The psychedelic highlights of the album, “Purgatory”, “Cerebral Crack” and “Can’t Sleep Through the Silence”, are dark and trippy, landing somewhere between the guitar-driven, lysergic mayhem of the 13th Floor Elevators and the punked-up, tongue-in-cheek insanity of The Monks. But throughout there’s a cohesiveness threaded by the elevated musicianship, earnest lyrics and attention to detail that make for a fiercely raw, yet unabashedly catchy album–dripping with all the sing along hooks that have made Mystery Lights one of the most exciting live bands on the scene. Oceans Of Slumber – Where Gods Fear To Speak CD/LP (Season Of Mist)
Recorded in Bogota, Colombia, in 2023, Where Gods Fear To Speak is a multi-faceted entry into Oceans Of Slumber’s burgeoning legacy. Many of the melodic and textural elements that made Starlight & Ash such a revelation are still present, but scabrous brutality and complex, cultured arrangements are back with a vengeance. With Cammie’s astonishing vocal blend of vulnerability and abominable power, these songs are the best possible showcase for a band on an unerring mission to win the world over.

Suki Waterhouse – Memoir Of Sparklemuffin CD/LP/Cassette (Sub Pop)
Suki Waterhouse’s music sounds like a collage of her inspirations, experiences, and emotions stitched together by honeyed vocal delivery, bright-eyed melodies, and evocative storytelling. It doubles as a mirror image of her life as a consummate creative, artist, actress, model, and mother, yet it also breaks the glass to unveil raw truth. She leans on an ever-evolving sonic palette to convey what she’s feeling—whether it be folky Americana, ‘90s alternative, turn-of-the-century indie, or handcrafted otherworldly pop. You’ll hear Suki’s longing in a swooning chorus, fearlessness in a crunchy chord, elation in a danceable waltz, and wonder in a soft coo befitting of a lullaby. [A clear vinyl pressing is available.]
Willie Watson – Willie Watson CD/LP (Thirty Tigers/Little Operation Records And More)
After 30 years of playing music professionally, Willie Watson is releasing his debut album. A founding member of Old Crow Medicine Show, and a staple on the folk and americana circuit – Willie is no stranger to the stage and to audiences. But this is his first album of original music, aptly self-titled, and a bold and confident statement in both song mastery and sonics. This record is about beating the devil. Willie didn’t make any specific pact with him, but he had been tangled up with him his whole life. This album is about finding himself free of that devil and learning to love himself again. It is about no longer leaning on old sounds and old folk singers and the music they made, and instead about learning to express himself freely and without limits.
Jack White – No Name CD/LP (Third Man)
Jack White’s back in a big, big way. Here he slides back into the raw, blown out garage rock that he’s so well known for, and man does it sound good. The riffs are piled high all over this album and he’s never sounded so urgent and utterly relevant. Everything distorts in just the right places and the hooks are guaranteed to stay in your head for a long, long time. He’s stripped everything back and come back bigger, badder and better than ever. 2024 needs this man big time.

The Nail is a fantastic new musical alliance featuring one of the most gifted vocalists of the new generation Girish Pradhan (Girish & The Chronicles, The End Machine) together with Efe and Rais Ali Eroglu, two very young kids (21 and 16 years old respectively) who – under the guidance of their father, producer Cenk Eroglu – created a new hard rock monster.
Porches – Shirt CD/LP (Domino)
Part angsty fantasy, part confessional melodrama, Shirt – the sixth studio album from Porches – is a rock album that oscillates between reality and make-believe to reflect both the innocence of suburban youth and the frayed reality of adulthood. A fusion of chaotic impulses, insatiable desires, and a perpetual yearning, Shirt plays with the tension between one’s person and persona – the weight of your dreams crashing up against your reality. The result is something both familiar and uncanny, an anthemic tribute to this intrinsic duality built on crashing and caressing sounds. Grungy guitars that shine with a menacing glint, drums and bass that punch you warmly in the stomach, interspersed with moments of eerie calmness to create a physical sense of tension and release that resonates with each track. [A pink color vinyl pressing is available.]
Nala Sinephro – Endlessness CD/LP (Warp)
Nala Sinephro’s sophomore album, titled Endlessness, expands her scope from the inward journey of Space 1.8 into widescreen orchestral ambient jazz compositions. Consisting of 10 tracks, the music was composed, produced, mixed and recorded by Nala Sinephro and includes contributions from James Mollison (Ezra Collective), Morgan Simpson (black midi), Sheila Maurice-Grey (Kokoroko), Nubya Garcia, Lyle Barton, Natcyet Wakili (Sons of Kemet) and Dwayne Kilvington (Wonky Logic).
Slowmosa – Tundra Rock CD/LP (MNRK Heavy)
Their riff-driven music, heavily inspired by the Palm Desert rock scene, showcased a sound that had been hibernating in modern rock and immediately raised eyebrows everywhere. Growing up as fans of grunge, desert rock and skate punk, the band merges the pop sides of modern rock with heavy desert rock, naming their music Tundra Rock – a reflection of the cold winter landscapes they grew up around. [A tan color vinyl pressing is available.]
Snow Patrol – The Forest Is The Path CD/2xLP (Polydor)
The Forest is the Path is an album rooted in reflection, introspection and interrogation. One of its key building blocks, says Gary Lightbody – lead singer of Snow Patrol – was the idea of love from a distance. [A marble blue color vinyl pressing, and a hardback CD version are available.]
Stryper – When We Were Kings CD/LP (Frontiers)
Legendary, long-running Christian heavy metallers Stryper return with their twelfth studio album of original material. [An indie store exclusive transparent marble orange color vinyl pressing is available.]

