October Program Titles Released This Week:
All Them Witches – ATW CD/LP (New West)
All Them Witches are a neo-psychedelic, dark blues quartet from Nashville. They unapologetically use the music of earlier eras to forge a loose, spacy, hard rock sound of their own. While it is easy to pick out influences — including Blue Cheer, Black Sabbath, Led Zeppelin, Mountain, Gris-Gris and Sun, Moon & Herbs-era Dr. John, and the electric Delta swamp blues of Junior Kimbrough — it is much more difficult to pin them down due to a unique meld of crafted songwriting and spacious grooves. “All Them Witches have never been afraid to take risks with their music and it’s seen them build their reputation with each album they’ve released so far. Their fifth album, ATW, sees the band opt for a sixties sounding psychedelic rock sound compared to the heavier blues/stoner rock sound of the last couple albums.” – Outlaws Of The Sun [Limited colored vinyl pressing also available.]
Gouge Away – Burnt Sugar CD/LP (Deathwish Inc.)
“The Florida hardcore band Gouge Away released their debut album, Dies, two years ago, and they’ve been tearing up the DIY underground ever since. Last year, the released a very good 7” single. And this year, they’re making the big leap. The band has signed with Deathwish, Inc., the label run by Converge frontman Jacob Bannon. (If there’s a label operating today that’s worthy of your loyalty, it’s that one.) And now they release their new album, Burnt Sugar. Touché Amoré frontman Jeremy Bolm produced the new album, and Deafheaven collaborator Jack Shirley mixed and mastered it. First single and opening track ‘Only Friend’ is a pretty great summation of what this band does well. It’s an all-out assault, less than two minutes in length. And yet it finds space for nuance and dynamic shifting. The sound fuses the battering-ram fury of today’s hardcore underground with the skronky heaviness of ’90s noise-rock. It promises great things.” – Stereogum [Limited edition transparent green colored vinyl pressing also available.]
Lala Lala – The Lamb CD/LP/Cassette (Hardly Art)
“While grieving the death of a friend, recovering from a home invasion, and starting to become sober, the Chicago singer-songwriter Lillie West was also writing her sophomore album, The Lamb, with her rock band Lala Lala. Its lead single, ‘Destroyer’ plunges into West’s emotional chaos, dealing with the misleading perception that gut feelings will always lead one to an ideal resolution. “Destroyer” begins with a grumbling lo-fi guitar, its brooding emphasized with jabs from a toy piano that echo in the background. West’s voice begins low and weighed down; the lyrics evoke paranoia and confusion as they offer images of violence and black holes. From first verse, West wants to prohibit herself from making more mistakes. ‘If I’m using my hands/Can you cut them off?’ she sings. During the chorus, West’s throaty voice climbs higher and higher, keeping pace with a dizzying guitar melody like a frenzied cuckoo clock. ‘You are the reason my heart broke behind my back,’ she shouts, before a sense of calm descends and guitar reverb fades out the song. In that way, Lala Lala’s music is like watching an open wound being stitched up—jarring and healing.” — Pitchfork
Lynyrd Skynyrd– Live In Atlantic City CD/2xLP (earMUSIC)
There is no other true American rock band quite like massively influential Rock & Roll Hall of Famers Lynyrd Skynyrd. Live In Atlantic City, the band’s brand new live release captured at Decades Rock Arena, pays tribute to and celebrates the group’s legacy with the help of three diverse artists: 3 Doors Down, Hank Williams Jr. and Bo Bice. Newly mixed and mastered, each guest artist performs one of their respective hits alongside Lynyrd Skynyrd to go with classics from the band and the thrilling show peaks in performances of the Skynyrd warhorses “Call Me The Breeze” and “Sweet Home Alabama” in one big jam session from all involved. [Stand-alone DVD and Blu-ray editions are also available.]
Mudhoney – Digital Garbage CD/LP+MP3 (Sub Pop)
Since the late ‘80s, Mudhoney – the Seattle-based foursome whose muck-crusted version of rock, shot through with caustic wit and battened down by a ferocious low end – has been a high-pH tonic against the ludicrous and the insipid. Thirty years later, the world is experiencing a particularly high-water moment for both those ideals. But just in time, vocalist Mark Arm, guitarist Steve Turner, bassist Guy Maddison, and drummer Dan Peters are back with Digital Garbage, a barbed-wire-trimmed collection of sonic brickbats. Arm’s raw yawp and his bandmates’ long-honed chemistry make the album an ideal release valve for the 2018 pressure cooker. Mudhoney’s core sound – steadily pounding drums, swamp-thing bass, squalling guitar wobble, Arm’s hazardous-chemical voice – remains. The anti-religiosity shimmy “21st Century Pharisees” builds its case with Maddison’s woozy synths, which Arm says “add a really nice touch to the proceedings.” Digital Garbage closes with “Oh Yeah”, a brief celebration of skateboarding, surfing, biking, and the joy provided by these escape valves.
