Alexisonfire – Otherness CD/2xLP (Dine Alone)

Otherness is the first album in over a decade from the group Rolling Stone declared “put Canadian post-hardcore on the map.” Five guys playing aggressive rock grew to a hockey-arena headlining phenomenon while pushing and pulling between spirited guitar leads, melodic might, and emotional weight. The band never sacrificed the punk soul summoned in beat-up vans and basement shows. Blending their classic sound with new and forward-thinking textures, they produced Otherness themselves. The Animals – The Animals [Reissue/1964] CD/LP (Abkco)

English rhythm and blues group The Animals emerged in 1964 with their debut single “Baby, Let Me Take You Home”, but it was runaway second single, “House Of The Rising Sun” that truly catapulted them to international fame. Eric Burdon’s howling vocals and the dramatic arrangement created arguably the first folk rock hit. Both were featured on the band’s Mickie Most-produced 1964 full-length debut album.

American Aquarium – Chicamacomico CD (Losing Side)

“Chicamacomico is a record about loss. Over a six-month span at the end of 2019/beginning of 2020, I lost my grandmother, my mother and watched as the world fell into a 2+ year pandemic that decimated businesses, relationships, and dreams. This is a record about dealing with those losses. My hope is these songs serve a salve for anyone else experiencing loss. A reminder that you are not the only one that lost a friend this year, or a parent, or a loved one. There’s a special kind of hope that comes from that realization. I am not alone. We enlisted Brad Cook (Bon Iver, Nathaniel Ratliffe, Waxahatchee) to produce the record and traveled to Sonic Ranch, a world-renowned recording complex tucked in the middle of a 1,700-acre pecan orchard, in the Texas border town of Tornillo. Garcia and Saunders are joined by John Kahn, Martin Fierro (Zero, Sir Douglas Quintet) and Paul Humphrey (Marvin Gaye, Joe Cocker, Lawrence Welk) for genre-bending explorations of R&B, reggae, jazz, and rock classics including “The Harder They Come”, “You Can Leave Your Hat On”, “Freedom Jazz Dance”, and more.

Patty Griffin – Tape CD (PGM)

The 2x Grammy-winner releases a collection of rare demos and lo-fi home recordings. “Only an artist as strong as Patty Griffin would overlook these ten great performances in search of ‘better’ material. Hindsight often has its advantages and time between can bring a new perspective as did here. Yet Griffin is unlike many other artists. She doesn’t offer up explanations for the inspiration for her songs. She rarely talks about themes or threads that run through her work. Yet, like many artists, she put the pandemic time off to good use, researching older material and in the process, making some new discoveries. Some of the songs she found were initially recorded alone in her home, singing into a recorder in the wee hours of the morning. A few were from an in-studio demo session in Nashville, including a duet with Robert Plant around the time they first met. She is all about the performances.” – Glide Magazine

Drive By Truckers­ – Welcome 2 Club XIII CD/LP (ATO)

Arriving as Drive-By Truckers enter their 26^th year, Welcome 2 Club XIII marks a sharp departure from the trenchant commentary of The Unraveling and The New OK (both released in 2020). Produced by longtime DBT collaborator David Barbe and mainly recorded at his studio in Athens, GA, Welcome 2 Club XIII took shape over the course of three frenetic days in summer 2021 – a doubly extraordinary feat considering that the band had no prior intentions of making a new album. Featuring background vocals from the likes of Margo Price, R.E.M.’s Mike Mills, and Mississippi-bred singer/songwriter Schaefer Llana, Welcome 2 Club XIII was recorded live with most songs cut in one or two takes, fully harnessing Drive-By Truckers’ freewheeling energy.
