceptionally delivered philosophical lyrics. David Harrow (Jah Wobble/On-U Sound Collective) and Vini Reilly (The Durutti Column) each lend instrumentation to the album.

Pan Daijing – Jade LP (Pan)
White color vinyl pressing. Developed for full casts of opera singers and dancers and reaching for an all-encompassing durational experience of intensity for both performer and audience, the development of these works was for Daijing as emotionally disarming as it was thrilling. In order to continue accessing her own limits, Daijing had to develop a place of sanctuary within her own practice. It’s nine tracks written and recorded over the last three years, Jade is the sound of solitary release and refuge, of creative self-sustenance.

Sung mostly in Creole, their 2018 debut album, Mo Jodi, was called a hurricane of heavy blues, ferocious and liberating, and a sound cast between Tinariwen and Black Keys. John Dwyer / Ryan Sawyer / Peter Kerlin – Moon-Drenched LP (Castleface)
The same crew as the boundary pulsing improvisation record Bent Arcana has made a trajectory shift and picked up Ben Boye along the path. The aptly named Moon-Drenched is the second installment from these sessions and keeps a heavy-lidded late-night perspective on things as it eases from the somewhat familiar liminal twilight of skittering hues of black-blue and snaking street groove, to fizzing off into the ether in pursuit of lunar prism beams heretofore unseen. The more rhythmically dialed bits here have a lysergic halo of strangeness to them, and the wispy bits between are spun of iridescent gossamer. It sounds like a frizzled message from a future just filthy with guitar hoots echoing off neon-splattered high rises, oil-slicked waterways and skittering digital beasts. [CD edition due September 24.]

Ryan Patterson has spent over two-and-a-half decades adding to Louisville’s legacy with his impassioned and activist-minded approach to punk, his rigorous work ethic in the local music scene, his distinctive graphic design work, and his contributions to nearly every aspect of DIY culture. After twelve years fronting the forward-thinking art-inflected punk outfit Coliseum, Patterson looked to the urban centers of London, New York, and Berlin for new sonic inspiration, drawing from the passion of his hardcore roots while tapping into the sounds of classic EBM and post-punk artists for Fotocrime. On his third full-length Heart Of Crime, Patterson continues to explore what he refers to as “electric Southern romanticism.” It’s an album that throbs with pulsing synths, hammering drum machines, and economic guitar hooks.

John Grant – Boy From Michigan 2xLP (Partisan)
John Grant has established himself as one of the great musical chroniclers of the American Dream, angled mostly from its flip side – from those who did not thrive. Grant stopped being a boy in Michigan at 12, when he moved to Denver, shifting rust to bible belt, a further vantage point to watch collective dreams unravel. “I quickly learned all about the American caste system and where I fit in. Or didn’t,” he recalls. A John Grant album always feels like vignettes divined from a tart book of poetry. Boy From Michigan is the author’s shaggy-dog story, a novelistic approach where songs are more like chapters in a leatherbound book bought from a favorite thrift store. With Cate Le Bon in the production chair, Grant has pared back his zingers, maximizing the emotional impact of the melodies, stripping the noise of vaudeville and mood-enhancing a fruitful, spare, strangely orchestrated new world for him to live in.

Homeshake – Under The Weather LP (Sinderlyn)
Limited-edition indie store exclusive grey color vinyl pressing. Unlike most of us, Peter Sagar – also known as Homeshake – was staying at home a lot, long before the pandemic. Sagar wrote the majority of his fifth studio album, Under The Weather, in 2019, when he was going through a long, unrelenting period of sadness.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard – Butterfly 3000 LP (KGLW)
Recently released on CD – now available on limited red, yellow, and blue color vinyl. KGLW’s 18th studio album, Butterfly 3000, might be their most fearless leap into the unknown yet; 10 songs that began life as arpeggiated loops composed on modular synthesizers, before being fashioned into addictive, optimistic and seductive dream-pop. It sounds simultaneously like nothing they’ve done before, yet unmistakably Gizz, down to its climactic neon psych-a-tronic flourish.