Once Human – Stage Of Evolution CD (earMUSIC)
Having made waves with their 2015 debut, The Life I Remember, Once Human has dramatically progressed beyond the melodic death metal sound of that release into something more complex, emotional, distinct, and devastatingly heavy. Evolution was not just the title of Once Human’s sophomore release last year it was an armor-plated declaration. Stage Of Evolution is the consequential mutation of the Evolution album from studio to stage. It was recorded during last year’s US tour and features not only songs from the studio album but also a cover of Machine Head’s “Davidian”.
Jimmy Rankin – Moving East CD/LP (True North)
Jimmy Rankin’s Moving East is pure East Coast, a homecoming album featuring true stories, tall tales and bittersweet ballads, and the classic folk-rock sound that the Canadian singer-songwriter helped pioneer. Just at a time when people are searching out authentic cultural voices, strong stories and well-crafted songs, Rankin has made an unapologetically East Coast folk-rock record, with a raw, unsentimental and current edge. It’s called Moving East because that’s exactly what Jimmy’s done. He’s moved back to Nova Scotia after seven years living and working in Nashville. Hooking up with fellow Nova Scotian Joel Plaskett as producer, he’s made an album appealing to young and old alike, with songs running the gamut from gritty pub tunes to soulful ballads all featuring great storytelling, and fine songwriting.
Rick and Morty – The Rick and Morty Soundtrack CD/2xLP+MP3 (Sub Pop)
Rick and Morty is the critically acclaimed, half-hour animated hit comedy series on Adult Swim that follows a sociopathic genius scientist who drags his timid grandson on insanely dangerous adventures across the universe. The Rick and Morty Soundtrack is the first official collection of music from the show. The album includes songs by Mazzy Star, Chaos Chaos, Blonde Redhead, and Belly, all of which have been featured in the show, as well as two new tunes from Chad VanGaalen and Clipping. [Limited colored vinyl pressing also available. Deluxe vinyl box set and cassette editions due November 23.]
Linda Thompson – My Mother Doesn’t Know I’m On The Stage CD (Omnivore)
Linda Thompson celebrates the music of the English music hall. Special guests include: Teddy Thompson, Colin Firth, Martha Wainwright, Jools Holland, Justin Vivian Bond, John Foreman, Cara Dillon, and more. Linda Thompson’s career begins in the much beloved late ‘60s, early ‘70s British folk-rock scene. At first, she was mostly a session singer and a part of a short-lived duo with Paul McNeill with whom she released two singles in 1968 and 1969. McNeill happened to be friends with Sandy Denny, and soon so was Linda. She became one of the “supergroup” of musician friends related to Fairport Convention for the 1972 The Bunch. “If there were justice in this world, there would be at least three albums full of Linda Thompson/Sandy Denny duets (under the Crazy Ladies moniker, perhaps?). But no! There are only a few examples of these two incredible singers harmonizing together. On this dusty 35-year-old audience tape you can hear a few of them — Sandy’s ‘Crazy Lady Blues’ and the Everly’s ‘When Will I Be Loved’. Both are great. The recording (including Richard Thompson on countrified lead guitar) is not hi-fi by any stretch, but every note Sandy sings and every note Richard plays cuts through the decades like a just-sharpened knife.” – Aquarium Drunkard
CDs + Vinyl:
Thomas Abban – A Sheik’s Legacy CD/LP+MP3 (Sony)
“At only 21 years old, Thomas Abban has already established himself as a singular artist in the Minnesota music community; he has an ambitious, larger than life artistic vision, a meticulous approach to executing his songs, and the restless creative impulses of someone unconcerned with where they fit in the larger musical universe. His music travels through time, stretching back to the prog and experimental rock of the 1970s. At times, it sounds like it could have been conceived by druids in ancient medieval times (‘Aladdin’, ‘Symmetry and Black Tar’), or a wild-eyed poet in Greenwich Village during the folk renaissance (‘Irene’, ‘Echo’).” – The Current
Against The Current – Past Lives CD (Fueled By Ramen)
New album from the New York pop-punk band. Features the sparkly electro-pop single “Personal”.
Alcatrazz – Live In Japan 1984 – Complete Edition CD/LP (earMUSIC)

