Michael Pollan at Cal Poly

Every since reading Botany Of Desire, I’ve been a fan of Michael Pollan. This Thursday, October 15th, Cal Poly will host a conversation with him at 11am in the Sidney Harman Hall in Christopher Cohan Performing Arts Center. The event is free and open to the public. No tickets are required, but seating is limited.

The event will feature nationally recognized author, journalist, teacher and sustainable foods advocate Michael Pollan in a panel discussion with world renowned agricultural leaders, including Gary Smith, Monfort Endowed Chair in meat science at Colorado State University, and Myra Goodman, co-founder of Earthbound Farm Organic.

The panel will discuss current challenges and issues in California food production and lend perspective to sustainable practices across the food production industry.

Rita Hosking Trio at Steynberg Gallery

On Friday, October 16th 2009, the Rita Hosking Trio will play at the Steynberg Gallery in San Luis Obispo, CA.  Rita will be accompanied by mulit-instrumentalists Sean Feder and Bill Dakin. Kitchen tables, loggers, trailers, springs, loss, miners, culture clash, forest fires—Rita Hosking’s show is about all that and more, and always fierce and lovely. Her delivery is, to put it simply, intense. “From the first time I heard Rita sing, her voice gripped me and did not let go; a voice whose beauty speaks from a deep place of honest and raw and powerful emotion.” (Joe Craven.) Her voice, called a “soulful howl from the mountains” is calling attention around the country.  “This California girl comes by her mountain-music sensibility with true authenticity, with original songs deeply rooted in her family’s frontier experience,” (Dan Ruby, FestivalPreview.com.)

Rita’s recent accomplishments include winning the 2008 Dave Carter Memorial Songwriting Contest at the Sisters Folk Festival in Oregon, title of Finalist in the 2009 Telluride Troubadour Contest, and main stage sets at the Strawberry and Kate Wolf Music Festivals.

Appearing with Rita at the Steynberg Gallery will be multi-instrumentalists Sean Feder and Bill Dakin. Sean plays banjo, dobro, and bass, and Bill Dakin plays upright bass and guitar. “Close harmonies and strong backup provided by [Rita’s] band round out a sound rooted firmly in traditional music but distinct to an artist with a particular lyrical love for the mountains and the lives they envelop.” (Adrienne van der Valk for the Eugene Weekly.)

The Friday, October 16th show will be at the Steynberg Gallery at 1531 Monterey Street in San Luis Obispo, CA.  Admission is $10, at the door.  The show starts at 7:30pm.

Contest: 2nd Annual Pozo Greenfest

After this amazing rain soaking we’ve had, the 2nd Annual Pozo Greenfest may, quite literally, be vividly green. Plus, the line-up is astounding! The soul-jazz groove of Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe, the classic punk-ska fusion mayhem of Fishbone, the eclectic mountain reggae-grass-funk of Blue Turtle Seduction and the local strongmen Still Time. The all-ages, all-day festival starts at noon on October 18th at the Pozo Saloon and will feature a day of sustainable vendors and exhibitors as well as organic cuisine.

The event will use electricity provided by Mobile Green Power, a solar energy firm based in Grass Valley. Atascadero biodiesel company TGP West will power the main stage replacing the four diesel generators that Pozo Saloon usually uses. Zero Hero Events of Boulder, Colo., will handle waste– often the least green part of any festival. The company composts food scraps, encourages vendors to use eco-friendly disposable dishware and recycles bottles, cans, cardboard and batteries.