Maco Sica / Hamid Drake / Tatsu Aoki – Ourania LP (Feeding Tube)
Fantastic studio recording, caught by Taylor Hales at Chicago’s legendary Electrical Audio, documenting the first full meeting of all the players on this album. Mako Sica, at this point in time revolve around the core duo of Przemyslaw Krys Drazek (electric trumpet, mandolin, electric guitar) and Brent Fuscaldo (vocals, electric bass, harmonica, thumb piano, gong, percussion). For this session, these two are joined once again by Chicago’s always-revelatory percussionist, Hamid Drake, with whom they have previously recorded Ronda and Balancing Tear. In addition, Ourania features the upright bass and shamisen of Tasu Aoki (Drake’s longtime partner in Fred Anderson’s trio). Also included in the roster is Thymme Jones, the leader of Chicago’s epic Cheer-Accident (among many other roles), and a dab hand at everything from balloon to grand piano. The basic idea for the album was to continue building on Mako Sica’s recorded collaborations with Drake, and to do so in as spontaneous as setting as possible.

Morris Mobley – What’s On Your Mind 7” (CQQL)
Nostalgic, suave, cosmopolitan, lustrous and precise, Morris Mobley is an alter-ego engineered to chill vibes, and simultaneously blow minds. Transport into the neo- noir, a timeless environment of dimly-lit nightclubs, smoky spaces, and hazy visions, where razor sharp vocals dance in tandem with a warm jazz-funk guitar, backed by the analog crispness of icy 808 hits and luxurious synth pads.
Modest Mouse – The Golden Casket 2xLP (Epic)
The Golden Casket heralds another new chapter in the band’s unpredictable evolution. Produced with Dave Sardy and Jacknife Lee in Los Angeles and in Modest Mouse’s studio in Portland, the album hovers in the liminal space between raw punk power and experimental studio science, frontman Isaac Brock explores themes ranging from the degradation of our psychic landscapes and invisible technology, to fatherhood. The twelve tracks behave like amorphous organisms, undergoing dramatic mutations and mood swings that speak to the chronic tug-of-war between hope and despair that plays out in Brock’s head.

Caroline Chaspoul and Eduardo Henriquez have also been very active in the field of multimedia & performance arts, and Xpujil explores that other dimension of their talent. Released on Crammed’s revered Made To Measure series (which is dedicated to experimental, minimal & ambient music), Xpujil consists of a single 40-minute track, which draws the listener into an aural, immersive experience.

A Place To Bury Strangers – Hologram LP (Dedstrange)
Recently released on CD – now available in two limited-edition color vinyl editions: neon orange and indie store exclusive red & transparent blue. Marc Ribot – Marc Ribot Plays Solo Guitar Works of Frantz Casseus [Reissue/1993] 2xLP (Knockwurst)
Long before Marc Ribot made a name for himself as a pioneering force in NYC’s downtown music scene, and as guitarist for luminaries like Tom Waits, Wilson Pickett and The Lounge Lizards, he began his guitar studies as a teenager with close family friend, the Father of Haitian classical guitar, Frantz Casséus. In 1946, Frantz came to NYC from his native Port-au-Prince, Haiti with the ambition to compose a distinctly Haitian classical guitar music, to fuse the European classical tradition with Haitian folk elements as Heitor Villa-Lobos had done with his native Brazil’s and as Béla Bartók had done with Hungarian folk songs. His three recordings, Haitian Folks Songs (1953), Haitian Dances (1954) and Haitiana (1969) were released on Folkway Recordings (and since reissued by Smithsonian Folkways) and his compositions have been covered by artists worldwide including the song Merci bon dieu by Harry Belafonte. In effort to preserve Frantz’s musical legacy, Marc edited a collection of Casseus’ solo guitar compositions, and performed those same pieces on his 1993 album Marc Ribot Plays Solo Guitar Works Of Frantz Casseus.

Their most well-remembered song, “Toothpaste And Pills”, allegedly featured smashing beer bottles against John’s mom’s basement wall as a percussion instrument.

The loose idea behind the title of the series was: this is music which has been or could have been made to measure as a soundtrack for other media (film, theatre, dance, video). MTM 1 features 15 works by Minimal Compact, Benjamin Lew, Aksak Maboul and Tuxedomoon.
Andrea Von Kampen – That Spell LP (Fantasy)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. Andrea von Kampen’s That Spell is an emotionally evocative powerhouse. It’s cinematic and sweeping – with literary references, reflections on nature, and above all the ability to transport you to a memory, a place in time, or somewhere you saw in a dream with vivid lucidity.