Alt-J – Reduxer CD/LP (Atlantic)

Amber Arcades – European Heartbreak CD/LP (PIAS America)
A vast step forward from her critically acclaimed debut album Fading Lines, this selection of songs flit around Europe, from Berlin to Spain to the south of France. It’s European not just in lyrical theme but in the sly sophistication of its music. These songs carry with them the air of open-topped cars on cliff top roads, cocktails on the terrace at sunset but the lyrics undercut that sunny mood, artfully and skillfully.
Gyedu-Blay Ambolley – Simigwa [Reissue/1975] CD/LP (Mr. Bong)
Reissue of a legendary Ghanaian album that fuses highlife, afrobeat, folk and funk.

Anaal Nathrakh – A New Kind Of Horror CD (Metal Blade)
When writing about A New Kind Of Horror in the record’s liner notes, Anaal Nathrakh vocalist Dave Hunt is succinct in his description: “This is not a happy album, it is bitter, vengeful, sarcastic, sardonic, violent, terrified and horrified, terrifying and horrifying in equal measure. Above all, it is human, and all that that entails. It’s as sincere as we could make it.” Those [Vinyl edition due October 26.]

Black Honey – Black Honey CD/LP (Foxfive)
Debut album by hotly tipped UK Alternative pop-rock band. “What are they like? Put it this way: if Lana Del Rey was (in) a rock band, it would sound like Black Honey. “What,” we note your reply (we have great hearing), “you mean like Lush?” Yes, Black Honey are quite Lush-ish. You might even say they’re Lush-ous, only a bit classicist, less 4AD than Telstar. They blend, or rather create a burning pyre out of, girl-group pop and shoegazing guitar noise. They are fans equally of FX pedals and the lasting impact of a simple melody.”
The Black Lillies – Stranger To Me CD/2xLP (Attack Monkey Productions)
Known for their captivating blend of rock & roll and country, they have become one of Americana music’s biggest success stories: an internationally-renowned band of roots-rockers, armed with songs that blur the boundaries between the genres. The band’s pared down configuration has resulted in a bigger, deeper sound built on undeniable chemistry, lush three-part harmonies, and instrumental virtuosity with a funky edge.

Paul Collins is one of the most enduring cult rockers of the late-‘70s and a founding member of the legendary Nerves (with Jack Lee and Peter Case). He started his solo career in 1979 and has released more than 11 studio albums as Paul Collins or Paul Collins’ Beat. Out of My Head, his new record, is a return to the pure, unadulterated sound he helped create in his youth. Paul not only sings here, but plays all the drums and most of the guitars as well. He delivers a true rock ‘n’ roll record of the kind that are not being made in today’s world: simple melodies with classic songwriting structure, Rickenbacker guitars drenched in juicy reverb, straight up ‘60s pop harmonies, and groovy drums, all recorded to reel-to-reel tape.