Timeless Fairytale is a new international melodic metal outfit, founded by Danish singer Henrik Brockmann (original frontman of Royal Hunt and Evil Masquerade) and Italian guitarist/songwriter Luca Sellitto, from the band Stamina and session guitarist for Ian Parry’s Rock Emporium, Magic Opera, In Search of and others. The mighty lineup is completed by a killer rhythm section, consisting of Stamina’s bass player Carmine Vivo and Swedish drummer Viktor Enebjörn, from the bands Forever Still and Darknd. Timeless Fairytale’s style is the result of a tasty combination of neoclassical/power metal, symphonic metal and classic rock. [A gold color vinyl pressing is available.]

[An eco mix color vinyl pressing is available.]
Trelldom – …By The Shadows… CD/LP (Prophecy)
Trelldom is the brainchild of Kristian Eivind Espedal, who is better known under his artist’s name Gaahl. The Norwegian became one of the leading figures of the Nordic black metal scene after joining the notorious Bergen outfit Gorgoroth in 1998. For many years, the vocalist was pigeonholed for his extreme vocals and attracted many, often dark rumors about him. If any notion is true about Espedal, it is to always expect the unexpected. [A deluxe CD edition and a black w/ blue color vinyl pressing are available.]
Trentemøller – Dreamweaver CD/LP/Cassette (In My Room)
Featuring ten tracks that traverse Trentemøller’s many musical strengths, Dreamweaver represents an obvious artistic leap, treading new ground while retaining the overall plot. Tracks featuring vocals come courtesy of Iceland’s Disa, who has been in Trentemøller’s fold since the Memoria tour.
TR/ST – Performance CD/LP (Dais)
The 4th full-length studio album by Robert Alfons aka TR/ST (fka Trust), Performance, sinks even further into the nasty synth-pop psychodrama that the project has pioneered and, finally, perfected across over a decade of evolution. Recorded in Los Angeles, the songs seethe with dread, lust, reckoning, and abandon, backlit by the light pollution of a thousand dead end city streets. Alfons co-produced the collection with versatile composer and producer Nightfeelings, achieving a thick, smoky balance of eerie synths, fog machine low end, and bruised, crooning voice. [Multiple vinyl colorways are available.]

This Week’s Vinyl Exclusives:
Allah-Las – Worship The Sun [Reissue/2014] LP (RHR Cat)
Orange colorway. Allah-Las’ second album, Worship The Sun, expands on the sound established by their maiden effort, honing their fusion of West Coast garage rock & roll, Latin percussion and electric folk. As richly textured and timeless as a Southern California beach break, the songs are evocative of Los Angeles’ storied past. Beatniks, artists, surfers, nomads. Remnants of a bygone Sunset Strip. Golden tans and cosmic sunsets. One can feel the warmth of the sun, but the band deftly avoids the kitsch so often indulged by lovers of these things. Hints of Byrds, Love, Felt, and those who follow are threaded into the tapestry.

Big Bend – Last Circle In A Slowdown LP (Shimmy Disc)
Clear vinyl pressing. “Big Bend’s September 2024 releases a monument to listening through the veil of time and space. Ohio native and primary songwriter, Nathan Phillips, built upon ensemble jam sessions he hosted at a residency in Australia and collaged those recordings alongside co-producer Shahzad Ismaily to make Last Circle In A Slowdown. Reflective, hi-fi, and elemental, the folk-meets-freeform sonics evoke rich ‘90s acoustic rock and the British post pop songwriting of Mark Hollis and David Sylvian. Lyrical observations of nature’s mystery and modes of regeneration consider the looming chance all things could move in any direction.” – Lyndsay Knecht

Mermaid Chunky – Slif Slaf Slaf LP (DFA)
Mermaid Chunky. It’s all in a name, sometimes. The danceable, costumed, curiosity rich duo of artists Freya Tate and Moina Moin are as imaginative as they profess. Or, to get more to the point, as we all need them to be. Freya and Moina are two visual artists and musicians from Stroud and South London, places where they importantly found communities (Stroud’s SVA and the capital’s Total Refreshment Centre) of like-minded people just as willing to chase down an idea to it’s possibly illogical conclusion. And it is in the collective and the idea of participation that Mermaid Chunky really clicks. This is a party, a collective dance, made all the better with more: people, ideas, layers, kick drums, recorders, saxophones, frogs. To wit, the album’s first track and first single, “Céilí,” named after a traditional Scottish or Irish social gathering and dance, which builds from a simple recorder line into a swelling, warm burst of major chord dance music.

Velvet Revolver – Velvet Revolver [Reissue/2004] 2xLP (Sony Legacy)

Tom Verlaine – Songs And Other Things [Reissue/2006] LP (Real Gone Music)
Teal colorway. “The true test of originality for any musician comes when you hear an instrument being played and you instantly know who’s playing it. For electric guitarists, certainly Hendrix qualifies; Page and Clapton, too. Maybe Eddie Van Halen before the legion of imitators. You probably have your own list, but to us, standing toe-to-toe (or pick-to-pick) with those legends is Television guitarist and solo artist Tom Verlaine. His self-taught, jazz-influenced style, largely devoid of effects, and vibrato tone (oh, that tone!) makes any Verlaine solo unmistakably a Verlaine solo. That he was quite an accomplished, idiosyncratic songwriter is just a bonus.”

To offer a sense of community, a place to belong & a space where they can feel safe & accepted for their differences. They all grew up “the weird kid” who was saved by music & the alternative culture, so they now feel obligated to return this favor to the younger generation.

The Ginger Root sound — handmade yet immaculately polished synth-pop, alt-disco, boogie, and soul — takes shape through Lew’s lens as an Asian-American growing up enamored by 1970s and ’80s music, specifically the creative and cultural dialogue between Japanese city pop and its Western counterparts from French pop to Philly soul to Ram-era McCartney.
