Aesop Rock – Integrated Tech Solutions CD/LP (Rhymesayers)
On Integrated Tech Solutions—a concept album about an organization offering “lifestyle – and industry-specific applications designed to curate a desired multi-experience”—Aesop Rock wields insidious corporate-speak as a tool to pry the parasitic business culture away from the parts of life that truly matter, while picking apart the charlatan language. On “Mindful Solutionism”, as the wheel evolves seamlessly into modern agriculture—and then into atomic bombs, cigarettes, and surveillance cameras, Aes sums the spiral up in just a few words: “We cannot be trusted with the stuff that we come up with.” The album sounds like the past and future at once. [A limited-edition white color vinyl pressing is available.]

Now it’s time to stand back and admire the final, completed creation. And what a creation – 12 tracks of grace, gravity and great beauty that provide welcome confirmation of not only Peter’s ongoing ability to write stop-you-in-your-tracks songs but also of that thrilling voice, still perfectly, delightfully intact. Throughout the album the intelligent and thoughtful – often thought-provoking – songs tackle life and the universe. i/o is available in four editions: 2xCD (Bright Side Mix, Dark-Side Mix); 2xLP (Dark Die Mix); 2xLP (Bright Side Mix); and 2xCD+Blu-ray Audio (Bright-Side Mix, Dark-Side Mix, In-Side Mix). The album features guest appearances by Taylor Swift, Phoebe Bridgers and Sufjan Stevens. First Two Pages Of Frankenstein channels the group’s revitalized chemistry into a body of work that beautifully balances elegant musicality with The National’s more idiosyncratic impulses. Tracks such as “Grease In Your Hair” and “Ice Machines” were road-tested in 2022 before they were recorded, allowing the band to hone the material in real time (another song, “Weird Goodbyes” featuring Bon Iver’s Justin Vernon, was released as a standalone track in August 2022). “To me the power of this record has to do with the intentionality and structure of the music meeting with a lot of accidental magic,” says Aaron Dessner. Zach Russell – Where The Flowers Meet The Dew CD/LP (Carlboro)
Once again joining forces with up-and-coming producer Kyle Crownover (Adeem The Artist), Where The Flowers Meet The Dew never takes its foot off the gas pedal. It’s deep, mellow, and the lyrics are contemplative. It draws you in while not letting the listener get too comfortable. Wednesday – Rat Saw God CD/LP/Cassette (Dead Oceans)
Rat Saw God is an album about riding a bike down a suburban stretch in Greensboro while listening to My Bloody Valentine for the first time on an iPod Nano, past a creek that runs through the neighborhood riddled with broken glass bottles and condoms, a front yard filled with broken and rusted car parts, a lonely and dilapidated house reclaimed by kudzu. Four Lokos and rodeo clowns and a kid who burns down a corn field. Roadside monuments, church marquees, poppers and vodka in a plastic water bottle, the shit you get away with at Jewish summer camp, strange sentimental family heirlooms at the thrift stores. The way the South hums alive all night in the summers and into fall, the sound of high school football games, the halo effect from the lights polluting the darkness. It’s not really bright enough to see in front of you, but in that stretch of inky void – somehow – you see everything. [A limited-edition purple vinyl colorway is available.]

These ten songs and two mood-matching instrumentals framed by a mesh of acoustic/electric guitars, soft shades of keyboards and Smith’s gorgeous voice are the quintessence of what drew people to his work with Midlake in the first place. Britpop or glam rock, a bit folk intentionally, sometimes punk in energy: for After Geography, it doesn’t matter the genre, as long as there is music. Annie Anxiety – Barbed Wire Halo [Reissue/1981] LP (One Little Independent)
Ann Robie Bandes, better known as Little Annie, or in this instance, Annie Anxiety, is what one could call a punk rock renaissance woman, cited as a singer, painter, poet, writer, recording artist, pastor, and stage actor, while her ties to Steve Ignorant and Penny Rimbaud of Crass would aid her in becoming an underground Patti Smith of the crust generation. Upon moving to London at the behest of her newfound contemporaries and performing poetry readings at Crass shows across the UK, in 1981 she would release her much adored Barbed Wire Halo 7″ on Crass Records with the help of Rimbaud. This new expanded LP edition restores the original EP along with bonus content collected from differing compilations contributed to by Annie in aid of differing causes, such as “Gates Of Freedom” which originally featured on the 1985 Here We Go compilation to benefit the UK Miners’ strike, and “Soweto Suntan” which came from the Devastate To Liberate LP released by David Tibet’s Yangki imprint and also featured Nurse With Wound, Coil, Current 93 and The Legendary Pink Dots.

Tangana), Variety’s Future Icon award, and most recently his first RIAA-certified platinum record for viral hit “Evergreen (You Didn’t Deserve Me at All)”—which was also his Billboard Hot 100 debut. Born in Hobart, Indiana, to parents who emigrated from Mexico, he often felt isolated as a minority in his hometown.

Bad Brains – Bad Brains [Reissue/1982] LP (Org Music)
Special ‘banana peel’ colorway. Bad Brains is the self-titled debut studio album recorded by American hardcore punk/reggae band Bad Brains. Though Bad Brains had recorded the 16 song Black Dots album in 1979 and the 5-song Omega Sessions EP in 1980, the ROIR cassette was the band’s first release of anything longer than a single.

Khanate – Things Viral [Reissue/2003] LP (Sacred Bones)
Khanate’s self-titled debut (2001) has all the pleasant ambiance of a plane crash site, a bleak urban waste of mangled and torn metal beams and hissed alarms. When Khanate first issued Instructions To The Void in 2001, the band was embraced as the next iteration of guitarist Stephen O’Malley’s tube-cracking forays into amplifier variance; a fascinating further step of vocalist Alan Dubin and low-frequency shifter James Plotkin’s space charts; and a warning for the crawling-pace hammers of Tim Wyskida’s drums. Sensing that defenses to their contagion were down, Things Viral (2003) withdrew from any familiar or friendly shapes. On their second offering, the band decelerated to its own tempo, freezing the decay of the debut in a shocking and powerful stasis. [Limited-edition white colorways are available.]

Minor Threat – Out Of Step Outtakes 7” (Dischord)
In January 1983, Minor Threat went into Inner Ear Studio for the first time as a five-piece (Brian Baker had moved from bass to second guitar and Steve Hansgen was now playing bass). They had six new songs that would end up being the center piece of what became the Out Of Step 12″ EP. The band had also decided to re-record the song “Out Of Step” with some extra language to try to clarify the lyrics, as well as “Cashing In”, a tongue-in-cheek song about the DC punk scene which they had only played live once. After much debate, “Cashing In” was added as a hidden track on the original vinyl release though not listed on the cover or label. There was still blank tape on the reel, so they decided to record an instrumental with the working title, “Addams Family” and then recorded new versions of “In My Eyes” and “Filler” to hear what they sounded like with two guitars. “Addams Family” ended up being used as a coda to “Cashing In”, but the other two songs were never mixed and largely forgotten for over 35 years until the multitrack tapes were taken into the studio to be digitized in 2021. Surprised by the discovery, Ian and Don Zientara mixed the two songs along with the complete take of “Addams Family”. These outtakes are now being released on a 7″ to mark the 40th anniversary of the release of Out Of Step. Clear vinyl.