Holger Czukay – Movies [Reissue/1979] CD/LP (Grönland)
Holger Czukay, Jah Wobble, Jaki Liebezeit – Full Circle [Reissue/1982] CD/LP (Grönland)
Upon examining the eventful life of Can bassist Holger Czukay, one might conclude that this intrepid musician was a loner. His turbulent career exuded an enduring eccentricity governed by a boundless free spirit. Yet Czukay, who passed away unexpectedly in 2017 at the age of 79, constantly emphasized that his creativity was always contingent upon a musical partner, whether that was a skin-and-bones counterpart or an anonymous manifestation that interacted with him through radio waves or, as happened later, the internet. Nonetheless, most of his partners were of flesh and blood. His oeuvre, which is in itself cinematic in nature, boasts a cast worthy of a Martin Scorsese film. Only the most interesting character actors were cast: Brian Eno, Phew, Rolf Dammers, David Sylvian, Annie Lennox, Jah Wobble, his Can bandmates, the list could go on and on.

Dödsrit – Spirit Crusher CD/LP (Prosthetic)
The mixing of genres is something that Dödsrit creator and sole member, Christoffer Öster has always done and done extremely well. As the main songwriter and driving force for Sweden’s crust punk, d-beat, screamo, atmospheric, sludge, etc. cult group, Totem Skin, Öster received a vast amount of critical praise through journalists and peers alike. Dödsrit doesn’t necessarily take on as many styles, maybe limiting it to black metal, crust, d-beat and post metal, though as evident on Spirit Crusher, Öster’s second album as Dödsrit, he’s found the perfect balance to meld and create a staggering opus. [Limited colored vinyl pressing also available.]
Doe – Grow Into It CD/Cassette (Topshelf/Big Scary Monsters)
New album from the London-based indie-punk band. “I wanted to write an album about getting older that was an antithesis of the overdone trope of male bands singing about rejecting adulthood and wanting to stay young and get wasted with their friends forever,” she said. “Instead, Grow Into It is about finding light and freedom in age and finding autonomy in death.” [Vinyl edition due November 2.]
Dunbarrow – Dubnarrow II CD/LP (Riding Easy)
There’s a hauntingly classic feel to Dunbarrow’s sound that gives it, in the band’s own words, “an eerie rawness.” It’s not raw in a lo-fi or distorted sense-far from it, the production is exceptionally clean and powerful. It’s the vibe to the music that has a dreamlike and ghostly quality, like a mysterious recording imprinted onto an old cassette tape. The band’s pristine, unadorned sound shares the unpretentious brilliance of classic heavy progenitors jamming in basements and barns.
Dur-Dur Band – Dur-Dur Of Somalia: Volume 1, Volume 2 & Previously Unreleased Tracks 2xCD/3xLP (Analog Africa)
From the very beginning, Dur-Dur’s doctrine was the fusion of traditional Somali music with whatever rhythms would make people dance: funk, reggae, soul, disco, and new wave were mixed effortlessly with Banaadiri beats, Dhaanto, and spiritual Saar music.

Known for their guitar virtuosity, programming, and arranging in progressive juggernaut Periphery, the duo explore another side of their sonic synergy. It comes to life via the downtempo dreamscapes of the project’s debut, The Vacancy. It stands alone at the nexus of chilled-out electronic music and sci-fi reverence.

Stefon Harris & Blackout – Sonic Creed CD (Motema Music)
“In its most basic function, the music that makes up Sonic Creed serves as a mirror to African American life in the here and now. It explores the history, legacy, struggles, and joys of the Black community, speaking to all of it at once through sound and sentiment. Sonic Creed arrives almost a decade after this groove outfit’s last showing—Urbanus (2009)—but the time away hasn’t hurt the band. If anything, Blackout has become a more limber group capable of carving out more capacious settings. With key personnel holdovers like drummer Terreon Gully and saxophonist Casey Benjamin, well-suited Blackout newcomers such as pianist James Francies and bassist Joshua Crumbly, and a handful of notable guests, there are new worlds of possibility to be found within this realm.” – All About Jazz

Experiential composer Tim Hecker’s ninth official full-length, Konoyo (“the world over here”) was largely recorded during several trips to Japan where he collaborated with members of the gagaku ensemble Tokyo Gakuso, in a temple on the outskirts of Tokyo. Inspired by conversations with a recently deceased friend about negative space and a sense of music’s increasingly banal density, Hecker found himself drawn towards restraint and elegance, while making music both collectively and alone. As with the Icelandic choir he arranged on 2016’s Love Streams, the heights of Hecker’s talent emerge in his manipulation of source material, bending and burnishing it into fantastical new forms.

