The second in Numero’s series of peeks into the world of regional studios hones in on Mickey Rouse’s Lowland operation out of Beaumont, TX. The songs themselves run the gamut; Southern boogie rock, CSNY clones, British blues thunder, garage psych hangovers, Morricone-esque supper club instrumentals, yacht rock, and what can only be described as Bobby McPherin fronting the Velvet Underground.

Ray Fresco In-Store

Ray FrescoVentura’s own Ray Fresco will be stopping by this Friday evening at 5:30pm for an exclusive in-store performance. During this leg of their tour the band is only playing record stores, so come on out and support a great California band and a local music retail institution.

In the music industry, words like “original” and “eclectic” are seemingly thrown around aimlessly when a new artist is being described. Usually, it’s a desperate and obvious attempt to make an act come across as more unique and interesting than they really are. In the case of Ventura, California’s, Rey Fresco, however, “eclectic” doesn’t even begin to describe the band’s diverse musical sound, as well as their equally varied personal backgrounds.

Though their name may sound more like a solo artist, Rey Fresco (Spanish for King Fresh), is a four piece band that over the past year has absolutely exploded in the California music scene. Comprised of soulful lead singer and Fiji native, Roger Keiaho, drummer, Andrew Jones, who builds his own drums with techniques borrowed from surfboard making, bassist, Shawn Echevarria and harpist, Xocoyotzin “Xoco” Moraza, who plays a 36 string Veracruz harp built by his father and also holds a degree in ethnomusicology, Rey Fresco is “the sonic equivalent of a global summit.”

On June 2, 20-year-old Sabina Rose O’Donnell was sexually assaulted and strangled to death behind her apartment building in Philadelphia. As the police investigated, and as the local press digested the story, one of the city’s most recognizable figures—someone who just so happens to be on network TV every night of the working week—counted himself among those captivated (and depressed) by the story of her murder. Ahmir “?uestlove” Thompson is, today, many things. He is a familiar and much-watched presence on the Internet (with 1.3 million followers on Twitter), as well as a focal point of stylebook disputes between music journalists and their copy desks (his nom de plume is pronounced “Questlove,” though he spells it with a “?”). Most importantly, he is the drummer for the long-running band the Roots, who, after 15 years of making politically engaged hip-hop with (mostly) live instruments, took the unlikely but brilliant gig in 2009 as the house band for Late Night With Jimmy Fallon on NBC. And yes, it turns out that ?uestlove was also an acquaintance of O’Donnell’s.