This isn’t technically her third album (that’s due to arrive in 2019 or 2020), but the soundtrack stands up on its own with all the emotional peaks and troughs of a well-sequenced long player. [Limited indie-exclusive red colored vinyl pressing also available.]

The deep burnt-orange rocks and canyons became touchstones as the band formed the sonic landscapes of AAARTH. From soaring choruses to percussive pulsating guitars, The Joy Formidable paint an 11-song musical tapestry deftly balancing a sound as grounded as their ancient surroundings and as elusive and mind-bending as a gloaming desert sky. Mirrors For Psychic Warfare – I See What I Became CD/LP (Neurot Recordings)
Over the course of these eight bile-rich pieces a sonic abattoir is erected, exploited, and razed. Turbulence rises and churns giving way to rhythmic machinations, lights flicker, a grand mal / guignol seizure besets a frog- headed snitch, blood collects in a stainless-steel gutter. Claustrophobic sudor that evokes all one holds dear from Skinny Puppy, Foetus, Godflesh, bath tub tina, and wondering where to sleep, provided one can. There’s nothing fun here, nothing but the cold of an autopsy followed by the heat of a crematorium.

Then there are a few loud complaints about petty things. Then other jokes and stuff. I wrote and performed all of them. I like doing stand-up comedy very much.” — John Mulaney

Marissa Nadler – For My Crimes CD (Sacred Bones)
The eighth album from Marissa Nadler, For My Crimes, is the sound of guilt giving way to truth. The songs stare down the dark realization that love may not be enough to keep two people together through distance and differing needs. By asking these difficult questions about her relationships, Nadler has found a stronger sense of self and a sharper voice as both a songwriter and a vocalist, culminating in her most evocative entry in an already impressive discography. With the exception of a single saxophonist, every player on the album is a woman of notable pedigree and distinct style, many of whom have played with Nadler over the years. In addition to cameos by Angel Olsen and Kristin Kontrol, Sharon Van Etten sings backup on “I Can’t Listen to Gene Clark Anymore” and “Lover Release Me”. One day during the great celebration and intermingling of music and culture known as New Orleans Jazz Fest, Neville and Jacobs found themselves killing time between gigs, seated next to each other at a poker table. After a few hours of tossing cards and chatting about music, a friendship was formed with a plan to one day create some music together. The LP plays as one long narrative of Guilty’s day-to-day survival in Detroit’s concrete jungle, all set to the backdrop of Small Professor’s ominous, percussion heavy production. Featuring guest appearances from Detroit’s Boldy James, AG (of D.I.T.C.), Elucid, and Castle, with both Statik Selektah and DJ Revolution handling the Technic 1200s.

The future soul singer had a close relationship with the late icon, so his having an impact on her music is far from surprising. Composer, filmmaker and photographer Phill Niblock is a true pillar of the New York avant-garde. The second album and one of the rarest in Niblock’s vast catalogue, 1984’s Niblock For Celli / Celli Plays Niblock is a meeting of two great minds. Working with reed player Joseph Celli (a composer in his own right, who has collaborated with John Cage, Pauline Oliveros and Ornette Coleman), Niblock nimbly removes the breathing pauses from Celli’s oboe and English horn to create seamless, enchanting drones.
Judith Owen – redisCOVERed LP+MP3 (Twanky)
Recently released on CD – now available on vinyl. For most artists, an album of cover songs is an idea of last resort, a Hail Mary pass when one’s creativity has stalled out or there’s a contract to be fulfilled. But most artists aren’t Judith Owen. This firebrand singer/songwriter and pianist is currently riding the wave of a tremendous couple of years. As she has done since her earliest days attempting to plunk out the music of Mozart and Debussy on her family’s piano to her days playing four-hour sets in piano bars fulfilling customer requests, Owen makes these songs her own. She molds the familiar melodies and lyrics to contemporary pop hits and longtime favorites to her unmistakable voice and style.

Probot – Probot [Reissue/2004] LP (Southern Lord)
Circa 2004 Southern Lord’s brother in metal Dave Grohl told the label about some metal songs he had written and recorded with the dream of getting some of his favorite metal vocalists from the’ 80s to put their pipes on. The instrumentals they heard were legit bangers and Southern Lord could not wait to hear the result of what this insanely sick project would manifest itself as. Probot was that result and the eponymous album under the moniker is absolutely one of the favorite releases the label ever had the honor of being involved with. Grohl wrote, recorded and played most instruments on all tracks while heavy metal’s most upper crust like Cronos, Max Cavalera, Lemmy, Mike Dean, Kurt Brecht, Lee Dorrian, Wino, Tom G. Warrior, Snake, Eric Wagner and King Diamond burned their vocals onto these raging tracks. Soundgarden’s Kim Thayil also appears on a few cuts.
Justus Proffit & Jay Som – Nothing’s Changed LP (Polyvinyl)
“A spontaneous set of songs that incorporates elements of garage rock, country, and art-pop.” — Pitchfork
Charlie Puth – VoiceNotes LP (Atlantic)
Released last May on CD – now available on vinyl. VoiceNotes is the sophomore studio album from American pop singer-songwriter and producer Charlie Puth. “Charlie Puth’s silky falsetto made him a global star with the pop ballad ‘See You Again’, but his roots, he is quick to point out, are in jazz. Puth spent a year and a half writing and revising his second album, VoiceNotes, [which has finally been released after a delay]. Despite warnings that it was not commercially viable, he found himself repeatedly turning to jazz. But it’s not as if his fans will think he’s gone in a drastic new direction. Instead, Puth hears jazz in the warm chord progressions of the keyboards hidden under the pop texture. VoiceNotes — whose first single, ‘Attention’, is driven by a gently strummed guitar line and funky bass — harks back to the retro production of songwriters such as Babyface and Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis, who Puth sees as heirs to the jazz tradition. ‘The whole album is jazz disguised as pop music,’ Puth told a news conference in Los Angeles. ‘I’ve established a vibe where my music, it might lean adult in a way, but I still have 12-year-olds, teenagers, pre-teenagers — they are all singing the music.’” – Gulf News Music

The result is a full-bodied record that is at once sweeping and intimate-a vulnerable and powerful exploration of emotional narratives. With a band including Rosali’s close friends Charlie Hall (War On Drugs), Paul Sukeena (Angel Olsen), Mary Lattimore, Mike Polizze (Purling Hiss), Nathan Bowles (Steve Gunn, Black Twig Pickers) and Dan Provenzano (Purling Hiss, Writhing Squares), this album is a cohesive collection of lush, intimate rock songs, featuring Rosali’s warm, natural vocals and powerful riffing and rhythm guitar.

Cassettes:
Doe – Grow Into It (Topshelf/Big Scary Monsters)
New album from the London-based indie-punk band. “I wanted to write an album about getting older that was an antithesis of the overdone trope of male bands singing about rejecting adulthood and wanting to stay young and get wasted with their friends forever,” she said. “Instead, Grow Into It is about finding light and freedom in age and finding autonomy in death.”
Lala Lala – The Lamb (Hardly Art)
Roosevelt – Young Romance (City Slang)
After his celebrated self-titled 2016 debut, Roosevelt aka Marius Lauber steps outside. Toe always captivates. Mostly for their innate ability to meld elements of jazz, punk, post-rock, R&B, and a very specific blend of midwest instrumental math rock a la Ghosts and Vodka or Pele – all while channeling the raw energy of a hardcore show.
